    This research evaluates the current carbon footprint of vertical farming systems by comparing the impact of one kilogram of butterhead lettuce produced in an operational vertical farm to that of conventional open-field farming (OF), soil-based greenhouse cultivation (GH(s)) and hydroponic greenhouse cultivation (GH(h)) in the Netherlands. A typical farm is defined for OF, GH(s) and GH(h) in the Netherlands, based on existing databases. It is not yet possible to define a typical vertical farm (VF) due to the breadth of approaches. Therefore, an operational vertical farm was used as a case study. Within the dataset the baseline activity data has been collected within the tabs ‘OF’, ‘GH(s)’, GH(h) and ‘VF’. The carbon footprint of each case study was calculated by accounting for all the GHG emissions from activities within the system boundaries, from cradle-to-grave, for the life cycle of both the crop and the farm. These GHG emissions were calculated as follows: CO₂-eq = activity data x EF, where CO2-eq is the carbon footprint of the activity in kg CO2-eq, and EF is the emission factor of the activity in kg CO₂-eq per unit of the activity data, assessed by referring to the IPCC GWP100a characterisation method in SimaPro 9.0.0, which is based on the Ecoinvent 3.6 database. Tab ‘EF’ provides an overview of the emissions factor sources used for activities within the study. Country-specific emission factors for the Netherlands were used for natural gas and electricity consumption to reflect the correct energy mix. By combining the collected activity data with the EFs, the carbon footprints of each farming system were calculated within the tabs ‘FIG04’ and ‘FIG05’. Three scenarios were created to improve the comparability of the baseline data as well as present potential carbon savings as a result of transitioning to renewable energy, which included: the lost carbon sequestration potential as a result of land-use change (FIG06), assuming identical sales packaging for all farming systems (FIG07, FIG08, FIG09), and a transition to renewable energy (FIG10). These scenarios, when considered collectively, greatly reduced the disparity between the carbon footprints of the three farming systems (FIG11 and FIG12). Electricity use represented the largest share in the carbon fooptrint of both baseline and alternative scenario, therefore, the electricity consumption of the VF was compared to that of other VF from literature in the tabs ‘FIG13’ and ‘FIG14’.

    Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency of droughts and intensity of seasonal precipitation in many regions. Semiaquatic mammals should be vulnerable to this increased variability in precipitation, especially in human-modified landscapes where dispersal to suitable habitat or temporary refugia may be limited. Using six years of presence-absence data (2007–2012) spanning years of record-breaking drought and flood conditions, we evaluated regional occupancy dynamics of American mink (Neovison vison) and muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) in a highly altered agroecosystem in Illinois, USA. We used noninvasive sign surveys and a multiseason occupancy modeling approach to estimate annual occupancy rates for both species and related these rates to summer precipitation. We also tracked radiomarked individuals to assess mortality risk for both species when moving in terrestrial areas. Annual model-averaged estimates of occupancy for mink and muskrat were correlated positively to summer precipitation. Mink and muskrats were widespread during a year (2008) with above-average precipitation. However, estimates of site occupancy declined substantially for mink (0.56) and especially muskrats (0.09) during the severe drought of 2012. Mink are generalist predators that probably use terrestrial habitat during droughts. However, mink had substantially greater risk of mortality away from streams. In comparison, muskrats are more restricted to aquatic habitats and likely suffered high mortality during the drought. Our patterns are striking, but a more mechanistic understanding is needed of how semiaquatic species in human-modified ecosystems will respond ecologically in situ to extreme weather events predicted by climate-change models.     At each station, seawater was collected for trace metals sampling at 20 m depth using a Teflon pump (Furon®) with a 40 m Teflon tube connected with a AcroPakTM 1500 capsule w/Supor Memb 0.8/0.2 μm filter. The pump was left to pump to rinse the inner hose and 1 L sample was collected in LDPE bottles (NALGENE) and stored at -20oC until the land-based laboratory analysis. The material was previously cleaned following the trace metals GEOTRACES protocol and the experiments were done in Class 100 clean laboratory or trace metal analysis (QUIMA- IOCAG TM lab).

    Large-scale reforestation can potentially bring both benefits and risks to the water cycle, which needs to be better quantified under future climates to inform reforestation decisions. We identified 477 water-insecure basins worldwide accounting for 44.6% (380.2 Mha) of the global reforestation potential. As many of these basins are in the Asia-Pacific, we used regional coupled land-climate modelling for the period 2041–2070 to reveal that reforestation increases evapotranspiration and precipitation for most water-insecure regions over the Asia-Pacific. This resulted in a statistically significant increase in water yield (p < 0.05) for the Loess Plateau-North China Plain, Yangtze Plain, Southeast China and Irrawaddy regions. Precipitation feedback was influenced by the degree of initial moisture limitation affecting soil moisture response and thus evapotranspiration, as well as precipitation advection from other reforested regions and moisture transport away from the local region. Reforestation also reduces the probability of extremely dry months in most of the water-insecure regions. However, some regions experience non-significant declines in net water yield due to heightened evapotranspiration outstripping increases in precipitation, or declines in soil moisture and advected precipitation.     QTDIAN - Quantification of Technological DIffusion and sociAl constraiNts - is a toolbox of qualitative and quantitative descriptions of socio-technical and political aspects of the energy transition that influence the overall potential, the rate of energy-related technology and service diffusion and the design of the future energy system.   • This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures such as public awareness of and attitudes toward the European Union (EU), and also focused on personal health issues, the Common European Currency, energy questions, development aid, and the rights of EU citizens. Respondents were asked if they thought exposure to the sun was good or bad for their health, how best to protect themselves from the sun, what type of skin, eye, and hair color they had, and what information they had received about the "Europe Against Cancer" campaign. In regard to the Common European Currency, they provided their attitudes toward having one currency for all member states, and commented on how well-informed they were about this issue, if they knew about the conditions that member countries must meet in order to join the European Economic and Monetary Union, if their own country would be able to meet the requirements and what the consequences would be if it did not, when euro coins and notes might be introduced, how the introduction of the single currency should proceed, and how it would affect economic policies and transactions. Questions about energy use and consumption covered problems that could affect the environment, if respondents had made attempts to conserve energy use in recent years and how they might do so in the future, how effective public bodies were in saving energy, and whether energy investment decisions should be left to market forces or to public bodies. Views regarding the availability and cost of energy resources over the next ten years, the importance of nuclear energy, the role of taxes in energy consumption, and whether public or private transportation should be favored in traffic planning decisions were also elicited. A battery of questions about developing countries focused on whether respondents thought there was a need to help poorer countries to develop, whether their own governments provided development aid, whether the European Commission provided such aid and if so, how much, and whether such aid should be increased or decreased. Other questions probed for opinions on whether developing countries used aid money to purchase goods from the EU, whether the Community's aid should be made better known, and how profitable it was to invest in developing countries. Respondents were also asked if they thought Europe, the United States, or Japan was best placed to help poor people, where Europe's exports were sent, if development aid helped to solve certain social and economic problems, and if they felt they received accurate accounts about developing countries from newspapers and television news programs. A few questions also focused on perceptions of the rights of citizens of the EU and where information could be located about such rights. Citizens from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom were asked about their attitudes toward other EU countries, which countries should join the Monetary Union, how important the introduction of the single currency by January 1, 1999, was, and how likely it was that the deadline would be met. Demographic items included age, gender, marital status, household size, monthly income, education, size of community, region, and occupation. (1) Data processing for this collection was performed at the Zentralarchiv fur Empirische Sozialforschung in Cologne, Germany. (2) The codebook and data collection instrument are provided as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.     *The data shows maize yield estimates allocated to mesozones. Yield estimates were derived from Schulze R.E. and Walker N.J. (2007) and then allocated to mesozones by combining with a base mesozone layer obtained from the CSIR Geospatial Analysis Platform (GAP). *This dataset contains Maize, Zea mays L. in South Africa and is the country`s most important field and grain crop. Objectives of the study was to simulate maize yields, and their inter-annual, at a spatial resolution of Quaternary Catchments for 12 different combinations of three plant dates, viz. 15 October, 15 November and 15 December. This was done to evaluate which hybrid lengths and plant dates give the highest yields irrespective of plant dates and hybrid lengths respectively and also which hybrid lengths and plant dates give the lowest coefficients of variation (%) irrespective of plant dates and hybrid lengths respectively.

    This research evaluates the current carbon footprint of vertical farming systems by comparing the impact of one kilogram of butterhead lettuce produced in an operational vertical farm to that of conventional open-field farming (OF), soil-based greenhouse cultivation (GH(s)) and hydroponic greenhouse cultivation (GH(h)) in the Netherlands. A typical farm is defined for OF, GH(s) and GH(h) in the Netherlands, based on existing databases. It is not yet possible to define a typical vertical farm (VF) due to the breadth of approaches. Therefore, an operational vertical farm was used as a case study. Within the dataset the baseline activity data has been collected within the tabs ‘OF’, ‘GH(s)’, GH(h) and ‘VF’. The carbon footprint of each case study was calculated by accounting for all the GHG emissions from activities within the system boundaries, from cradle-to-grave, for the life cycle of both the crop and the farm. These GHG emissions were calculated as follows: CO₂-eq = activity data x EF, where CO2-eq is the carbon footprint of the activity in kg CO2-eq, and EF is the emission factor of the activity in kg CO₂-eq per unit of the activity data, assessed by referring to the IPCC GWP100a characterisation method in SimaPro 9.0.0, which is based on the Ecoinvent 3.6 database. Tab ‘EF’ provides an overview of the emissions factor sources used for activities within the study. Country-specific emission factors for the Netherlands were used for natural gas and electricity consumption to reflect the correct energy mix. By combining the collected activity data with the EFs, the carbon footprints of each farming system were calculated within the tabs ‘FIG04’ and ‘FIG05’. Three scenarios were created to improve the comparability of the baseline data as well as present potential carbon savings as a result of transitioning to renewable energy, which included: the lost carbon sequestration potential as a result of land-use change (FIG06), assuming identical sales packaging for all farming systems (FIG07, FIG08, FIG09), and a transition to renewable energy (FIG10). These scenarios, when considered collectively, greatly reduced the disparity between the carbon footprints of the three farming systems (FIG11 and FIG12). Electricity use represented the largest share in the carbon fooptrint of both baseline and alternative scenario, therefore, the electricity consumption of the VF was compared to that of other VF from literature in the tabs ‘FIG13’ and ‘FIG14’.

    Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency of droughts and intensity of seasonal precipitation in many regions. Semiaquatic mammals should be vulnerable to this increased variability in precipitation, especially in human-modified landscapes where dispersal to suitable habitat or temporary refugia may be limited. Using six years of presence-absence data (2007–2012) spanning years of record-breaking drought and flood conditions, we evaluated regional occupancy dynamics of American mink (Neovison vison) and muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) in a highly altered agroecosystem in Illinois, USA. We used noninvasive sign surveys and a multiseason occupancy modeling approach to estimate annual occupancy rates for both species and related these rates to summer precipitation. We also tracked radiomarked individuals to assess mortality risk for both species when moving in terrestrial areas. Annual model-averaged estimates of occupancy for mink and muskrat were correlated positively to summer precipitation. Mink and muskrats were widespread during a year (2008) with above-average precipitation. However, estimates of site occupancy declined substantially for mink (0.56) and especially muskrats (0.09) during the severe drought of 2012. Mink are generalist predators that probably use terrestrial habitat during droughts. However, mink had substantially greater risk of mortality away from streams. In comparison, muskrats are more restricted to aquatic habitats and likely suffered high mortality during the drought. Our patterns are striking, but a more mechanistic understanding is needed of how semiaquatic species in human-modified ecosystems will respond ecologically in situ to extreme weather events predicted by climate-change models.     At each station, seawater was collected for trace metals sampling at 20 m depth using a Teflon pump (Furon®) with a 40 m Teflon tube connected with a AcroPakTM 1500 capsule w/Supor Memb 0.8/0.2 μm filter. The pump was left to pump to rinse the inner hose and 1 L sample was collected in LDPE bottles (NALGENE) and stored at -20oC until the land-based laboratory analysis. The material was previously cleaned following the trace metals GEOTRACES protocol and the experiments were done in Class 100 clean laboratory or trace metal analysis (QUIMA- IOCAG TM lab).

    Large-scale reforestation can potentially bring both benefits and risks to the water cycle, which needs to be better quantified under future climates to inform reforestation decisions. We identified 477 water-insecure basins worldwide accounting for 44.6% (380.2 Mha) of the global reforestation potential. As many of these basins are in the Asia-Pacific, we used regional coupled land-climate modelling for the period 2041–2070 to reveal that reforestation increases evapotranspiration and precipitation for most water-insecure regions over the Asia-Pacific. This resulted in a statistically significant increase in water yield (p < 0.05) for the Loess Plateau-North China Plain, Yangtze Plain, Southeast China and Irrawaddy regions. Precipitation feedback was influenced by the degree of initial moisture limitation affecting soil moisture response and thus evapotranspiration, as well as precipitation advection from other reforested regions and moisture transport away from the local region. Reforestation also reduces the probability of extremely dry months in most of the water-insecure regions. However, some regions experience non-significant declines in net water yield due to heightened evapotranspiration outstripping increases in precipitation, or declines in soil moisture and advected precipitation.   • This round of Eurobarometer surveys queried respondents on standard Eurobarometer measures such as public awareness of and attitudes toward the European Union (EU), and also focused on personal health issues, the Common European Currency, energy questions, development aid, and the rights of EU citizens. Respondents were asked if they thought exposure to the sun was good or bad for their health, how best to protect themselves from the sun, what type of skin, eye, and hair color they had, and what information they had received about the "Europe Against Cancer" campaign. In regard to the Common European Currency, they provided their attitudes toward having one currency for all member states, and commented on how well-informed they were about this issue, if they knew about the conditions that member countries must meet in order to join the European Economic and Monetary Union, if their own country would be able to meet the requirements and what the consequences would be if it did not, when euro coins and notes might be introduced, how the introduction of the single currency should proceed, and how it would affect economic policies and transactions. Questions about energy use and consumption covered problems that could affect the environment, if respondents had made attempts to conserve energy use in recent years and how they might do so in the future, how effective public bodies were in saving energy, and whether energy investment decisions should be left to market forces or to public bodies. Views regarding the availability and cost of energy resources over the next ten years, the importance of nuclear energy, the role of taxes in energy consumption, and whether public or private transportation should be favored in traffic planning decisions were also elicited. A battery of questions about developing countries focused on whether respondents thought there was a need to help poorer countries to develop, whether their own governments provided development aid, whether the European Commission provided such aid and if so, how much, and whether such aid should be increased or decreased. Other questions probed for opinions on whether developing countries used aid money to purchase goods from the EU, whether the Community's aid should be made better known, and how profitable it was to invest in developing countries. Respondents were also asked if they thought Europe, the United States, or Japan was best placed to help poor people, where Europe's exports were sent, if development aid helped to solve certain social and economic problems, and if they felt they received accurate accounts about developing countries from newspapers and television news programs. A few questions also focused on perceptions of the rights of citizens of the EU and where information could be located about such rights. Citizens from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom were asked about their attitudes toward other EU countries, which countries should join the Monetary Union, how important the introduction of the single currency by January 1, 1999, was, and how likely it was that the deadline would be met. Demographic items included age, gender, marital status, household size, monthly income, education, size of community, region, and occupation. (1) Data processing for this collection was performed at the Zentralarchiv fur Empirische Sozialforschung in Cologne, Germany. (2) The codebook and data collection instrument are provided as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader.     *The data shows maize yield estimates allocated to mesozones. Yield estimates were derived from Schulze R.E. and Walker N.J. (2007) and then allocated to mesozones by combining with a base mesozone layer obtained from the CSIR Geospatial Analysis Platform (GAP). *This dataset contains Maize, Zea mays L. in South Africa and is the country`s most important field and grain crop. Objectives of the study was to simulate maize yields, and their inter-annual, at a spatial resolution of Quaternary Catchments for 12 different combinations of three plant dates, viz. 15 October, 15 November and 15 December. This was done to evaluate which hybrid lengths and plant dates give the highest yields irrespective of plant dates and hybrid lengths respectively and also which hybrid lengths and plant dates give the lowest coefficients of variation (%) irrespective of plant dates and hybrid lengths respectively.
