    Railways play an essential role in China’s development, driving economic and social progress while negatively impacting the environment. Assessing different railway projects’ sustainability can maximize the positive effects and minimize the side effects. This article aims to propose a methodological framework containing a series of indicators to evaluate the sustainability of four railway projects in China. A hybrid MCDM (multi-criteria decision-making) method was adopted to analyze the interrelationships among the dimensions and indicators and then present the projects’ differences. The weights of each indicator in the research were studied according to experts’ advice, and the same indicators were of different importance when placed in different research environments, such as developing and developed countries. This helps to establish a developing-country-centered evaluation indicator system. After comparison, it can be seen that Railway A is the best in terms of sustainability, mainly because it is in an economically developed region of China that is rich in construction resources, and is less constrained by natural conditions than other projects. The results show that although environmental sustainability has been improved over the past few years, its low level of influence still urges people to invest more attention and take more actions with significant effects in this respect. Furthermore, railways show significant differences in economic sustainability, while the differences in social sustainability have reduced considerably. This study provides further insight into the investigated measures and proposes recommendations for improving railway transport in China.

    The diffusion of electric vehicles (EVs) can be sustained by the presence of integrated solutions offering parking and clean power supply. The recourse to DC systems allows better integration of EV bidirectional energy exchange, photovoltaic panels, and energy storage. In this paper, a methodology for optimal techno-economic sizing of a DC-microgrid for covering EV mobility needs is carried out. It is based on the definition of different scenarios of operation, according to typical EV usage outlooks and environmental conditions. In each scenario, optimal operation is carried out by means of a specific approach for EV commitment on different stations. The sizing procedure is able to handle the modular structure of microgrid devices. The proposed approach is applied to a case study of an envisaged EV service fleet for the Bari port authority.

    To take advantage of the high tidal current velocity near the free surface, the horizontal axis turbine is installed, which inevitably causes hydrodynamic characteristics to effect the turbine by the waves. In this article, we established a numerical calculation method for the hydrodynamic load of a horizontal axis turbine under wave-current conditions. Based on the numerical calculation results, the hydrodynamic loads were decomposed and the influence rules of wave parameters and blade tip immersion depth on the hydrodynamic load were obtained. The study found the following: (1) the multi-frequency fluctuations based on the rotation frequency and incident wave frequency occurred in instantaneous values of the axial load coefficients and energy utilization ratios, and the fluctuation amplitude decreased with the increase of the blade tip immersion depth; (2) the fluctuation amplitude, according to rotation frequency, changed less with the increase of wave period and wave height, and was smaller according to wave frequency; (3) the fluctuation amplitude based on wave frequency increased linearly with the increase of wave height and wave period. The research results can provide the basis and reference for the design and engineering application of tidal current power station.

    The survey data contain information on the socio-economic characteristics and intention of electric vehicle (EV) adoption amongst paratransit owners and drivers, to address knowledge gaps and inform policy-making in paratransit electrification. The data were collected by distributing a Microsoft Forms survey questionnaire among paratransit owners and drivers in and around Cape Town, South Africa. The questions in the survey were designed to gain information, and to provide information on the latent constructs of the behavioral framework constructed in “Electric vehicle adoption intention among paratransit owners and drivers in South Africa”. The data were used in the aforementioned paper to shed light on the attitudes, barriers, and enablers to EV adoption in the paratransit sector, providing insights for targeted interventions and promoting sustainable mobility. The data can be re-used for more in-depth studies of, as well as comparative studies assessing the socio-economic profiles and EV perceptions of paratransit owners and drivers in vs. other regions, and longitudinal studies benchmarking changes in EV perceptions in these demographics over time. Comparative studies could identify regional variations, cultural influences, and policy implications for promoting EV adoption in different contexts, and longitudinal studies can assess the effectiveness of interventions, policy changes, or technological advancements on EV adoption in the paratransit sector over time.

    The present study aims to evaluate the difference in the fluid-dynamic behavior of an overtopping wave energy converter under the incidence of irregular waves based on a realistic sea state when compared to the incidence of regular waves, representative of this sea state. Thus, the sea data of three regions from the Rio Grande do Sul coast, Brazil, were considered. Fluent software was employed for the computational modeling, which is based on the finite volume method (FVM). The numerical generation of waves occurred through the imposition of the velocity boundary conditions using transient discrete values through the WaveMIMO methodology. The volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase model was applied to treat the water–air interaction. The results for the water amount accumulated in the device reservoir showed that the fluid-dynamic behavior of the overtopping converter has significant differences when comparing the two proposed approaches. Differences up to 240% were found for the water mass accumulated in the overtopping device reservoir, showing evidence that the results can be overestimated when the overtopping device is analyzed under the incidence of the representative regular waves. Furthermore, for all studied cases, it was possible to approximate the water volume accumulated over time in the overtopping reservoir through a first-degree polynomial function.

    The article pertains to the utilization of the application potential of MCDM/MCDA (Multi-Criteria Decision Making/Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis) methods in decision-making problems in the field of transport in light of sustainable development. The article consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. As part of the literature studies, a review was carried out on the latest applications of MCDM/MCDA methods for decision-making problems in the field of transport. In the empirical part, a multi-criteria analysis of the placement selection for a strip of expressway located in north-eastern Poland was carried out. For this purpose, a hybrid approach was used, consisting of three selected MCDM/MCDA methods: DEMATEL, REMBRANDT, and VIKOR. The ranking was compared with the results achieved in the EIA report of the investment and the results were obtained by using a different set of MCDM/MCDA methods that were proposed in the first part of the research, i.e., AHP, Fuzzy AHP, TOPSIS, and PROMETHEE. The performed multi-criteria analyses allowed for an eventual multi-dimensional evaluation of the most popular MCDM/MCDA methods currently applied in the field of transport.

    The power coupling equation and energy consumption model for enhancing the fuel economy and power performance of plug-in hybrid electric trucks (PHETs) are proposed based on the economic velocity planning strategy (EVPS-DSIDP), which takes into account the driving style and an improved dynamic programming (IDP) algorithm. This strategy employs a fuzzy controller to identify the driving style, and optimizes the efficiency and accuracy of the conventional dynamic programming (DP) algorithm by associating decision variables, dynamically adjusting the discretization step size, and restricting the state space. Additionally, a penalty function is introduced to enhance the robustness of the DP algorithm. Under our EVPS-DSIDP, the variation of velocity is liberated from the constraints of fixed driving conditions, and directly correlates with road information and driving styles, which is of significant importance for addressing energy management issues in real-time traffic conditions. Moreover, the proposed IDP algorithm can improve computational efficiency while ensuring calculation accuracy, thereby greatly enhancing the potential for the practical application of this algorithm in real-world vehicle scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that compared to the rule-based control strategy, the application of the proposed EVPS-DSIDP in the economy velocity planning strategy can achieve an average reduction of 2.88% in economic costs and 10.6% in travel time across different driving styles. This approach offers a more comprehensive optimization of both fuel economy and power performance.

    Pollutant emissions have been a topic of interest in the last decades. Not only environmentalists but also governments are taking rapid action to reduce emissions. As one of the main contributors, the transport sector is being subjected to strict scrutiny to ensure it complies with the short and long-term regulations. The measures imposed by governments clearly involve all the stakeholders in the logistics sector, from road authorities and logistic operators to truck manufacturers. The improvement of traffic conditions is one of the perspectives in which the reduction of emissions is being addressed. Optimization of traffic flow, avoidance of unnecessary stops, control of the cruise speed, and coordination of trips in an energy-efficient way are necessary steps to remain compliant with the upcoming regulations. In this study, we have estimated the CO2 and NOx emissions in heavy-duty vehicles while traversing signalized intersections, and we examined the differences between various behavioral scenarios. We found a consistent trend indicating that avoiding a stop can potentially reduce CO2 and NOx emissions by up to 0.32kg and 1.8g, respectively. Furthermore, an upper bound for the yearly CO2 savings is provided for the case of The Netherlands. A reduction of 3.2% of the total CO2 emitted by heavy-duty vehicles is estimated. These results put traffic control in the main scene as a yet unexplored dimension to control pollutant emissions, enabling authorities to more accurately estimate cost–benefit plans for traffic control system investments.

    AbstractThe Law of the Sea and regional and national laws and agreements require exploited populations or stocks to be managed so that they can produce maximum sustainable yields. However, exploitation level and stock status are unknown for most stocks because the data required for full stock assessments are missing. This study presents a new method [abundance maximum sustainable yields (AMSY)] that estimates relative population size when no catch data are available using time series of catch-per-unit-effort or other relative abundance indices as the main input. AMSY predictions for relative stock size were not significantly different from the “true” values when compared with simulated data. Also, they were not significantly different from relative stock size estimated by data-rich models in 88% of the comparisons within 140 real stocks. Application of AMSY to 38 data-poor stocks showed the suitability of the method and led to the first assessments for 23 species. Given the lack of catch data as input, AMSY estimates of exploitation come with wide margins of uncertainty, which may not be suitable for management. However, AMSY seems to be well suited for estimating productivity as well as relative stock size and may, therefore, aid in the management of data-poor stocks.

    Output generated by the RAMP engine for use in the Sector-Coupled Euro-Calliope model. The three datasets in this repository are described briefly here and in more detail in the accompanying README files. Each dataset has an hourly temporal resolution spanning the years 2000 - 2018 (inclusive) and a national spatial resolution spanning 26* - 28** countries in Europe. All datasets are dimensionless; only the profile shapes are used in Euro-Calliope. Cooking energy demand profiles (ramp-cooking-profiles): Profiles of heat energy demand for cooking in buildings in Europe, stochastically generated using the RAMP model [1]. These profiles are used to distribute annual cooking energy demand in the Euro-Calliope workflow. This dataset covers 28 European countries**. Electric vehicle plug-in profiles (ramp-ev-plugin-profiles): Profiles of the percentage of parked electric vehicles, stochastically generated using the RAMP-Mobility model [2]. These profiles are used in Euro-Calliope to define the maximum number of electric vehicles that could be plugged in and therefore available to be charged at any given time, assuming controlled (or "smart") charging. This dataset covers 26 European countries*. Electric vehicle energy consumption profiles (ramp-ev-consumption-profiles): Profiles of the electricity consumption of electric vehicles, stochastically generated using the RAMP-Mobility model [2].     Railways play an essential role in China’s development, driving economic and social progress while negatively impacting the environment. Assessing different railway projects’ sustainability can maximize the positive effects and minimize the side effects. This article aims to propose a methodological framework containing a series of indicators to evaluate the sustainability of four railway projects in China. A hybrid MCDM (multi-criteria decision-making) method was adopted to analyze the interrelationships among the dimensions and indicators and then present the projects’ differences. The weights of each indicator in the research were studied according to experts’ advice, and the same indicators were of different importance when placed in different research environments, such as developing and developed countries. This helps to establish a developing-country-centered evaluation indicator system. After comparison, it can be seen that Railway A is the best in terms of sustainability, mainly because it is in an economically developed region of China that is rich in construction resources, and is less constrained by natural conditions than other projects. The results show that although environmental sustainability has been improved over the past few years, its low level of influence still urges people to invest more attention and take more actions with significant effects in this respect. Furthermore, railways show significant differences in economic sustainability, while the differences in social sustainability have reduced considerably. This study provides further insight into the investigated measures and proposes recommendations for improving railway transport in China.

    The diffusion of electric vehicles (EVs) can be sustained by the presence of integrated solutions offering parking and clean power supply. The recourse to DC systems allows better integration of EV bidirectional energy exchange, photovoltaic panels, and energy storage. In this paper, a methodology for optimal techno-economic sizing of a DC-microgrid for covering EV mobility needs is carried out. It is based on the definition of different scenarios of operation, according to typical EV usage outlooks and environmental conditions. In each scenario, optimal operation is carried out by means of a specific approach for EV commitment on different stations. The sizing procedure is able to handle the modular structure of microgrid devices. The proposed approach is applied to a case study of an envisaged EV service fleet for the Bari port authority.

    To take advantage of the high tidal current velocity near the free surface, the horizontal axis turbine is installed, which inevitably causes hydrodynamic characteristics to effect the turbine by the waves. In this article, we established a numerical calculation method for the hydrodynamic load of a horizontal axis turbine under wave-current conditions. Based on the numerical calculation results, the hydrodynamic loads were decomposed and the influence rules of wave parameters and blade tip immersion depth on the hydrodynamic load were obtained. The study found the following: (1) the multi-frequency fluctuations based on the rotation frequency and incident wave frequency occurred in instantaneous values of the axial load coefficients and energy utilization ratios, and the fluctuation amplitude decreased with the increase of the blade tip immersion depth; (2) the fluctuation amplitude, according to rotation frequency, changed less with the increase of wave period and wave height, and was smaller according to wave frequency; (3) the fluctuation amplitude based on wave frequency increased linearly with the increase of wave height and wave period. The research results can provide the basis and reference for the design and engineering application of tidal current power station.

    The survey data contain information on the socio-economic characteristics and intention of electric vehicle (EV) adoption amongst paratransit owners and drivers, to address knowledge gaps and inform policy-making in paratransit electrification. The data were collected by distributing a Microsoft Forms survey questionnaire among paratransit owners and drivers in and around Cape Town, South Africa. The questions in the survey were designed to gain information, and to provide information on the latent constructs of the behavioral framework constructed in “Electric vehicle adoption intention among paratransit owners and drivers in South Africa”. The data were used in the aforementioned paper to shed light on the attitudes, barriers, and enablers to EV adoption in the paratransit sector, providing insights for targeted interventions and promoting sustainable mobility. The data can be re-used for more in-depth studies of, as well as comparative studies assessing the socio-economic profiles and EV perceptions of paratransit owners and drivers in vs. other regions, and longitudinal studies benchmarking changes in EV perceptions in these demographics over time. Comparative studies could identify regional variations, cultural influences, and policy implications for promoting EV adoption in different contexts, and longitudinal studies can assess the effectiveness of interventions, policy changes, or technological advancements on EV adoption in the paratransit sector over time.

    The present study aims to evaluate the difference in the fluid-dynamic behavior of an overtopping wave energy converter under the incidence of irregular waves based on a realistic sea state when compared to the incidence of regular waves, representative of this sea state. Thus, the sea data of three regions from the Rio Grande do Sul coast, Brazil, were considered. Fluent software was employed for the computational modeling, which is based on the finite volume method (FVM). The numerical generation of waves occurred through the imposition of the velocity boundary conditions using transient discrete values through the WaveMIMO methodology. The volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase model was applied to treat the water–air interaction. The results for the water amount accumulated in the device reservoir showed that the fluid-dynamic behavior of the overtopping converter has significant differences when comparing the two proposed approaches. Differences up to 240% were found for the water mass accumulated in the overtopping device reservoir, showing evidence that the results can be overestimated when the overtopping device is analyzed under the incidence of the representative regular waves. Furthermore, for all studied cases, it was possible to approximate the water volume accumulated over time in the overtopping reservoir through a first-degree polynomial function.

    The article pertains to the utilization of the application potential of MCDM/MCDA (Multi-Criteria Decision Making/Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis) methods in decision-making problems in the field of transport in light of sustainable development. The article consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. As part of the literature studies, a review was carried out on the latest applications of MCDM/MCDA methods for decision-making problems in the field of transport. In the empirical part, a multi-criteria analysis of the placement selection for a strip of expressway located in north-eastern Poland was carried out. For this purpose, a hybrid approach was used, consisting of three selected MCDM/MCDA methods: DEMATEL, REMBRANDT, and VIKOR. The ranking was compared with the results achieved in the EIA report of the investment and the results were obtained by using a different set of MCDM/MCDA methods that were proposed in the first part of the research, i.e., AHP, Fuzzy AHP, TOPSIS, and PROMETHEE. The performed multi-criteria analyses allowed for an eventual multi-dimensional evaluation of the most popular MCDM/MCDA methods currently applied in the field of transport.

    The power coupling equation and energy consumption model for enhancing the fuel economy and power performance of plug-in hybrid electric trucks (PHETs) are proposed based on the economic velocity planning strategy (EVPS-DSIDP), which takes into account the driving style and an improved dynamic programming (IDP) algorithm. This strategy employs a fuzzy controller to identify the driving style, and optimizes the efficiency and accuracy of the conventional dynamic programming (DP) algorithm by associating decision variables, dynamically adjusting the discretization step size, and restricting the state space. Additionally, a penalty function is introduced to enhance the robustness of the DP algorithm. Under our EVPS-DSIDP, the variation of velocity is liberated from the constraints of fixed driving conditions, and directly correlates with road information and driving styles, which is of significant importance for addressing energy management issues in real-time traffic conditions. Moreover, the proposed IDP algorithm can improve computational efficiency while ensuring calculation accuracy, thereby greatly enhancing the potential for the practical application of this algorithm in real-world vehicle scenarios. The simulation results demonstrate that compared to the rule-based control strategy, the application of the proposed EVPS-DSIDP in the economy velocity planning strategy can achieve an average reduction of 2.88% in economic costs and 10.6% in travel time across different driving styles. This approach offers a more comprehensive optimization of both fuel economy and power performance.

    Pollutant emissions have been a topic of interest in the last decades. Not only environmentalists but also governments are taking rapid action to reduce emissions. As one of the main contributors, the transport sector is being subjected to strict scrutiny to ensure it complies with the short and long-term regulations. The measures imposed by governments clearly involve all the stakeholders in the logistics sector, from road authorities and logistic operators to truck manufacturers. The improvement of traffic conditions is one of the perspectives in which the reduction of emissions is being addressed. Optimization of traffic flow, avoidance of unnecessary stops, control of the cruise speed, and coordination of trips in an energy-efficient way are necessary steps to remain compliant with the upcoming regulations. In this study, we have estimated the CO2 and NOx emissions in heavy-duty vehicles while traversing signalized intersections, and we examined the differences between various behavioral scenarios. We found a consistent trend indicating that avoiding a stop can potentially reduce CO2 and NOx emissions by up to 0.32kg and 1.8g, respectively. Furthermore, an upper bound for the yearly CO2 savings is provided for the case of The Netherlands. A reduction of 3.2% of the total CO2 emitted by heavy-duty vehicles is estimated. These results put traffic control in the main scene as a yet unexplored dimension to control pollutant emissions, enabling authorities to more accurately estimate cost–benefit plans for traffic control system investments.

    AbstractThe Law of the Sea and regional and national laws and agreements require exploited populations or stocks to be managed so that they can produce maximum sustainable yields. However, exploitation level and stock status are unknown for most stocks because the data required for full stock assessments are missing. This study presents a new method [abundance maximum sustainable yields (AMSY)] that estimates relative population size when no catch data are available using time series of catch-per-unit-effort or other relative abundance indices as the main input. AMSY predictions for relative stock size were not significantly different from the “true” values when compared with simulated data. Also, they were not significantly different from relative stock size estimated by data-rich models in 88% of the comparisons within 140 real stocks. Application of AMSY to 38 data-poor stocks showed the suitability of the method and led to the first assessments for 23 species. Given the lack of catch data as input, AMSY estimates of exploitation come with wide margins of uncertainty, which may not be suitable for management. However, AMSY seems to be well suited for estimating productivity as well as relative stock size and may, therefore, aid in the management of data-poor stocks.

    Output generated by the RAMP engine for use in the Sector-Coupled Euro-Calliope model. The three datasets in this repository are described briefly here and in more detail in the accompanying README files. Each dataset has an hourly temporal resolution spanning the years 2000 - 2018 (inclusive) and a national spatial resolution spanning 26* - 28** countries in Europe. All datasets are dimensionless; only the profile shapes are used in Euro-Calliope. Cooking energy demand profiles (ramp-cooking-profiles): Profiles of heat energy demand for cooking in buildings in Europe, stochastically generated using the RAMP model [1]. These profiles are used to distribute annual cooking energy demand in the Euro-Calliope workflow. This dataset covers 28 European countries**. Electric vehicle plug-in profiles (ramp-ev-plugin-profiles): Profiles of the percentage of parked electric vehicles, stochastically generated using the RAMP-Mobility model [2]. These profiles are used in Euro-Calliope to define the maximum number of electric vehicles that could be plugged in and therefore available to be charged at any given time, assuming controlled (or "smart") charging. This dataset covers 26 European countries*. Electric vehicle energy consumption profiles (ramp-ev-consumption-profiles): Profiles of the electricity consumption of electric vehicles, stochastically generated using the RAMP-Mobility model [2]. These profiles are aggregated in Euro-Calliope to provide a required percentage of total vehicle electricity demand that must be met in each month.
