    De Nederlandse overheid streeft ernaar om tegen 2050 volledig circulair te zijn, zoals vastgelegd in het Rijksbrede programma Circulaire Economie. Dit moet leiden tot een aanzienlijke reductie in CO2-uitstoot en materiaalgebruik. Het is echter onduidelijk hoe de transitie naar een circulaire economie precies verloopt. Daarom heeft het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL) een werkprogramma opgezet om deze transitie te monitoren en beleidsinformatie te verstrekken. Dit rapport, als onderdeel van de Productgroep Analyse Hernieuwbare Energie Technologieën, onderzoekt de staat van de transitie naar circulaire zonnepanelen, windturbines en autobatterijen in Nederland. Uitgevoerd in samenwerking met de Universiteit Leiden en de Technische Universiteit Delft, biedt het rapport inzichten vanuit het Missie-specifieke Innovatiesysteem (MIS) raamwerk. Het identificeert verschillende oplossingsrichtingen, barrières en beleidsinterventies om de transitie te versnellen. De bevindingen zullen worden gebruikt als input voor de Integrale CE Rapportage 2025.

    This report describes the results of the analyses underlying the vision “Green Metropolitan Region 2120”: a spatial vision for the future Green Metropolitan Region Arnhem-Nijmegen that is based on the carrying capacity and characteristics of the natural system. The literature study describes future developments for the themes climate change, river regime, nature, agriculture, housing, mobility, energy and economy. A landscape analysis has provided insight into the characteristics of the soil and water system in the region. The results of this analysis have been bundled in a map describing the main landscape types in the region. The map is accompanied by a SWOT analysis that summarizes the most important strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the soil and water system of the various landscape types. Deze rapportage beschrijft de resultaten van de analyses die ten grondslag liggen aan de visie ‘Groene Metropoolregio 2120’: een ruimtelijk toekomstbeeld voor de Groene Metropoolregio Arnhem-Nijmegen, gebaseerd op de draagkracht en kenmerken van het natuurlijke systeem. De literatuurstudie behandelt toekomstige ontwikkelingen voor de thema’s klimaatverandering, rivierregime, natuur, landbouw, wonen, mobiliteit, energie en economie. Middels een landschapsanalyse is inzicht verkregen in de karakteristieken van bodem, ondergrond en watersysteem in de regio. De resultaten hiervan zijn gebundeld in een landschappelijke typering van de regio met daarbij een SWOT-analyse die de belangrijkste huidige kwaliteiten, knelpunten, kansen en risico’s van het bodem- en watersysteem van de onderscheiden deelgebieden samenvat.

    Er wordt al lange tijd gewerkt aan de verduurzaming van de veehouderijsectoren. In dit rapport wordt een overzicht gegeven van maatregelen en stimulansen die invloed hebben gehad op de verduurzaming van de melkveehouderij, varkenshouderij en pluimveehouderij in de periode van 1980 tot 2020. Bij verduurzaming gaat het in dit rapport met name om de thema’s milieu (stikstof, fosfaat), klimaat, dierenwelzijn en diergezondheid.

    This study aims to identify opportunities and barriers in developing and implementing Food Shopping Support Systems (FSSS) for healthier and more sustainable choices, given the growing consumer demand and persistent societal problems related to food. The study examined the social and technical value of FSSS in an early development stage through one-on-one expert interviews (n=20) and consumer focus groups (4 groups, n=19).

Hiervoor zijn 30 stammen (20 homokaryons en 10 kruisingen) binnen de soort C. subvermispora onderzocht op hun vermogen om tarwestro en ingekuild bermgras selectief van hemicellulose en lignine te ontdoen. Op basis van de resultaten van Werkpakket 1 blijken C. subvermispora stammen MES15023 (monokaryon), MES15032 (monokaryon) en MES14706 (dikaryon) het meest selectief in de afbraak van lignine in zowel tarwestro als bermgras en is het resultaat van doorgroeien van de substraten met deze stammen een relatieve verrijking in cellulose. In Werkpakket 3 (eveneens uitgevoerd door WUR Plant Breeding) zijn verschillende typen biomassa voorbehandeld met de uit Werkpakket 1 als beste naar voren komende stammen. Er werd daarbij gewerkt met twee mogelijke toepassingen van het op te leveren behandelde materiaal. Deze toepassingen waren biogasproductie (op basis van tarwestro) en productie van vezelmateriaal voor de papier industrie (op basis van Miscanthus, Natuurgras, Lisdodde, Vlaslemen en Hennepscheven). De bovengenoemde materialen werden doorgroeid met 3 C. subvermispora stammen; MES15032 als beste monokaryon in WP1, MES14706 als beste dikaryon in WP1 en MES13094 als referentie uit de eerdere biogas testen. Het met schimmel doorgroeide materiaal werd op verschillende momenten tijdens de kolonisatie door de schimmels bemonsterd en het bemonsterde materiaal werd geanalyseerd op vezelsamenstelling. Stro substraat raakte (evenals in Werkpakket 1, goed doorgroeid met alle drie de schimmelstammen. Ook Miscanthus, vlaslemen en hennepscheven raakten goed doorgroeid met beide geteste schimmelstammen. In tegenstelling tot tarwestro en miscanthus, raakte het natuurgras substraat slechts met moeite doorgroeid. Lisdodde raakte nauwelijks gekoloniseerd door beide geteste schimmelstammen. Uitgaande van de selectieve verrijking van substraten met cellulose (door afbraak van hemicellulose en lignine) bleek vooral na 8 weken incubatie het relatieve gehalte aan cellulose in het tarwestro sterk omhoog te zijn gegaan, ten koste van 19% verlies aan droge stof. Na 12 weken was het relatieve gehalte aan cellulose nog sterker gestegen, maar dit ging ten koste van 35% van de droge stof. In Miscanthus steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine van 4.4 bij aanvang van de schimmelincubatie gestaag naar 9.8 na 19 weken incubatie met stam MES 15032, maar dit ging ten koste van 20% van de droge stof. Stam MES14706 gaf minder goede resultaten te zien (cellulose/lignine verhouding 6.4 na 19 weken incubatie). Vlaslemen , natuurgras en hennepscheven werden uitsluitend geanalyseerd na 12 weken doorgroeiing met de schimmels. In geval van vlaslemen steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine van 2.1 bij aanvang naar 6.6 na 12 weken incubatie met stam MES15032. Dit ging echter ten koste van 24% van de droge stof. Bij stam MES14706 steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine slechts naar een waarde 3.4 na 12 weken incubatie. In natuurgras steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine niet erg sterk na 12 weken incubatie met de schimmels, maar er verdween wel ongeveer 44% (MES14706) en 49% (MES15032) van de droge stof. In natuurgras bleek de afbraak niet erg selectief; zowel cellulose, hemicellulose als lignine werden allemaal afgebroken. In geval van hennepscheven steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine bijzonder sterk na 12 weken incubatie met MES15032; van 3.6 bij aanvang naar 18.5 na 12 weken. Dit ging echter ten koste van 50% van de droge stof. Bij incubatie met MES14706 steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine na 12 weken incubatie naar 7.1 en dit ging ten koste van 37% van de droge stof. Vanwege de slechte kolonisatie van lisdodde door de beide schimmels is besloten om dit substraat niet verder te analyseren. Binnen Werkpakket 5 zijn door CNC Grondstoffen een reeks aan experimenten uitgevoerd gericht op het opschalen van de teelt van C. subvermispora. In de commerciele praktijk wordt een substraat bedoeld voor schimmelkweek gepasteuriseerd door het substraat door eigen microbiele activiteit te laten opwarmen tot waarden rond 60-65oC. De door CNC Grondstoffen uitgevoerde experimenten hebben echter geen van allen succes gehad. In de solid state fermentor bleek het niet mogelijk om de gewenste temperaturen te bereiken. In een experiment waarin gebruik is gemaakt van commercieel beschikbaar substraat op basis van tarwestro bleek echter dat Ceriporiopsis subvermispora niet in staat bleek om dat substraat te koloniseren (terwijl schimmels zoals Pleurotus ostreatus (de oesterzwam) en Lentinula edodes (shiitake) daar in de commerciële praktijk geen enkel probleem mee hebben. Mogelijk heeft C. subvermispora een probleem met de hoge pH van het commerciële substraat. Pogingen om een selectief substraat te maken door tarwestro te verzuren met citroenzuur waren echter eveneens niet succesvol. Het is duidelijk dat de opschaling van het systeem nog enig werk behoeft.

    Twee jaar geleden schetste Wageningen University & Research (WUR) een positief toekomstscenario: Nederland 2120 (Baptist et al., 2019). In dat verhaal schetsen we hoe Nederland een gidsland kan zijn voor een groene toekomst. Een land dat vooroploopt in de transitie naar een duurzame samenleving. Die boodschap van hoop bleek enorm aan te slaan. In dit verhaal zoomen we verder in: wat betekent zo’n scenario voor de stad van de toekomst? We nemen Arnhem als voorbeeld, om te laten zien hoe de stedelijke omgeving er over honderd jaar uit zou kunnen zien. Kúnnen, ja, want dit toekomstbeeld is niet in beton gegoten. We schetsen geen blauwdruk, maar een denkrichting. We willen een inspirerend, gedurfd én realistisch verhaal vertellen. Het natuurlijke systeem en het welzijn van de mens zijn daarbij ons uitgangspunt.

    The Dutch climate agreement comprises a target for agricultural soils to sequester an additional 0.4-0.6 Mton CO2 per year in 2030. In this study the technical potential for carbon sequestration in Dutch agricultural soils has been determined using the soil carbon model RothC at national scale. The total potential for the combination of measures is about 0,9 Mton CO2 per year compared to the baseline of 2017. More permanent grassland, cover crops and an increased share of cereals in the rotation are the measures that contribute most. More carbon in the soil can also result in an increased N2O emission due to the addition of easily decomposable organic matter. A literature study showed that most measures have a net emission reduction, but the effect depends on the current crop and soil management. This study also assessed carbon sequestration in biomass in landscape elements and agroforestry. An increase in the area of landscape elements to 1% of the agricultural area results in a sequestration rate of 0.4 Mton CO2/year for a period of 15 years. For agroforestry the potential is estimated at 0.1 Mton CO2/year if the Masterplan Agroforestry (25 000 ha) will be implemented. In het Nederlandse Klimaatakkoord is voor landbouwbodems een doelstelling van 0,4-0,6 Mton extra CO2-vastlegging per jaar in 2030 vastgesteld. In deze studie is de technische potentie voor koolstofvastlegging in Nederlandse landbouwbodems bepaald op basis van berekeningen met het RothC-model. De potentie voor de combinatie van maatregelen is berekend op 0,9 Mton CO2 per jaar ten opzichte van 2017. De maatregelen die het meest bijdragen, zijn meer blijvend grasland, vanggewassen/groenbemesters en het verhogen van het aandeel rustgewassen. Meer organische stof kan echter ook leiden tot een toename van N2O-emissie door het toevoegen van gemakkelijk afbreekbare organische stof. Een literatuurstudie laat zien dat de meeste maatregelen een netto positief effect hebben op reductie van broeikasgasemissies, maar afhankelijk is van het huidige gewas- en bodembeheer. Voor C-vastlegging in biomassa is ook gekeken naar landschapselementen en agroforestry. Een uitbreiding van het areaal landschapselementen naar 1% van het landbouwareaal resulteert in een vastlegging van 0,4 Mton CO2/jaar voor een periode van vijftien jaar. Het uitvoeren van het Masterplan Agroforestry (25.000 ha) resulteert in een jaarlijkse vastlegging van ongeveer 0,1 Mton CO2/jaar.

    De Nederlandse overheid streeft ernaar om tegen 2050 volledig circulair te zijn, zoals vastgelegd in het Rijksbrede programma Circulaire Economie. Dit moet leiden tot een aanzienlijke reductie in CO2-uitstoot en materiaalgebruik. Het is echter onduidelijk hoe de transitie naar een circulaire economie precies verloopt. Daarom heeft het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL) een werkprogramma opgezet om deze transitie te monitoren en beleidsinformatie te verstrekken. Dit rapport, als onderdeel van de Productgroep Analyse Hernieuwbare Energie Technologieën, onderzoekt de staat van de transitie naar circulaire zonnepanelen, windturbines en autobatterijen in Nederland. Uitgevoerd in samenwerking met de Universiteit Leiden en de Technische Universiteit Delft, biedt het rapport inzichten vanuit het Missie-specifieke Innovatiesysteem (MIS) raamwerk. Het identificeert verschillende oplossingsrichtingen, barrières en beleidsinterventies om de transitie te versnellen. De bevindingen zullen worden gebruikt als input voor de Integrale CE Rapportage 2025.

    This report describes the results of the analyses underlying the vision “Green Metropolitan Region 2120”: a spatial vision for the future Green Metropolitan Region Arnhem-Nijmegen that is based on the carrying capacity and characteristics of the natural system. The literature study describes future developments for the themes climate change, river regime, nature, agriculture, housing, mobility, energy and economy. A landscape analysis has provided insight into the characteristics of the soil and water system in the region. The results of this analysis have been bundled in a map describing the main landscape types in the region. The map is accompanied by a SWOT analysis that summarizes the most important strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the soil and water system of the various landscape types. Deze rapportage beschrijft de resultaten van de analyses die ten grondslag liggen aan de visie ‘Groene Metropoolregio 2120’: een ruimtelijk toekomstbeeld voor de Groene Metropoolregio Arnhem-Nijmegen, gebaseerd op de draagkracht en kenmerken van het natuurlijke systeem. De literatuurstudie behandelt toekomstige ontwikkelingen voor de thema’s klimaatverandering, rivierregime, natuur, landbouw, wonen, mobiliteit, energie en economie. Middels een landschapsanalyse is inzicht verkregen in de karakteristieken van bodem, ondergrond en watersysteem in de regio. De resultaten hiervan zijn gebundeld in een landschappelijke typering van de regio met daarbij een SWOT-analyse die de belangrijkste huidige kwaliteiten, knelpunten, kansen en risico’s van het bodem- en watersysteem van de onderscheiden deelgebieden samenvat.

Bij verduurzaming gaat het in dit rapport met name om de thema’s milieu (stikstof, fosfaat), klimaat, dierenwelzijn en diergezondheid.

    This study aims to identify opportunities and barriers in developing and implementing Food Shopping Support Systems (FSSS) for healthier and more sustainable choices, given the growing consumer demand and persistent societal problems related to food. The study examined the social and technical value of FSSS in an early development stage through one-on-one expert interviews (n=20) and consumer focus groups (4 groups, n=19).

    In Werkpakket 1 (uitgevoerd door WUR Plant Breeding) is gezocht naar de meest optimale stammen van Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. Hiervoor zijn 30 stammen (20 homokaryons en 10 kruisingen) binnen de soort C. subvermispora onderzocht op hun vermogen om tarwestro en ingekuild bermgras selectief van hemicellulose en lignine te ontdoen. Op basis van de resultaten van Werkpakket 1 blijken C. subvermispora stammen MES15023 (monokaryon), MES15032 (monokaryon) en MES14706 (dikaryon) het meest selectief in de afbraak van lignine in zowel tarwestro als bermgras en is het resultaat van doorgroeien van de substraten met deze stammen een relatieve verrijking in cellulose. In Werkpakket 3 (eveneens uitgevoerd door WUR Plant Breeding) zijn verschillende typen biomassa voorbehandeld met de uit Werkpakket 1 als beste naar voren komende stammen. Er werd daarbij gewerkt met twee mogelijke toepassingen van het op te leveren behandelde materiaal. Deze toepassingen waren biogasproductie (op basis van tarwestro) en productie van vezelmateriaal voor de papier industrie (op basis van Miscanthus, Natuurgras, Lisdodde, Vlaslemen en Hennepscheven). De bovengenoemde materialen werden doorgroeid met 3 C. subvermispora stammen; MES15032 als beste monokaryon in WP1, MES14706 als beste dikaryon in WP1 en MES13094 als referentie uit de eerdere biogas testen. Het met schimmel doorgroeide materiaal werd op verschillende momenten tijdens de kolonisatie door de schimmels bemonsterd en het bemonsterde materiaal werd geanalyseerd op vezelsamenstelling. Stro substraat raakte (evenals in Werkpakket 1, goed doorgroeid met alle drie de schimmelstammen. Ook Miscanthus, vlaslemen en hennepscheven raakten goed doorgroeid met beide geteste schimmelstammen. In tegenstelling tot tarwestro en miscanthus, raakte het natuurgras substraat slechts met moeite doorgroeid. Lisdodde raakte nauwelijks gekoloniseerd door beide geteste schimmelstammen. Uitgaande van de selectieve verrijking van substraten met cellulose (door afbraak van hemicellulose en lignine) bleek vooral na 8 weken incubatie het relatieve gehalte aan cellulose in het tarwestro sterk omhoog te zijn gegaan, ten koste van 19% verlies aan droge stof. Na 12 weken was het relatieve gehalte aan cellulose nog sterker gestegen, maar dit ging ten koste van 35% van de droge stof. In Miscanthus steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine van 4.4 bij aanvang van de schimmelincubatie gestaag naar 9.8 na 19 weken incubatie met stam MES 15032, maar dit ging ten koste van 20% van de droge stof. Stam MES14706 gaf minder goede resultaten te zien (cellulose/lignine verhouding 6.4 na 19 weken incubatie). Vlaslemen , natuurgras en hennepscheven werden uitsluitend geanalyseerd na 12 weken doorgroeiing met de schimmels. In geval van vlaslemen steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine van 2.1 bij aanvang naar 6.6 na 12 weken incubatie met stam MES15032. Dit ging echter ten koste van 24% van de droge stof. Bij stam MES14706 steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine slechts naar een waarde 3.4 na 12 weken incubatie. In natuurgras steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine niet erg sterk na 12 weken incubatie met de schimmels, maar er verdween wel ongeveer 44% (MES14706) en 49% (MES15032) van de droge stof. In natuurgras bleek de afbraak niet erg selectief; zowel cellulose, hemicellulose als lignine werden allemaal afgebroken. In geval van hennepscheven steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine bijzonder sterk na 12 weken incubatie met MES15032; van 3.6 bij aanvang naar 18.5 na 12 weken. Dit ging echter ten koste van 50% van de droge stof. Bij incubatie met MES14706 steeg de verhouding cellulose/lignine na 12 weken incubatie naar 7.1 en dit ging ten koste van 37% van de droge stof. Vanwege de slechte kolonisatie van lisdodde door de beide schimmels is besloten om dit substraat niet verder te analyseren. Binnen Werkpakket 5 zijn door CNC Grondstoffen een reeks aan experimenten uitgevoerd gericht op het opschalen van de teelt van C. subvermispora. In de commerciele praktijk wordt een substraat bedoeld voor schimmelkweek gepasteuriseerd door het substraat door eigen microbiele activiteit te laten opwarmen tot waarden rond 60-65oC. De door CNC Grondstoffen uitgevoerde experimenten hebben echter geen van allen succes gehad. In de solid state fermentor bleek het niet mogelijk om de gewenste temperaturen te bereiken. In een experiment waarin gebruik is gemaakt van commercieel beschikbaar substraat op basis van tarwestro bleek echter dat Ceriporiopsis subvermispora niet in staat bleek om dat substraat te koloniseren (terwijl schimmels zoals Pleurotus ostreatus (de oesterzwam) en Lentinula edodes (shiitake) daar in de commerciële praktijk geen enkel probleem mee hebben. Mogelijk heeft C. subvermispora een probleem met de hoge pH van het commerciële substraat. Pogingen om een selectief substraat te maken door tarwestro te verzuren met citroenzuur waren echter eveneens niet succesvol. Het is duidelijk dat de opschaling van het systeem nog enig werk behoeft.

    Twee jaar geleden schetste Wageningen University & Research (WUR) een positief toekomstscenario: Nederland 2120 (Baptist et al., 2019). In dat verhaal schetsen we hoe Nederland een gidsland kan zijn voor een groene toekomst. Een land dat vooroploopt in de transitie naar een duurzame samenleving. Die boodschap van hoop bleek enorm aan te slaan. In dit verhaal zoomen we verder in: wat betekent zo’n scenario voor de stad van de toekomst? We nemen Arnhem als voorbeeld, om te laten zien hoe de stedelijke omgeving er over honderd jaar uit zou kunnen zien. Kúnnen, ja, want dit toekomstbeeld is niet in beton gegoten. We schetsen geen blauwdruk, maar een denkrichting. We willen een inspirerend, gedurfd én realistisch verhaal vertellen. Het natuurlijke systeem en het welzijn van de mens zijn daarbij ons uitgangspunt.

    The Dutch climate agreement comprises a target for agricultural soils to sequester an additional 0.4-0.6 Mton CO2 per year in 2030. In this study the technical potential for carbon sequestration in Dutch agricultural soils has been determined using the soil carbon model RothC at national scale. The total potential for the combination of measures is about 0,9 Mton CO2 per year compared to the baseline of 2017. More permanent grassland, cover crops and an increased share of cereals in the rotation are the measures that contribute most. More carbon in the soil can also result in an increased N2O emission due to the addition of easily decomposable organic matter. A literature study showed that most measures have a net emission reduction, but the effect depends on the current crop and soil management. This study also assessed carbon sequestration in biomass in landscape elements and agroforestry. An increase in the area of landscape elements to 1% of the agricultural area results in a sequestration rate of 0.4 Mton CO2/year for a period of 15 years. For agroforestry the potential is estimated at 0.1 Mton CO2/year if the Masterplan Agroforestry (25 000 ha) will be implemented. In het Nederlandse Klimaatakkoord is voor landbouwbodems een doelstelling van 0,4-0,6 Mton extra CO2-vastlegging per jaar in 2030 vastgesteld. In deze studie is de technische potentie voor koolstofvastlegging in Nederlandse landbouwbodems bepaald op basis van berekeningen met het RothC-model. De potentie voor de combinatie van maatregelen is berekend op 0,9 Mton CO2 per jaar ten opzichte van 2017. De maatregelen die het meest bijdragen, zijn meer blijvend grasland, vanggewassen/groenbemesters en het verhogen van het aandeel rustgewassen. Meer organische stof kan echter ook leiden tot een toename van N2O-emissie door het toevoegen van gemakkelijk afbreekbare organische stof. Een literatuurstudie laat zien dat de meeste maatregelen een netto positief effect hebben op reductie van broeikasgasemissies, maar afhankelijk is van het huidige gewas- en bodembeheer. Voor C-vastlegging in biomassa is ook gekeken naar landschapselementen en agroforestry. Een uitbreiding van het areaal landschapselementen naar 1% van het landbouwareaal resulteert in een vastlegging van 0,4 Mton CO2/jaar voor een periode van vijftien jaar. Het uitvoeren van het Masterplan Agroforestry (25.000 ha) resulteert in een jaarlijkse vastlegging van ongeveer 0,1 Mton CO2/jaar.
