description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2018Publisher:FapUNIFESP (SciELO) Authors: Martin, Andrey Minin;RESUMO Este artigo propõe uma discussão sobre a dinâmica da produção energética nacional e suas possibilidades no desenvolvimento hidrelétrico no interior do Brasil, tendo como suporte referencial a instalação do Complexo Hidrelétrico Urubupungá.

What if we continue living within our safe anthropocen-tric boundaries? What if we ignore the question of when too much is too much? Margaret Atwood’s “speculative fiction” presents no new worlds, as Atwood’s world resembles our own; her novels present, on the other hand, what-if realities. By extrapolating trends, Oryx and Crake poses the afore-mentioned questions within Modernity’s framework. Atwood’s novel revisits key concepts such as time and subjectivity and brings progression to a halt. What may the wish to stop time, our human condition, result in, after all? Modernity and its concepts are under scrutiny in a novel in which climate change and nature seem to have been surpassed. The present paper aims, therefore, at investigating what this “us without a world” story, which becomes a “world without us” one, can tell us about the pursuits of Modernity and their repercussions: that is, ecological awareness and the good Anthropocene.

The main objective of this study was to assess the extent to which accounting policies of social disclosure adopted by certain financial institutions are influenced by disclosure practices adopted by their larger peers. Thus, it was based on presumptions of the Institutional Theory [Meyer and Rowan (1977), DiMaggio and Powell (1983), and Zulker Tolbert (1999)], mainly considering the concept of mimetic isomorphism. We examined 24 social audits of the six largest brazilian banks, during the period between 2001 and 2005. The research provides evidences of a possible isomorphic process in the adoption of social and environmental disclosure policies among the organizations studied. After all, it was shown that smaller banks tend to copy models and disclosure practices adopted by larger banks. The results confirm the hypothesis that when organizations are faced with uncertainties and significant threats to its continuity, tend to copy structures and models adopted by others who are perceived as rational and efficient in the environment which they operate. This behavior was consistent with the precepts of institutional theory.

The present state of the development of an operative storm surge prediction system in Germany is described. It is based on numerical models of the atmosphere and the North Sea. First simulations of the storm surge on Jan. 3, 1976 yield the result, that the observed water levels along the North Sea coasts can be recalculated quite well using a meteorological input derived from observations, Whereas the forecasted water levels, using the predicted geostrophic winds of the atmospheric model, are too low since the pressure gradients are too weak. A series of storm surge recalculations with observed and predicted meteorological data shall answer the question, wether parameter fits, applied to the predicted wind stress, lead to satisfying results, suitable for practical applications.

Nevertheless, concerning SMEs’ innovation capabilities from traditional sectors, benchmarking applications have been scarce. This article uses a predefined metric named the “Potential Innovation Index (PII)”, based on internal practices of the firms to compare innovation capabilities of two groups of similar SMEs from 2 different geographical, cultural and social contexts. Results were used to analyze similarities and differences, strengths and weaknesses of the groups. Obtained results confirm the difficulties to innovate of this type firms, no matters the sector or country, as over 55% of the companies studied were evaluated as having a low innovative performance. However, regarding the index’s constitutive practices, significant differences were found. Which leads to infer that innovation support strategies to enhance innovation must be adapted to the local context and culture.

Thus, instead of reducing inequalities in the world system, international institutions reproduce a prevalent logic of material and subjective discrimination based on a colonialist ideology marked by violence, which is communicated in a certain way so that it can justify its importance and legitimacy. The colonial violence is perpetuated under the form of symbolic violence manifested in the language that imposes a universal meaning and systemic violence that manifests itself in the ‘perfect’ functioning of the world economic and political system as the ultimate form of development. One of the perverse and subtle dimensions of this violence is observed in the emergence of the International Environmental Law in terms of metanarratives that exclude minorities and perceptions other than the ones propagated by international institutions. The main objective of this article is to identify the dynamics in the formation of environmental treaties leading to standard results of discursive practices that feed the process of dependence and legitimation marked by colonial ruling and structural violence. The methodological approach relies on the critical theory tenets to expose the non-emancipatory features of current International Environmental Law. For that matter, this article applies the socio-legal approach to environmental treaties that consists of the analysis of text (law), subtext (the moral aspects of the law – deep or implicit meanings), and context (the undeniable connection between law and reality) in the search of empirical evidence. This task is performed using the computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CADQAS) called ATLAS.ti.

Gayó; Andone Gurruchaga; Sergio A. Estay; Calogero M. Santoro;Different Andean societies underwent processes of expansion and collapse during propitious or adverse climate conditions, resource boost or depletion along with population variations. Previous studies have emphasized that demographic collapses of polities in the Central Andes Area were triggered by warfare and the negative impacts of fluctuating climate (droughts) on crop productivity. Nevertheless, the interactions between climatic variability, demography and warfare have been less thoroughly evaluated. We develop population dynamic models to test feedback relationships between population growth, climate change and warfare in the Central Andes, where considerable regional hydroclimate variations have occurred over a millennium. Through population models, we found out that the rise and demise of social polities in the northern coast of the Central Andes appear to be a consequence of climate change. In contrast, for the highlands of Peru and the Titicaca basin, population models suggest that warfare intensity has a negative effect on population growth rates.

Towards its conclusion, the paper presents the demands the Anthropocene makes, as a geological Epoch (in which the human becomes a geophysical force, capable of changing the Earth’s biophysical systems), of literary studies as a possible field for theoretical articulations that may add to the debates on this historical moment in which climate change, forced dislocations, the mass extinction of several species, and other urgent matters come to the fore.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2018Publisher:FapUNIFESP (SciELO) Authors: Martin, Andrey Minin;RESUMO Este artigo propõe uma discussão sobre a dinâmica da produção energética nacional e suas possibilidades no desenvolvimento hidrelétrico no interior do Brasil, tendo como suporte referencial a instalação do Complexo Hidrelétrico Urubupungá.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2020Publisher:International Big History Association Authors: Tatiana de Freitas Massuno; What if humans continue to pursue “more and better”?
