Once previous industrial activity has ceased, brownfields are found in urban and suburban environments and managed in different ways ranging from being left untouched to total reconversion. These situations apply to large surface areas often impacted by residual diffuse pollution. Though significant and preventing any sensitive use, residual contamination does not necessarily require treatment. Moreover, conventional treatments show their technical and economic limits in these situations and gentle remediation options such as phytomanagement might appear more relevant to the management of those sites. Thus, these sites face up two major issues: managing moderate contamination levels and providing an alternative use of economic interest. This work proposes to assess a management strategy associating the phytoremediation of organic pollution along with the production of biomass for energy generation production. A 16-week controlled growth experiment was conducted on a soil substrate moderately impacted by multiple pollution (trace elements, mainly Zn and Pb, and hydrocarbons), by associating rhizodegradation with Medicago sativa or biomass production with Robinia pseudoacacia or Alnus incana in monocultures. The effect of a microbial inoculum amendment on the performances of these treatments was also evaluated. Results showed total hydrocarbons (TH), and to a lesser extent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), concentrations decreased over time, whatever the plant cover. Good biomass production yields were achieved for both tree species in comparison with the control sample, even though R. pseudoacacia seemed to perform better. Furthermore, the quality of the biomass produced was in conformity with the thresholds set by the legislation concerning its use as a renewable energy source.

AbstractMid‐infrared lasers have important applications in infrared countermeasures, sensing, environmental monitoring, biomedicine, and many military and civilian fields. In this work, an intense emission at 2.9 μm from Yb3+/Ho3+ co‐doped TeO2‐Ga2O3‐ZnO (TGZ) glass was reported. The 2 μm, 1.2 μm and visible emissions were also performed to understand the competitive luminescent mechanism. With the increase in Yb3+ concentration, all the emissions of Ho3+ increased, whereas the emission of Yb3+ decreased due to the phonon‐assisted energy transfer from Yb3+ to Ho3+. The lifetimes of optimized 3 mol% Yb2O3 and 1 mol% Ho2O3 co‐doped TGZ glass, which has the maximum emission intensity, are 548 μs and 1.7 ms at 2.9 and 2 μm, respectively. The Judd–Ofelt intensity parameters, absorption, and emission cross sections were calculated to evaluate the mid‐infrared fluorescence properties of this new glass matrix material. The gain coefficients show that the 2 and 2.9 μm laser gain can be realized by small pump energy, indicating that this glass is a promising medium for the mid‐infrared optical fiber laser.

AbstractShifting from a linear to a circular bio‐economy requires new business models. The objective was getting insights into the uncharted research field of business model innovation for a circular and sustainable bio‐economy within the agrifood sector. Eight European cases valorising agricultural waste and by‐products by closing loops or cascading were studied regarding their innovation drivers and elements, via interviews, on‐site visits and secondary data. In this domain, the findings highlight that business model innovations are depending on the (i) macro‐environmental institutional‐legal conditions and market trends, (ii) driven by internal economic, environmental and/or social objectives, but especially strongly linked to (iii) other actors often from different sectors seeking synergies and (iv) value co‐creation via combined organisational and technological innovations. Business models for a circular bio‐economy thus depend on various action levels and need radical combined organisational and technological innovations for a most efficient usage of agricultural waste and by‐products. This also means new business configurations instead of linear innovation strategies currently still being dominant due to economic viability.

However, the injection of hydrogen could impact gas security since gas composition fundamentally changes, adversely effecting the combustion, safety and lifespan of appliances. This paper develops a new gas security management scheme for hydrogen injection into natural gas systems produced from excessive wind power. It introduces four gas security indices for the integrated electricity and gas system (IEGS) measuring gas security, considering the coordinated operation of tightly coupled infrastructures. To maintain gas security under an acceptable range, the gas mixture of nitrogen and liquid petroleum gas with hydrogen is adopted to address the gas security violation caused by hydrogen injection. A distributionally robust optimization (DRO) modelled by Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence-based ambiguity set is applied to flexibly control the robustness to capture wind uncertainty. The KL divergence-based ambiguity set defines uncertainties within a measured space which limits the shape of probability distributions. Case studies illustrate that wind power is maximally utilized and gas mixture is effectively managed, thus improving gas security and performance of IEGS. This work can bring many benefits: i) ensured gas security under hydrogen injection ii) low system operation cost and iii) high renewable energy penetration. It can be easily extended to manage injections of other green gases into IEGS.

However, the injection of hydrogen could impact gas security since gas composition fundamentally changes, adversely effecting the combustion, safety and lifespan of appliances. This paper develops a new gas security management scheme for hydrogen injection into natural gas systems produced from excessive wind power. It introduces four gas security indices for the integrated electricity and gas system (IEGS) measuring gas security, considering the coordinated operation of tightly coupled infrastructures. To maintain gas security under an acceptable range, the gas mixture of nitrogen and liquid petroleum gas with hydrogen is adopted to address the gas security violation caused by hydrogen injection. A distributionally robust optimization (DRO) modelled by Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence-based ambiguity set is applied to flexibly control the robustness to capture wind uncertainty. The KL divergence-based ambiguity set defines uncertainties within a measured space which limits the shape of probability distributions. Case studies illustrate that wind power is maximally utilized and gas mixture is effectively managed, thus improving gas security and performance of IEGS. This work can bring many benefits: i) ensured gas security under hydrogen injection ii) low system operation cost and iii) high renewable energy penetration. It can be easily extended to manage injections of other green gases into IEGS.

Flux driven fluid simulations are run on analytical magnetic equilibria generated with positive and negative triangularity δ in a bottom limiter configuration. The conservation of the energy is assured by the increase of the bottom limiter radial position from δ>0to δ<0. Changing the triangularity impacts both the plasma equilibrium and the turbulence. In particular, negative triangularity leads to a reduction of the density and electron temperature decay lengths in agreement with the literature. Concerning the turbulence, in all the simulations, it remains ballooned with an enhanced level of fluctuations at low field side in comparison to the high field one. Moreover, no clear trend is visible on the relative level of fluctuations of both density and electron temperature in the CFR whereas an enhancement (resp. reduction) is visible in the scrape-off layer at the low field side midplane for the negative (resp. positive) triangularity simulations. This behaviour differs from TCV and DIII-D measurements which show the benefit of negative triangularity in terms of turbulence reduction and increased confinement. However, no conclusion is drawn from our preliminary study concerning the impact of triangularity on the turbulent transport. Change in triangularity impacts many simulation control parameters, as in the experiments, and that the analysis of its impact alone on the dynamics of the plasma is not obvious in this configuration.

Abstract Climate change is projected to increase the aridity of semi-arid ecosystems, including Mongolian grasslands (MG), which provide ecosystem services that support food supply and pastoralist lifestyle. Here, we conducted a grid-scale (0.5° × 0.5°) probabilistic risk assessment of MG under climate change for 40 years (1976–2015) based on probability theory. We evaluated changes of risk (impacts) and vulnerability of MG to drought between the recent two decades R20 = 1996–2015 and the previous two decades P20 = 1976–1995. The risk is quantified as the product of the probability of hazardous drought and ecosystem vulnerability. The probability of hazardous drought is defined from the Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index. Vulnerability is defined as the expected differences of key ecosystem variables between years with and without hazardous conditions. The ecosystem variables are productivity (peak aboveground biomass, net primary productivity, and leaf area index) and root-zone plant-available soil moisture, simulated with a process-based vegetation model Organizing Carbon and Hydrology in Dynamic Ecosystems-Grassland Management validated with field observations of biomass and soil moisture. Results reveal that MG experienced more frequent hazardous droughts with rapid warming and slight drying during R20 aggravated by ever-increasing grazing intensity (34% compared to P20), which resulted in a reduction in soil water availability and grassland productivity, particularly in northeastern areas (20%–65%). The risk of drought to productivity increased by 10% between P20 and R20 over extended areas, particularly in northcentral and northeast Mongolia. The increase in the risk to MG was mainly caused by climate change-induced increase in the probability of hazardous drought and, to a lesser extent, by the increasing vulnerability. Recent droughts modify the risk to grasslands, particularly in northcentral and northeast Mongolia, suggesting that these regions need strategic management for both adaptation and ecosystem conservation to cope with climate change impacts.

This paper, focusing on wind and tidal energy, discusses how the implementation of MRE converters influences biodiversity, and vice versa, through biofouling and reef effects. The understanding of these interactions requires the knowledge of the hydro-sedimentary conditions and the macrofauna. The research on these topics, performed at the Continental and Coastal Morphodynamic laboratory (M2C) (UNICAEN, France), is presented through a multi-disciplinary approach by i) studying the hydrodynamic conditions and the macrofauna in Alderney Race, ii) studying the biofouling effects on tidal turbines and their influence on the turbulent wake, iii) assessing the hydro-sedimentary impacts induced by the offshore wind farm, like scouring, and iv) taking an ecosystem approach on MRE, such as the reef effect. From an ecological perspective, the reef effect can be responsible for changes in the structure and function of the ecosystem. Although several studies have analyzed this effect at the species-or community-scale, the propagation of the reef effect at the ecosystem-scale remains unclear. Thus, understanding these ecosystem-scale effects is urgent for future research. From an engineering perspective, biofouling changes the structural characteristics (i.e., supplementary mass) of the converters and thus, affects their performance.

This paper, focusing on wind and tidal energy, discusses how the implementation of MRE converters influences biodiversity, and vice versa, through biofouling and reef effects. The understanding of these interactions requires the knowledge of the hydro-sedimentary conditions and the macrofauna. The research on these topics, performed at the Continental and Coastal Morphodynamic laboratory (M2C) (UNICAEN, France), is presented through a multi-disciplinary approach by i) studying the hydrodynamic conditions and the macrofauna in Alderney Race, ii) studying the biofouling effects on tidal turbines and their influence on the turbulent wake, iii) assessing the hydro-sedimentary impacts induced by the offshore wind farm, like scouring, and iv) taking an ecosystem approach on MRE, such as the reef effect. From an ecological perspective, the reef effect can be responsible for changes in the structure and function of the ecosystem. Although several studies have analyzed this effect at the species-or community-scale, the propagation of the reef effect at the ecosystem-scale remains unclear. Thus, understanding these ecosystem-scale effects is urgent for future research. From an engineering perspective, biofouling changes the structural characteristics (i.e., supplementary mass) of the converters and thus, affects their performance.

The full-scale application of wet-chemical techniques has proven their technical feasibility for P recovery from sludge-derived ash. HTL for sludge treatment has received significant attention for producing biocrude with net-positive energy recovery. P recovery from the solid by-product of sludge HTL, hydrochar, is a critical step in holistic sustainable sludge management. This review aims to guide P recovery from sludge-derived ash and hydrochar by presenting recent advances in wet-chemical extraction and precipitation. Notably, previous research suggests that climate change threats can cause people to display ethnocentric reaction to preserve the ingroup’s interests. In this research, we investigate the relation between collective narcissism and attitudes towards climate science. We argue that national collective narcissism is negatively associated with the acceptance of climate science. We further hypothesized that this relation might be mediated by conspiracy beliefs about climate change, because narcissistic identifiers are prone to hold conspiracy beliefs. In a pilot Study (N = 409), we found that national collective narcissism was significantly associated with climate change conspiracy beliefs. In Study 1 (N = 295), climate change conspiracy beliefs mediated the negative relation between national collective narcissism and acceptance of climate science. In Study 2 (N = 375), this mediation was replicated when controlling for other forms of climate skepticism. Lastly, general conspiracy mentality did not mediate this relation, which emphasizes the importance of considering the specificity of climate change conspiracy theories (rather than generic propensity to believe in conspiracy theories) in understanding distrust toward climate science.

This paper analyses the potential utilization of wind electric pumping for water distribution in off-grid locations of the North Region of Cameroon (NRoC), using ground measured data as well as long-term satellite-derived data. Furthermore, this paper puts emphasis on statistical indexes of accuracy for the comparison of measured (2007–2012) and long-term satellite-derived (2005–2020) data. The outcome of this study clearly indicates that long-term satellite-derived data, obtained through the Prediction of Worldwide Renewable Energy Resources, can be considered as a viable alternative to missing site-specific data from ground stations, mainly in developing countries. The accuracy of satellite-based wind resource is deemed sufficient to provide a reasonable assessment in the initial phase of wind project planning, before in situ measurements with high accuracy are available. To model wind speeds characteristics, the energy pattern factor method (EPF) has been utilized as one of the reliable Weibull distribution methods for the assessment of wind energy potential at desired turbines heights in the selected locations. Five 20-kW pitch-controlled wind turbines (WT) with a hub height of 30 m, are considered to evaluate the power output and energy produced. Volumetric flow rates and costs of water produced are estimated. The results showed that, out of the eight chosen locations, Figuil shows the best combination of capacity factors (CF) and costs of energy (COE), while the site of Poli displays the worst values of CF and COE, no matter which of the five WT is employed. Thus, selecting WT for low wind speeds regimes, should require to combine location wind resource and WT characteristics such as lower cut-in wind speed (1.5 m/s) as well as lower rated wind speed (8.0 m/s) in order to successfully and affordably implement the wind technology in the NRoC.

Once previous industrial activity has ceased, brownfields are found in urban and suburban environments and managed in different ways ranging from being left untouched to total reconversion. These situations apply to large surface areas often impacted by residual diffuse pollution. Though significant and preventing any sensitive use, residual contamination does not necessarily require treatment. Moreover, conventional treatments show their technical and economic limits in these situations and gentle remediation options such as phytomanagement might appear more relevant to the management of those sites. Thus, these sites face up two major issues: managing moderate contamination levels and providing an alternative use of economic interest. This work proposes to assess a management strategy associating the phytoremediation of organic pollution along with the production of biomass for energy generation production. A 16-week controlled growth experiment was conducted on a soil substrate moderately impacted by multiple pollution (trace elements, mainly Zn and Pb, and hydrocarbons), by associating rhizodegradation with Medicago sativa or biomass production with Robinia pseudoacacia or Alnus incana in monocultures. The effect of a microbial inoculum amendment on the performances of these treatments was also evaluated. Results showed total hydrocarbons (TH), and to a lesser extent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), concentrations decreased over time, whatever the plant cover. Good biomass production yields were achieved for both tree species in comparison with the control sample, even though R. pseudoacacia seemed to perform better. Furthermore, the quality of the biomass produced was in conformity with the thresholds set by the legislation concerning its use as a renewable energy source.

AbstractMid‐infrared lasers have important applications in infrared countermeasures, sensing, environmental monitoring, biomedicine, and many military and civilian fields. In this work, an intense emission at 2.9 μm from Yb3+/Ho3+ co‐doped TeO2‐Ga2O3‐ZnO (TGZ) glass was reported. The 2 μm, 1.2 μm and visible emissions were also performed to understand the competitive luminescent mechanism. With the increase in Yb3+ concentration, all the emissions of Ho3+ increased, whereas the emission of Yb3+ decreased due to the phonon‐assisted energy transfer from Yb3+ to Ho3+. The lifetimes of optimized 3 mol% Yb2O3 and 1 mol% Ho2O3 co‐doped TGZ glass, which has the maximum emission intensity, are 548 μs and 1.7 ms at 2.9 and 2 μm, respectively. The Judd–Ofelt intensity parameters, absorption, and emission cross sections were calculated to evaluate the mid‐infrared fluorescence properties of this new glass matrix material. The gain coefficients show that the 2 and 2.9 μm laser gain can be realized by small pump energy, indicating that this glass is a promising medium for the mid‐infrared optical fiber laser.

AbstractShifting from a linear to a circular bio‐economy requires new business models. The objective was getting insights into the uncharted research field of business model innovation for a circular and sustainable bio‐economy within the agrifood sector. Eight European cases valorising agricultural waste and by‐products by closing loops or cascading were studied regarding their innovation drivers and elements, via interviews, on‐site visits and secondary data. In this domain, the findings highlight that business model innovations are depending on the (i) macro‐environmental institutional‐legal conditions and market trends, (ii) driven by internal economic, environmental and/or social objectives, but especially strongly linked to (iii) other actors often from different sectors seeking synergies and (iv) value co‐creation via combined organisational and technological innovations. Business models for a circular bio‐economy thus depend on various action levels and need radical combined organisational and technological innovations for a most efficient usage of agricultural waste and by‐products. This also means new business configurations instead of linear innovation strategies currently still being dominant due to economic viability.

However, the injection of hydrogen could impact gas security since gas composition fundamentally changes, adversely effecting the combustion, safety and lifespan of appliances. This paper develops a new gas security management scheme for hydrogen injection into natural gas systems produced from excessive wind power. It introduces four gas security indices for the integrated electricity and gas system (IEGS) measuring gas security, considering the coordinated operation of tightly coupled infrastructures. To maintain gas security under an acceptable range, the gas mixture of nitrogen and liquid petroleum gas with hydrogen is adopted to address the gas security violation caused by hydrogen injection. A distributionally robust optimization (DRO) modelled by Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence-based ambiguity set is applied to flexibly control the robustness to capture wind uncertainty. The KL divergence-based ambiguity set defines uncertainties within a measured space which limits the shape of probability distributions. Case studies illustrate that wind power is maximally utilized and gas mixture is effectively managed, thus improving gas security and performance of IEGS. This work can bring many benefits: i) ensured gas security under hydrogen injection ii) low system operation cost and iii) high renewable energy penetration. It can be easily extended to manage injections of other green gases into IEGS.

However, the injection of hydrogen could impact gas security since gas composition fundamentally changes, adversely effecting the combustion, safety and lifespan of appliances. This paper develops a new gas security management scheme for hydrogen injection into natural gas systems produced from excessive wind power. It introduces four gas security indices for the integrated electricity and gas system (IEGS) measuring gas security, considering the coordinated operation of tightly coupled infrastructures. To maintain gas security under an acceptable range, the gas mixture of nitrogen and liquid petroleum gas with hydrogen is adopted to address the gas security violation caused by hydrogen injection. A distributionally robust optimization (DRO) modelled by Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence-based ambiguity set is applied to flexibly control the robustness to capture wind uncertainty. The KL divergence-based ambiguity set defines uncertainties within a measured space which limits the shape of probability distributions. Case studies illustrate that wind power is maximally utilized and gas mixture is effectively managed, thus improving gas security and performance of IEGS. This work can bring many benefits: i) ensured gas security under hydrogen injection ii) low system operation cost and iii) high renewable energy penetration. It can be easily extended to manage injections of other green gases into IEGS.

Flux driven fluid simulations are run on analytical magnetic equilibria generated with positive and negative triangularity δ in a bottom limiter configuration. The conservation of the energy is assured by the increase of the bottom limiter radial position from δ>0to δ<0. Changing the triangularity impacts both the plasma equilibrium and the turbulence. In particular, negative triangularity leads to a reduction of the density and electron temperature decay lengths in agreement with the literature. Concerning the turbulence, in all the simulations, it remains ballooned with an enhanced level of fluctuations at low field side in comparison to the high field one. Moreover, no clear trend is visible on the relative level of fluctuations of both density and electron temperature in the CFR whereas an enhancement (resp. reduction) is visible in the scrape-off layer at the low field side midplane for the negative (resp. positive) triangularity simulations. This behaviour differs from TCV and DIII-D measurements which show the benefit of negative triangularity in terms of turbulence reduction and increased confinement. However, no conclusion is drawn from our preliminary study concerning the impact of triangularity on the turbulent transport. Change in triangularity impacts many simulation control parameters, as in the experiments, and that the analysis of its impact alone on the dynamics of the plasma is not obvious in this configuration.

Abstract Climate change is projected to increase the aridity of semi-arid ecosystems, including Mongolian grasslands (MG), which provide ecosystem services that support food supply and pastoralist lifestyle. Here, we conducted a grid-scale (0.5° × 0.5°) probabilistic risk assessment of MG under climate change for 40 years (1976–2015) based on probability theory. We evaluated changes of risk (impacts) and vulnerability of MG to drought between the recent two decades R20 = 1996–2015 and the previous two decades P20 = 1976–1995. The risk is quantified as the product of the probability of hazardous drought and ecosystem vulnerability. The probability of hazardous drought is defined from the Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index. Vulnerability is defined as the expected differences of key ecosystem variables between years with and without hazardous conditions. The ecosystem variables are productivity (peak aboveground biomass, net primary productivity, and leaf area index) and root-zone plant-available soil moisture, simulated with a process-based vegetation model Organizing Carbon and Hydrology in Dynamic Ecosystems-Grassland Management validated with field observations of biomass and soil moisture. Results reveal that MG experienced more frequent hazardous droughts with rapid warming and slight drying during R20 aggravated by ever-increasing grazing intensity (34% compared to P20), which resulted in a reduction in soil water availability and grassland productivity, particularly in northeastern areas (20%–65%). The risk of drought to productivity increased by 10% between P20 and R20 over extended areas, particularly in northcentral and northeast Mongolia. The increase in the risk to MG was mainly caused by climate change-induced increase in the probability of hazardous drought and, to a lesser extent, by the increasing vulnerability. Recent droughts modify the risk to grasslands, particularly in northcentral and northeast Mongolia, suggesting that these regions need strategic management for both adaptation and ecosystem conservation to cope with climate change impacts.

This paper, focusing on wind and tidal energy, discusses how the implementation of MRE converters influences biodiversity, and vice versa, through biofouling and reef effects. The understanding of these interactions requires the knowledge of the hydro-sedimentary conditions and the macrofauna. The research on these topics, performed at the Continental and Coastal Morphodynamic laboratory (M2C) (UNICAEN, France), is presented through a multi-disciplinary approach by i) studying the hydrodynamic conditions and the macrofauna in Alderney Race, ii) studying the biofouling effects on tidal turbines and their influence on the turbulent wake, iii) assessing the hydro-sedimentary impacts induced by the offshore wind farm, like scouring, and iv) taking an ecosystem approach on MRE, such as the reef effect. From an ecological perspective, the reef effect can be responsible for changes in the structure and function of the ecosystem. Although several studies have analyzed this effect at the species-or community-scale, the propagation of the reef effect at the ecosystem-scale remains unclear. Thus, understanding these ecosystem-scale effects is urgent for future research. From an engineering perspective, biofouling changes the structural characteristics (i.e., supplementary mass) of the converters and thus, affects their performance.

This paper, focusing on wind and tidal energy, discusses how the implementation of MRE converters influences biodiversity, and vice versa, through biofouling and reef effects. The understanding of these interactions requires the knowledge of the hydro-sedimentary conditions and the macrofauna. The research on these topics, performed at the Continental and Coastal Morphodynamic laboratory (M2C) (UNICAEN, France), is presented through a multi-disciplinary approach by i) studying the hydrodynamic conditions and the macrofauna in Alderney Race, ii) studying the biofouling effects on tidal turbines and their influence on the turbulent wake, iii) assessing the hydro-sedimentary impacts induced by the offshore wind farm, like scouring, and iv) taking an ecosystem approach on MRE, such as the reef effect. From an ecological perspective, the reef effect can be responsible for changes in the structure and function of the ecosystem. Although several studies have analyzed this effect at the species-or community-scale, the propagation of the reef effect at the ecosystem-scale remains unclear. Thus, understanding these ecosystem-scale effects is urgent for future research. From an engineering perspective, biofouling changes the structural characteristics (i.e., supplementary mass) of the converters and thus, affects their performance.

The full-scale application of wet-chemical techniques has proven their technical feasibility for P recovery from sludge-derived ash. HTL for sludge treatment has received significant attention for producing biocrude with net-positive energy recovery. P recovery from the solid by-product of sludge HTL, hydrochar, is a critical step in holistic sustainable sludge management. This review aims to guide P recovery from sludge-derived ash and hydrochar by presenting recent advances in wet-chemical extraction and precipitation. Notably, previous research suggests that climate change threats can cause people to display ethnocentric reaction to preserve the ingroup’s interests. In this research, we investigate the relation between collective narcissism and attitudes towards climate science. We argue that national collective narcissism is negatively associated with the acceptance of climate science. We further hypothesized that this relation might be mediated by conspiracy beliefs about climate change, because narcissistic identifiers are prone to hold conspiracy beliefs. In a pilot Study (N = 409), we found that national collective narcissism was significantly associated with climate change conspiracy beliefs. In Study 1 (N = 295), climate change conspiracy beliefs mediated the negative relation between national collective narcissism and acceptance of climate science. In Study 2 (N = 375), this mediation was replicated when controlling for other forms of climate skepticism. Lastly, general conspiracy mentality did not mediate this relation, which emphasizes the importance of considering the specificity of climate change conspiracy theories (rather than generic propensity to believe in conspiracy theories) in understanding distrust toward climate science.

This paper analyses the potential utilization of wind electric pumping for water distribution in off-grid locations of the North Region of Cameroon (NRoC), using ground measured data as well as long-term satellite-derived data. Furthermore, this paper puts emphasis on statistical indexes of accuracy for the comparison of measured (2007–2012) and long-term satellite-derived (2005–2020) data. The outcome of this study clearly indicates that long-term satellite-derived data, obtained through the Prediction of Worldwide Renewable Energy Resources, can be considered as a viable alternative to missing site-specific data from ground stations, mainly in developing countries. The accuracy of satellite-based wind resource is deemed sufficient to provide a reasonable assessment in the initial phase of wind project planning, before in situ measurements with high accuracy are available. To model wind speeds characteristics, the energy pattern factor method (EPF) has been utilized as one of the reliable Weibull distribution methods for the assessment of wind energy potential at desired turbines heights in the selected locations. Five 20-kW pitch-controlled wind turbines (WT) with a hub height of 30 m, are considered to evaluate the power output and energy produced. Volumetric flow rates and costs of water produced are estimated. The results showed that, out of the eight chosen locations, Figuil shows the best combination of capacity factors (CF) and costs of energy (COE), while the site of Poli displays the worst values of CF and COE, no matter which of the five WT is employed. Thus, selecting WT for low wind speeds regimes, should require to combine location wind resource and WT characteristics such as lower cut-in wind speed (1.5 m/s) as well as lower rated wind speed (8.0 m/s) in order to successfully and affordably implement the wind technology in the NRoC.
