description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2018Publisher:FapUNIFESP (SciELO) Authors: Carlo Patti;Abstract Contributing to a global nuclear history, this article discusses Brazil’s refusal to accept sensitive nuclear assistance from South Africa in the late 1970s. Relying on primary sources and oral history interviews, this study argues that despite their similar positions in the global nuclear order, Brazil’s decision was connected to political and technological reasons.

For that, the 3-D Sustainability Model was used, which presents a new approach to objectively evaluate hierarchies and the definition of priorities in the relationship between economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The methodology used in this research is classified as narrative and bibliographic review research. The limits of environmental capacity were observed, and it is necessary to re-evaluate human actions on the Amazonian environment. There is a need for greater emphasis on the preservation of fauna, flora, rivers and streams, as well as changes in management practices and preservation of the rubber tree. The complexity of the man-Amazon relationship is clear when the economic, social, and environmental dynamics is observed.

The concept of ecological niche, considered by the food dimension point of view, was used to characterize a small farmers community from the south of Minas Gerais State (Brazil). Ten small farmer families and 76 different meals eaten by them were evaluated in this study, during three different periods: September 1995 (end of the dry season), December 1995 (rainy season) and April 1996 (end of the rainy season). The analysed community appeared to depend markedly on certain food items showing little seasonal variation in their diet and appeared also to be self-sufficient in food supply, with satisfactory nutritional status. The food niche breadth for the studied small farmer families was always below 50%, with high seasonal overlap of the food niche, around 72% to 80%. The results are discussed based on social-cultural, economical and agrarian context.

The high-resolution diachronic data presented here, obtained directly from scalp hair, implies escalating coca and alcohol ingestion in the lead-up to death. These data, combined with archaeological and radiological evidence, deepen our understanding of the circumstances and context of final placement on the mountain top. We argue that the individuals were treated differently according to their age, status, and ritual role. Finally, we relate our findings to questions of consent, coercion, and/or compliance, and the controversial issues of ideological justification and strategies of social control and political legitimation pursued by the expansionist Inca state before European contact.

The occupation of these islands began between 700 and 850 CE, 700 years earlier than suggested by documentary sources. These early occupations caused widespread ecological and landscape disturbance and raise doubts about the islands' presumed pristine nature during Portuguese arrival. The earliest explorers arrived at the end of the early Middle Ages, when temperatures were higher than average, and the westerly winds were weaker, facilitating arrivals to the archipelago from northeastern Europe and inhibiting exploration from southern Europe. This is consistent with archaeological and genetic research suggesting the Norse were the first to colonize the Azores Archipelago.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2018Publisher:FapUNIFESP (SciELO) Authors: George Nathan Souza Brito; Christiana Cabicieri Profice; Wilson Alves De Araújo;Abstract This paper proposes to analyze the work of Ferreira de Castro, A Selva (The Jungle), published in 1930, under the perspective of sustainability.

Trigo; Ricardo M. Trigo;Significance We use a diverse set of lake and landscape proxy indicators to characterize initial human occupation and its impacts on the Azores Archipelago.
