description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type , Journal 2010 SpainPublisher:Springer Science and Business Media LLC Andrés Moreno-Estrada; Andrés Moreno-Estrada; Estel Aparicio-Prat; Elena Bosch; Anna Ramírez-Soriano; Francesc Calafell; Martin Sikora; Johannes Engelken;Abstract Background The human FOXI1 gene codes for a transcription factor involved in the physiology of the inner ear, testis, and kidney. Using three interspecies comparisons, it has been suggested that this may be a gene under human-specific selection. We sought to confirm this finding by using an extended set of orthologous sequences. Additionally, we explored for signals of natural selection within humans by sequencing the gene in 20 Europeans, 20 East Asians and 20 Yorubas and by analysing SNP variation in a 2 Mb region centered on FOXI1 in 39 worldwide human populations from the HGDP-CEPH diversity panel. Results The genome sequences recently available from other primate and non-primate species showed that FOXI1 divergence patterns are compatible with neutral evolution. Sequence-based neutrality tests were not significant in Europeans, East Asians or Yorubas. However, the Long Range Haplotype (LRH) test, as well as the iHS and XP-Rsb statistics revealed significantly extended tracks of homozygosity around FOXI1 in Africa, suggesting a recent episode of positive selection acting on this gene. A functionally relevant SNP, as well as several SNPs either on the putatively selected core haplotypes or with significant iHS or XP-Rsb values, displayed allele frequencies strongly correlated with the absolute geographical latitude of the populations sampled. Conclusions We present evidence for recent positive selection in the FOXI1 gene region in Africa. Climate might be related to this recent adaptive event in humans. Of the multiple functions of FOXI1, its role in kidney-mediated water-electrolyte homeostasis is the most obvious candidate for explaining a climate-related adaptation.

The aim of this study is to perform a review of the state-of-the-art of the reactors available in the literature, which are used for solid–gas reactions or thermal decomposition processes around 1000 °C that could be further implemented for thermochemical energy storage in CSP (concentrated solar power) plants, specifically for SPT (solar power tower) technology. Both direct and indirect systems can be implemented, with direct and closed systems being the most studied ones. Among direct and closed systems, the most used configuration is the stacked bed reactor, with the fixed bed reactor being the most frequent option. Out of all of the reactors studied, almost 70% are used for solid–gas chemical reactions. Few data are available regarding solar efficiency in most of the processes, and the available information indicates relatively low values. Chemical reaction efficiencies show better values, especially in the case of a fluidized bed reactor for solid–gas chemical reactions, and fixed bed and rotary reactors for thermal decompositions.

Converters are the key for increasing the development of renewable energy generation but their dynamic interaction with the grid has an important impact on stability. Oscillatory instabilities in different grid‐connected converter systems at several frequency ranges are reported. In particular, sub and supersynchronous oscillatory instabilities in AC power systems with type‐3 and type‐4 wind turbine generators (WTGs) were recently registered at several wind farm areas. A number of works based on eigenvalue analysis and frequency domain approaches are carried out to analyse this new stability issue and more research is going on to analyse in detail the electric and control parameters that may affect this phenomenon. This study contributes analysing in detail the influence of system parameters on the subsynchronous oscillations (SSOs) in AC power systems with type‐4 WTGs. This study is based on a new approach for subsynchronous stability assessment which could also be used for analysing other types of SSOs (e.g. subsynchronous control interactions between doubly‐fed induction generators and series‐compensated networks) as well as supersynchronous oscillations. A representative example of weak AC grids with type‐4 WTGs is used to illustrate the contributions of the study. Results are validated with PSCAD/EMTDC time‐domain simulations.

A model of a storage tank with an immersed serpentine heat exchanger is described and validated against experimental data available from the literature. The tank is modelled one dimensionally using the multi-node approach corrected by an energy conservative reversion elimination algorithm to prevent inverse gradient solutions to occur. A one dimensional model in the flow direction is also used for the serpentine based on control volume techniques. The serpentine is discretized in equal sized control volumes and the energy equation is solved in each of them. The energy exchanged between the serpentine and the tank is then introduced as an internal heat source of the tank multi-node. With this model the behaviour of tanks with internal serpentines can be predicted minimising tuning parameters to be derived from previous experimental analysis of the tank. Additionally, by an appropriate formulation of the governing equations in the serpentine control volumes, it is possible to handle complex internal fluid phenomena as coupling of the tank within a thermosyphone cycle or two phase flow. In grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power stations, improving the life expectancy and long-term reliability of three-phase PV inverters is urgently needed to match the significantly higher lifetime of the PV modules. A key contribution toward such improvement is replacing the conventional electrolytic film capacitors by metallized polypropylene film ones. This paper presents a detailed evaluation of a conventional three-phase grid-connected PV inverter performance when replacing the electrolytic capacitor with a minimum value of metallized polypropylene film capacitor. Although the minimum dc bus capacitance leads to higher voltage ripples, such ripples were found to be within acceptable limits to operate the inverter satisfactorily. Simulation and experimental results are presented for a 5-kW grid-connected inverter prototype with a nominal dc voltage of 457 V to confirm the theoretical considerations. Peer Reviewed

In spite of the importance for human health, the molecular basis of prenatal ethanol exposure remains poorly understood, mainly to the difficulty of sample collection. Zebrafish is now emerging as a powerful organism for the modeling and the study of human diseases. In this work, we have assessed the sensitivity of specific subsets of neurons to ethanol exposure during embryogenesis and we have visualized the sensitive embryonic developmental periods for specific neuronal groups by the use of different transgenic zebrafish lines. In order to evaluate the teratogenic effects of acute ethanol exposure, we exposed zebrafish embryos to ethanol in a given time window and analyzed the effects in neurogenesis, neuronal differentiation and brain patterning. Zebrafish larvae exposed to ethanol displayed small eyes and/or a reduction of the body length, phenotypical features similar to the observed in children with prenatal exposure to ethanol. When neuronal populations were analyzed, we observed a clear reduction in the number of differentiated neurons in the spinal cord upon ethanol exposure. There was a decrease in the population of sensory neurons mainly due to a decrease in cell proliferation and subsequent apoptosis during neuronal differentiation, with no effect in motoneuron specification. Our investigation highlights that transient exposure to ethanol during early embryonic development affects neuronal differentiation although does not result in defects in early neurogenesis. These results establish the use of zebrafish embryos as an alternative research model to elucidate the molecular mechanism(s) of ethanol-induced developmental toxicity at very early stages of embryonic development.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type , Journal 2010 SpainPublisher:Springer Science and Business Media LLC Andrés Moreno-Estrada; Andrés Moreno-Estrada; Estel Aparicio-Prat; Elena Bosch; Anna Ramírez-Soriano; Francesc Calafell; Martin Sikora; Johannes Engelken;Abstract Background The human FOXI1 gene codes for a transcription factor involved in the physiology of the inner ear, testis, and kidney.
