Research data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2024Publisher:Zenodo Alexander-Haw, Abigail; Dütschke, Elisabeth; Helferich, Marvin; Preuß, Sabine; Schleich, Joachim; This dataset and codebook correspond to the initial round of survey data gathered in Germany in 2022, within the project FULFILL - Fundamental Decarbonisation Through Sufficiency By Lifestyle Changes. As part of Work Package 3 (WP3) in the FULFILL project, we collected quantitative data from six countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, and India. In the first round of the survey, we recruited a representative sample of approximately 2000 households in each country, taking into account both the individual and household perspectives. The survey includes a quantitative assessment of the carbon footprint in various domains of life, such as housing, mobility, and diet. In addition to this, the survey also measures socio-economic factors such as age, gender, income, education, household size, life stage, and political orientation. Furthermore, the survey includes measures of quality of life, encompassing aspects such as health and well-being, environmental quality, financial security, and comfort.

This dissertation answers various policy relevant economic questions in the fields of trade policy, monetary policy, and commodity markets and energy economics using structural vector autoregression (SVAR) models. SVARs constitute a parsimonious way to model the relations between different macroeconomic and/or financial variables and they are used to estimate the dynamic causal effects of economic shocks. For each economic question, this dissertation applies an identification strategy that is tailored to the relevant data and its statistical properties as well as the underlying assumptions about economic mechanisms among the regarded time series. Specifically, this dissertation consists of four chapters. The first two chapters estimate the effects of trade policy on financial markets and on the macroeconomy. The third chapter makes a methodological contribution to the SVAR literature in an application to monetary policy shocks. The final chapter moves away from trade and monetary policy to commodity markets and energy economics but also relies on time series methods. It analyzes the role of metals for the clean energy transition.

The energy transition, including the substitution of Russian natural gas, is a major challenge that requires supportive measures in many areas of the energy sector. One of these areas is the production of biomethane from domestic kitchen waste. This mainly includes food waste. There is a large untapped potential for its use. Citizens, waste management companies and politicians can contribute to realise this.

In Erlend Nødtvedt’s transgressive novel Vestlandet (2017), an alternative story is presented. In contrast to conventional climate change denial, the two protagonists turn the situation upside down and literally celebrate death and climate change and the exceptional Western Norwegian »sublime« landscape. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of laughter and the carnivalesque, I will investigate Vestlandet as a response to a world in climate crisis, and thereby transcending the ecocritical reluctance to engage with laughter. Environmental humor offers an alternative vision, a possibility to see ourselves from another perspective. Vestlandet contributes to the creation of new climate change narratives and communicates potential for change, but there is no guarantee that laughter will lead to increased awareness and action.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2021 GermanyPublisher:Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Authors: Getzin, Sofia; Witte, Mira;During a survey in September 2010 in Tjärnö, Sweden, we examined differences in the occurrence of the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides at rocky shores. We sought to proof whether there were differences in the density of S. balanoides in habitats depending either on wave energy or on orientation of the rocks facing north and south respectively. Data analysis showed no differences in occurrence of the barnacles depending on wave energy in the habitat. In contrast there is a significant difference between examined rock faces with opposite orientation. Habitats with northerly orientation harboured greatly more individuals of S. balanoides than southerly orientated habitats. These results indicate that several factors influence the occurrence of barnacles in habitats connected to orientation. We suggest that there is a correlation between solar exposure, which influences thermal stress and the risk of desiccation and the frequency of occurrence of S. balanoides. The aim is to provide a compact and independent overview that can serve as a guideline and basis of decision-making for future investments in the energy industry. The study discusses 47 technologies with different technology readiness levels and compares them in terms of technical and economic performance indicators. A set of uniform boundary conditions common to the energy industry allows to ensure comparability of economically relevant data (especially hydrogen production costs). In the study, technology profiles describe technologies with high technical relevance and availability as well as technologies with high technical potential but currently low availability. In each case, the state of development, operating principle, market situation as well as technical and economic risks are discussed. Additionally, a technology radar briefly presents technologies with currently unclear technical potential or technologies that are not yet available.
