In light of the increasing number of electric vehicles (EV), disorderly charging in mountainous cities has implications for the stability and efficient utilization of the power grid. It is a roadblock to lowering carbon emissions. EV aggregators are a bridge between EV users and the grid, a platform to achieve energy and information interoperability, and a study of the orderly charging of EVs to reach carbon emission targets. As for the objective function, the EV aggregator considers the probability of EV charging access in mountainous cities, the SOC expectation of EV users, the transformer capacity constraint, the charging start time, and other constraints to maximize revenue. Considering the access probability of charging for users in mountainous cities, the optimized Lagrange relaxation method is used to solve the objective function. The disorderly charging, centralized optimized charging, and decentralized optimized charging modes are investigated using simulation calculations. Their load profiles, economic benefits, and computational efficiency are compared in three ways. Decentralized optimal charging using the Lagrange relaxation method is shown to be 50% more effective and to converge 279% faster than centralized optimal charging.

To address this problem, this paper presents an EV charging path planning approach that considers coupled faults in the distribution-transportation network. First, the cascading failure model of the distribution-transportation network and the model for choosing charging stations are presented to transfer the information of coupling faults propagation and coupling points power interaction to the follow-up path planning scheme. Second, a time occupancy road resistance model that considers congested and unobstructed traffic states is proposed to calculate the road section travel time, based on the analysis results of the evolution process of road traffic flow queuing using traffic wave theory. For the speed and density parameters in the traffic wave model, values are calculated using the logistics speed-density model and the time occupancy model. Third, a multi-objective optimization function that integrates travel cost and coupling network operation state is determined from the perspective of hindering the propagation of coupling faults. The function is solved to recommend optimal charging paths using an improved A* searching algorithm. Finally, a 90-bus road network and three 33-bus distribution networks are selected as examples to verify the veracity and validity of the proposed model and method. The research results demonstrate that the proposed method can alleviate traffic congestion.

In recent years, the orderly charging of electric vehicles (EVs) in commercial parking has become a meaningful research topic due to the increasing number of EVs, especially for parking lots close to workplaces and serving fixed users. In this paper, a parking lot energy management system integrated with energy storage system (ESS) and photovoltaic (PV) system is established. The concept of energy price tag (EPT) is introduced to define the price of all energy storage devices, and the priority order between PV, ESS, EVs, and power grid is established. Taking the minimization of charging cost as the optimization objective, the charging plans of ESS, EVs, and buildings are optimized considering the constraints of EVs user demand and PV power. By comparing the simulation results of four cases, it is proven that this strategy can reduce the charging cost and improve the consumption rate of PV.

Research on the influence of age on various automated driving conditions will contribute to an understanding of driving behavior characteristics and the development of specific automated driving systems. This study aims to analyze the relationship between age and takeover behavior in automated driving, where 16 test conditions were taken into consideration, including two driving tasks, two warning times and four driving scenarios. Forty-two drivers in Beijing, China in 2020 were recruited to participate in a static driving simulator with Level 3 (L3) conditional automation to obtain detailed test information of the recorded takeover time, mean speed and mean lateral offset. An ANOVA test was proposed to examine the significance among different age groups and conditions. The results confirmed that reaction time increased significantly with age and the driving stability of the older group was worse than the young and middle groups. It was also indicated that the older group could not adapt to complex tasks well when driving due to their limited cognitive driving ability. Additionally, the higher urgency of a scenario explained the variance in the takeover quality. According to the obtained influencing mechanisms, policy implications for the development of vehicle automation, considering the various driving behaviors of drivers, were put forward, so as to correctly identify the high-risk driving conditions in different age groups. For further research, on-road validation will be necessary in order to check for driving simulation-related effects.

Point absorbers are extensively employed in wave energy conversion. In this work, we studied the point absorber with the buoy of a vertical cylindrical shape. Wave power absorption is obtained through the relative motion between the buoy and an internal mass. Three power-absorption degrees of freedom are investigated, i.e., surge, heave, and pitch, together with the influence of wave compliance of the buoy. Results show that, to absorb more power, the internal mass should be as large as possible for power absorption in translational degrees of freedom, i.e., surge and heave. The total rotational inertia should be as large as possible and the center of mass should be as low as possible for power absorption in pitch. Wave compliance of the buoy slightly enhances the power absorption in surge, but significantly weakens the power absorption in pitch. Surge is the best degree of freedom for power absorption owing to the highest efficiency, indicated by the largest capture width ratio. The simple resistive control is found to be adequate for wave power absorption of the self-reacting point absorber.

This paper was intended to explore the mutual influences between electric vehicle (EV) charging and charging facility planning, to establish a two-stage model for optimizing the EVs’ charging and charging piles’ selection. In the first stage, the distribution pattern of the demands for EV charging, and various EVs were effectively grouped, in order to reduce the amount of computation for solving the second stage model. The goal of the second stage was to minimize the annual investment and electricity purchasing costs on the charging piles, and the coordinated optimization was carried out for EV charging and charging pile selection. The CPLEX and IP_SOLVE packages were used in MATLAB (R2014a/64 bits) to solve the established optimization model. The simulation results showed that, compared with the scheme for selecting the charging pile under the typical charging pattern (TCP), the total cost of the charging pile could be reduced by 6.32% with a scheme under the optimized charging pattern (OCP), thereby promoting the coordinated development of both the EVs and charging facilities.

The objective of this work is to identify the maximum absorbed power and optimal buoy geometry of a heaving axisymmetric point absorber for a given cost in different sea states. The cost of the wave energy converter is estimated as proportional to the displaced volume of the buoy, and the buoy geometry is described by the radius-to-draft ratio. A conservative wave-height-dependent motion constraint is introduced to prevent the buoy from jumping out of the free surface of waves. The constrained optimization problem is solved by a two-nested-loops method, within which a core fundamental optimization process employs the MATLAB function fmincon. Results show that the pretension of the mooring system should be as low as possible. Except for very small energy periods, the stiffness of both the power take-off and mooring system should also be as low as possible. A buoy with a small radius-to-draft ratio can absorb more power, but at the price of working in more energetic seas and oscillating at larger amplitudes. In addition, the method to choose the optimal buoy geometry at different sea states is provided.

Recently, electric vehicles (EVs) have received more and more attention, but the problem of the insufficient range is still the main reason that hinders electric vehicles to travel long distances. Under the premise of the battery capacity without technological innovation, the path planning method can ensure the safety and efficiency of electric vehicles in long-distance travel. This paper studies the actual freeway network to optimize the vehicle driving path and give the charging strategy based on the shortest travel time of a single vehicle. In this paper, a path and charging strategy planning model is proposed. In this model, the shortest travel time of a single vehicle is taken as the objective function, and the state of charging equipment in the actual road network and the safe electric quantity are considered as constraints. And the genetic algorithm is used to solve the model. Through case analysis, the rationality and optimization efficiency of the model proposed in this paper are verified. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of the three parameters of traffic volume, temperature, and travel speed is carried out with the Shanghai-Nanjing freeway network. The experimental results can get the nodes with the highest service pressure in the network, which can provide a theoretical basis for charging nodes’ expansion in the freeway network in the future.

This paper proposed a simplified calculation method to analyze the cyclic response of large-diameter single piles based on the modified strain wedge model. Firstly, the pile–soft clay interaction above the pile-rotating point is represented by a p–y curve, and the pile–soft clay interaction below the rotating point is represented by an equivalent rotation spring. At the same time, a stiffness attenuation model is proposed to describe the cyclic p–y curve for analyzing the cyclic bearing characteristics of soft clay. Finally, the simplified calculation method is verified by two case studies. The results from the proposed method agree reasonably well with the measured results. This can provide a new method for analyzing the horizontal cyclic bearing characteristics of piles.

SummaryIn 2008, European Union (EU) announced that from 2012, each international flight taking off and landing in EU would be given an emission permit. Therefore, the period of 2008–2012 can be regarded as a buffer period for global airlines. Although EU formally decides to exclude non‐EU airlines from the EU Emission Trading System on March 4, 2014, it is necessary to investigate the impacts of the policy on airline energy efficiency in this period. Airline energy efficiency is divided into three stages—operations stage, service stage, and sales stage—and Greenhouse gas emission is treated as an undesirable output of service stage. Two models, network range‐adjusted measure model with weak disposability and network range‐adjusted measure model with strong disposability, are established to evaluate the efficiencies of 22 international airlines from 2008 to 2012. The results show that (i) most airlines' efficiencies have decreased in the period, and the EU Emission Trading System is not effective for the efficiency improvement; (ii) the average efficiency of European airlines is almost the same as that of non‐European airlines; and (iii) the model with weak disposability is more reasonable in distinguishing efficiency differences, while strong disposability is a more reasonable way in treating undesirable outputs. In light of the increasing number of electric vehicles (EV), disorderly charging in mountainous cities has implications for the stability and efficient utilization of the power grid. It is a roadblock to lowering carbon emissions. EV aggregators are a bridge between EV users and the grid, a platform to achieve energy and information interoperability, and a study of the orderly charging of EVs to reach carbon emission targets. As for the objective function, the EV aggregator considers the probability of EV charging access in mountainous cities, the SOC expectation of EV users, the transformer capacity constraint, the charging start time, and other constraints to maximize revenue. Considering the access probability of charging for users in mountainous cities, the optimized Lagrange relaxation method is used to solve the objective function. The disorderly charging, centralized optimized charging, and decentralized optimized charging modes are investigated using simulation calculations. Their load profiles, economic benefits, and computational efficiency are compared in three ways. Decentralized optimal charging using the Lagrange relaxation method is shown to be 50% more effective and to converge 279% faster than centralized optimal charging.

To address this problem, this paper presents an EV charging path planning approach that considers coupled faults in the distribution-transportation network. First, the cascading failure model of the distribution-transportation network and the model for choosing charging stations are presented to transfer the information of coupling faults propagation and coupling points power interaction to the follow-up path planning scheme. Second, a time occupancy road resistance model that considers congested and unobstructed traffic states is proposed to calculate the road section travel time, based on the analysis results of the evolution process of road traffic flow queuing using traffic wave theory. For the speed and density parameters in the traffic wave model, values are calculated using the logistics speed-density model and the time occupancy model. Third, a multi-objective optimization function that integrates travel cost and coupling network operation state is determined from the perspective of hindering the propagation of coupling faults. The function is solved to recommend optimal charging paths using an improved A* searching algorithm. Finally, a 90-bus road network and three 33-bus distribution networks are selected as examples to verify the veracity and validity of the proposed model and method. The research results demonstrate that the proposed method can alleviate traffic congestion.

In recent years, the orderly charging of electric vehicles (EVs) in commercial parking has become a meaningful research topic due to the increasing number of EVs, especially for parking lots close to workplaces and serving fixed users. In this paper, a parking lot energy management system integrated with energy storage system (ESS) and photovoltaic (PV) system is established. The concept of energy price tag (EPT) is introduced to define the price of all energy storage devices, and the priority order between PV, ESS, EVs, and power grid is established. Taking the minimization of charging cost as the optimization objective, the charging plans of ESS, EVs, and buildings are optimized considering the constraints of EVs user demand and PV power. By comparing the simulation results of four cases, it is proven that this strategy can reduce the charging cost and improve the consumption rate of PV.

Research on the influence of age on various automated driving conditions will contribute to an understanding of driving behavior characteristics and the development of specific automated driving systems. This study aims to analyze the relationship between age and takeover behavior in automated driving, where 16 test conditions were taken into consideration, including two driving tasks, two warning times and four driving scenarios. Forty-two drivers in Beijing, China in 2020 were recruited to participate in a static driving simulator with Level 3 (L3) conditional automation to obtain detailed test information of the recorded takeover time, mean speed and mean lateral offset. An ANOVA test was proposed to examine the significance among different age groups and conditions. The results confirmed that reaction time increased significantly with age and the driving stability of the older group was worse than the young and middle groups. It was also indicated that the older group could not adapt to complex tasks well when driving due to their limited cognitive driving ability. Additionally, the higher urgency of a scenario explained the variance in the takeover quality. According to the obtained influencing mechanisms, policy implications for the development of vehicle automation, considering the various driving behaviors of drivers, were put forward, so as to correctly identify the high-risk driving conditions in different age groups. For further research, on-road validation will be necessary in order to check for driving simulation-related effects.

Point absorbers are extensively employed in wave energy conversion. In this work, we studied the point absorber with the buoy of a vertical cylindrical shape. Wave power absorption is obtained through the relative motion between the buoy and an internal mass. Three power-absorption degrees of freedom are investigated, i.e., surge, heave, and pitch, together with the influence of wave compliance of the buoy. Results show that, to absorb more power, the internal mass should be as large as possible for power absorption in translational degrees of freedom, i.e., surge and heave. The total rotational inertia should be as large as possible and the center of mass should be as low as possible for power absorption in pitch. Wave compliance of the buoy slightly enhances the power absorption in surge, but significantly weakens the power absorption in pitch. Surge is the best degree of freedom for power absorption owing to the highest efficiency, indicated by the largest capture width ratio. The simple resistive control is found to be adequate for wave power absorption of the self-reacting point absorber.

This paper was intended to explore the mutual influences between electric vehicle (EV) charging and charging facility planning, to establish a two-stage model for optimizing the EVs’ charging and charging piles’ selection. In the first stage, the distribution pattern of the demands for EV charging, and various EVs were effectively grouped, in order to reduce the amount of computation for solving the second stage model. The goal of the second stage was to minimize the annual investment and electricity purchasing costs on the charging piles, and the coordinated optimization was carried out for EV charging and charging pile selection. The CPLEX and IP_SOLVE packages were used in MATLAB (R2014a/64 bits) to solve the established optimization model. The simulation results showed that, compared with the scheme for selecting the charging pile under the typical charging pattern (TCP), the total cost of the charging pile could be reduced by 6.32% with a scheme under the optimized charging pattern (OCP), thereby promoting the coordinated development of both the EVs and charging facilities.

The objective of this work is to identify the maximum absorbed power and optimal buoy geometry of a heaving axisymmetric point absorber for a given cost in different sea states. The cost of the wave energy converter is estimated as proportional to the displaced volume of the buoy, and the buoy geometry is described by the radius-to-draft ratio. A conservative wave-height-dependent motion constraint is introduced to prevent the buoy from jumping out of the free surface of waves. The constrained optimization problem is solved by a two-nested-loops method, within which a core fundamental optimization process employs the MATLAB function fmincon. Results show that the pretension of the mooring system should be as low as possible. Except for very small energy periods, the stiffness of both the power take-off and mooring system should also be as low as possible. A buoy with a small radius-to-draft ratio can absorb more power, but at the price of working in more energetic seas and oscillating at larger amplitudes. In addition, the method to choose the optimal buoy geometry at different sea states is provided.

Recently, electric vehicles (EVs) have received more and more attention, but the problem of the insufficient range is still the main reason that hinders electric vehicles to travel long distances. Under the premise of the battery capacity without technological innovation, the path planning method can ensure the safety and efficiency of electric vehicles in long-distance travel. This paper studies the actual freeway network to optimize the vehicle driving path and give the charging strategy based on the shortest travel time of a single vehicle. In this paper, a path and charging strategy planning model is proposed. In this model, the shortest travel time of a single vehicle is taken as the objective function, and the state of charging equipment in the actual road network and the safe electric quantity are considered as constraints. And the genetic algorithm is used to solve the model. Through case analysis, the rationality and optimization efficiency of the model proposed in this paper are verified. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of the three parameters of traffic volume, temperature, and travel speed is carried out with the Shanghai-Nanjing freeway network. The experimental results can get the nodes with the highest service pressure in the network, which can provide a theoretical basis for charging nodes’ expansion in the freeway network in the future.

This paper proposed a simplified calculation method to analyze the cyclic response of large-diameter single piles based on the modified strain wedge model. Firstly, the pile–soft clay interaction above the pile-rotating point is represented by a p–y curve, and the pile–soft clay interaction below the rotating point is represented by an equivalent rotation spring. At the same time, a stiffness attenuation model is proposed to describe the cyclic p–y curve for analyzing the cyclic bearing characteristics of soft clay. Finally, the simplified calculation method is verified by two case studies. The results from the proposed method agree reasonably well with the measured results. This can provide a new method for analyzing the horizontal cyclic bearing characteristics of piles.

SummaryIn 2008, European Union (EU) announced that from 2012, each international flight taking off and landing in EU would be given an emission permit. Therefore, the period of 2008–2012 can be regarded as a buffer period for global airlines. Although EU formally decides to exclude non‐EU airlines from the EU Emission Trading System on March 4, 2014, it is necessary to investigate the impacts of the policy on airline energy efficiency in this period. Airline energy efficiency is divided into three stages—operations stage, service stage, and sales stage—and Greenhouse gas emission is treated as an undesirable output of service stage. Two models, network range‐adjusted measure model with weak disposability and network range‐adjusted measure model with strong disposability, are established to evaluate the efficiencies of 22 international airlines from 2008 to 2012. The results show that (i) most airlines' efficiencies have decreased in the period, and the EU Emission Trading System is not effective for the efficiency improvement; (ii) the average efficiency of European airlines is almost the same as that of non‐European airlines; and (iii) the model with weak disposability is more reasonable in distinguishing efficiency differences, while strong disposability is a more reasonable way in treating undesirable outputs.
