    Résumé. Les observations des changements de masse des glaciers sont essentielles pour comprendre la réponse des glaciers au changement climatique et aux impacts connexes, tels que le ruissellement régional, les changements écosystémiques et l'élévation du niveau de la mer à l'échelle mondiale. Les capteurs optiques et radar spatiaux permettent de quantifier les changements d'élévation des glaciers, et donc les changements de masse pluriannuels, à l'échelle régionale et mondiale. Cependant, les estimations d'un nombre croissant d'études montrent un large éventail de résultats avec des différences souvent au-delà des limites d'incertitude. Ici, nous présentons les résultats d'une expérience intercomparaison communautaire utilisant des données d'interférométrie stéréo optique spatiale (ASTER) et radar à ouverture synthétique (TanDEM-X) pour estimer les changements d'altitude pour des glaciers définis et des périodes cibles qui posent différents défis d'évaluation. En utilisant des modèles d'élévation numériques (DEM) fournis ou autotraités pour cinq sites de test, 12 groupes de recherche ont fourni un total de 97 ensembles de données de changement d'altitude spatiaux en utilisant diverses stratégies de traitement. La validation avec des données aéroportées a montré que l'utilisation d'une estimation d'ensemble promet de réduire les erreurs aléatoires provenant de différents instruments et méthodes de traitement, mais nécessite toujours une enquête et une correction plus complètes des erreurs systématiques. Los sensores ópticos y de radar transportados por el espacio permiten cuantificar los cambios de elevación de los glaciares y, por lo tanto, los cambios de masa plurianuales, a escala regional y global. Abstract. Observations of glacier mass changes are key to understanding the response of glaciers to climate change and related impacts, such as regional runoff, ecosystem changes, and global sea-level rise. Spaceborne optical and radar sensors make it possible to quantify glacier elevation changes, and thus multi-annual mass changes, on a regional and global scale. However, estimates from a growing number of studies show a wide range of results with differences often beyond uncertainty bounds. Here, we present the outcome of a community-based inter-comparison experiment using spaceborne optical stereo (ASTER) and synthetic aperture radar interferometry (TanDEM-X) data to estimate elevation changes for defined glaciers and target periods that pose different assessment challenges. Using provided or self-processed digital elevation models (DEMs) for five test sites, 12 research groups provided a total of 97 spaceborne elevation-change datasets using various processing strategies. Validation with airborne data showed that using an ensemble estimate is promising to reduce random errors from different instruments and processing methods, but still requires a more comprehensive investigation and correction of systematic errors. We found that scene selection, DEM processing, and co-registration have the biggest impact on the results. Other processing steps, such as treating spatial data voids, differences in survey periods, or radar penetration, can still be important for individual cases. Future research should focus on testing different implementations of individual processing steps (e.g. co-registration) and addressing issues related to temporal corrections, radar penetration, glacier area changes, and density conversion.     One third of world’s total energy is used in production of electricity and one fifth of the total electricity produced in the world is used in lighting. Hence, the materials that have high potential in the field of photovoltaic’s and photoluminescence have recently drawn special attention to meet the ever increasing energy demands. In this thesis, we have studied a few materials that hold tremendous promises in fabricating photovoltaics and photoluminescent devices. Any ferroelectric material is an efficient solar energy converter as it contains an the intrinsic dipolar field which can effectively separate the photo excited electron and hole. We have developed a few materials which possess inherent polarization efficiently absorb over a wide portion of the solar spectrum and hence can find application in the field of photovoltaics. Secondly, we also dealt with semiconductor nonmaterial’s which are technologically very important owing to their improved photoluminescence properties. We tried to improve their light emitting efficiency by engineering crystal structure in nanometer length scales. The thesis deals with such advanced energy materials and is divided in seven chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts that are relevant in the subsequent chapters. The chapter is started with a brief scenario of current status of energy production and its usage. Next, we have discussed the prospects of ferroelectric materials in photovoltaic devices. This is followed by a brief background on ferroelectricity and related properties which we have studied subsequently. At the end of this chapter a brief overview of photoluminescence properties in semiconductor nonmaterial’s is presented. In this section we have addressed the particular issues that need to be taken care of in order to improve their light emission properties.     With the increase in energy of the Large Hadron Collider to a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV for Run 2, events with dense environments, such as in the cores of high-energy jets, became a focus for new physics searches as well as measurements of the Standard Model. These environments are characterized by charged-particle separations of the order of the tracking detectors sensor granularity. Basic track quantities are compared between 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS experiment and simulation of proton-proton collisions producing high-transverse-momentum jets at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The impact of charged-particle separations and multiplicities on the track reconstruction performance is discussed. The efficiency in the cores of jets with transverse momenta between 200 GeV and 1600 GeV is quantified using a novel, data-driven, method. The method uses the energy loss, dE/dx, to identify pixel clusters originating from two charged particles. Of the charged particles creating these clusters, the measured fraction that fail to be reconstructed is $0.061 \pm 0.006 \textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.014 \textrm{(syst.)}$ and $0.093 \pm 0.017 \textrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.021 \textrm{(syst.)}$ for jet transverse momenta of 200-400 GeV and 1400-1600 GeV, respectively. Likewise, current production and consumption models exceed planetary limitations to human activity in many ways, causing irreversible damage to the environment and earth system.     In practice, the quest for the optimal operation of energy systems is complicated by the simultaneous presence of operating constraints, among which the need for producing the power required by the user, and of uncertainty. The latter concept incorporates the potential inaccuracies of the models at hand but also degradation effects or unexpected changes, such as, e.g. random load changes or variations of the availability of the energy source for renewable energy systems. Since these changes affect the optimal values of the operating conditions, online adaptation is required to ensure that the system is always operated optimally. This typically implies the online solving of an optimization problem. Unfortunately, the applicability and the performances of most model-based optimization methods rely on the quality of the available model of the system under investigation. On the other hand, Real-Time Optimization (RTO) methods use the available online measurements in the optimization framework and are, thus, capable of bringing the desired self-optimizing control reaction. In this article, we show the benefits of using several RTO methods (co-) developed by the authors to energy systems through the successful application of (i) “Real-Time Optimization via Modifier Adaptation” to an experimental Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) stack, of (ii) the recently released “SCFO-solver ” to an industrial SOFC stack, and of (iii) Dynamic RTO to a simulated tethered kite for renewable power production. It is shown how such problems can be formulated and solved and significant improvements of the performances of the three aforementioned energy systems are illustrated.

    Climate change is a global challenge today, with its impacts felt worldwide. The coastal regions around globe are more prone to the impacts of climate change than the inlands, fishing being one of the primary occupations of the coast, the fishermen community is the most vulnerable group to be affected by the Climate change. Even with extensive scientific research in this arena there is a lacuna in finding a panacea to this existing problem. Coastal environments cover 8 per cent of the world‟s surface, house 70 per cent of the human population, provide 90 per cent of the global fish catch, and deliver 40 per cent of the estimated economic value derived from ecosystem goods and services. In addition to increasing population pressure and demand for marine protein, climate change is modifying coastal environments and increasing the vulnerability of marine-dependent communities around the world. The effect of sea level rise means that coastal fishing communities are vulnerable and are in the front line of the deleterious effects of climate change. Changing seawater temperature and current flows will likely bring increases, decreases and shifts in the distribution of marine fish stocks, with some areas benefiting while others lose. These changes may have impacts on the nature and value of commercial fisheries. Many artisanal fishers are extremely poor with social and political marginalization with limited access to healthcare, education and other public services. With little capacity to adapt, the small-scale and migrant fishers are highly vulnerable to losses of natural capital consequent to climate impacts. The impacts of climate change affect the economy as well the social standards of fisher folk with implications for food security and sustainable livelihoods.     Hill agriculture, characterized by undulating terrains and intricate poly-culture and agroforestry systems, serves as a vital livelihood source for human inhabitants. Employing traditional cultivation methods on ridges and valleys, small-scale farmers achieve remarkable productivity and stability, yielding high returns per unit of labor and energy. This agricultural approach mirrors natural ecosystems, boasting a rich organic environment, disease-resistant biodiversity, and inherent stability. Despite relying predominantly on rainfed methods, the sustainability of hill agriculture has endured through centuries of practice. This paper delves into the unique characteristics and sustainability of hill agriculture, drawing parallels between its practices and natural ecosystem dynamics. Through an exploration of traditional cultivation techniques and their alignment with ecological principles, it elucidates the resilience and productivity inherent in this agricultural approach. Emphasizing the significance of small-scale farming communities, the paper underscores their role as stewards of biodiversity and guardians of traditional knowledge systems. Moreover, the paper addresses the challenges and opportunities facing hill agriculture in the contemporary context. In light of increasing environmental pressures and changing socio-economic dynamics, it advocates for the preservation and promotion of traditional agricultural practices. By harnessing indigenous knowledge and integrating modern innovations judiciously, stakeholders can enhance the resilience and sustainability of hill agriculture while safeguarding the livelihoods of communities reliant on these practices.     Résumé. Les observations des changements de masse des glaciers sont essentielles pour comprendre la réponse des glaciers au changement climatique et aux impacts connexes, tels que le ruissellement régional, les changements écosystémiques et l'élévation du niveau de la mer à l'échelle mondiale. Les capteurs optiques et radar spatiaux permettent de quantifier les changements d'élévation des glaciers, et donc les changements de masse pluriannuels, à l'échelle régionale et mondiale. Cependant, les estimations d'un nombre croissant d'études montrent un large éventail de résultats avec des différences souvent au-delà des limites d'incertitude. Ici, nous présentons les résultats d'une expérience intercomparaison communautaire utilisant des données d'interférométrie stéréo optique spatiale (ASTER) et radar à ouverture synthétique (TanDEM-X) pour estimer les changements d'altitude pour des glaciers définis et des périodes cibles qui posent différents défis d'évaluation. En utilisant des modèles d'élévation numériques (DEM) fournis ou autotraités pour cinq sites de test, 12 groupes de recherche ont fourni un total de 97 ensembles de données de changement d'altitude spatiaux en utilisant diverses stratégies de traitement. La validation avec des données aéroportées a montré que l'utilisation d'une estimation d'ensemble promet de réduire les erreurs aléatoires provenant de différents instruments et méthodes de traitement, mais nécessite toujours une enquête et une correction plus complètes des erreurs systématiques. Nous avons constaté que la sélection de la scène, le traitement DEM et le co-enregistrement ont le plus grand impact sur les résultats. D'autres étapes de traitement, telles que le traitement des vides de données spatiales, les différences de périodes d'enquête ou la pénétration radar, peuvent toujours être importantes pour des cas individuels. Les recherches futures devraient se concentrer sur la mise à l'essai de différentes implémentations d'étapes de traitement individuelles (par exemple, le co-enregistrement) et aborder les questions liées aux corrections temporelles, à la pénétration radar, aux changements de zone glaciaire et à la conversion de densité. Enfin, notre communauté a clairement besoin de développer les meilleures pratiques, d'utiliser des logiciels ouverts et reproductibles et d'évaluer l'incertitude globale afin d'améliorer les comparaisons et de renforcer les connaissances sur les processus physiques dans les études de changement d'altitude des glaciers. Observar los cambios en la masa de los glaciares es clave para comprender la respuesta de los glaciares al cambio climático y los impactos relacionados, como la escorrentía regional, los cambios en los ecosistemas y el aumento global del nivel del mar. Los sensores ópticos y de radar transportados por el espacio permiten cuantificar los cambios de elevación de los glaciares y, por lo tanto, los cambios de masa plurianuales, a escala regional y global. Sin embargo, las estimaciones de un número creciente de estudios muestran una amplia gama de resultados con diferencias que a menudo van más allá de los límites de incertidumbre. Abstract. Observations of glacier mass changes are key to understanding the response of glaciers to climate change and related impacts, such as regional runoff, ecosystem changes, and global sea-level rise. Spaceborne optical and radar sensors make it possible to quantify glacier elevation changes, and thus multi-annual mass changes, on a regional and global scale. However, estimates from a growing number of studies show a wide range of results with differences often beyond uncertainty bounds. Here, we present the outcome of a community-based inter-comparison experiment using spaceborne optical stereo (ASTER) and synthetic aperture radar interferometry (TanDEM-X) data to estimate elevation changes for defined glaciers and target periods that pose different assessment challenges. Using provided or self-processed digital elevation models (DEMs) for five test sites, 12 research groups provided a total of 97 spaceborne elevation-change datasets using various processing strategies. Validation with airborne data showed that using an ensemble estimate is promising to reduce random errors from different instruments and processing methods, but still requires a more comprehensive investigation and correction of systematic errors. We found that scene selection, DEM processing, and co-registration have the biggest impact on the results. Other processing steps, such as treating spatial data voids, differences in survey periods, or radar penetration, can still be important for individual cases. Future research should focus on testing different implementations of individual processing steps (e.g. co-registration) and addressing issues related to temporal corrections, radar penetration, glacier area changes, and density conversion.     One third of world’s total energy is used in production of electricity and one fifth of the total electricity produced in the world is used in lighting. Hence, the materials that have high potential in the field of photovoltaic’s and photoluminescence have recently drawn special attention to meet the ever increasing energy demands. In this thesis, we have studied a few materials that hold tremendous promises in fabricating photovoltaics and photoluminescent devices. Any ferroelectric material is an efficient solar energy converter as it contains an the intrinsic dipolar field which can effectively separate the photo excited electron and hole. We have developed a few materials which possess inherent polarization efficiently absorb over a wide portion of the solar spectrum and hence can find application in the field of photovoltaics. Secondly, we also dealt with semiconductor nonmaterial’s which are technologically very important owing to their improved photoluminescence properties. We tried to improve their light emitting efficiency by engineering crystal structure in nanometer length scales. The thesis deals with such advanced energy materials and is divided in seven chapters. Chapter 1 provides a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts that are relevant in the subsequent chapters. The chapter is started with a brief scenario of current status of energy production and its usage. Next, we have discussed the prospects of ferroelectric materials in photovoltaic devices. This is followed by a brief background on ferroelectricity and related properties which we have studied subsequently. At the end of this chapter a brief overview of photoluminescence properties in semiconductor nonmaterial’s is presented. In this section we have addressed the particular issues that need to be taken care of in order to improve their light emission properties.     With the increase in energy of the Large Hadron Collider to a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV for Run 2, events with dense environments, such as in the cores of high-energy jets, became a focus for new physics searches as well as measurements of the Standard Model. These environments are characterized by charged-particle separations of the order of the tracking detectors sensor granularity. Basic track quantities are compared between 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS experiment and simulation of proton-proton collisions producing high-transverse-momentum jets at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The impact of charged-particle separations and multiplicities on the track reconstruction performance is discussed. The efficiency in the cores of jets with transverse momenta between 200 GeV and 1600 GeV is quantified using a novel, data-driven, method. The method uses the energy loss, dE/dx, to identify pixel clusters originating from two charged particles. Of the charged particles creating these clusters, the measured fraction that fail to be reconstructed is $0.061 \pm 0.006 \textrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.014 \textrm{(syst.)}$ and $0.093 \pm 0.017 \textrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.021 \textrm{(syst.)}$ for jet transverse momenta of 200-400 GeV and 1400-1600 GeV, respectively. Chaque jour, les conditions de production quelque part dans le monde portent atteinte à la santé et au bien-être humains, souvent loin de l'endroit où les biens et services sont finalement achetés par le consommateur final. De même, les modèles actuels de production et de consommation dépassent à bien des égards les limites planétaires de l'activité humaine, causant des dommages irréversibles à l'environnement et au système terrestre. Ces impacts de l'activité économique sont, en principe, reconnus aujourd'hui et se manifestent comme des préoccupations clés en matière de durabilité. While accelerated economic globalization may have generated additional employment and income worldwide, it has also been one of the drivers of unsustainable production and consumption patterns across the globe. Likewise, current production and consumption models exceed planetary limitations to human activity in many ways, causing irreversible damage to the environment and earth system.     In practice, the quest for the optimal operation of energy systems is complicated by the simultaneous presence of operating constraints, among which the need for producing the power required by the user, and of uncertainty. The latter concept incorporates the potential inaccuracies of the models at hand but also degradation effects or unexpected changes, such as, e.g. random load changes or variations of the availability of the energy source for renewable energy systems. Since these changes affect the optimal values of the operating conditions, online adaptation is required to ensure that the system is always operated optimally. This typically implies the online solving of an optimization problem. Unfortunately, the applicability and the performances of most model-based optimization methods rely on the quality of the available model of the system under investigation. On the other hand, Real-Time Optimization (RTO) methods use the available online measurements in the optimization framework and are, thus, capable of bringing the desired self-optimizing control reaction. In this article, we show the benefits of using several RTO methods (co-) developed by the authors to energy systems through the successful application of (i) “Real-Time Optimization via Modifier Adaptation” to an experimental Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) stack, of (ii) the recently released “SCFO-solver ” to an industrial SOFC stack, and of (iii) Dynamic RTO to a simulated tethered kite for renewable power production. It is shown how such problems can be formulated and solved and significant improvements of the performances of the three aforementioned energy systems are illustrated.

    Climate change is a global challenge today, with its impacts felt worldwide. The coastal regions around globe are more prone to the impacts of climate change than the inlands, fishing being one of the primary occupations of the coast, the fishermen community is the most vulnerable group to be affected by the Climate change. Even with extensive scientific research in this arena there is a lacuna in finding a panacea to this existing problem. Coastal environments cover 8 per cent of the world‟s surface, house 70 per cent of the human population, provide 90 per cent of the global fish catch, and deliver 40 per cent of the estimated economic value derived from ecosystem goods and services. In addition to increasing population pressure and demand for marine protein, climate change is modifying coastal environments and increasing the vulnerability of marine-dependent communities around the world. The effect of sea level rise means that coastal fishing communities are vulnerable and are in the front line of the deleterious effects of climate change. Changing seawater temperature and current flows will likely bring increases, decreases and shifts in the distribution of marine fish stocks, with some areas benefiting while others lose. These changes may have impacts on the nature and value of commercial fisheries. Many artisanal fishers are extremely poor with social and political marginalization with limited access to healthcare, education and other public services. With little capacity to adapt, the small-scale and migrant fishers are highly vulnerable to losses of natural capital consequent to climate impacts. The impacts of climate change affect the economy as well the social standards of fisher folk with implications for food security and sustainable livelihoods.     Hill agriculture, characterized by undulating terrains and intricate poly-culture and agroforestry systems, serves as a vital livelihood source for human inhabitants. Employing traditional cultivation methods on ridges and valleys, small-scale farmers achieve remarkable productivity and stability, yielding high returns per unit of labor and energy. This agricultural approach mirrors natural ecosystems, boasting a rich organic environment, disease-resistant biodiversity, and inherent stability. Despite relying predominantly on rainfed methods, the sustainability of hill agriculture has endured through centuries of practice. This paper delves into the unique characteristics and sustainability of hill agriculture, drawing parallels between its practices and natural ecosystem dynamics. Through an exploration of traditional cultivation techniques and their alignment with ecological principles, it elucidates the resilience and productivity inherent in this agricultural approach. Emphasizing the significance of small-scale farming communities, the paper underscores their role as stewards of biodiversity and guardians of traditional knowledge systems. Moreover, the paper addresses the challenges and opportunities facing hill agriculture in the contemporary context. In light of increasing environmental pressures and changing socio-economic dynamics, it advocates for the preservation and promotion of traditional agricultural practices. By harnessing indigenous knowledge and integrating modern innovations judiciously, stakeholders can enhance the resilience and sustainability of hill agriculture while safeguarding the livelihoods of communities reliant on these practices. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the intricate relationships between human societies, natural ecosystems, and agricultural practices in hill regions. It highlights the importance of adopting holistic approaches that prioritize ecological integrity, socio-economic equity, and cultural preservation. Through informed policy interventions and community-led initiatives, hill agriculture can continue to thrive as a resilient and sustainable livelihood strategy, nourishing both people and the planet.
