description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Part of book or chapter of book 2023 NetherlandsPublisher:Oekom Verlag Authors: Gabriëls, René; Nauta, Wiebe;Against the backdrop of the irreversible and systematic destruction of ecosystems, necessary for the survival and quality of life of people and non-human species, caused by human agency and socio-economic structures, we explore the opportunities and challenges to resist ecocide in relation to socio-economic inequality and the crisis of democracy. To this end, first section focuses on the diagnosis of ecocide. We show that due to three fallacies the connection between ecocide, socio-economic inequality and the crisis of democracy is not sufficiently accentuated. In the second section, several contemporary political measures to deal with ecocide are critically examined. We will argue that Agenda 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals, is part of the problem as it falsely assumes the compatibility of sustainability and economic growth. Finally, in the third section, the opportunities and challenges of resistance to ecocide are discussed with an emphasis on the power asymmetries between the Global North (GN) and the GS.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2009Authors: Kuhlicke, Christian; Kruse, Sylvia; This paper identifies a central challenge relating to the adaptation to climate change on the local level: how to deal with the unknown and how to create a resilient environment. Although a consensus exists that our climate will change to a hitherto unknown extent, the anticipation of local and regional consequences has reached its limits. The primary reason for this is the unknown interference of social development and natural processes. This paper suggests a practical typology of (non-)knowledge and distinguishes between two main strategies of how to deal with unknown developments: anticipation and resilience. In a case study on the extreme Elbe flood in 2002, local adaptation strategies and lessons learned are investigated against the background of the previously introduced concepts of the unknown and adaptation strategies. The empirical findings show a gap between the local activities during and after the flood event and the scientific concepts of resilient adaptation strategies. Local actions mainly rely on anticipation and strong expectations. Resilient features are hard to detect and mostly come into conflict with the realized local adaptation strategy.

L. officinalis, O. syriacum und T. spicata are increasingly cultivated in Turkey because of their essential oils. Due to the lack of drying facilities, drying is frequently performed directly in the sun or in the shade. Solar-drying would be an alternative. Objective of the research was to investigate the influence of the fluctuating drying conditions during shade-, sun- and solar-drying on drug quality in comparison with drying at a constant temperature of 40 degrees C. Essential oil content was analysed by Neo-Clevenger-distillation and flavor by Solid-Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME). In terms of essential oil content, results have shown that only for T spicata shade-drying is superior to the other methods. For L. officinalis and O. syriacum equal or higher oil contents were found for sun-drying and best results were achieved by solar-drying. In terms of flavor, slight shifts in the composition have been recorded for the different drying methods. WOS: 000254734100003

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2018Authors: Pez, Peter; In spite of industrialisation and urbanisation, agriculture is still an important part of the Dutch economic landscape. The importance of export is high, especially for vegetables, flowers, meat and dairy products. This results from a development over 150 years in which agricultural conditions have changed from the so-called "von Thünen system" to highly efficient industrial production and distribution methods based on capital input, modern transport systems and lowering economic barriers (duties, import restrictions) in the EU. Today, factors like agglomeration advantages, specific skills and research institutions are particularly relevant, especially in horticulture. The regional structure of agricultural specialisation also depends on soil conditions, geomorphology and traditional farm sizes. Now and in the future, environmental problems like groundwater pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases are of high importance. Reflecting the political discussion and reacting to the declining number of farms and employees, organic farming and renewable energy generation seem to be suitable ways to manage structural change in the primary sector.

Studiengang Bauplanung und Bauwirtschaft (Bachelor) Authors: Juritz, Jemima Elisabeth;Sustainability is a topic that concerns people worldwide and is becoming increasingly important. As a result, sustainable construction is increasingly important in the construction industry. At the beginning of the paper, a construction project is examined in more detail. For this purpose, the different phases and the parties involved are explained. The client, the planners, the project management and the planning coordination, as well as their respective areas of responsibility are explained in more detail. The planning coordinator is hired by the client and is supposed to work together with the planners. The tasks of the planning coordinator concern the preparation of a health and safety plan and the documentation for upcoming construction tasks. In construction, sustainability is mostly divided into ecological and economic sustainability. The ecological dimension deals with the building materials used, which should not be resource-intensive. The economic dimension, on the other hand, deals with the entire life cycle of the building materials and the building. Furthermore it deals with the costs and the flexibility of usage of the building, as well as the possibilities for reconstruction and the need for renovation. The economic dimension of sustainability is very important for the environment as well as for the building’s owner, because the building’s owner can save a lot of money. The costs that arise over the entire life cycle are much higher than the construction costs. The document for upcoming construction tasks deals with the longevity and the maintenance intensity of components, as well as the conversion possibilities of a building. The planning coordinator knows in advance whether a building will have high life cycle costs or not. The advice of the planning coordinator should be taken into account. In this way, a building project can be designed more sustainably and on a slightly reduced budget. However, if the planning coordinator is not involved in the planning, the influence of the planning coordination on sustainability is extremely low.

Botanic gardens are local recreational areas that provide the general public with many opportunities to learn about plants and science, but their great potential for sustainability education has rarely been tapped. This study uses the Munich Botanic Garden as a fitting backdrop to contribute to the learning area of ‘Education for Sustainable Development’ (ESD). The thesis focuses on an ESD concept called ‘Shaping Competence’ and implements it in an exhibition that encourages visitors to educate themselves by adopting perspectives they were previously not familiar with. The exhibition, titled “The Fruits of Labor – Crops in the Context of Globalization“, centers on economically significant exotic plants which play a role in the key issues sustainable development has been facing. To highlight these issues in the garden, information boards were put up next to the crops in question. The boards all featured an image of an exemplary producer of the respective crop. Speech bubbles were placed next to these images to make the exhibition’s content more accessible to visitors and address them directly (e.g. as consumers). The author used a three-part evaluation process to study how the visitors perceived the exhibition and then evaluated the results using qualitative methods. The study results suggest that the garden’s visitors have in fact gained in competency by critically engaging with the exhibition. The research contribution has helped expand the field of informal learning within ESD and has addressed the necessity to test didactic approaches to sustainability education which go beyond sheer knowledge transfer, promote both competency development and reflection processes, and expand the capacity of action for adult target audiences.

A major goal of sustainable construction is minimization of energy and resources consumption. To ensure careful use of fossil fuels, the strategies of consistency, efficiency, and sufficiency are pursued. For this purpose, appropriate elements have to be found for the building as an entity. Use potentials of the building shell and heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) systems as well as the user behavior are outlined, with the focus lying on building automation. Apart from the HVAC systems and illumination control, general building automation also includes electric power distribution to the other consumers. Major potentials result from demand-based operation of HVAC systems and a high control accuracy to maintain the specified indoor climate parameters. In addition, load shifting of power consumers may contribute to stability of a future power grid with a high share of renewables.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Bachelor thesis 2020 AustriaPublisher:FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences. The international trade is closely linked to the maritime transport, due to its enormous capacity and low transport costs, which makes it a highly significant carrier for global goods. Hence to the global scale of trade the maritime transport can only survive if it studies these global effects and reacts accordingly. As the need for transport can already arise during production of a product and not just for the final delivery, a strong dependency is formed to the economic constitution, in which a decline in production can mean a considerably higher decline in the need for transport. This disproportional dependency raises the need to be able to detect economic and ecologic trends early, and to react accordingly. Alongside these economic factors that affect maritime shipping, there are other noteworthy influences like climate change, political development, energy sources used, or availability of natural resources, which potential effects need to be monitored closely by companies within the marine sector. The goal of the bachelor thesis “route optimization in container shipping: measures for the reduction of CO2-emissions, as well as alternative fuels and drive systems” is to provide a collected overview of options of optimization of routes in relation to fuel economy, cost savings, time efficiency, and safety without losing track of the aspect of sustainability. The thesis starts with an explanation on how the sustainable state of mind in the logistics industry came to be, and how the trend of “Green Logistics” found its place in the marine industry, as well as which potential ecological damage will further play a part within the maritime logistic. Within the chapter “Route Optimization” there are detailed information about strategic, and organizational measures to adapt sea routes for optimization, as well as safety. Detailing key points like weather routing, slow steaming, and the long prevalent, but now modernized piracy. Technical measures to correct routes according to emission savings and sustainability will be discussed more closely within chapter “Hull and Drive Optimization”. Innovative and alternative drive options like windassisted drive or the application of liquified natural gas LNG present options that require a higher investment but involve important benefits. In the conclusion of this paper several legal frameworks, as well as regulations will be outlines to indicate possibilities of sustainable advancement of sea routes.

Today's travel market is characterised by an oversupply and a wide variety of climate labels, which makes it difficult for consumers to maintain an overview and often cannot distinguish green-washed products from correctly certified ones. Companies promise to commit to environmental protection without implementing specific measures. In addition, there is the steady growth of the tourism industry, which contributes to climate change with its CO2 emissions, especially from air travel. In combination with a change in values and an increased awareness of many consumers for climate-friendly travel, the research question arises: "How can responsible customers travel in the most climate-friendly way possible? In this paper, offers of climate-friendly travel are presented. With the help of the thesis, responsible customers should be offered an orientation so that they can organize their trip as climate friendly as possible and especially find offers for arrival and departure. Thus, the primary goal of this bachelor’s thesis is to present information and offers for climate-friendly holidays, so that individual planning of the trip is facilitated, and consumers are given an insight into the present matter of climate change and the associated climate protection. To this end, a comprehensive literature search and analysis was first carried out to present the current state of research. Subsequently, individual climate-friendly quality labels and projects were presented to give consumers an overview of the climate-friendly offers. Finally, various tips for climate-friendly travel were listed so that consumers can be supported in planning their holidays in the most climate-friendly way possible based on the listed selection of offers. As a result, climate-friendly tourism is a gentle form of travel with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, only the well-thought-out implementation of a trip can make a positive contribution to climate friendliness. Finally, recommendations and useful tips for climate-friendly holiday planning were presented. It is important to use a low-CO2 means of transport to and from the destination and to choose climate-friendly activities on site that are emission-free and can be reached on foot or by bicycle. Accommodation that itself pays attention to sustainability and climate protection should also be chosen. The climate-friendly traveller can use the tips to make his/her holiday as climate-friendly as possible.

Department für Management und Business . Institut International Management and Entrepreneurship. Sustainability is one of the focus topics of the economic and political discourse in2022. The multidimensional aspects of this complex topic with regard to the perspective of business enterprises gather under the acronym ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance). These are an important factor in changing our global economic system towards a more sustainable, resource-conserving and partially circular system. Consumer behavior is also changing from a sustainability perspective. Companies are being forced, partly by legal frameworks, but also by changing consumer demand, to publish their own sustainability balance sheets and ESG indicators. It is precisely the necessary transparency and comparability of companies' sustainability efforts that pose a particular challenge to all stakeholders in this process. Therefore numerous associations are working on standardized target systems to provide uniform guidelines for a sustainable orientation of companies. One of these are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. The textile sector in particular faces major challenges due to complex, global supply chains and high resource use. In this paper, exemplary four companies from the outdoor clothing sector were investigated.First approaches to introduce circularity, especially in cooperation with endcustomers, are already visible. A differing picture emerges, especially in the transparency of the information published. All companies deal intensively with the topic of sustainability, but there are major differences in the level of detail regarding the information published. The concept of the SDGs is not found everywhere in the companies’ communication. Nevertheless, the analysis gives the impression of being on the right track. However, further efforts are necessary to make sustainability communication even more comparable and transparent in the future, especially for end customers.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Part of book or chapter of book 2023 NetherlandsPublisher:Oekom Verlag Authors: Gabriëls, René; Nauta, Wiebe;Against the backdrop of the irreversible and systematic destruction of ecosystems, necessary for the survival and quality of life of people and non-human species, caused by human agency and socio-economic structures, we explore the opportunities and challenges to resist ecocide in relation to socio-economic inequality and the crisis of democracy.
