The strong loop ocean currents and induced eddies can pose significant problems for deep-water well. Broadly divided ocean currents, surface currents, bottom currents and vertical currents, interact with the deep water well structures as one of environmental forces. One of the engineering challenges in deep water drilling is temperature gradient. In the past the temperature in the wellbore was ignored and an isothermal system was assumed because no practical means existed to determine the well bore temperature profile. But the fact is that the negative thermal gradient exists between surface to seafloor and it becomes positive below the seafloor. The extreme values could be as low as 40°F and as high as 150∼200°F. In addition to low temperature condition, the significant heat exchange also occurs for high temperature and geothermal reservoirs. The universal matrix form of implicit finite differential equations is introduced to predict the temperature profile of the fluid in the well and near-wellbore formation. This paper is to combine various factors together to derive a solver for the transient temperature modeling during the dirculation of riserless drilling, which can be the basis to describe the near-wellbore well stability under geo-thermal stress and predict the annular pressure during HPHT injection or production, which can also be used to including but not limited to the dynamic temperature profile and bottom-hole temperature, improving cementing program design, casing thermal stresses to be determined.

Robert Waschik in OpenAIREMuch of New South Wales and southern Queensland suffered from extreme drought from 2017 to 2019. This study models drought and bushfires impacts using VU‐TERM, a multi‐regional, dynamic CGE model. Prolonged drought pushed national real GDP to 0.7 per cent or more below base in 2018–2019 and 2019–2020. NSW’s real GDP fell relative to forecast by 1.1 per cent or $6.9 billion in 2018–2019 and 1.6 per cent or $10.2 billion in 2019–2020. These impacts reflect a severe diminution of farm output, given that agriculture accounts for around 1.6 per cent of NSW’s income. Bushfires exacerbated 2019–2020 losses. We assume that there is a full recovery in seasonal conditions in 2020. However, prolonged drought and bushfire destruction deplete farm capital through depressed investment and diminished herd numbers. Consequently, the income earning capacity of farms in recovery remains below that of a no drought base. The net present value of the national welfare loss is $63 billion, split between $53 billion in losses from drought and $10 billion from bushfires. The latter excludes any valuation of human lives lost, flora, fauna or forestry destruction. In the longer term, adaptation and policy responses will need to reflect the expectation of increased frequency of adverse climatic events.

AbstractBACKGROUND: Inappropriate utilisation of biosolids may adversely impact agrosystem productivity. Here, we address the response of wheat (Triticum durum) to different doses (0, 40, 100, 200 and 300 t ha−1) of either municipal solid waste (MSW) compost or sewage sludge in a greenhouse pot experiment. Plant growth, heavy metal uptake, and antioxidant activity were considered.RESULTS: Biomass production of treated plants was significantly enhanced at 40 t ha−1 and 100 t ha−1 of MSW compost (+48% and +78% relative to the control, respectively). At the same doses of sewage sludge, the increase was only 18%. Higher doses of both biosolids restricted significantly the plant growth, in concomitance with the significant accumulation of heavy metals (Ni2+, Pb2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+), especially in leaves. Leaf activities of antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, catalase and superoxide dismutase) were unchanged at 40 t ha−1 MSW compost or sewage sludge, but were significantly stimulated at higher doses (200–300 t ha−1), together with higher leaf concentration of reduced glutathione.CONCLUSION: This preliminary study suggests that a MSW supply at moderate doses (100 t ha−1) could be highly beneficial for wheat productivity. Dwi Hantoko in OpenAIREAbstract Gasification has been increasingly seen as a method to convert solid fuel into combustible syngas. However, these applications require syngas with strict requirements and raw syngas often does not meet these requirements. Therefore, a form of syngas upgrading needs to be applied. One of the most common form of syngas upgrading is removal of CO2, which is often present in large concentrations in raw syngas. The currently existing CO2 removal technologies were either designed not with syngas in mind or for large scale industries, which makes them somewhat inefficient for application with gasification syngas. This calls for more research into efficient removal of CO2, from syngas. In this review, the application of deep eutectic solvent (DES) as one of the potential new absorbent for CO2 removal from gas streams and more specifically from syngas are discussed. DES has garnered attention due to its high CO2 absorption performance, process friendliness, and environmental friendliness. At present, most studies on DES are still limited to basic absorption behavior of the absorbent. This review aims to provide not just a clear picture of the current research situation for DES as CO2 removal absorbent, but also detail the possible research directions that might be taken for the development of DES as CO2 absorbent from syngas. To that end, this paper shall discuss the specific situation of gasification development, syngas utilization, and the current DES research situation including: its advantages compared to conventional absorbents, its current research situation, challenges, and possible future research directions.

Dhahad in OpenAIREAbstract This study presents and evaluates the feasibility of a novel hybridization of modified Kalina cycle, reverse osmosis desalination, and low-temperature water electrolysis utilizing geothermal energy to yield power, distilled water, and hydrogen, respectively. The scientific impact of the current work has been improved considering the features of Sabalan flash-binary geothermal wells in Iran as a real model through a case study. In addition to designing a novel setup, the smart use of multi-heat recovery technique, modifying the base cycle, and utilizing a part of generated distilled water to produce hydrogen by the electrolyzer are the other structural originalities, distinguishing the current work from the previous studies. The suggested system is scrutinized via a parametric study and optimized based on a genetic algorithm. The parametric study demonstrated that the highest sensitivity of varying the performance criteria of the whole system is attributed to the change in flash tank pressure. Moreover, the multi-objective optimization led to achieving the exergy efficiency and trigeneration gain output ratio as 51.3% and 1.7 for the system, respectively. Furthermore, the system was able to produce 4795 kW of power, 5.3 kg/h of hydrogen, and 19.9 kg/s of distilled water.

Abstract Ethyl β-D-glucosiduronic acid was isolated from the urine of male and female rats, and from the urine of an adult male human alcoholic. The isolation and structural studies were carried out by apparently general gas phase procedures for the study of glucosiduronic acids. The methods involve isolation from urine by extraction and ion exchange chromatography, and identification by gas liquid chromatography and by the combined technique of GLC-mass spectrometry.

Use of a pilot-scale fixed-film bioreactor was investigated for remediation of bromate contamination within groundwater. Bromate reduction with stoichiometric production of bromide was observed, providing supporting evidence for complete reduction of bromate with no production of stable intermediates. Reduction of 87-90% bromate from an influent concentration of 1.1 mg L(-1) was observed with retention times of 40-80 h. Lower retention times led to decreases in bromate reduction capability, with 11.5% removal at a 10 h retention time. Nitrate reduction of 76-99% from a 30.7 mg L(-1) as NO(3)(-) influent was observed at retention times of 10-80 h, although an increase in nitrite production to 2.7 mg L(-1) occurred with a 10 h retention time. Backwashing was not required, with the large plastic packing media able to accommodate biomass accumulation without decreases in operational efficiency. This study has provided proof of concept and demonstrated the potential of biological bromate reduction by fixed-film processes for remediation of a bromate contaminated groundwater source.

Sirajuddin Ahmed in OpenAIREFruit and vegetable marketplace waste (FVMW) is an appealing alternative for energy production and should be utilized as a single substrate in anaerobic digestion (AD)–based biogas plants at an industrial-scale level in subtropical climatic countries. India alone generates 961,000 tons of FVMW annually from the major fruit and vegetable markets (FVMs). Utilization of FVMW to produce useful energy by AD could be helpful in meeting the ever-increasing energy demands of these countries. AD of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) by two-phase systems has revealed good results in terms of stability, performance, and biogas generation; however, innovative approaches like plug flow tank reactor (PFTR) with passive solar heating with no mixing and no energy heating coupled with heat balance models and resistance network–based heat balance models need to be researched for subtropical climatic conditions in order to optimize the economics and energy balance of an AD system. Food waste and slaughter house wastes could be utilized successfully as co-substrates with FVW. C/N ratio is a critical performance parameter in the AD systems involving co-substrates; however, the synergistic relationship among co-substrates and characteristics, viz., macro- and micronutrients of individual co-substrates, must be investigated to improve the AD process. The optimum proportions of co-substrates could be determined by individual substrate characterization, biomethanation potential (BMP), and biodegradation kinetic models, thereby saving time and money as compared with random experimentation. Thermal, ultrasonic, and electrical pre-treatment in addition to physical pre-treatment could be effectively used for pre-treating FVW; however, synergy between co-substrates and pre-treatment method must be researched in order to justify the increased cost in extra pre-treatment.

AbstractWarming of freshwaters as a result of climate change is expected to have complex interactions with the toxicity of contaminants to aquatic organisms. The present study evaluated the effects of temperature on the acute toxicity of endosulfan, chlorpyrifos, and phenol to 3 warm water species of fish—silver perch, rainbowfish, and western carp gudgeon—and 1 cold water species, rainbow trout. Endosulfan was more toxic to silver perch at 30 °C and 35 °C than at 15 °C, 20 °C and 25 °C during short exposures of 24 h, but at 96 h, temperature had no effect on toxicity. Toxicity to rainbow trout increased with increasing temperature, whereas warm water species exhibited maximum toxicity at around 30 °C, decreasing again toward 35 °C. Chlorpyrifos became more toxic to all species with increasing temperature. Phenol toxicity to all species decreased at low to intermediate temperatures; but as temperatures increased further toward the upper thermal limit, phenol became more toxic. Increasing toxicity in the upper thermal range of cold water species may contribute to upstream range contraction in rivers with high toxicant loads. In contrast, warm water species may not exhibit a range shift within rivers as a result of interactions between temperature and toxicity. Catchment management to offset global warming at local scales may present opportunities to mitigate increased toxicity of contaminants to fish. Environ Toxicol Chem 2015;34:1809–1817. © 2015 SETAC

Pseudomonas sp. AKS2 isolated from soil degrades polyethylene succinate (PES) efficiently in the laboratory. However, this organism may not be able to degrade PES with similar efficiency in a natural habitat. Since in situ remediation is preferred for the effective removal of recalcitrant materials like plastic, in the current study, bioaugmentation potential of this organism was investigated. To investigate the potential of the AKS2 strain to bioaugment the PES-contaminated soil, a microcosm-based study was carried out wherein naturally attenuated, biostimulated, and AKS2-inoculated (bioaugmented) soil samples were examined for their ability to degrade PES. The results showed better degradation of PES by bioaugmented soil than other microcosms. Consistent with it, a higher number of PES-degrading organisms were found in the bioaugmented microcosm. The bioaugmented microcosm also exhibited a higher level of average well color development in BiOLOG ECO plate assay than the other two. The corresponding Shannon-Weaver index and Gini coefficient revealed a higher soil microbial diversity of bioaugmented microcosm than the others. This was further supported by community-level physiological profile of three different microcosms wherein we have observed better utilization of different carbon sources by bioaugmented microcosms. Collectively, these results demonstrate that bioaugmentation of PES-contaminated soil with AKS2 not only enhances polymer degradation but also increases microbial diversity. Bioaugmentation of soil with AKS2 enhances PES degradation without causing damage to soil ecology. Thus, Pseudomonas sp. AKS2 has the potential to be implemented as a useful tool for in situ bioremediation of PES.
