Sekinini;Coastal communities in Pacific Island Countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts including sea-level rise, coastal erosion, tidal inundation, and the intensification of storm surge activity. In response, adaptation projects across the region have attempted to reduce exposure and overall vulnerability to these coastal pressures. This paper explores what happens once these projects reach communities: are effective and sustainable outcomes achieved, or can the implementation of adaptation projects lead to unintended negative outcomes and result in maladaptation? This paper investigates this issue in relation to two seawall projects implemented in communities on Vanua Levu Island, Fiji. We found that the seawalls have not been successful in achieving their primary aim of safeguarding communities against coastal pressures and have instead resulted in unanticipated negative outcomes for land and livelihood security. Of primary concern is the way that seawalls trap water along their landward sides—acting more like a dam—because of the ineffective design and construction of the seawalls and associated infrastructure. This paper concludes with a call to think more long-term about site-specific adaptation measures that actively involve and are driven by local perspectives in the planning, implementation, and maintenance process.

Historically coral reefs of Bahrain were among the most extensive in the southern basin of the Arabian Gulf. However, Bahrain's reefs have undergone significant decline in the last four decades as a result of large-scale coastal development and elevated sea surface temperature events. Here we quantitatively surveyed six sites including most major coral reef habitats around Bahrain and a reef located 72 km offshore. Fleshy and turf algae now dominate Bahrain's reefs (mean: 72% cover), and live coral cover is low (mean: 5.1%). Formerly dominant Acropora were not observed at any site. The offshore Bulthama reef had the highest coral cover (16.3%) and species richness (22 of the 23 species observed, 13 of which were exclusive to this site). All reefs for which recent and historical data are available show continued degradation, and it is unlikely that they will recover under continuing coastal development and projected climate change impacts.

The phytoplankton community in the Changjiang Estuary is subject to intensive physical and chemical stresses because of human- and climate-driven changes. We obtained historical data on summer phytoplankton communities from 1959 to 2009 to explore responses to long-term environmental changes. The nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and ratios (N/P and N/Si) increased because of persistent riverine loading, but silicon (Si) levels remained constant. Climatic changes and extensive water diversions and withdrawals (sediment retention) resulted in a series of physical alterations, including increased temperature, turbidity reduction, and river plume shrinkage. These changes induced a dramatic increase in microalgal biomass (cell density and chlorophyll a) with a decreasing diatom-dinoflagellate ratio, and exacerbated harmful algal blooms. In the past dominant net-collected species were usually chain-forming diatoms; however, more recently, large dinoflagellates and filamentous cyanobacteria dominate. This was not consistent with information from water samples (co-dominated by small dinoflagellates), because of the loss of solitary species collected using a 76-μm net. The dominant species shifted from temperate-subtropical/eurythermal to subtropical-tropical/eurythermal taxa in the warmer water caused by global warming and hydrographic changes. There was also an increased dominance of euryhaline/high-salinity species due to increase in Kuroshio transport and the northward Taiwan Warm Current and reduction in Changjiang Diluted Water. All these changes in phytoplankton communities appear to be closely related to an increase in anthropogenic activities and climatic changes.

North Italian districts such as Vercelli, Pavia, Novara, and Milano are known as some of the world's most advanced rice cultivation sites. In 2013 Italian rice cultivation represented about 50% of all European rice production by area, and paddy fields extended for over 216,000 ha. Cultivation of rice involves different agricultural activities which have environmental impacts mainly due to fossil fuels and agrochemical requirements as well as the methane emission associated with the fermentation of organic material in the flooded rice fields. In order to assess the environmental consequences of rice production in the District of Vercelli, the cultivation practices most frequently carried out were inventoried and evaluated. The general approach of this study was not only to gather the inventory data for rice production and quantify their environmental impacts, but also to identify the key environmental factors where special attention must be paid. Life Cycle Assessment methodology was applied in this study from a cradle-to-farm gate perspective. The environmental profile was analyzed in terms of seven different impact categories: climate change, ozone depletion, human toxicity, terrestrial acidification, freshwater eutrophication, marine eutrophication, and fossil depletion. Regarding straw management, two different scenarios (burial into the soil of the straw versus harvesting) were compared. The analysis showed that the environmental impact was mainly due to field emissions, the fuel consumption needed for the mechanization of field operations, and the drying of the paddy rice. The comparison between the two scenarios highlighted that the collection of the straw improves the environmental performance of rice production except that for freshwater eutrophication. To improve the environmental performance of rice production, solutions to save fossil fuel and reduce the emissions from fertilizers (leaching, volatilization) as well as methane emissions should be implemented.

The in-situ seawater temperature in the fjord was measured at different depths and locations from April 2015 to April 2016. Also, a 2-dimensional numerical simulation of key oceanographic parameters throughout the fjord was carried out. Measurements as well as simulations show that the seawater temperature in the fjord is generally higher than 1 °C with an upper limit of 10 °C. The simulations indicate that the area of interest is tidally dominated with higher current velocity which prominently flanks alongshore during ebb. Our findings indicate, based on oceanographic conditions of the area of study, that heat extraction from Onundarfjordur is theoretically feasible. The average seawater speed of 0.03 m/s in the fjord can gives heat power amounting to 120 kW/(m2K) when assuming natural convection through an in-situ heat exchanger. The results imply the possibility of large-scale harnessing of seawater in coastal Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, including e.g. Greenland, using heat pumps that can provide up to 80 °C hot water for space heating.

The signature of ocean warming in global fisheries catch data has been identified through a variety of methods, one of which is the mean temperature of the catch (MTC) index. The MTC is derived from the average temperature preference of fished species weighted by their contribution to annual catches. Here, we used MTC to explore the fisheries catch responses to warming, from 1950 to 2016, along a latitudinal gradient in the western Pacific Ocean, from 37° N, via 2.5° S in the central western Pacific, to 36° S. The tropicalization of catches in a given geographic space, i.e., the increased catch of species with affinity to warmer waters, as a result of increasing sea temperature and the associated poleward migration of species, rather than any large-scale oceanographic variability, was apparent through the increasing MTC at higher latitudes. In particular, MTC in temperate Japan increased by 0.33 °C per decade over the time series. The MTC in subtropical/temperate southeast Australia increased by 0.24 °C per decade over the full time period and by 1.24 °C per decade after 2002. The observed MTC increase was caused by the increasing dominance of thermophilous (preferring warmer waters) over psychrophilous (preferring cooler waters) taxa in the catches in these waters. On the other hand, the MTC in tropical Indonesian waters, as well as the ratio of thermophilous to psychrophilous taxa, showed a gentle yet consistent decrease of 0.05 °C per decade over the full time period. This finding supports the tropicalization hypothesis, given the limited scope for further tropicalization of catches in the already tropical ecosystem of Indonesia. Ocean warming has indeed been altering the distribution of marine organisms, particularly in temperate ecosystems as thermophilous taxa become more abundant, while psychrophilous taxa abundance decreases. Tropicalization impacts fisheries and catch composition and is, therefore, expected to cause conflicts among fishers and challenge fisheries management.

Aim: To test the hypothesis that communities with higher diversity have more predictable properties by examining patterns of community structure along a species richness gradient. Location: Trinidad and Tobago (11°00 N, 61°00 W), on the South American continental shelf, opposite the Orinoco River delta, north-east Venezuela. Methods: We used quantile regressions to investigate how three total abundance, absolute and relative dominance measures – numerical abundance, biomass and energy use, respectively – change across a species richness gradient. We investigated which allocation rule best mimics community assembly in this species richness gradient by examining the abundance of the dominant species and comparing it with predictions of niche apportionment models. Results: All measures of total abundance increase on average across the gradient, but the upper limit remains constant. On average, absolute dominance is constant, but the distance between the upper and lower limits decreases along the gradient. Relative dominance decreases with species richness. Observed dominance patterns are best described by Tokeshi's random fraction model. Main conclusions: Our results show that both total abundance and absolute dominance become increasingly variable as biodiversity decreases. Consequently, our study suggests that ecosystem properties are less predictable when biodiversity is lower.

This review provides a synthesis of limnological data and conclusions from studies on ponds and small lakes at our research sites in Subarctic and Arctic Canada, Alaska, northern Scandinavia, and Greenland. Many of these water bodies contain large standing stocks of benthic microbial mats that grow in relatively nutrient-rich conditions, while the overlying water column is nutrient-poor and supports only low concentrations of phytoplankton. Zooplankton biomass can, however, be substantial and is supported by grazing on the microbial mats as well as detrital inputs, algae, and other plankton. In addition to large annual temperature fluctuations, a short growing season, and freeze-up and desiccation stress in winter, these ecosystems are strongly regulated by the supply of organic matter and its optical and biogeochemical properties. Dissolved organic carbon affects bacterial diversity and production, the ratio between pelagic and benthic primary productivity via light attenuation, and the exposure and photoprotection responses of organisms to solar ultraviolet radiation. Climate warming is likely to result in reduced duration of ice-cover, warmer water temperatures, and increased nutrient supplies from the more biogeochemically active catchments, which in turn may cause greater planktonic production. Predicted changes in the amount and origin of dissolved organic matter may favour increased microbial activity in the water column and decreased light availability for the phytobenthos, with effects on biodiversity at all trophic levels, and increased channelling of terrestrial carbon to the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases.

This review provides a synthesis of limnological data and conclusions from studies on ponds and small lakes at our research sites in Subarctic and Arctic Canada, Alaska, northern Scandinavia, and Greenland. Many of these water bodies contain large standing stocks of benthic microbial mats that grow in relatively nutrient-rich conditions, while the overlying water column is nutrient-poor and supports only low concentrations of phytoplankton. Zooplankton biomass can, however, be substantial and is supported by grazing on the microbial mats as well as detrital inputs, algae, and other plankton. In addition to large annual temperature fluctuations, a short growing season, and freeze-up and desiccation stress in winter, these ecosystems are strongly regulated by the supply of organic matter and its optical and biogeochemical properties. Dissolved organic carbon affects bacterial diversity and production, the ratio between pelagic and benthic primary productivity via light attenuation, and the exposure and photoprotection responses of organisms to solar ultraviolet radiation. Climate warming is likely to result in reduced duration of ice-cover, warmer water temperatures, and increased nutrient supplies from the more biogeochemically active catchments, which in turn may cause greater planktonic production. Predicted changes in the amount and origin of dissolved organic matter may favour increased microbial activity in the water column and decreased light availability for the phytobenthos, with effects on biodiversity at all trophic levels, and increased channelling of terrestrial carbon to the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases.

Aside from the technological considerations, important questions arise regarding the optimal disposal depths and locations necessary for the long-term sequestration of CO 2 . These questions form the basis for a series of model simulations of the disposal of CO 2 in the deep sea. An Ocean Carbon Cycle Model (OCCM) was used to simulate the discharge of CO 2 at five sites representing different oceanagraphic environments. The sites were the Northwest Atlantic, Northeast Atlantic, Northwest Pacific, North Pacific Gyre, and the Western Equatorial Pacific. Model simulations indicate that the location and depth of injection can significantly improve long-term storage of CO 2 . Of the sites considered, a deep discharge (>1000m) in the Western Equatorial Pacific showed the greatest effacy of CO 2 sequestration.

A temperature-control curtain (TCC) is a new technique of selective withdrawal for controlling the outflow temperature of a reservoir. A TCC can significantly affect the reservoir hydrodynamic and thermal structure, but its effects on water quality and ecology remain unknown. In this study, we developed and calibrated a hydro-thermal-water quality model to numerically analyze how a TCC located 1 km from a dam affected algal biomass and water quality in a reservoir. According to our results, when a TCC was used, the mean annual chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentrations in the reservoir decreased. Chl-a concentrations remained constant during the heating period until normal water levels were reached, and increased during the cooling period and decreased until year-end drawdown levels were reached. The dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations decreased and the anoxic proportions increased throughout the year. The yearly mean Chl-a and DO concentrations in the reservoir declined continuously as the water-retaining proportion (Pr) of the TCC increased from 0 to 87.5%, while the anoxic proportion (DO < 2 mg/L) first increased and then decreased, peaking at a Pr of 62.5%. The change patterns of the anoxic proportion were consistent with those of thermal stability, demonstrating the applicability of thermal stability in predicting reservoir hypoxia. Moreover, the environmental impact of TCCs will increase under global warming, and TCCs can mitigate the increased algal biomass and further decrease DO in warmer climate conditions. Under a medium-high climate scenario, Representative Concentration Pathway 6.0, and a TCC having 75% Pr, the yearly mean Chl-a, DO concentrations, and anoxic proportions of Sanbanxi Reservoir are predicted to reach 10.7 μg/L, 4.2 mg/L, and 39.6%, respectively, by 2046-2065. Thus, changes in the water environment and ecology (particularly the likely deterioration of water quality because of selective withdrawal under global warming) should be considered as a component of water management practices.

Sekinini;Coastal communities in Pacific Island Countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts including sea-level rise, coastal erosion, tidal inundation, and the intensification of storm surge activity. In response, adaptation projects across the region have attempted to reduce exposure and overall vulnerability to these coastal pressures. This paper explores what happens once these projects reach communities: are effective and sustainable outcomes achieved, or can the implementation of adaptation projects lead to unintended negative outcomes and result in maladaptation? This paper investigates this issue in relation to two seawall projects implemented in communities on Vanua Levu Island, Fiji. We found that the seawalls have not been successful in achieving their primary aim of safeguarding communities against coastal pressures and have instead resulted in unanticipated negative outcomes for land and livelihood security. Of primary concern is the way that seawalls trap water along their landward sides—acting more like a dam—because of the ineffective design and construction of the seawalls and associated infrastructure. This paper concludes with a call to think more long-term about site-specific adaptation measures that actively involve and are driven by local perspectives in the planning, implementation, and maintenance process.

Historically coral reefs of Bahrain were among the most extensive in the southern basin of the Arabian Gulf. However, Bahrain's reefs have undergone significant decline in the last four decades as a result of large-scale coastal development and elevated sea surface temperature events. Here we quantitatively surveyed six sites including most major coral reef habitats around Bahrain and a reef located 72 km offshore. Fleshy and turf algae now dominate Bahrain's reefs (mean: 72% cover), and live coral cover is low (mean: 5.1%). Formerly dominant Acropora were not observed at any site. The offshore Bulthama reef had the highest coral cover (16.3%) and species richness (22 of the 23 species observed, 13 of which were exclusive to this site). All reefs for which recent and historical data are available show continued degradation, and it is unlikely that they will recover under continuing coastal development and projected climate change impacts.

The phytoplankton community in the Changjiang Estuary is subject to intensive physical and chemical stresses because of human- and climate-driven changes. We obtained historical data on summer phytoplankton communities from 1959 to 2009 to explore responses to long-term environmental changes. The nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and ratios (N/P and N/Si) increased because of persistent riverine loading, but silicon (Si) levels remained constant. Climatic changes and extensive water diversions and withdrawals (sediment retention) resulted in a series of physical alterations, including increased temperature, turbidity reduction, and river plume shrinkage. These changes induced a dramatic increase in microalgal biomass (cell density and chlorophyll a) with a decreasing diatom-dinoflagellate ratio, and exacerbated harmful algal blooms. In the past dominant net-collected species were usually chain-forming diatoms; however, more recently, large dinoflagellates and filamentous cyanobacteria dominate. This was not consistent with information from water samples (co-dominated by small dinoflagellates), because of the loss of solitary species collected using a 76-μm net. The dominant species shifted from temperate-subtropical/eurythermal to subtropical-tropical/eurythermal taxa in the warmer water caused by global warming and hydrographic changes. There was also an increased dominance of euryhaline/high-salinity species due to increase in Kuroshio transport and the northward Taiwan Warm Current and reduction in Changjiang Diluted Water. All these changes in phytoplankton communities appear to be closely related to an increase in anthropogenic activities and climatic changes.

North Italian districts such as Vercelli, Pavia, Novara, and Milano are known as some of the world's most advanced rice cultivation sites. In 2013 Italian rice cultivation represented about 50% of all European rice production by area, and paddy fields extended for over 216,000 ha. Cultivation of rice involves different agricultural activities which have environmental impacts mainly due to fossil fuels and agrochemical requirements as well as the methane emission associated with the fermentation of organic material in the flooded rice fields. In order to assess the environmental consequences of rice production in the District of Vercelli, the cultivation practices most frequently carried out were inventoried and evaluated. The general approach of this study was not only to gather the inventory data for rice production and quantify their environmental impacts, but also to identify the key environmental factors where special attention must be paid. Life Cycle Assessment methodology was applied in this study from a cradle-to-farm gate perspective. The environmental profile was analyzed in terms of seven different impact categories: climate change, ozone depletion, human toxicity, terrestrial acidification, freshwater eutrophication, marine eutrophication, and fossil depletion. Regarding straw management, two different scenarios (burial into the soil of the straw versus harvesting) were compared. The analysis showed that the environmental impact was mainly due to field emissions, the fuel consumption needed for the mechanization of field operations, and the drying of the paddy rice. The comparison between the two scenarios highlighted that the collection of the straw improves the environmental performance of rice production except that for freshwater eutrophication. To improve the environmental performance of rice production, solutions to save fossil fuel and reduce the emissions from fertilizers (leaching, volatilization) as well as methane emissions should be implemented.

The in-situ seawater temperature in the fjord was measured at different depths and locations from April 2015 to April 2016. Also, a 2-dimensional numerical simulation of key oceanographic parameters throughout the fjord was carried out. Measurements as well as simulations show that the seawater temperature in the fjord is generally higher than 1 °C with an upper limit of 10 °C. The simulations indicate that the area of interest is tidally dominated with higher current velocity which prominently flanks alongshore during ebb. Our findings indicate, based on oceanographic conditions of the area of study, that heat extraction from Onundarfjordur is theoretically feasible. The average seawater speed of 0.03 m/s in the fjord can gives heat power amounting to 120 kW/(m2K) when assuming natural convection through an in-situ heat exchanger. The results imply the possibility of large-scale harnessing of seawater in coastal Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, including e.g. Greenland, using heat pumps that can provide up to 80 °C hot water for space heating.

The MTC is derived from the average temperature preference of fished species weighted by their contribution to annual catches. Here, we used MTC to explore the fisheries catch responses to warming, from 1950 to 2016, along a latitudinal gradient in the western Pacific Ocean, from 37° N, via 2.5° S in the central western Pacific, to 36° S. The tropicalization of catches in a given geographic space, i.e., the increased catch of species with affinity to warmer waters, as a result of increasing sea temperature and the associated poleward migration of species, rather than any large-scale oceanographic variability, was apparent through the increasing MTC at higher latitudes. In particular, MTC in temperate Japan increased by 0.33 °C per decade over the time series. The MTC in subtropical/temperate southeast Australia increased by 0.24 °C per decade over the full time period and by 1.24 °C per decade after 2002. The observed MTC increase was caused by the increasing dominance of thermophilous (preferring warmer waters) over psychrophilous (preferring cooler waters) taxa in the catches in these waters. On the other hand, the MTC in tropical Indonesian waters, as well as the ratio of thermophilous to psychrophilous taxa, showed a gentle yet consistent decrease of 0.05 °C per decade over the full time period. This finding supports the tropicalization hypothesis, given the limited scope for further tropicalization of catches in the already tropical ecosystem of Indonesia. Ocean warming has indeed been altering the distribution of marine organisms, particularly in temperate ecosystems as thermophilous taxa become more abundant, while psychrophilous taxa abundance decreases. Tropicalization impacts fisheries and catch composition and is, therefore, expected to cause conflicts among fishers and challenge fisheries management.

Aim: To test the hypothesis that communities with higher diversity have more predictable properties by examining patterns of community structure along a species richness gradient. Location: Trinidad and Tobago (11°00 N, 61°00 W), on the South American continental shelf, opposite the Orinoco River delta, north-east Venezuela. Methods: We used quantile regressions to investigate how three total abundance, absolute and relative dominance measures – numerical abundance, biomass and energy use, respectively – change across a species richness gradient. We investigated which allocation rule best mimics community assembly in this species richness gradient by examining the abundance of the dominant species and comparing it with predictions of niche apportionment models. Results: All measures of total abundance increase on average across the gradient, but the upper limit remains constant. On average, absolute dominance is constant, but the distance between the upper and lower limits decreases along the gradient. Relative dominance decreases with species richness. Observed dominance patterns are best described by Tokeshi's random fraction model. Main conclusions: Our results show that both total abundance and absolute dominance become increasingly variable as biodiversity decreases. Consequently, our study suggests that ecosystem properties are less predictable when biodiversity is lower.

This review provides a synthesis of limnological data and conclusions from studies on ponds and small lakes at our research sites in Subarctic and Arctic Canada, Alaska, northern Scandinavia, and Greenland. Many of these water bodies contain large standing stocks of benthic microbial mats that grow in relatively nutrient-rich conditions, while the overlying water column is nutrient-poor and supports only low concentrations of phytoplankton. Zooplankton biomass can, however, be substantial and is supported by grazing on the microbial mats as well as detrital inputs, algae, and other plankton. In addition to large annual temperature fluctuations, a short growing season, and freeze-up and desiccation stress in winter, these ecosystems are strongly regulated by the supply of organic matter and its optical and biogeochemical properties. Dissolved organic carbon affects bacterial diversity and production, the ratio between pelagic and benthic primary productivity via light attenuation, and the exposure and photoprotection responses of organisms to solar ultraviolet radiation. Climate warming is likely to result in reduced duration of ice-cover, warmer water temperatures, and increased nutrient supplies from the more biogeochemically active catchments, which in turn may cause greater planktonic production. Predicted changes in the amount and origin of dissolved organic matter may favour increased microbial activity in the water column and decreased light availability for the phytobenthos, with effects on biodiversity at all trophic levels, and increased channelling of terrestrial carbon to the atmosphere in the form of greenhouse gases.

Stegen; Robert Bacastow; Kathleen H. Cole;Abstract Theoretically, disposing of CO 2 directly into the deep ocean could significantly reduce short-term increases in atmospheric CO 2 concentration. Aside from the technological considerations, important questions arise regarding the optimal disposal depths and locations necessary for the long-term sequestration of CO 2 . These questions form the basis for a series of model simulations of the disposal of CO 2 in the deep sea. An Ocean Carbon Cycle Model (OCCM) was used to simulate the discharge of CO 2 at five sites representing different oceanagraphic environments. The sites were the Northwest Atlantic, Northeast Atlantic, Northwest Pacific, North Pacific Gyre, and the Western Equatorial Pacific. Model simulations indicate that the location and depth of injection can significantly improve long-term storage of CO 2 . Of the sites considered, a deep discharge (>1000m) in the Western Equatorial Pacific showed the greatest effacy of CO 2 sequestration.

Stegen; Robert Bacastow; Kathleen H. Cole;Abstract Theoretically, disposing of CO 2 directly into the deep ocean could significantly reduce short-term increases in atmospheric CO 2 concentration. Aside from the technological considerations, important questions arise regarding the optimal disposal depths and locations necessary for the long-term sequestration of CO 2 . These questions form the basis for a series of model simulations of the disposal of CO 2 in the deep sea. An Ocean Carbon Cycle Model (OCCM) was used to simulate the discharge of CO 2 at five sites representing different oceanagraphic environments. The sites were the Northwest Atlantic, Northeast Atlantic, Northwest Pacific, North Pacific Gyre, and the Western Equatorial Pacific. Model simulations indicate that the location and depth of injection can significantly improve long-term storage of CO 2 . Of the sites considered, a deep discharge (>1000m) in the Western Equatorial Pacific showed the greatest effacy of CO 2 sequestration.

A temperature-control curtain (TCC) is a new technique of selective withdrawal for controlling the outflow temperature of a reservoir. A TCC can significantly affect the reservoir hydrodynamic and thermal structure, but its effects on water quality and ecology remain unknown. In this study, we developed and calibrated a hydro-thermal-water quality model to numerically analyze how a TCC located 1 km from a dam affected algal biomass and water quality in a reservoir. According to our results, when a TCC was used, the mean annual chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentrations in the reservoir decreased. Chl-a concentrations remained constant during the heating period until normal water levels were reached, and increased during the cooling period and decreased until year-end drawdown levels were reached. The dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations decreased and the anoxic proportions increased throughout the year. The yearly mean Chl-a and DO concentrations in the reservoir declined continuously as the water-retaining proportion (Pr) of the TCC increased from 0 to 87.5%, while the anoxic proportion (DO < 2 mg/L) first increased and then decreased, peaking at a Pr of 62.5%. The change patterns of the anoxic proportion were consistent with those of thermal stability, demonstrating the applicability of thermal stability in predicting reservoir hypoxia. Moreover, the environmental impact of TCCs will increase under global warming, and TCCs can mitigate the increased algal biomass and further decrease DO in warmer climate conditions. Under a medium-high climate scenario, Representative Concentration Pathway 6.0, and a TCC having 75% Pr, the yearly mean Chl-a, DO concentrations, and anoxic proportions of Sanbanxi Reservoir are predicted to reach 10.7 μg/L, 4.2 mg/L, and 39.6%, respectively, by 2046-2065. Thus, changes in the water environment and ecology (particularly the likely deterioration of water quality because of selective withdrawal under global warming) should be considered as a component of water management practices.
