description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2021Publisher:Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie Authors: Kátia Cyrlene de Araujo Vasconcelos; Annor da Silva Junior;Purpose: The objective of this study is to understand how the learning process of sustainability occurs within the context of the harvesting practices of a forest-based company. Originality/value: The study contributes to understanding the learning process of sustainability under the approach of practice when demonstrating how the knowledge of sustainability is created and reproduced from the practices established by a group. In practical terms, the narrative of the flow of knowing and learning has the potential of assisting managers and educators to structure more integrative corporate education projects, in which the initiatives are integrated into the practices of the occupational communities. Design/methodology/approach: This is a qualitative research of descriptive nature, through a single-case study in a forest harvesting operation in a Brazilian company that has sustainability at the core of its business strategy. It was adopted as collection instruments the in-depth observation, the semi-structured interview, and the documental research, which were analyzed through the thematic analysis of narratives. Findings: The results suggest that, in the given context, the learning process of sustainability happens in a combination of the processes of creation and dissemination of knowledge conducted by the company and the practices developed within the occupational communities. There are indications that, in a social construction process, new working models are learned, based on an entanglement of planning, safety, and discursive practices, activating the knowledge-in-practice of sustainability.

Renewable energies allow us to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, a suitable methodology for the conversion of wet biomass into fuels was established by using the hydrothermal carbonization process (HTC). The hydrocarbons obtained in the HTC process show better fuel properties compared to those of the raw biomasses during gasification. The use of modeling and process simulations allowed us to determine the optimum conditions for converting biomass moisture into energy. Furthermore, the simulation results show that the HTC process is economically feasible for producing hydrocarbons as pellets and could compete with bulk pine pellets.

This report is a policy briefing containing the main findings of the PhD project Co-Creation of Sustainability-Oriented Innovations (SOIs) in Tourism. This project was conducted in close partnership with the Barcelona City Council to co-design institutional innovations to address sustainability challenges in the city by widely engaging stakeholders in a participatory process. To enable an open participatory process, the project was nested in the Consell de Turisme i Ciutat, which gathers key public, private and civil society organizations to discuss the main tourism development issues in the city of Barcelona. The project gathers data by conducting individual interviews, and a series of stakeholder workshops to better understand the complexity of designing SOIs collectively. Amongst the main findings, this report identifies how individual and collective conceptual nuances of innovation and sustainability affect the stakeholders' ability to embark on sustainability innovations in tourism. Further, it describes collective objectives, drivers and barriers that stakeholders identified when developing SOIs. The report also offers an analysis of current tourism specific and non-tourism SOIs in Barcelona and potential ways in which these existing SOIs could be leveraged to facilitate systemic change. One of the key findings of the study is a collection of co-created SOIs by the stakeholders, which are analysed in terms of their sustainability impact and their type of innovation. These SOIs include a wide range of policy actions and interventions related to management, product development and marketing, education, incentives and monitoring and evaluation. Amongst these SOIs, during the project, the stakeholders decided to focus on expanding on four SOIs which could have a greater potential to create systemic change in the sustainable development of the city and thus in the tourism sector. These four SOIs are presented in this report as one-page business plans to facilitate its potential application. Finally, the study provides a series of recommendations to enhance collaboration and governance mechanisms to allow SOIs to thrive as collective actions that are powered by legitimacy, trust and a fair distribution of power. In this line, to empower stakeholders to utilize the findings of this project the report introduces the idea of creating a Sustainability Innovation LivingLab.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Other literature type 2021Publisher:Unknown Authors: Sumoza Matos, Rolando J.; Sumoza Matos, Rolando J.;This article aims to determine the main factors related to technology and labor nutrition that influence the management of organizations in transmodernity, in order to orient them towards the quality of life and sustainability. Transmodernity is used as a category of philosophical origin, comparable to other conceptions that seek to demarcate paradigmatic cycles in human history and that are strongly marked by digital-based technology. For its part, quality of life and sustainability are used as categories that encompass medical-biological aspects of the human being, as well as behavioral elements whose manifestation translates into a life considered healthy and, therefore, labor-productive. Hence, nutrition is considered as a whole (that is, involving food production and consumption, physical activity, and elimination of toxic substances), as well as its relationship with technological advances in pursuit of decent work, as a fundamental element of sustainable development and its influence on food security. The research was developed under a fundamentally documentary and hermeneutic methodology. The central guidelines are based on Gadamerian (and in some points, Derridian) postulates, which allowed visualizing both historical aspects of the terms, as well as the current conceptions of the categories, also allowing epistemological disruptions when necessary. The methodological position ends in a conceptual reconstruction, through a contrast with statistics, concepts, and current premises, published by international organizations working on the different relational topics. As a general conclusion of the research, it can be stated that nutrition management is necessary for today's organizations in the different departments and organizational aspects. Here the technology of the so-called industry 4.0 has a fundamental role (for example, through nanotechnology, nutritional genomics, food computing, among others), to make it more precise and practical. Thus, a nutrition management 4.0 can drive the improvement of the quality of life of the working human being.

This process has an impact on the mobility of people in the city and the means to move both in metropolitan areas and in medium-sized cities. This article analyzes the evolution, between 2001 and 2019, of the motorized vehicle fleet in the communes of Chile in intermediate cities. Through the compilation and systematization of databases provided by official agencies and the use of statistical analysis, the explosive but heterogeneous increase of the vehicle fleet in the communes of such cities is made visible. This differentiated increase does not follow patterns related to urban hierarchy, poverty, income, or even those communes with a successful development model sustained by raw material exports. Based on the above, it is concluded that there are other multi-causal elements in the evolution of such vehicle fleet, such as inter-urban flows between communes, the morphology of the city or climatic conditions. These results invite us to reflect on the type of city that is being built and the problems in the sustainability of such growth for urban areas in the near future, due to the absence or weakness of pertinent territorial policies that favor other means of mobility.

Abstract Companies engage in ESG activities to achieve higher financial returns and signal compliance in the marketplace. The link between ESG and company stock performance is not yet well established because the literature is full of contradictory results and paradoxes. This study is carried out with the objective of presenting the theoretical and empirical contributions whose object of study is to evaluate the risk-adjusted performance of ESG investment, for which global research is considered, which is retrieved in the main databases. The results indicate that most of the research is carried out for developed financial markets, while research in emerging markets is scarce. The issue of ESG investment performance when compared to conventional investment presents heterogeneous results, there are those who indicate that ESG investment pays a premium, there are others who find that ESG investment presents higher returns than conventional investment and finally there is a group which indicates that the ESG investment, when compared to the conventional one, has the same performance.

The industrialisation and modern technification of our society has favoured the genesis of global problems. Physical Education Didactics is facing serious problems of sustainability. There are increasingly strong tendencies that preach a Physical Education that makes motor behaviour sustainable, favouring learning, procedures, evaluations, materials and resources that facilitate sustainable behaviour and a balanced and healthy life. We present a systematic review of educational experiences in sustainable physical activity programmes. Aim: To obtain scientific evidence on sustainable physical education didactics for children and adolescents during the present decade, to compare studies that relate physical education to sustainable practices and to determine research efforts to develop sustainable physical education patterns in schoolchildren and adolescents. Methods: The search descriptors used were: physical activity, childhood, youth, environment and sustainability. Records were limited to those published in English, French and Spanish between January 2010 and December 2020. 11 studies fulfilled the review requirements: 5 considered sustainability in relation to healthy habits, 4 studied sustainable Physical Education programmes and 2 assessed nature protection activities. Results & discussion: with the selected articles we appreciate that it is necessary to develop a new didactics together with a new sustainable physical education, but also a sustainable sport eminently respectful with the person, with their limits, that does not take unnecessary risks and that carries out daily practices with the aim of restoring the damage caused, of care, of rest, so that the athlete, who demands so much and so much from their body, learns to look after it and give it everything it needs to be able to live in a peaceful, happy and healthy way. Conclusions: In the last decade there are not enough studies on sustainability of physical activity in youth and childhood. There is a lack of studies on responsible, tolerant physical activity and on the role of women in youth and childhood. description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2021Publisher:Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie Authors: Kátia Cyrlene de Araujo Vasconcelos; Annor da Silva Junior;Purpose: The objective of this study is to understand how the learning process of sustainability occurs within the context of the harvesting practices of a forest-based company.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2022Publisher:Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Sede Ecuador Authors: Francisco Maturana; Mauricio Morales; Ulises Sepúlveda; Johana Maldonado;Urbanization is developing in all areas of the planet.
