    Cable structure is a major component of long-span bridges, such as cable-stayed and suspension bridges, and it transfers the main loads of bridges to the pylons. As these cable structures are exposed to continuous external loads, such as vehicle and wind loads, vibration control and continuous monitoring of the cable are required. In this study, an electromagnetic (EM) damper was designed and fabricated for vibration control and monitoring of the cable structure. EM dampers, also called regenerative dampers, consist of permanent magnets and coils. The electromagnetic force due to the relative motion between the coil and the permanent magnet can be used to control the vibration of the structure. The electrical energy can be used as a power source for the monitoring system. The effects of the design parameters of the damper were numerically analyzed and the damper was fabricated. The characteristics of the damper were analyzed with various external load changes. Finally, the vibration-control and energy-harvesting performances of the cable structure were evaluated through a hybrid simulation. The vibration-control and energy-harvesting performances for various loads were analyzed and the applicability to the cable structure of the EM damper was evaluated.

    The paper introduces a step-down converter that exhibits a static conversion ratio of cubic nature, providing an output voltage which is much closer to the input voltage, and at the same duty cycle, compared to a wide class of one-transistor buck-type topologies. Although the proposed topology contains many components, its control is still simple, as it employs only one transistor. A dc analysis is performed, the semiconductor stresses are derived in terms of input and output voltages and output power, revealing that the semiconductor voltage stresses remain acceptable and anyway lower than in other cubic buck topology. All detailed design equations are provided. The state-space approach is used to analyze the converter in the presence of conduction losses and a procedure for calculating the individual power dissipation is provided. The feasibility of the proposed cubic buck topology is first validated by computer simulation and finally confirmed by an experimental 12 V–10 W prototype.

    Using distributed MEMS pressure sensors to measure small flow rates in high resistance fluidic channels is fraught with challenges far beyond the performance of the pressure sensing element. In a typical core-flood experiment, which may last several months, flow-induced pressure gradients are generated in porous rock core samples wrapped in a polymer sheath. Measuring these pressure gradients along the flow path requires high resolution pressure measurement while contending with difficult test conditions such as large bias pressures (up to 20 bar) and temperatures (up to 125 °C), as well as the presence of corrosive fluids. This work is directed at a system for using passive wireless inductive-capacitive (LC) pressure sensors that are distributed along the flow path to measure the pressure gradient. The sensors are wirelessly interrogated with readout electronics placed exterior to the polymer sheath for continuous monitoring of experiments. Using microfabricated pressure sensors that are smaller than ø15 × 3.0 mm3, an LC sensor design model for minimizing pressure resolution, accounting for sensor packaging and environmental artifacts is investigated and experimentally validated. A test setup, built to provide fluid-flow pressure differentials to LC sensors with conditions that mimic placement of the sensors within the wall of the sheath, is used to test the system. Experimental results show the microsystem operating over full-scale pressure range of 20,700 mbar and temperatures up to 125 °C, while achieving pressure resolution of <1 mbar, and resolving gradients of 10–30 mL/min, which are typical in core-flood experiments.

    Measurement of pH in aqueous-organic mixtures with different compositions is of high importance in science and technology, but it is, at the same time, challenging both from a conceptual and practical standpoint. A big part of the difficulty comes from the fundamental incomparability of conventional pH values between solvents (spH, solvent-specific scales). The recent introduction of the unified pH (pHabs) concept opens up the possibility of measuring pH, expressed as pHabsH2O, in a way that is comparable between solvent, and, thereby, removing the conceptual problem. However, practical issues remain. This work presents the experience of the authors with measuring pHabsH2O values in mixtures of methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile, with water, but without the presence of buffers or other additives. The aim was to assigned pHabsH2O values to solvent–water mixtures using differential potentiometry and the ‘pHabs-ladder’ method. Measurements were made of the potential difference between glass electrodes immersed in different solutions, separated by an ionic liquid salt bridge. Data were acquired for a series of solutions of varying solvent content. This work includes experiences related to: a selection of commercial electrodes, purity of starting material, and comparability between laboratories. Ranges of pHabsH2O values for selected compositions of solvent–water mixtures are presented.

    Optimizing the operation of photovoltaic (PV) storage systems is crucial for meeting the load demands of parks while minimizing curtailment and enhancing economic efficiency. This paper proposes a multi-scenario collaborative optimization strategy for PV storage systems based on a master–slave game model. Three types of energy storage system (ESS) application scenarios are designed to comprehensively stabilize PV fluctuations, compensate for load transfers, and participate in the frequency regulation (FR) market, thereby optimizing the overall operational strategy of PV storage systems in parks. The upper-level objective is to maximize the park operators’ profit, while the lower-level objective is to minimize the user’s power supply costs. Case studies demonstrate that this strategy can significantly increase the economic benefits for park operators by 25.8%, reduce user electricity expenditures by 5.27%, and lower curtailment through a load response mechanism, thereby promoting the development and construction of PV storage parks.

    Building on recent unsupervised Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) algorithms that use graph Laplacian regularization (GLR) and achieve state-of-the-art performance, in this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised approach to design an underlying graph to model the correlation within time-series smart meter measurements. We propose a variable-length data segmentation approach to extract potential events, assign all measurements associated with an identified event to each graph node, employ dynamic time warping to define the adjacency matrix of the graph, and propose a robust cluster labeling approach. Our simulation results on four different datasets show up to 10% improvement in classification performance over competing approaches.

    A central concern for large-scale sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) has been battery capacity and how to recharge it. Recent advances have pointed to a technique capable of collecting energy from radio frequency (RF) waves called radio frequency-based energy harvesting (RF-EH) as a solution for low-power networks where cables or even changing the battery is unfeasible. The technical literature addresses energy harvesting techniques as an isolated block by dealing with energy harvesting apart from the other aspects inherent to the transmitter and receiver. Thus, the energy spent on data transmission cannot be used together to charge the battery and decode information. As an extension to them, we propose here a method that enables the information to be recovered from the battery charge by designing a sensor network operating with a semanticfunctional communication framework. Moreover, we propose an event-driven sensor network in which batteries are recharged by applying the technique RF-EH. In order to evaluate system performance, we investigated event signaling, event detection, empty battery, and signaling success rates, as well as the Age of Information (AoI). We discuss how the main parameters are related to the system behavior based on a representative case study, also discussing the battery charge behavior. Numerical results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

    This paper deals with developing and implementing a bidirectional galvanically isolated on-board charger of a high-power density. The power density of the new charger was 4 kW/kg and 2.46 kW/dm3, and the maximum efficiency was 96.4% at 3.4 kW. Due to the requirement to achieve a high-power density, a single-stage inverter topology was used. Regarding switching losses, due to the topology of the circuit with so-called hard switching, the switching frequency was set to 150 kHz. A laboratory prototype was built to verify the properties and operating principles of the described charger topology. The on-board charger has been tested in a microgrid test platform. Due to the parasitic properties of the transformer and other electronic components, overvoltage with subsequent oscillations occurred on the primary side of the transformer and damped resonance on its secondary side. These parasitic properties caused interference and especially voltage stress on the semiconductor elements. These undesirable phenomena have been eliminated by adding an active element to the charger topology and a new transistor control strategy. This new switching control strategy of transistors has been patented.

    High end-to-end delay is a significant challenge in the data collection process in the underwater environment. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are a considerably reliable source of data collection if they have significant trajectory movement. Therefore, in this paper, a new routing algorithm known as Elliptical Shaped Efficient Data Gathering (ESEDG) is introduced for the AUV movement. ESEDG is divided into two phases: first, an elliptical trajectory has been designed for the horizontal movement of the AUV. In the second phase, the AUV gathers data from Gateway Nodes (GNs) which are associated with Member Nodes (MNs). For their association, an end-to-end delay model is also presented in ESEDG. The hierarchy of data collection is as follows: MNs send data to GNs, the AUV receives data from GNs, and forwards it to the sink node. Furthermore, the ESEDG was evaluated on the network simulator NS-3 version 3.35, and the results were compared to existing data collection routing protocols DSG–DGA, AEEDCO, AEEDCO-A, ALP, SEDG, and AEDG. In terms of network throughput, end-to-end delay, lifetime, path loss, and energy consumption, the results showed that ESEDG outperformed the baseline routing protocols.

    Cable structure is a major component of long-span bridges, such as cable-stayed and suspension bridges, and it transfers the main loads of bridges to the pylons. As these cable structures are exposed to continuous external loads, such as vehicle and wind loads, vibration control and continuous monitoring of the cable are required. In this study, an electromagnetic (EM) damper was designed and fabricated for vibration control and monitoring of the cable structure. EM dampers, also called regenerative dampers, consist of permanent magnets and coils. The electromagnetic force due to the relative motion between the coil and the permanent magnet can be used to control the vibration of the structure. The electrical energy can be used as a power source for the monitoring system. The effects of the design parameters of the damper were numerically analyzed and the damper was fabricated. The characteristics of the damper were analyzed with various external load changes. Finally, the vibration-control and energy-harvesting performances of the cable structure were evaluated through a hybrid simulation. The vibration-control and energy-harvesting performances for various loads were analyzed and the applicability to the cable structure of the EM damper was evaluated.

    The paper introduces a step-down converter that exhibits a static conversion ratio of cubic nature, providing an output voltage which is much closer to the input voltage, and at the same duty cycle, compared to a wide class of one-transistor buck-type topologies. Although the proposed topology contains many components, its control is still simple, as it employs only one transistor. A dc analysis is performed, the semiconductor stresses are derived in terms of input and output voltages and output power, revealing that the semiconductor voltage stresses remain acceptable and anyway lower than in other cubic buck topology. All detailed design equations are provided. The state-space approach is used to analyze the converter in the presence of conduction losses and a procedure for calculating the individual power dissipation is provided. The feasibility of the proposed cubic buck topology is first validated by computer simulation and finally confirmed by an experimental 12 V–10 W prototype.

    Using distributed MEMS pressure sensors to measure small flow rates in high resistance fluidic channels is fraught with challenges far beyond the performance of the pressure sensing element. In a typical core-flood experiment, which may last several months, flow-induced pressure gradients are generated in porous rock core samples wrapped in a polymer sheath. Measuring these pressure gradients along the flow path requires high resolution pressure measurement while contending with difficult test conditions such as large bias pressures (up to 20 bar) and temperatures (up to 125 °C), as well as the presence of corrosive fluids. This work is directed at a system for using passive wireless inductive-capacitive (LC) pressure sensors that are distributed along the flow path to measure the pressure gradient. The sensors are wirelessly interrogated with readout electronics placed exterior to the polymer sheath for continuous monitoring of experiments. Using microfabricated pressure sensors that are smaller than ø15 × 3.0 mm3, an LC sensor design model for minimizing pressure resolution, accounting for sensor packaging and environmental artifacts is investigated and experimentally validated. A test setup, built to provide fluid-flow pressure differentials to LC sensors with conditions that mimic placement of the sensors within the wall of the sheath, is used to test the system. Experimental results show the microsystem operating over full-scale pressure range of 20,700 mbar and temperatures up to 125 °C, while achieving pressure resolution of <1 mbar, and resolving gradients of 10–30 mL/min, which are typical in core-flood experiments.

    Measurement of pH in aqueous-organic mixtures with different compositions is of high importance in science and technology, but it is, at the same time, challenging both from a conceptual and practical standpoint. A big part of the difficulty comes from the fundamental incomparability of conventional pH values between solvents (spH, solvent-specific scales). The recent introduction of the unified pH (pHabs) concept opens up the possibility of measuring pH, expressed as pHabsH2O, in a way that is comparable between solvent, and, thereby, removing the conceptual problem. However, practical issues remain. This work presents the experience of the authors with measuring pHabsH2O values in mixtures of methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile, with water, but without the presence of buffers or other additives. The aim was to assigned pHabsH2O values to solvent–water mixtures using differential potentiometry and the ‘pHabs-ladder’ method. Measurements were made of the potential difference between glass electrodes immersed in different solutions, separated by an ionic liquid salt bridge. Data were acquired for a series of solutions of varying solvent content. This work includes experiences related to: a selection of commercial electrodes, purity of starting material, and comparability between laboratories. Ranges of pHabsH2O values for selected compositions of solvent–water mixtures are presented.

    Optimizing the operation of photovoltaic (PV) storage systems is crucial for meeting the load demands of parks while minimizing curtailment and enhancing economic efficiency. This paper proposes a multi-scenario collaborative optimization strategy for PV storage systems based on a master–slave game model. Three types of energy storage system (ESS) application scenarios are designed to comprehensively stabilize PV fluctuations, compensate for load transfers, and participate in the frequency regulation (FR) market, thereby optimizing the overall operational strategy of PV storage systems in parks. The upper-level objective is to maximize the park operators’ profit, while the lower-level objective is to minimize the user’s power supply costs. Case studies demonstrate that this strategy can significantly increase the economic benefits for park operators by 25.8%, reduce user electricity expenditures by 5.27%, and lower curtailment through a load response mechanism, thereby promoting the development and construction of PV storage parks.

    Building on recent unsupervised Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) algorithms that use graph Laplacian regularization (GLR) and achieve state-of-the-art performance, in this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised approach to design an underlying graph to model the correlation within time-series smart meter measurements. We propose a variable-length data segmentation approach to extract potential events, assign all measurements associated with an identified event to each graph node, employ dynamic time warping to define the adjacency matrix of the graph, and propose a robust cluster labeling approach. Our simulation results on four different datasets show up to 10% improvement in classification performance over competing approaches.

    A central concern for large-scale sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) has been battery capacity and how to recharge it. Recent advances have pointed to a technique capable of collecting energy from radio frequency (RF) waves called radio frequency-based energy harvesting (RF-EH) as a solution for low-power networks where cables or even changing the battery is unfeasible. The technical literature addresses energy harvesting techniques as an isolated block by dealing with energy harvesting apart from the other aspects inherent to the transmitter and receiver. Thus, the energy spent on data transmission cannot be used together to charge the battery and decode information. As an extension to them, we propose here a method that enables the information to be recovered from the battery charge by designing a sensor network operating with a semanticfunctional communication framework. Moreover, we propose an event-driven sensor network in which batteries are recharged by applying the technique RF-EH. In order to evaluate system performance, we investigated event signaling, event detection, empty battery, and signaling success rates, as well as the Age of Information (AoI). We discuss how the main parameters are related to the system behavior based on a representative case study, also discussing the battery charge behavior. Numerical results corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

    This paper deals with developing and implementing a bidirectional galvanically isolated on-board charger of a high-power density. The power density of the new charger was 4 kW/kg and 2.46 kW/dm3, and the maximum efficiency was 96.4% at 3.4 kW. Due to the requirement to achieve a high-power density, a single-stage inverter topology was used. Regarding switching losses, due to the topology of the circuit with so-called hard switching, the switching frequency was set to 150 kHz. A laboratory prototype was built to verify the properties and operating principles of the described charger topology. The on-board charger has been tested in a microgrid test platform. Due to the parasitic properties of the transformer and other electronic components, overvoltage with subsequent oscillations occurred on the primary side of the transformer and damped resonance on its secondary side. These parasitic properties caused interference and especially voltage stress on the semiconductor elements. These undesirable phenomena have been eliminated by adding an active element to the charger topology and a new transistor control strategy. This new switching control strategy of transistors has been patented.

    High end-to-end delay is a significant challenge in the data collection process in the underwater environment. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are a considerably reliable source of data collection if they have significant trajectory movement. Therefore, in this paper, a new routing algorithm known as Elliptical Shaped Efficient Data Gathering (ESEDG) is introduced for the AUV movement. ESEDG is divided into two phases: first, an elliptical trajectory has been designed for the horizontal movement of the AUV. In the second phase, the AUV gathers data from Gateway Nodes (GNs) which are associated with Member Nodes (MNs). For their association, an end-to-end delay model is also presented in ESEDG. The hierarchy of data collection is as follows: MNs send data to GNs, the AUV receives data from GNs, and forwards it to the sink node. Furthermore, the ESEDG was evaluated on the network simulator NS-3 version 3.35, and the results were compared to existing data collection routing protocols DSG–DGA, AEEDCO, AEEDCO-A, ALP, SEDG, and AEDG. In terms of network throughput, end-to-end delay, lifetime, path loss, and energy consumption, the results showed that ESEDG outperformed the baseline routing protocols.
