The filter element support was coated with CeO 2 , CaO–Al 2 O 3 and MgO with a specific surface of 7.4, 15.9 and 21.9 m 2 /g synthesized by exo-templating with activated carbon. Doping of a MgO coated filter element with 60 wt% NiO has led to an increase of the specific surface from 0.15 to 0.21 m 2 /g, whereas in case of a MgO–Al 2 O 3 coated filter element a decrease from 1.18 to 0.91 m 2 /g was found. An increase of the NiO loading from 6 to 60 wt% on a MgO coated filter element resulted in an increase of the naphthalene conversion from 91 to 100% at 800 °C and a face velocity of 2.5 cm/s at a naphthalene concentration of 5 g/Nm 3 in model biomass gasification gas. In case of a MgO–Al 2 O 3 coated filter element with 60 wt% NiO in addition to complete naphthalene conversion in the absence of H 2 S, a higher conversion of 66% was found in the presence of 100 ppmv H 2 S compared to 49% of the MgO–NiO coated filter element. After scaling up of the catalytic activation procedure to a 1520 mm long filter candle, which shows an acceptable differential pressure of 54.9 mbar, 58 and 97% naphthalene conversion was achieved in the presence and absence of H 2 S, respectively. The calculated WHSV value of 209.6 Nm 3 h −1 kg −1 indicates the technical feasibility of a further increase of the catalytic performance by an increase of the NiO loading.

A new method of calculating the optimal reclosing time based on the transient energy function (TEF) is presented in this paper. It has been shown that an optimal reclosing time can be used to set the autoreclosing device so that the system stability or power-transfer capability can be significantly improved. Though power-system TEF is based on classical models, the results from simulation studies of a real system (46 generators and 230 buses) with complex models show that the optimal reclosing time calculated using TEF can be used effectively.

Alcohol treatment caused a significant decrease in isolation of yeast and moulds. Both organisms were cultivated at 25.5 and 31%, respectively, when not treated with alcohol, whereas the isolation rate dropped to 10 and 17.5%, respectively, after alcohol treatment. Isolation of dermatophytes decreased from 27.5 to 23.5% when alcohol disinfection was used. In conclusion, although alcohol disinfection of nail samples in the laboratory effectively decreases the isolation rate of unwanted contaminants on Sabouraud glucose agar without cycloheximide, it hampers the isolation of dermatophytes and pathogenic yeasts on cycloheximide‐containing media.

The CYBERLEGs system is a new artificial physical and cognitive lower-limb replacement system for dysvascular transfemoral amputees intended for assistance in activities of daily living. By lowering the cognitive and metabolic effort of using a prosthetic system, CYBERLEGs is intended to increase the number of amputees using prosthetic systems as well as expand the capabilities of those who use currently available technology.

Wood ash recycling to forests is beneficial because it regains nutrients and prevents acidification, but wood ash application is restricted due to its cadmium (Cd) content. We question if Cd in wood ash represents a problem, since decreases in Cd bioavailability due to ash-induced pH changes may counteract increased total Cd concentration. We studied effects of wood ash (0, 3, 9 and 30 t ha-1) and lime (pH increase equivalent to the wood ash treatments) on growth and Cd uptake in Deschampsia flexuosa. After four months, we measured plant biomass and Cd accumulation, and extracted Cd from the soil using three different methods; HNO3 (total), EDTA (chelator-based) and NH4NO3 (salt-based). Wood ash and lime strongly stimulated plant growth. Cd concentration in the plant tissue decreased with wood ash and lime addition, and correlated positively with the NH4NO3 extractable fraction of Cd in the soil. In contrast, HNO3 and EDTA extracted more Cd with increased wood ash application. We conclude that wood ash amendment increases soil pH, total Cd concentration, nutrient levels and stimulates plant growth. However, it does not increase Cd accumulation in D. flexuosa, as pH-driven decreases in Cd bioavailability leads to reduced plant Cd uptake. Finally, soil bioavailable Cd is best determined using NH4NO3-extraction.

AbstractNitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and causes stratospheric ozone depletion. While the emissions of N2O from soil are widely recognized, recent research has shown that terrestrial plants may also emit N2O from their leaves under controlled laboratory conditions. However, it is unclear whether foliar N2O emissions are universal across varying plant taxa, what the global significance of foliar N2O emissions is, and how the foliage produces N2O in situ. Here we investigated the abilities of 25 common plant taxa, including trees, shrubs and herbs, to emit N2O under in situ conditions. Using 15N isotopic labeling, we demonstrated that the foliage‐emitted N2O was predominantly derived from nitrate. Moreover, by selectively injecting biocide in conjunction with the isolating and back‐inoculating of endophytes, we demonstrated that the foliar N2O emissions were driven by endophytic bacteria. The seasonal N2O emission rates ranged from 3.2 to 9.2 ng N2O–N g−1 dried foliage h−1. Extrapolating these emission rates to global foliar biomass and plant N uptake, we estimated global foliar N2O emission to be 1.21 and 1.01 Tg N2O–N year−1, respectively. These estimates account for 6%–7% of the current global annual N2O emission of 17 Tg N2O–N year−1, indicating that in situ foliar N2O emission is a universal process for terrestrial plants and contributes significantly to the global N2O inventory. This finding highlights the importance of measuring foliar N2O emissions in future studies to enable the accurate assigning of mechanisms and the development of effective mitigation.

In addition, accurate current control is achieved in the presence of dynamical uncertainties. Unlike many controllers available for DC-DC converters, the adaptive controller's stability is guaranteed by Lyapunov stability theory. A comparison to PI counterpart has been carried out. Results show higher performance, which lead to more efficient operations of DC-DC converters.

A slurry consisting of dionized water, 13X zeolite powder, and Acrylic latex emulsion (ALE) was used to coat the finned tube. The finned tube was coated by deep coating method. The equilibrium isotherms were measured at the range of 20–90 °C and fitted well by the dual-site Langmuir model. The average difference between the model and the results obtained from the experiments is about 2.5%. The nitrogen adsorption/desorption at 77 K was used for characterization of adsorbents. A 11% reduction was observed in pore volume and surface area. The dynamic test showed that the desorption of adsorbed CO2 takes place in about 14 s which is an order of magnitude faster than the fastest developed method. A conservative criterion was developed for estimating adsorbent working capacity. This criterion showed that the working capacities of the adsorbent are about 80% of its ideal values.

The heat of reaction is considered to be released at a “reversible reaction temperature” and the diffusion between this reversible temperature and the actual temperature generates the actual exergy destruction. Corresponding hot and cold curve contributions result in the composite curves, which visualizes the exergy destruction and the chemical pinches which are present in the exchanger and reactor network. The concept is illustrated through an application on chemical recuperation in a gas turbine cycle.

However, compared to traditional border irrigation, how drip irrigation affects the biophysical conditions in the cropland and how crops physiologically respond to changes in biophysical conditions in terms of water, heat and carbon exchange remain largely unknown. In view of the above situation, to reveal the mechanism of drip irrigation in improving spring wheat water productivity, paired field experiments based on drip irrigation and border irrigation were conducted to extensively monitor water and heat fluxes at a typical spring wheat field (Triticum aestivum L.) in Northwest China during 2017–2020. The results showed that drip irrigation improved yield by 10.3 % and crop water productivity (i.e., yield-to-evapotranspiration-ratio) by 15.6 %, but reduced LAI by 16.9 % in contrast with border irrigation. Under drip irrigation, the lateral development of spring wheat roots was promoted by higher soil temperature combined with frequent dry-wet alternation in the shallow soil layer (0–20 cm), which was the basis for efficient absorption of water and fertilizer, as well as efficient formation of photosynthate. Meanwhile, drip irrigation increased net radiation and decreased latent heat flux by inhibiting leaf growth, thereby increased sensible heat, causing a higher soil temperature (+1.10 ℃) and canopy temperature (+1.11 ℃). Further analysis proved that soil temperature was the key factor affecting yield formation. Based on the above conditions, the decrease in leaf distribution coefficient (−0.030) led to the decrease in evapotranspiration (−5.7 %) and the increase in ear distribution coefficient (+0.029). Therefore, drip irrigation emphasized the role of soil moisture in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, enhanced crop activity by increasing field temperature, especially soil temperature, and finally improved yield and water productivity via carbon reallocation. The study revealed the mechanism of drip irrigation for improving spring wheat yield, and would contribute to improving Earth system models in representing agricultural cropland ecosystems with drip irrigation and predicting the subsequent biophysical and biogeochemical feedbacks to climate change.

The filter element support was coated with CeO 2 , CaO–Al 2 O 3 and MgO with a specific surface of 7.4, 15.9 and 21.9 m 2 /g synthesized by exo-templating with activated carbon. Doping of a MgO coated filter element with 60 wt% NiO has led to an increase of the specific surface from 0.15 to 0.21 m 2 /g, whereas in case of a MgO–Al 2 O 3 coated filter element a decrease from 1.18 to 0.91 m 2 /g was found. An increase of the NiO loading from 6 to 60 wt% on a MgO coated filter element resulted in an increase of the naphthalene conversion from 91 to 100% at 800 °C and a face velocity of 2.5 cm/s at a naphthalene concentration of 5 g/Nm 3 in model biomass gasification gas. In case of a MgO–Al 2 O 3 coated filter element with 60 wt% NiO in addition to complete naphthalene conversion in the absence of H 2 S, a higher conversion of 66% was found in the presence of 100 ppmv H 2 S compared to 49% of the MgO–NiO coated filter element. After scaling up of the catalytic activation procedure to a 1520 mm long filter candle, which shows an acceptable differential pressure of 54.9 mbar, 58 and 97% naphthalene conversion was achieved in the presence and absence of H 2 S, respectively. The calculated WHSV value of 209.6 Nm 3 h −1 kg −1 indicates the technical feasibility of a further increase of the catalytic performance by an increase of the NiO loading.

A new method of calculating the optimal reclosing time based on the transient energy function (TEF) is presented in this paper. It has been shown that an optimal reclosing time can be used to set the autoreclosing device so that the system stability or power-transfer capability can be significantly improved. Though power-system TEF is based on classical models, the results from simulation studies of a real system (46 generators and 230 buses) with complex models show that the optimal reclosing time calculated using TEF can be used effectively.

Alcohol treatment caused a significant decrease in isolation of yeast and moulds. Both organisms were cultivated at 25.5 and 31%, respectively, when not treated with alcohol, whereas the isolation rate dropped to 10 and 17.5%, respectively, after alcohol treatment. Isolation of dermatophytes decreased from 27.5 to 23.5% when alcohol disinfection was used. In conclusion, although alcohol disinfection of nail samples in the laboratory effectively decreases the isolation rate of unwanted contaminants on Sabouraud glucose agar without cycloheximide, it hampers the isolation of dermatophytes and pathogenic yeasts on cycloheximide‐containing media.

Wood ash recycling to forests is beneficial because it regains nutrients and prevents acidification, but wood ash application is restricted due to its cadmium (Cd) content. We question if Cd in wood ash represents a problem, since decreases in Cd bioavailability due to ash-induced pH changes may counteract increased total Cd concentration. We studied effects of wood ash (0, 3, 9 and 30 t ha-1) and lime (pH increase equivalent to the wood ash treatments) on growth and Cd uptake in Deschampsia flexuosa. After four months, we measured plant biomass and Cd accumulation, and extracted Cd from the soil using three different methods; HNO3 (total), EDTA (chelator-based) and NH4NO3 (salt-based). Wood ash and lime strongly stimulated plant growth. Cd concentration in the plant tissue decreased with wood ash and lime addition, and correlated positively with the NH4NO3 extractable fraction of Cd in the soil. In contrast, HNO3 and EDTA extracted more Cd with increased wood ash application. We conclude that wood ash amendment increases soil pH, total Cd concentration, nutrient levels and stimulates plant growth. However, it does not increase Cd accumulation in D. flexuosa, as pH-driven decreases in Cd bioavailability leads to reduced plant Cd uptake. Finally, soil bioavailable Cd is best determined using NH4NO3-extraction.

AbstractNitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and causes stratospheric ozone depletion. While the emissions of N2O from soil are widely recognized, recent research has shown that terrestrial plants may also emit N2O from their leaves under controlled laboratory conditions. However, it is unclear whether foliar N2O emissions are universal across varying plant taxa, what the global significance of foliar N2O emissions is, and how the foliage produces N2O in situ. Here we investigated the abilities of 25 common plant taxa, including trees, shrubs and herbs, to emit N2O under in situ conditions. Using 15N isotopic labeling, we demonstrated that the foliage‐emitted N2O was predominantly derived from nitrate. Moreover, by selectively injecting biocide in conjunction with the isolating and back‐inoculating of endophytes, we demonstrated that the foliar N2O emissions were driven by endophytic bacteria. The seasonal N2O emission rates ranged from 3.2 to 9.2 ng N2O–N g−1 dried foliage h−1. Extrapolating these emission rates to global foliar biomass and plant N uptake, we estimated global foliar N2O emission to be 1.21 and 1.01 Tg N2O–N year−1, respectively. These estimates account for 6%–7% of the current global annual N2O emission of 17 Tg N2O–N year−1, indicating that in situ foliar N2O emission is a universal process for terrestrial plants and contributes significantly to the global N2O inventory. This finding highlights the importance of measuring foliar N2O emissions in future studies to enable the accurate assigning of mechanisms and the development of effective mitigation.

Unlike many controllers available for DC-DC converters, the adaptive controller's stability is guaranteed by Lyapunov stability theory. A comparison to PI counterpart has been carried out. Results show higher performance, which lead to more efficient operations of DC-DC converters.

A slurry consisting of dionized water, 13X zeolite powder, and Acrylic latex emulsion (ALE) was used to coat the finned tube. The finned tube was coated by deep coating method. The equilibrium isotherms were measured at the range of 20–90 °C and fitted well by the dual-site Langmuir model. The average difference between the model and the results obtained from the experiments is about 2.5%. The nitrogen adsorption/desorption at 77 K was used for characterization of adsorbents. A 11% reduction was observed in pore volume and surface area. The dynamic test showed that the desorption of adsorbed CO2 takes place in about 14 s which is an order of magnitude faster than the fastest developed method. A conservative criterion was developed for estimating adsorbent working capacity. This criterion showed that the working capacities of the adsorbent are about 80% of its ideal values.

The heat of reaction is considered to be released at a “reversible reaction temperature” and the diffusion between this reversible temperature and the actual temperature generates the actual exergy destruction. Corresponding hot and cold curve contributions result in the composite curves, which visualizes the exergy destruction and the chemical pinches which are present in the exchanger and reactor network. The concept is illustrated through an application on chemical recuperation in a gas turbine cycle.

However, compared to traditional border irrigation, how drip irrigation affects the biophysical conditions in the cropland and how crops physiologically respond to changes in biophysical conditions in terms of water, heat and carbon exchange remain largely unknown. In view of the above situation, to reveal the mechanism of drip irrigation in improving spring wheat water productivity, paired field experiments based on drip irrigation and border irrigation were conducted to extensively monitor water and heat fluxes at a typical spring wheat field (Triticum aestivum L.) in Northwest China during 2017–2020. The results showed that drip irrigation improved yield by 10.3 % and crop water productivity (i.e., yield-to-evapotranspiration-ratio) by 15.6 %, but reduced LAI by 16.9 % in contrast with border irrigation. Under drip irrigation, the lateral development of spring wheat roots was promoted by higher soil temperature combined with frequent dry-wet alternation in the shallow soil layer (0–20 cm), which was the basis for efficient absorption of water and fertilizer, as well as efficient formation of photosynthate. Meanwhile, drip irrigation increased net radiation and decreased latent heat flux by inhibiting leaf growth, thereby increased sensible heat, causing a higher soil temperature (+1.10 ℃) and canopy temperature (+1.11 ℃). Further analysis proved that soil temperature was the key factor affecting yield formation. Based on the above conditions, the decrease in leaf distribution coefficient (−0.030) led to the decrease in evapotranspiration (−5.7 %) and the increase in ear distribution coefficient (+0.029). Therefore, drip irrigation emphasized the role of soil moisture in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, enhanced crop activity by increasing field temperature, especially soil temperature, and finally improved yield and water productivity via carbon reallocation. The study revealed the mechanism of drip irrigation for improving spring wheat yield, and would contribute to improving Earth system models in representing agricultural cropland ecosystems with drip irrigation and predicting the subsequent biophysical and biogeochemical feedbacks to climate change.
