    Abstract. Wake steering is a technique that optimizes the energy production of a wind farm by employing yaw control to misalign upstream turbines with the incoming wind direction. This work highlights the important dependence between wind direction variations and wake steering optimization. The problem is formalized over time as the succession of multiple steady-state yaw control problems interconnected by the rotational constraints of the turbines and the evolution of the wind. Then, this work proposes a reformulation of the yaw optimization problem of each time step by augmenting the objective function by a new heuristic based on a wind prediction. The heuristic acts as a penalization for the optimization, encouraging solutions that will guarantee future energy production. Finally, a synthetic sensitivity analysis of the wind direction variations and wake steering optimization is conducted. Because of the rotational constraints of the turbines, as the magnitude of the wind direction fluctuations increases, the importance of considering wind prediction in a steady-state optimization is empirically demonstrated. The heuristic proposed in this work greatly improves the performance of controllers and significantly reduces the complexity of the original sequential decision problem by decreasing the number of decision variables.

    Abstract. Design of an optimal wind farm topology and wind farm control scheduling depends on the chosen metric. The objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of optimal wind farm control on the optimal wind farm layout in terms of power production. A successful fulfilment of this goal requires: 1) an accurate and fast flow model; 2) selection of the minimum set of design parameters that rules the problem; and 3) selection of an optimization algorithm with good scaling properties. For control of the individual wind farm turbines, the two most obvious strategies are wake steering based on active wind turbine yaw control and wind turbine derating. The present investigation is a priori limited to wind turbine derating. A high-speed linearized CFD RANS solver models the flow field and the crucial wind turbine wake interactions inside the wind farm. The actuator disk method is used to model the wind turbines, and utilizing an aerodynamic model, the design space of the optimization problem is reduced to only three variables per turbine – two geometric and one carefully selected variable specifying the individual wind turbine derating setting for each mean wind speed and direction. The full design space spanned by these (2N + Nd Ns N) parameters, where N is the number of wind farm turbines, Nd is the number of direction bins, and Ns is the number of mean wind speed bins. This design space is decomposed in two subsets, which in turn define a nested set of optimization problems to achieve the fastest possible optimization procedure. Following a simplistic sanity check of the platform functionality regarding wind farm layout and control optimization, the capabilities of the developed optimization platform is demonstrated on the Swedish offshore wind farm. For this particular wind farm, the analysis demonstrates that the expected annual energy production can be increased by 4 % by integrating the wind farm control in the design of the wind farm layout, which is 1.2 % higher than what is achieved by optimizing the layout only.

    Abstract. The concept of wake steering on wind farms for power maximization has gained significant popularity over the last decade. Recent field trials described in the literature not only demonstrate the real potential of wake steering on commercial wind farms but also show that wake steering does not yet consistently lead to an increase in energy production for all inflow conditions. Moreover, a recent survey among experts shows that validation of the concept currently remains the largest barrier to adoption. In response, this article presents the results of a field experiment investigating wake steering in three-turbine arrays at an onshore wind farm in Italy. This experiment was performed as part of the European CL-Windcon project. While important, this experiment excludes an analysis of the structural loads and focuses solely on the effects of wake steering on power production. The measurements show increases in power production of up to 35 % for two-turbine interactions and up to 16 % for three-turbine interactions. However, losses in power production are seen for various regions of wind directions too. In addition to the gains achieved through wake steering at downstream turbines, more interesting to note is that a significant share in gains is from the upstream turbines, showing an increased power production of the yawed turbine itself compared to baseline operation for some wind directions. Furthermore, the surrogate model, while capturing the general trends of wake interaction, lacks the details necessary to accurately represent the measurements. This article supports the notion that further research is necessary, notably on the topics of wind farm modeling and experiment design, before wake steering will lead to consistent energy gains on commercial wind farms.

    Abstract. Lidar systems have the potential of alleviating structural loads on wind turbines by providing a preview of the incoming wind field to the control system. For a collective pitch controller the important quantity of interest is the rotor-effective wind speed (REWS). In this study, we present a model of the coherence between the REWS and its estimate from continuous-wave nacelle-mounted lidar systems. The model uses the spectral tensor definition of the Mann model. Model results were compared to field data gathered from a 2- and 4-beam nacelle lidar mounted on a wind turbine. The comparison shows close agreement for the coherence and the data fits better to the proposed model than to a model based on the Kaimal turbulence model, which underestimates the coherence. Inflow conditions with larger length scales led to a higher coherence between REWS and lidar estimates than inflow turbulence of smaller length scale. When comparing the two lidar systems, it was shown that the 4-beam lidar is able to resolve small turbulent structures with a higher degree of coherence. Further, the advection speed by which the turbulent structures are transported from measurement to rotor plane can be estimated by 10 minute averages of the lidar estimation of REWS. The presented model can be used as a computationally efficient tool to optimize the position of the lidar focus points in order to maximize the coherence.

    Abstract. This paper applies a large-eddy actuator line approach to the simulation of wind turbine wakes. In addition to normal operating conditions, a specific focus of the paper is on wake manipulation, which is performed here by derating, yaw misalignment and cyclic pitching of the blades. With the purpose of clarifying the ability of LES methods to represent conditions that are relevant for wind farm control, numerical simulations are compared to experimental observations obtained in a boundary layer wind tunnel with scaled wind turbine models. Results indicate a good overall matching of simulations with experiments. Low-turbulence test cases appear to be more challenging than moderate- and high-turbulence ones due to the need for denser grids to limit numerical diffusion and accurately resolve tip-shed vortices in the near-wake region.

    Abstract. Wind farm control is one of the solutions recently proposed to increase the overall energy production of a wind power plant. A generic wind farm control is typically synthesized so as to optimize the energy production of the entire wind farm by reducing the detrimental effects due to wake–turbine interactions. As a matter of fact, the performance of a farm control is typically measured by looking at the increase in the power production, properly weighted through the wind statistics. Sometimes, fatigue loads are also considered in the control optimization problem. However, an aspect which is rather overlooked in the literature on this subject is the evaluation of the impact that a farm control law has on the individual wind turbine in terms of maximum loads and dynamic response under extreme conditions. In this work, two promising wind farm controls, based on wake redirection (WR) and dynamic induction control (DIC) strategy, are evaluated at the level of a single front-row wind turbine. To do so, a two-pronged analysis is performed. Firstly, the control techniques are evaluated in terms of the related impact on some specific key performance indicators, with special emphasis on ultimate loads and maximum blade deflection. Secondarily, an optimal blade redesign process is performed with the goal of quantifying the modification in the structure of the blade entailed by a possible increase in ultimate values due to the presence of wind farm control. Such an analysis provides for an important piece of information for assessing the impact of the farm control on the cost-of-energy model.

    Abstract. The importance of a high-order statistical feature of wind, which is neglected in common wind models, is investigated: non-Gaussian distributed wind velocity increments related to the intermittency of turbulence and their impact on wind turbine dynamics and fatigue loads are the focus. Gaussian and non-Gaussian synthetic wind fields obtained from a continuous-time random walk model are compared and fed to a common aero-servo-elastic model of a wind turbine employing blade element momentum (BEM) aerodynamics. It is discussed why and how the effect of the non-Gaussian increment statistics has to be isolated. This is achieved by assuring that both types feature equivalent probability density functions, spectral properties and coherence, which makes them indistinguishable based on wind characterizations of common design guidelines. Due to limitations in the wind field genesis, idealized spatial correlations are considered. Three examples with idealized; differently sized wind structures are presented. A comparison between the resulting wind turbine loads is made. For the largest wind structure sizes, differences in the fatigue loads between intermittent and Gaussian are observed. These are potentially relevant in a wind turbine certification context. Subsequently, the dependency of this intermittency effect on the field's spatial variation is discussed. Towards very small structured fields, the effect vanishes.

    Abstract. The outlined analysis validates the dynamic wake meandering (DWM) model based on loads and power production measured at an onshore wind farm with small turbine distances. Special focus is given to the performance of a version of the DWM model that was previously recalibrated at the site. The recalibration is based on measurements from a turbine nacelle-mounted lidar system. The different versions of the DWM model are compared to the commonly used Frandsen wake-added turbulence model. The results of the recalibrated wake model agree very well with the measurements, whereas the Frandsen model overestimates the loads drastically for short turbine distances. Furthermore, lidar measurements of the wind speed deficit as well as the wake meandering are incorporated in the DWM model definition in order to decrease the uncertainties.

    Abstract. In order to identify holistically better drivetrain concepts for onshore application, their operational behaviour needs to be considered at an early design phase. In this paper, a validated approach for estimating drivetrain concept-specific risk of unplanned maintenance based on open access data is presented. Uncertain influencing factors are described with distribution functions. This way, the poor data availability in the early design phase can be used to give an indication about the concept’s choice influence on the unplanned operational turbine behaviour. In order to get representative comparisons, Monte Carlo method is applied. This makes it possible to model the life of a fictional wind turbine based on the derived distributions. Technical availability and drivetrain influenced unplanned maintenance effort are defined as evaluation criteria. The latter is constituted by labour, material, and equipment expenses. By calculating the range of fluctuation of the evaluation criteria mean values, this approach offers an indication about the inherent risk in the operational phase induced by the drivetrain concept choice. This approach shows that open access data or expert estimations are sufficient for comparing different drivetrain concepts over the operational phase in an early design stage. The approach is applied on the five most common state-of-the-art drivetrain concepts. The comparison shows that the drivetrain concept without a gearbox and with a permanent magnet synchronous generator performs the best in terms of absolute unplanned maintenance effort over the lifetime as well as on the inherent risk. For future research, the influence of the maintenance strategy as well as site and park specific impacts on the unplanned concept behaviour should be included. For adapting this method to new concepts, a physically based approach could be developed which would make it possible to estimate probability distributions for the uncertain factors. Nevertheless, this approach will help to identify holistically better drivetrain concepts by being able to estimate the inherent risks in the operational phase.

    Abstract. In the present work, a consistent method for calculating the lift and drag forces from the 2-D airfoil data for the dihedral or coned horizontal-axis wind turbines when using generalized lifting-line methods is described. The generalized lifting-line methods refer to the models that discretize the blade radially into sections and use 2-D airfoil data, for example, lifting-line (LL), actuator line (AL), blade element momentum (BEM) and blade element vortex cylinder (BEVC) methods. A consistent interpretation of classic unsteady 2-D thin airfoil theory results reveals that it is necessary to use both the relative flow information at one point on the chord and the chordwise gradient of the flow direction to correctly determine the 2-D aerodynamic force and moment. Equivalently, the magnitude of the force should be determined by the flow at the three-quarter-chord point, while the force direction should be determined by the flow at the quarter-chord point. However, this aspect is generally overlooked, and most implementations in generalized lifting-line methods use only the flow information at one calculation point per section for simplicity. This simplification will not change the performance prediction of planar rotors but will cause an error when applied to non-planar rotors. In this work this effect is investigated using the special case, where the wind turbine blade has only out-of-plane shapes (blade dihedral) and no in-plane shapes (blade sweep), operating under steady-state conditions with uniform inflow applied perpendicular to the rotor plane. The impact of the effect is investigated by comparing the predictions of the steady-state performance of non-planar rotors from the consistent approach of the LL method with the simplified one-point approaches. The results are verified using blade-geometry-resolving Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations. The numerical investigations confirmed that the full method complying with the thin airfoil theory is necessary to correctly determine the magnitude and direction of the sectional aerodynamic forces for non-planar rotors. The aerodynamic loads of upwind- and downwind-coned blades that are calculated using the LL method, the BEM method, the BEVC method and the AL method are compared for the simplified and the full method. Results using the full method, including different specific implementation schemes, are shown to agree significantly better with fully resolved RANS than the often used simplified one-point approaches.
