description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2014Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: M.Elena Cantos-Soto; Christian Wieckert; Lucía Martínez-Arcos; Christian Hutter; +2 AuthorsM.Elena Cantos-Soto; Christian Wieckert; Lucía Martínez-Arcos; Christian Hutter; Marc Röger; Aránzazu Fernández-García;Abstract Secondary concentrators are used in solar concentrating systems to redirect solar beams reflected by the primary concentrators to the focal point or line. These components allow to increase the concentrated solar flux density and hence to lower thermal radiation losses. Solar reflectors for secondary concentrators are permanently exposed to environmental conditions, high radiation fluxes and elevated temperatures that potentially cause stress and degradation throughout the time. Therefore, analyzing solar reflectors of secondary concentrators by simulating these conditions is crucial. No previous research works about the durability of solar reflector materials for secondary concentrators have been reported. The present work is focused on studying the degradation of the reflector materials by simulating accelerated aging, caused by several ambient parameters and the effect of concentrated radiation. Both cooled and uncooled systems for secondary concentrators are included in this study. According to results obtained, aluminum reflectors and thin silvered-glass reflectors glued to an aluminum structure showed minimum reflectance losses and structural degradation under the operation conditions of cooled 3D secondary concentrators (tower systems). Following critical aspects to avoid reflector degradation were identified: to select a suitable adhesive material to glue the thin silvered-glass reflector to the support aluminum structure, to properly protect reflectors edges, to design a suitable cooling system and to avoid the combination of high radiation fluxes with mechanical stress. In addition, laminated silvered-glass reflectors have shown to be suitable for uncooled 2D secondary concentrators (Fresnel collectors). Furthermore, a comparison with naturally aged secondary concentrators using silvered-glass reflectors glued to an aluminum structure revealed that the simulated degradation under accelerated conditions performed in this work did reproduce the most frequent degradation patterns suffered in real operating conditions.

Here, we present a setup including an autoclave that is instrumented for in-situ electrochemical testing and that contains a ZrO2-based solid-state pH electrode and devices for temperature control and solution stirring. We show results highlighting the importance of adequate pre-calibration of the pH measurement, due to the hysteresis depending on temperature sweep. Additionally, we illustrate how interfacing the autoclave and the electrochemical cell to measuring and controlling instruments, using different data communication interfaces, can create ground loops. These ground loop interferences can introduce significant errors in the measurement, such as a potential shift of >100 mV. In complex, multi-instrument setups, a complete understanding of ground loops may often be difficult. Thus, we recommend systematic checks to identify the ground loops and we propose measures to avoid them. Measurement, 155 ISSN:0263-2241 ISSN:1873-412X

Current incentive schemes allow consumers to reduce their costs, and from the point of view of the supplier play a role in load balancing, but do not lead to optimal demand patterns. In the context of charging fleets of electric vehicles, we propose a centralised method for setting overnight charging schedules. This method uses evolutionary algorithms to automatically search for optimal plans, representing both the charging schedule and the energy drawn from the grid at each time-step. In successive experiments, we optimise for increased state of charge, reduced peak demand, and reduced consumer costs. In simulations, the centralised method achieves improvements in performance relative to simple models of non-centralised consumer behaviour.

The question of designing and deploying renewable energy technologies in symbiosis with existing grids and infrastructure is arising. While current energy system models mainly focus on the energy transformation system or only investigate the effect on one energy vector grid, we present a methodology to characterize different energy vector grids and storage, integrated into the multi-energy and multi-sector modeling framework EnergyScope. The characterization of energy grids is achieved through a traditional energy technology and grid modeling approach, integrating economic and technical parameters. The methodology has been applied to the case study of a country with a high existing transmission infrastructure density, e.g., Switzerland, switching from a fossil fuel-based system to a high share of renewable energy deployment. The results show that the economic optimum with high shares of renewable energy requires the electric distribution grid reinforcement with 2.439 GW (+61%) Low Voltage (LV) and 4.626 GW (+82%) Medium Voltage (MV), with no reinforcement required at transmission level [High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV)]. The reinforcement is due to high shares of LV-Photovoltaic (PV) (15.4 GW) and MV-wind (20 GW) deployment. Without reinforcement, additional biomass is required for methane production, which is stored in 4.8–5.95 TWh methane storage tanks to compensate for seasonal intermittency using the existing gas infrastructure. In contrast, hydro storage capacity is used at a maximum of 8.9 TWh. Furthermore, the choice of less efficient technologies to avoid reinforcement results in a 8.5%–9.3% cost penalty compared to the cost of the reinforced system. This study considers a geographically averaged and aggregated model, assuming all production and consumption are made in one single spot, not considering the role of future decentralization of the energy system, leading to a possible overestimation of grid reinforcement needs.

The coupling of a one-dimensional thermal model with a two-dimensional magnetic model is presented. The thermal model takes into consideration the magnetocaloric effect as a source term and the energy conservation between a solid and a fluid. The magnetic model considers the space distribution of the internal magnetic field strength, and thus it includes the demagnetization effect. Measurements on an experimental magnetic refrigeration test device are performed using distilled water as the working fluid. At cyclic steady states, the temperatures of the fluid on both sides of the regenerator are calculated numerically and compared with the measurement results. The inability to provide a constant internal magnetic field during the heat transfer process with a permanent magnet is demonstrated. A reasonable agreement between simulations and experiments confirms the validity of the proposed model.

In this work, the conventional scenario of the black liquor use (i.e., concentration and combustion) is compared with the black liquor upgrading (via) gasification process for ammonia production in terms of economics, exergy efficiency and environmental impact. The combined energy integration and exergy analysis is used to identify the potential improvements that may remain hidden to the energy analysis alone, namely, the determination and mitigation of the process irreversibility. As a result, the exergy efficiencies of the conventional and the integrated cases average 40% and 42%, respectively, whereas the overall emission balance varies from 1.97 to −0.69 tCO2/tPulp, respectively. The negative CO2 emissions indicate the environmental benefits of the proposed integrated process compared to the conventional kraft pulp mill.

SummaryThe German government has adopted a law that requires sewage plants to go beyond the recovery of phosphorus from wastewater and to promote recycling. We argue that there is no physical global short‐ or mid‐term phosphorus scarcity. However, we also argue that there are legitimate reasons for policies such as those of Germany, including: precaution as a way to ensure future generations’ long‐term supply security, promotion of technologies for closed‐loop economics in a promising stage of technology development, and decrease in the current supply risk with a new resource pool.

Flexibility aggregation is seen as a promising solution to facilitate the integration of solar and wind power into the energy system. While the solution is well known, it remains fairly uninvestigated in terms of the components needed to result in a business success. This study investigates the long-term business dynamics of flexibility aggregators with a simulation model. Our study finds that new entrants in flexibility markets are likely to be trapped in a “technology valley of death” situation on account of being “too small to bid”. Therefore, we test different strategies to overcome this critical initial phase. Diversifying revenue streams and introducing a leasing offer for flexible prosumers to enlarge the customer base are promising strategies to reach the relevant bidding size required to compete in balancing power markets. The analysis offers insights on the long-term uncertainties of the business case. The findings of this paper contribute to the discussion on how to develop functioning and robust business models for low-carbon flexibility. Furthermore, the study is of high practical relevance, as one of the burning questions for new entrants in flexibility markets is addressed with a concrete strategy analysis.
