Abstract: Biodiversity conservation, a subject that was previously distant from the Brazilian society, is addressed in different international forums, led by the United Nations (UN) notably in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Several Conferences of the Parties (COP) were held and defined actions and goals to be met by nations, which aim to value ecosystems and reduce the extinction of species, guaranteeing genetic diversity; the sustainable use of biodiversity and the real recognition of the cost of ecosystem services provided to society; the sharing of benefits from the use of genetic resources with their communities of origin, including their digital sequences; the provision of relevant financial resources to guarantee training, technical and scientific cooperation; and, equitable access to technology transfer to all countries. All of them require the use of technologies and their dissemination to local populations, in addition to actions within the framework of the bioeconomy concept. This text seeks to bring references to issues involving the use of biological resources, biodiversity, and its economic use, bioeconomy, and suggests a reflection: if the partnership is legitimate, what would be the suitable model?

Companies are increasingly opting for more sustainable modes of transport, such as railways, short sea shipping and river transport, in order to reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact. Currently, humanity is well developed technologically, now turning its attention to a point that cannot be ignored: sustainable production. As progress is made in the production of goods and services, sustainable problems arise due to several linked reasons, one of which is the essential use of logistics. Thus, the research was carried out in a qualitative exploratory manner, benefiting the search for studies that consider logistical transport, designed based on current sustainable needs. The research aimed to evaluate the relationship “logistics x sustainable transport” by verifying discussions on the subject, considering the development goals proposed by Sustainable Development Goal 12 - Responsible consumption and production. The data used were scientific dissertations and theses, in addition to a compilation of materials and documents linked to the key expressions sustainable transport and logistics chain. In the content analysis, it was possible to identify the scarcity of research that relates cargo transportation and sustainability. The results highlighted the lack of research that includes the importance of sustainability applied to logistics modes, in addition to not properly explaining Brazil's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of logistics transport.

Green cloud computing is an initiative aimed at reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions associated with cloud computing, without compromising its functionality and performance. The main focus of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of resource scheduling algorithms in cloud computing data centers and to develop an innovative methodology for calculating energy efficiency scores and classifying energy performance. Using the CloudSim Plus simulation environment, four algorithms - Round Robin (RR), Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Ant Colony System (ACS) - were compared through 800 simulations. In addition to the simulations, the methodology involved analyzing the data through rigorous statistical techniques, including the use of the T-Student table, and creating an energy performance index derived from the results obtained. The research also incorporated artificial intelligence, specifically neural network-based classifiers, to improve the classification of energy levels. The results indicated a significant reduction in energy consumption and CO2 emissions, approximately 55%, and an improvement in the cost-effectiveness of virtual machine allocation, around 28%. This study demonstrates that the adoption of innovative scheduling strategies and the implementation of a quantitative energy evaluation model can significantly optimize cloud computing efficiency. Additionally, the proposal of a new score calculation and the creation of an energy performance scale offer valuable tools for optimization and sustainability in data centers.

Cities are evolving towards becoming more efficient, aiming to improve the quality of life of citizens and the efficiency of operations and urban services, as well as respect and preserve economic, social, and environmental aspects. This challenge of designing and developing a new urban scenario, commonly called a smart city, considers innovation, technology, and governance articulated and integrated. A smart city redefines urban governance by developing new approaches to make cities more efficient, humane, and sustainable. The InovaCID (Smart City with Innovation and Sustainability and Artificial Intelligence) project proposes a smart city that innovates, observes the sustainability of its projects, and uses artificial intelligence (AI) as an enabler of its projects aimed at improving citizens' quality of life. Smart cities with artificial intelligence are an innovation that addresses urban development problems and promotes their optimization. The InovaCID project supports the digital transformation of cities, focusing specifically on health, urban development, and energy efficiency. In the InovaCID project, AI allows aspects of urban centers that were previously difficult to deal with, such as the large volume of data, the heterogeneous requirements, and the multiple objectives inherent to an urban governance context, to be met innovatively and efficiently.

Anthropogenic actions produce planetary impacts and accelerate global warming. Municipalities around the world have been suffering from heat waves, prolonged droughts, torrential rains, tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes, among others, which are increasingly recurrent. The objective of this essay is to show that cities have a strategic role, both in facing these atmospheric changes that we are experiencing, as well as in the decision-making power for coping actions. For this, we use the concept of geographic scale as a methodology, as a conceptual tool to articulate the different conflicting and complex levels of the current climate crisis. Identifying urban singularities, through a closer approximation of people's spatial reality, using this concept, is necessary to mitigate the social consequences of the process. The results elucidated that cities have unique characteristics to generate adaptations to these current climate changes, through a closer and more effective look at the local scale.

B.; ARANTES, M. D. C.; ANDRADE, J. K. B.; VIEIRA, R. S.; CASTRO, A. F. N. M.; MENEZES, A. L.;The objective was to evaluate the physical and energetic characteristics of pellets produced with different lignocellulosic biomasses for bioenergy generation. Moisture and bulk density were determined for biomass and pellets. In addition, for pellets mechanical durability, fines content, diametric compression, diameter, length and unit density were measured. There was an increase in bulk density and a reduction in the moisture content of the fuels produced compared to fresh biomass. The highest averages of mechanical durability were obtained by pellets produced with biomass mixtures. Diameter compression ranged from 0.52 to 5.96 MPa for commercial pellet and 100% elephant grass, respectively. Pellets produced with 100% sugarcane bagasse showed low diametral compression. Regarding the percentage of fines, it is observed that the pellets produced with biomass mixtures presented the lowest averages when compared to those produced with only one biomass. It is observed that the pellets produced with more than one biomass in its composition had the smallest diameters and the average pellet length ranged from 12.87 to 17.85 mm. Unit apparent density ranged from 1,105 (EC50 BC50) to 1,265 kg m-3 (EC50 E50). The pellets produced with lignocellulosic biomass compositions had better performances when compared to those produced with only one biomass.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2023Publisher:Zenodo Authors: PAEZ, Luciano Gagliardi;Climate change already affects everyone.
