(author);Abstract Thin layers of MoOx have been deposited by thermal evaporation followed by post-deposition annealing. The density of states distributions of the MoOx films were extracted deconvoluting the absorption spectra, measured by a photothermal deflection spectroscopy setup, including the small polaron contribution. Results revealed a sub-band defect distribution centered 1.1 eV below the conduction band; the amplitude of this distribution was found to increase with post-deposition annealing temperature and film thickness.

One of its main features is the functional split, i.e., dividing the instantiation of RAN baseband functions into different units over metro-network nodes. However, its optimal placement is non-trivial: it depends on the application requirements and on the expected traffic volume, whose daily variation highly impacts the total power consumption. Current optimization solutions fail to provide a placement solution capable of handling traffic fluctuations. In fact, the standard machine learning algorithms used in the literature for planning the network resources in advance result in an allocation that is inadequate to carry the actual traffic at all the time-slots. Hence, we must reserve an artificial buffer capacity in the nodes to ensure feasibility. Instead, our proposed method exploits a fine-grained two-step multi-task algorithm that predicts the mean and quantile traffic, making the artificial capacity no longer necessary. The subsequent placement uses mixed-integer linear programming and a heuristic. The former considers the expected traffic in the objective function (to estimate costs) and the quantile in the constraints (to enforce capacity limits). The heuristic combines the mean and quantile results to minimize the power and comply with the requirements. While using sufficiently large artificial buffers guarantees robustness with a mild power increase compared to the oracle, the fine-grained multi-task model improves the results, reducing the power consumption compared to the mean and meets all constraints. Kooij;The endeavour towards making power distribution systems (PDSs) smarter has made the interdependence on communication network indispensable. Further, prospective high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources in the form of distributed energy resources (DERs) has resulted in the necessity for smart controllers on such DERs. Inverters are employed for the purpose of DC to AC power conversion in the distribution network where the present standards require these inverters to be smart. In general, distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) calculate and send set points/operating points to these smart inverters using protocols such as smart energy profile (SEP) 2.0. Given the nature of sites at which such DERs are installed i.e., home area networks with a pool of IoT(Internet-of-Things) devices, the opportunity for a malicious actor to sabotage the operation is typically higher than that for a transmission system. National Electric Sector Cyber-security Organization Resource (NESCOR) has described several failure scenarios and impact analyses in case of cyber attacks on DERs. One such failure scenario concerns attacks on real/reactive power control commands. In this paper, it is demonstrated that physical invariant based security on the edge devices, i.e. smart controllers deployed in DER inverters, is an effective approach to minimize the impact of cyber attacks targeting reactive power control in DER inverters. The proposed defense is generic and can also be extended to attacks on real-power control. Negenborn;This paper investigates a novel routing problem of a multi-robot station in a manufacturing cell. In the existing literature, the objective is to minimize the cycle time or energy consumption separately. The routing problem considered in this paper aims to reduce the cycle time and energy consumption jointly for each robot while avoiding collisions between these robots. For this routing problem, we propose a new flexible time-space network model that allows us to reduce energy consumption while minimizing the cycle time. The corresponding optimization problem is Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP). For addressing its computational complexity, this paper designs a metaheuristic algorithm tailored to the studied problem and proposes an ϵ-constraint algorithm to study the trade-off between these two objectives. We conduct industrially relevant simulation experiments of case studies to show its effectiveness, in comparison to a conventional method, two state-of-the-art solvers, and two commonly-used metaheuristics. The results show that the proposed methodology can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% without compromising the cycle time. Meanwhile, the proposed algorithm can provide efficient solutions within a reasonable computation time. Note to Practitioners-This paper is motivated by the problem of improving energy efficiency when routing cooperative robots in a manufacturing station. In current approaches for routing multi-robot stations, the cycle time and energy consumption are minimized separately. This paper focuses on the movement of the robot end-effector and its connected joint and suggests a new approach to minimize these two objectives jointly by proposing a new mathematical model. The resulting planning problem is computationally intractable. A customized metaheuristic algorithm is thus designed for efficiently solving this planning problem. In this paper, a novel distributed cooperation voltage regulation method is proposed for future distribution networks. The proposed method can minimize the number of agents involved in the voltage regulation and it minimizes the change of required power for voltage regulation, which together minimizes the need for re-dispatching, i.e. the impact of voltage regulation on exchange of energy. Moreover, the proposed method performs online optimization, i.e the value of the decision variable is physically implemented as a controller set-point at each iteration which reduces the response time. The presented algorithm is benchmarked against ADMM and centralized optimization. The results show the voltage regulation effectiveness. This paper investigates a new energy-efficient planning problem for determining conflict-free paths of the AGVs in its transport roadmap. In this problem, the vehicle path and transport time in the roadmap are jointly optimized, based on a flexible time–space network (FTSN). We provide the mathematical problem formulation of the energy-efficient path planning problem. The resulting optimization problem is proved to be a non-convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming which is computationally intractable. We further propose a hybrid metaheuristic that integrates the genetic algorithm and estimation of the distribution algorithm to improve its computational efficiency. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the developed algorithm based on the FTSN framework, compared to the existing metaheuristics, the conventional path planning method, and a commercial solver. In China's rural areas, stone is a popular building material, but there are unprecedented demands to improve the life-cycle performance of stone buildings. It is essential to preserve the original architectural features while evolving towards a cleaner production and operation. This study implements a field survey in the Taihang Mountains of Hebei province. The improvement of stone extraction methods and the evolution of three stone wall styles are collected and developed. Thermal transmittances of three stone walls are measured and modeled. A cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment is conducted, and the results are compared to show their environmental performance in the embodiment and operation phases. Their life cycle inventories, including stone extraction, are developed. One representative building style sample is developed for the cooling and heating energy requirement simulation in the DesignBuilder. Based on the inventories, conducting life cycle impact assessment shows various environmental profiles in their whole life cycles. From the outcomes, the stone cladding wall (SCW) outperforms the other stone walls in both the embodiment and operation phases. However, its relatively high cost is a challenge for an individual house owner. Abstract This paper documents a thermo-fluid-dynamic mean-line model for the preliminary design of multistage axial turbines with blade cooling applicable to supercritical CO2 turbines. Given the working fluid and coolant inlet thermodynamic conditions, blade geometry, number of stages and load criterion, the model computes the stage-by-stage design along with the cooling requirement and ultimately provides an estimate of turbine efficiency via a semi-empirical loss model. Different cooling modes are available and can be selected by the user (stand-alone or combination): convective cooling, film cooling, and thermal barrier coating. The model is applied to attain the preliminary aero-thermal design of the 600 MW cooled axial supercritical CO2 turbine of the Allam cycle. Results show that a load coefficient varying from 3 to 1 throughout the machine, and a reaction degree ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 lead to the maximum total-to-static turbine efficiency of about 85%. Consequently, as opposed to uncooled CO2 turbines, a repeated stage configuration is an unsuited design choice for cooled sCO2 machines. Moreover, the study highlights that film cooling is considerably less effective compared to conventional gas turbines, while increasing the number of stages from 5 to 6 and adopting higher rotational speeds leads to an increased efficiency.

Building and programming tiny battery-free energy harvesting embedded computer systems is hard for the average maker because of the lack of tools, hard to comprehend programming models, and frequent power failures. With the high ecologic cost of equipping the next trillion embedded devices with batteries, it is critical to equip the makers, hobbyists, and novice embedded systems programmers with easy-to-use tools supporting battery-free energy harvesting application development. This way, makers can create untethered embedded systems that are not plugged into the wall, the desktop, or even a battery, providing numerous new applications and allowing for a more sustainable vision of ubiquitous computing. In this paper, we present BFree, a system that makes it possible for makers, hobbyists, and novice embedded programmers to develop battery-free applications using Python programming language and widely available hobbyist maker platforms. BFree provides energy harvesting hardware and a power failure resilient version of Python, with durable libraries that enable common coding practice and off the shelf sensors. We develop demonstration applications, benchmark BFree against battery-powered approaches, and evaluate our system in a user study. This work enables makers to engage with a future of ubiquitous computing that is useful, long-term, and environmentally responsible.

(author);Abstract Thin layers of MoOx have been deposited by thermal evaporation followed by post-deposition annealing. The density of states distributions of the MoOx films were extracted deconvoluting the absorption spectra, measured by a photothermal deflection spectroscopy setup, including the small polaron contribution. Results revealed a sub-band defect distribution centered 1.1 eV below the conduction band; the amplitude of this distribution was found to increase with post-deposition annealing temperature and film thickness.

One of its main features is the functional split, i.e., dividing the instantiation of RAN baseband functions into different units over metro-network nodes. However, its optimal placement is non-trivial: it depends on the application requirements and on the expected traffic volume, whose daily variation highly impacts the total power consumption. Current optimization solutions fail to provide a placement solution capable of handling traffic fluctuations. In fact, the standard machine learning algorithms used in the literature for planning the network resources in advance result in an allocation that is inadequate to carry the actual traffic at all the time-slots. Hence, we must reserve an artificial buffer capacity in the nodes to ensure feasibility. Instead, our proposed method exploits a fine-grained two-step multi-task algorithm that predicts the mean and quantile traffic, making the artificial capacity no longer necessary. The subsequent placement uses mixed-integer linear programming and a heuristic. The former considers the expected traffic in the objective function (to estimate costs) and the quantile in the constraints (to enforce capacity limits). The heuristic combines the mean and quantile results to minimize the power and comply with the requirements. While using sufficiently large artificial buffers guarantees robustness with a mild power increase compared to the oracle, the fine-grained multi-task model improves the results, reducing the power consumption compared to the mean and meets all constraints. Kooij;The endeavour towards making power distribution systems (PDSs) smarter has made the interdependence on communication network indispensable. Further, prospective high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources in the form of distributed energy resources (DERs) has resulted in the necessity for smart controllers on such DERs. Inverters are employed for the purpose of DC to AC power conversion in the distribution network where the present standards require these inverters to be smart. In general, distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) calculate and send set points/operating points to these smart inverters using protocols such as smart energy profile (SEP) 2.0. Given the nature of sites at which such DERs are installed i.e., home area networks with a pool of IoT(Internet-of-Things) devices, the opportunity for a malicious actor to sabotage the operation is typically higher than that for a transmission system. National Electric Sector Cyber-security Organization Resource (NESCOR) has described several failure scenarios and impact analyses in case of cyber attacks on DERs. One such failure scenario concerns attacks on real/reactive power control commands. In this paper, it is demonstrated that physical invariant based security on the edge devices, i.e. smart controllers deployed in DER inverters, is an effective approach to minimize the impact of cyber attacks targeting reactive power control in DER inverters. The proposed defense is generic and can also be extended to attacks on real-power control. Negenborn;This paper investigates a novel routing problem of a multi-robot station in a manufacturing cell. In the existing literature, the objective is to minimize the cycle time or energy consumption separately. The routing problem considered in this paper aims to reduce the cycle time and energy consumption jointly for each robot while avoiding collisions between these robots. For this routing problem, we propose a new flexible time-space network model that allows us to reduce energy consumption while minimizing the cycle time. The corresponding optimization problem is Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP). For addressing its computational complexity, this paper designs a metaheuristic algorithm tailored to the studied problem and proposes an ϵ-constraint algorithm to study the trade-off between these two objectives. We conduct industrially relevant simulation experiments of case studies to show its effectiveness, in comparison to a conventional method, two state-of-the-art solvers, and two commonly-used metaheuristics. The results show that the proposed methodology can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% without compromising the cycle time. Meanwhile, the proposed algorithm can provide efficient solutions within a reasonable computation time. Note to Practitioners-This paper is motivated by the problem of improving energy efficiency when routing cooperative robots in a manufacturing station. In current approaches for routing multi-robot stations, the cycle time and energy consumption are minimized separately. This paper focuses on the movement of the robot end-effector and its connected joint and suggests a new approach to minimize these two objectives jointly by proposing a new mathematical model. The resulting planning problem is computationally intractable. A customized metaheuristic algorithm is thus designed for efficiently solving this planning problem. In this paper, a novel distributed cooperation voltage regulation method is proposed for future distribution networks. The proposed method can minimize the number of agents involved in the voltage regulation and it minimizes the change of required power for voltage regulation, which together minimizes the need for re-dispatching, i.e. the impact of voltage regulation on exchange of energy. Moreover, the proposed method performs online optimization, i.e the value of the decision variable is physically implemented as a controller set-point at each iteration which reduces the response time. The presented algorithm is benchmarked against ADMM and centralized optimization. The results show the voltage regulation effectiveness. This paper investigates a new energy-efficient planning problem for determining conflict-free paths of the AGVs in its transport roadmap. In this problem, the vehicle path and transport time in the roadmap are jointly optimized, based on a flexible time–space network (FTSN). We provide the mathematical problem formulation of the energy-efficient path planning problem. The resulting optimization problem is proved to be a non-convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming which is computationally intractable. We further propose a hybrid metaheuristic that integrates the genetic algorithm and estimation of the distribution algorithm to improve its computational efficiency. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the developed algorithm based on the FTSN framework, compared to the existing metaheuristics, the conventional path planning method, and a commercial solver. In China's rural areas, stone is a popular building material, but there are unprecedented demands to improve the life-cycle performance of stone buildings. It is essential to preserve the original architectural features while evolving towards a cleaner production and operation. This study implements a field survey in the Taihang Mountains of Hebei province. The improvement of stone extraction methods and the evolution of three stone wall styles are collected and developed. Thermal transmittances of three stone walls are measured and modeled. A cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment is conducted, and the results are compared to show their environmental performance in the embodiment and operation phases. Their life cycle inventories, including stone extraction, are developed. One representative building style sample is developed for the cooling and heating energy requirement simulation in the DesignBuilder. Based on the inventories, conducting life cycle impact assessment shows various environmental profiles in their whole life cycles. From the outcomes, the stone cladding wall (SCW) outperforms the other stone walls in both the embodiment and operation phases. However, its relatively high cost is a challenge for an individual house owner. Abstract This paper documents a thermo-fluid-dynamic mean-line model for the preliminary design of multistage axial turbines with blade cooling applicable to supercritical CO2 turbines. Given the working fluid and coolant inlet thermodynamic conditions, blade geometry, number of stages and load criterion, the model computes the stage-by-stage design along with the cooling requirement and ultimately provides an estimate of turbine efficiency via a semi-empirical loss model. Different cooling modes are available and can be selected by the user (stand-alone or combination): convective cooling, film cooling, and thermal barrier coating. The model is applied to attain the preliminary aero-thermal design of the 600 MW cooled axial supercritical CO2 turbine of the Allam cycle. Results show that a load coefficient varying from 3 to 1 throughout the machine, and a reaction degree ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 lead to the maximum total-to-static turbine efficiency of about 85%. Consequently, as opposed to uncooled CO2 turbines, a repeated stage configuration is an unsuited design choice for cooled sCO2 machines. Moreover, the study highlights that film cooling is considerably less effective compared to conventional gas turbines, while increasing the number of stages from 5 to 6 and adopting higher rotational speeds leads to an increased efficiency.

Building and programming tiny battery-free energy harvesting embedded computer systems is hard for the average maker because of the lack of tools, hard to comprehend programming models, and frequent power failures. With the high ecologic cost of equipping the next trillion embedded devices with batteries, it is critical to equip the makers, hobbyists, and novice embedded systems programmers with easy-to-use tools supporting battery-free energy harvesting application development. This way, makers can create untethered embedded systems that are not plugged into the wall, the desktop, or even a battery, providing numerous new applications and allowing for a more sustainable vision of ubiquitous computing. In this paper, we present BFree, a system that makes it possible for makers, hobbyists, and novice embedded programmers to develop battery-free applications using Python programming language and widely available hobbyist maker platforms. BFree provides energy harvesting hardware and a power failure resilient version of Python, with durable libraries that enable common coding practice and off the shelf sensors. We develop demonstration applications, benchmark BFree against battery-powered approaches, and evaluate our system in a user study. This work enables makers to engage with a future of ubiquitous computing that is useful, long-term, and environmentally responsible.
