AbstractIn the past decade, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) have been improved significantly. However, most efficient PSCs are based on halogenated solvents and the spin‐coating technique. To meet the requirements of practical fabrication, PSCs processed from non‐halogenated solvents using scalable deposition techniques are required. In this work, a non‐halogenated solvent system, o‐xylene/benzyl phenyl ether (BPE), was utilized to fabricate PSCs. The PSC obtained through spin coating from o‐xylene/BPE exhibited a high PCE comparable to a PCE spin‐coated from halogenated solvent. The nanostructures of the films processed from different solvents were investigated systematically to understand their performance evolution. Importantly, a spray‐coating technique compatible with the roll‐to‐roll process was employed to fabricate PSCs using an eco‐compatible ink formulation. The PSC spray coated from o‐xylene/BPE in ambient atmosphere gave rise to a PCE of 7.74 % comparable to that of devices spin‐coated from halogenated solvents, which demonstrated a significant potential for further practical fabrication.

We have developed aqueous clay suspensions stabilized by alginate fluid gels (AFG) for coal spontaneous combustion prevention and control. Specially, this study aimed to characterize the effect of AFG on the microstructure, static and dynamic stability, and coal fire inhibition performances of the prepared AFG-stabilized clay suspensions. Compared with aqueous clay suspensions, the AFG-stabilized clay suspensions manifest high static and dynamic stability, which can be ascribed to the formation of a robust three-dimensional gel network by AFG. The coal acceleration oxidation experimental results show that the prepared AFG-stabilized clay suspensions can improve the coal thermal stability and effectively inhibit the coal spontaneous oxidation process by increasing crossing point temperature (CPT) and reducing CO emission. The prepared low-cost and nontoxic AFG-stabilized clay suspensions, exhibiting excellent coal fire extinguishing performances, indicate great application potentials in coal spontaneous combustion prevention and control.

Relying on real options theory, we employ a multistage decision model to analyze the effect of delaying the introduction of emission trading systems (ETS) on power plant investments in carbon capture and storage (CCS) retrofits, on plant operation, and on carbon dioxide (CO2) abatement. Unlike previous studies, we assume that the investment decision is made before the ETS is in place, and we allow CCS operating flexibility for new power plant investments. Thus, the plant may be run in CCS-off mode if carbon prices are low. We employ Monte Carlo simulation methods to account for uncertainties in the prices of CO2 certificates, other inputs, and output prices, relying on a realistic parameterization for a supercritical pulverized coal plant in China. We find that CCS operating flexibility lowers the critical carbon price needed to support CCS investment because it renders CCS investment less irreversible. For a low carbon price path, operating flexibility also implies that delaying the introduction of an ETS hardly affects plant CO2 abatement since the plant operator is better off purchasing emission certificates rather than operating the plant in CCS mode. Interestingly, for low carbon prices we find a U-shaped relation between the length of the delay and the economic value of the plant. Thus, delaying the introduction of an ETS may make investors worse off.

Abstract This work presents the electrochemical properties of gadolinium (Gd), a significant rare earth element in spent nuclear fuel (SNF), in the LiCl KCl eutectic. To explore thermodynamic properties of Gd at the liquid gallium (Ga) electrode, experiments were performed both on the inert tungsten (W) and liquid gallium (Ga) electrode at different temperatures in a range from 723 to 823 K, which show that the Gd metal can be oxidized to Gd (III) by exchanging of 3 electrons. Electrochemical techniques including cyclic voltammetry (CV), open circuit potential (OCP), potentiostatic electrolysis and galvanostatic electrolysis were utilized to detect the electrochemical behavior and evaluate standard apparent potential of the Gd(Ⅲ)/Gd couple, and E Gd(Ⅲ) / Gd * = − 3.456 + 6.2 × 10 − 4 T ( ± 0.046 ) ( vs C l 2 / C l − ) is obtained. In addition, electromotive force (EMF) and coulometric titration were employed to calculate the activity and activity coefficient of Gd in metal Ga. After calculation, the activity is 1 . 791 × 10 − 15 at 723 K and function of activity coefficient and temperature is lg γ = 3.485 − 10927 / T ( ± 0.0875 ) .

Abstract A solar chemical energy storage system with photochemical process and thermochemical process is proposed to convert full-spectrum solar energy into chemical energy. The ultraviolet and part of visible sunlight are firstly absorbed by norbornadiene derivatives, and the norbornadiene derivatives are converted into the related quadricyclane derivatives. When the quadricyclane derivatives are catalyzed, they are converted back to the norbornadiene derivatives for next cycle. The storage and releasing cycle are eco-friendly without CO2 emission. The rest of solar energy, which cannot be used in the solar photochemical process, are exploited by solar thermochemical process, providing heat for methanol decomposition. It is demonstrated that solar photochemical efficiency increases firstly and then it decreases with the increase of cut-off wavelength, while the solar thermochemical efficiency declines with the cut-off wavelength rising. In the hybrid system, the decrease of the solar thermochemical efficiency is balanced by an increase of the solar photochemical efficiency, and the maximum solar-to-chemical efficiency of the hybrid system reaches 68.7%.

Abstract With the increasing urbanization but growing resource scarcities, the securing provision of fundamental resources as food, energy and water (FEW) has become a unique challenge for urban sustainability. This is not only because of continuous demand of resource imports from different regions for urban areas, but also due to the complex interrelationships among FEW systems. In such context, exploring the interactions between FEW resources and economic activities when investigating FEW provisions to meet urban demand through trade is very essential to find effective policy intervention points and priority areas for actions. This paper investigates external binding FEW resource flows with internal certain interlinkages driven by final demand of Beijing city at different nodes along their supply chains, by combing structural path analysis and multi-regional input-output model of China 2010. The results show that the key source regions present overall neighborhood pattern that Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shandong near Beijing are the five leading contributors of tran-regional FEW provisions. The top 20 nexus paths are identified and the most important nexus pathways start with the other services in Beijing. Besides this, the critical supply chains appear divergent directions for FEW flows, driven by food, construction and agriculture industries respectively. Moreover, the key nodes mainly concentrate on less developed regions and energy-related sectors. For example, non-metal products manufacturing in Hebei, petroleum refining and coking in Heilongjiang, and coal mining and washing in Inner Mongolia have larger impacts on all of FEW flows across the supply chains. These results are very informative to targeting our efforts to address the urban FEW nexus issue both from the perspective of supply side and demand side.

Coal is one of the major energy resources in China, accounting for approximately 70 % of primary energy consumption. Many environmental problems and human health risks arise during coal exploitation, utilization, and waste disposal, especially in the remote mountainous areas of western China (e.g., eastern Yunnan, western Guizhou and Hubei, and southern Shaanxi). In this paper, we report a thorough review of the environmental and human health impacts related to coal utilization in China. The abundance of the toxic trace elements such as F, As, Se, and Hg in Chinese coals is summarized. The environmental problems (i.e., water, soil, and air pollution) that are related to coal utilization are outlined. The provenance, distributions, typical symptoms, sources, and possible pathways of endemic fluorosis, arsenism, and selenosis due to improper coal usage (briquettes mixed with high-F clay, mineralized As-rich coal, and Se-rich stone coal) are discussed in detail. In 2010, 14.8, 1.9 million, and 16,000 Chinese people suffered from dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, and arsenism, respectively. Finally, several suggestions are proposed for the prevention and treatment for endemic problems caused by coal utilization.

An innovative method is used to synthesize highly active and bulky BiVO4 with abundant oxygen vacancies for solar water oxidation. The crystal size and oxygen vacancies of BiVO4 can be controlled by adjusting the pH value of the Bi precursor.

In order to demonstrate the potentials of both bioenergy production and microcystin (MC) biodegradation in methanogenic conditions, the biogas production, process stability and the variation of MC concentration in anaerobic digestion of blue algae from Taihu Lake were studied. A methane yield of 189.89 mL g−1 VS was obtained from the digester, and the average methane concentration in the biogas was 36.72%. During the digestion, the pH value was fairly constant (6.8 to 7.6), and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) kept at a relatively stable level. The concentration of total volatile fatty acid (VFA) increased significantly in the first 8 days, and then decreased, showing no inhibition on the digestion. The results also showed that the concentration of MC could be significantly reduced from 1220.19 μg L−1 to 35.17 μg L−1 during the methanogenic process, which followed the first order kinetics well. These findings suggest that anaerobic digestion of blue algae can both generate renewable energy biogas and lead to biodegradation of MC, presenting significant potentials for bioremediation of MC and post-treatment of blue algae.
