    In July 2010, the LISS Immigrant panel was presented a questionnaire to measure the ecological footprint of the respondent. The questionnaire calculates the ecological footprint by taking account of the space, resources and energy people use in relation to the biocapacity of the earth.More information on this Ecological Footprint measure by Prof. W.     (English: see further below) Systeemschema van de standplaats: hoe milieudrukken de vegetatie via standplaatskenmerken beïnvloeden Het systeemschema van de standplaats is een visualisatietool en een databank over relaties tussen vegetatie, standplaatsfactoren en milieudrukken. Centraal staat welke standplaatsfactoren in welke milieucompartimenten (atmosfeer, bodem, waterbodem, grondwater, inundatiewater, oppervlaktewaterkolom) rechtstreeks of onrechtstreeks relevant zijn voor vegetatie. Deze tool biedt een schematische voorstelling van de milieucompartimenten met, voor de meeste milieudrukken die de Europees beschermde habitattypes in Vlaanderen aantasten: de standplaatsfactoren waarop de milieudruk rechtstreeks resp. onrechtstreeks doorwerkt; de richting waarin deze standplaatsfactoren onder de milieudruk evolueren; het milieucompartiment dat het eerst wordt beïnvloed. Het systeemschema van de standplaats werd uitgewerkt voor de milieudrukken die behoren tot de volgende klassen: ruimtebeslag (incl. bodemcompactie, verharding, herprofilering, grondverzet en veranderingen in bodemdynamiek) eutrofiëring verzuring wijziging van de grondwaterstand wijziging hydrologie via oppervlaktewater (incl. veranderingen in overstromingsduur of -frequentie, in stroomsnelheid, in waterpeil en in golfslagwerking) verzoeting en verzilting verontreiniging klimaatverandering (incl. zeespiegelstijging) De relaties, geïllustreerd in het systeemschema van de standplaats, zijn gebaseerd op gevestigde kennis (uit literatuur) over de ecologie van verschillende ecosystemen, gaande van droge tot aquatische milieus. Het systeemschema van de standplaats kan o.a. worden gebruikt om tot een wetenschappelijk onderbouwde selectie van standplaatsfactoren te komen. The Site System Scheme is a visualization tool and a database about relationships between vegetation, site factors and environmental pressures. Its core indicates which site factors in which environmental compartments (atmosphere, soil, subaqueous soil, groundwater, inundation water, surface water column) are directly or indirectly relevant to vegetation. This tool provides a schematic representation of the environmental compartments and shows, for the main environmental pressures that affect the European protected habitat types in Flanders: which site factors are directly resp. indirectly influenced by the environmental pressure; in which direction these site factors evolve under the environmental pressure; which environmental compartment is affected first. The Site System Scheme has been developed for the environmental pressures belonging to the following classes: physical modification (incl. soil compaction, infrastructure, reprofiling, soil transport and changes in soil dynamics) eutrophication acidification change of groundwater level change of surface water hydrology (incl changes in flood duration or frequency, in surface water velocity, in water level and changes of wave impact) desalination and salinization pollution climate change (incl. sea level rise) The relationships illustrated in the Site System Scheme are based on established knowledge (from literature) about the ecology of different ecosystems ranging from dry to aquatic environments. The Site System Scheme can a.o. be used to obtain a well-informed selection of site factors.     This study focuses on the production of dry peat fuel in the northern parts of the Netherlands between 1550 and 1950. Peat digging played an important role there because in the course of four hundred years around 100,000 hectare raised bog peat and 42,000 hectare fenland peat was converted to dry peat fuel, representing a combustion value of 3.5 x 109 gigajoules. This peat was excavated from 62 raised bog areas and 11 fenland areas. An assessment is made of the importance of these various peat-bogs and fenlands, both with regard to each other and to the total picture. It also enables the categorisation into periods. Above all, in this way the contribution made by the peat digging in the northern Netherlands to the national energy supply is researched. To a lesser extent attention is paid to the distribution of dry peat fuel and its consumption.

    In the transition towards a low-carbon society, the application of district heating systems is reconsidered. The new interest entails a lot of questions about district heating design and performance, especially in combination with contemporary dwellings that have a reduced space heating demand. This study presents the simulation results that support the design and performance assessment of a district heating system for a carbon neutral neighbourhood in Kortrijk, within the framework of the European demonstration project ECO-Life.

The Site System Scheme is a visualization tool and a database about relationships between vegetation, site factors and environmental pressures. Its core indicates which site factors in which environmental compartments (atmosphere, soil, subaqueous soil, groundwater, inundation water, surface water column) are directly or indirectly relevant to vegetation. This tool provides a schematic representation of the environmental compartments and shows, for the main environmental pressures that affect the European protected habitat types in Flanders: which site factors are directly resp. indirectly influenced by the environmental pressure; in which direction these site factors evolve under the environmental pressure; which environmental compartment is affected first. The Site System Scheme has been developed for the environmental pressures belonging to the following classes: physical modification (incl. soil compaction, infrastructure, reprofiling, soil transport and changes in soil dynamics) eutrophication acidification change of groundwater level change of surface water hydrology (incl changes in flood duration or frequency, in surface water velocity, in water level and changes of wave impact) desalination and salinization pollution climate change (incl. sea level rise) The relationships illustrated in the Site System Scheme are based on established knowledge (from literature) about the ecology of different ecosystems ranging from dry to aquatic environments. The Site System Scheme can a.o. be used to obtain a well-informed selection of site factors.     This study focuses on the production of dry peat fuel in the northern parts of the Netherlands between 1550 and 1950. Peat digging played an important role there because in the course of four hundred years around 100,000 hectare raised bog peat and 42,000 hectare fenland peat was converted to dry peat fuel, representing a combustion value of 3.5 x 109 gigajoules. This peat was excavated from 62 raised bog areas and 11 fenland areas. An assessment is made of the importance of these various peat-bogs and fenlands, both with regard to each other and to the total picture. It also enables the categorisation into periods. Above all, in this way the contribution made by the peat digging in the northern Netherlands to the national energy supply is researched. To a lesser extent attention is paid to the distribution of dry peat fuel and its consumption.

    In the transition towards a low-carbon society, the application of district heating systems is reconsidered. The new interest entails a lot of questions about district heating design and performance, especially in combination with contemporary dwellings that have a reduced space heating demand. This study presents the simulation results that support the design and performance assessment of a district heating system for a carbon neutral neighbourhood in Kortrijk, within the framework of the European demonstration project ECO-Life.
