The safeguard of power equipments is assuming a major role in the deregulated electricity market, where a malfunctioning power system could be responsible for serious damages to a large number of system operators having access to the shared energy resource. In this context thermal monitoring of power cables represents a key issue in evaluating the risks associated with a given load management policy especially during emergency conditions. In particular this demands for reliable assessment models that should be able to predict the transient thermal behaviour when the load exceeds the nameplate value. In this connection the application of both simplified and detailed power cable thermal models is often complicated by the presence of uncertainties affecting the tolerances of the input data. The effect of these uncertainties could influence the final solution to a considerable extent. A comprehensive tolerance analysis is therefore required in order to incorporate the effect of data uncertainties into the thermal modelling process. To address this problem, in the paper the employment of interval mathematic is proposed. Several numerical results are presented and discussed in order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology which offer a rough qualitative insight of the solution in a very short time, comparable to the time required for a deterministic numerical simulation.

Opschoor; S.M. de Bruyn; It has been suggested that the relationship between income and the associated environmental pressure in terms of derived materials inputs and pollution levels may take an inverted-U shape, indicating a 'delinking' of environmental pressure from economic growth in relation to rising per capita incomes. The likelihood of such a relationship being persistent is discussed in the context of a simple macro model of industrial metabolism, and the possibility of 'relinking' clearly emerges. Data on specific indicators of environmental pressure (i.e., the throughput of materials, energy and the volume of transport) in 19 countries have been used to investigate patterns of delinking. The results suggest that delinking may not be persistent; already some advanced economies may be entering a new period of relinking. The relationships between environmental pressure and welfare in the medium long term may be N-shaped rather than inverted-U-shaped.

Guinée; Reinout Heijungs; Michael Zwicky Hauschild; Tomas Ekvall;Life Cycle Assessment is a tool to assess the environmental impacts and resources used throughout a product's life cycle, i.e., from raw material acquisition, via production and use phases, to waste management. The methodological development in LCA has been strong, and LCA is broadly applied in practice. The aim of this paper is to provide a review of recent developments of LCA methods. The focus is on some areas where there has been an intense methodological development during the last years. We also highlight some of the emerging issues. In relation to the Goal and Scope definition we especially discuss the distinction between attributional and consequential LCA. For the Inventory Analysis, this distinction is relevant when discussing system boundaries, data collection, and allocation. Also highlighted are developments concerning databases and Input-Output and hybrid LCA. In the sections on Life Cycle Impact Assessment we discuss the characteristics of the modelling as well as some recent developments for specific impact categories and weighting. In relation to the Interpretation the focus is on uncertainty analysis. Finally, we discuss recent developments in relation to some of the strengths and weaknesses of LCA.

An experimental apparatus for evaluating carbon dioxide local heat transfer coefficients during flow boiling has been set up at University of Naples Federico II. In this paper, the local heat transfer coefficient measured is evaluated relative to the measurement error, varying the type and costs of the instrumentation. The analytical analysis has been performed prior to construction of the test facility. The main aim of the work is to provide a methodology that allows one to reach the best compromise between measurement accuracy and financial resources in the selection of the instrumentation.

Hommelberg; Koen Kok; C.J. Warmer; B. Roossien; Jan-Willem Turkstra; It is expected that mu-CHP units in households will penetrate the market in the Netherlands at high speed in the coming few years. As a result, the consuming households will then also produce electricity, which makes them suitable for local management of the grid. Using ICT, the mu-CHPs can be clustered in a virtual power plant (VPP). One application of such a VPP is the reduction of peak loads in the local substation by shifting the mu-CHP operation to moments when there is a large demand in electricity. In a field test conducted by ECN and Gasunie, it was found that a cluster of 10 households, each equipped with a mu-CHP is able to reduce the substation peak load with 30-50% without infringement of the user comfort.

The combustion of biomass char in a bubbling fluidized bed is hereby addressed, with specific reference to the influence that the combustion of fine char particles may exert on ash deposition and bed agglomeration phenomena. Experiments of steady fluidized bed combustion FBC) of powdered biomass were carried out with the aim of mimicking the postcombustion of attrited char fines generated in the fluidized bed combustion of coarse char. Experimental results showed that the char elutriation rate is much smaller than expected on the basis of the average size of the biomass powder and of the carbon loading in the combustor. Samples of bed material collected after prolonged operation of the combustor were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)–EDX analysis and revealed the formation of relatively coarse sand–ash–carbon aggregates. The phenomenology is consistent with the establishment of a char phase attached to the bed material as a consequence of adhesion of char fines onto the sand particles. Combustion under sound-assisted fluidization conditions was also tested. As expected, enhancement of fines adhesion on bed material and further reduction of the elutriation rate were observed. Experimental results are interpreted in the light of a simple model which accounts for elutriation of free fines, adhesion of free fines onto bed material and detachment of attached fines by attrition of char–sand aggregates. Combustion of both free and attached char fines is considered. The parameters of the model are assessed on the basis of the measured carbon loadings and elutriation rates. Model computations are directed to estimate the effective size and the peak temperature of char–sand aggregates. The theoretical estimates of the effective aggregate size match fairly well those observed in the experiments.

The torque control of an asynchronous motor fed by a voltage source inverter (VSI) is performed by evaluating, by means of a microprocessor, in each sampling interval the voltage space vector which gives rise to a mean value of the electromagnetic torque just equal to the imposed one. The correspondent modulation technique for the VSI is described. The results obtained by means of a numerical simulation show a very good behavior both in steady state and in transient operation, with particular reference to the accuracy and the quickness of the drive response. >

More than 109 pores with a diameter of 2.5 μm and a depth of 100 μm are obtained in a single etch step. These pores can be used as a template for the fabrication of high‐density MOS capacitors. If the current density is close to the characteristic peak for the anodic etching of Si in HF solutions, nanowires are obtained. The length of these wires can reach values up to 100 μm, while their width can be as small as 30 nm. This method is a suitable way to the high‐volume production of nanowires.
