description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2023Publisher:Frontiers Media SA Authors: Gao, Qingyu; Li, Zhifeng; Zhu, Yuxiang; The accelerator-driven sub-critical system is driven by external neutron sources, which are generated by the spallation reaction and maintain the stable operation of the sub-critical core, while the external neutron source increases the complexity of reactor neutron kinetic processes. This article focuses on simulation analysis of neutron space–time kinetics with a dynamic analysis code, which is developed based on the improved quasi-static approximation and Monte Carlo neutron transport method. The amplitude function and shape functions are solved to achieve the dynamics simulation process. Then, the transient responses of beam interruptions and reactivity insertions are calculated and analyzed for an experimental facility. To further verify the correctness and reliability of dynamic behavior, the simulation results are compared with experimental values, and the results show that the normalized neutron fluxes varying with time are in good agreement with the corresponding values. It can be concluded that the improved quasi-static coupled probability theory method can be used to solve the neutron space–time kinetic problem of the experimental facility, and the results are reliable.

An optimal energy management strategy was proposed for the hybrid ship, aiming to minimize consumption of the fuel. The model of the hybrid power system was established in the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation environment. The optimal energy management strategy was verified by simulation according to the typical drive cycle of ship compared to original energy management strategy. The simulation results show that the proposed optimization can improve fuel economy while the state of charge of the battery is maintained at reasonable range.

This work evaluates, for the first time, the possibility of producing multifunctional alkali-activated composites combining ultra-low density, low thermal conductivity, high acoustic absorption, and good moisture buffering capacity. The composites were prepared using cork as a lightweight aggregate. This novel material might promote energy savings and tackle the CO2 emissions of the building sector, while simultaneously improve the comfort for inhabitants (e.g. humidity levels regulation and sound pollution reduction). The composites apparent density (as low as 168 kg/m3) and thermal conductivity (as low as 68 mW/m K) are amongst the lowest ever reported for alkali-activated materials (AAM) composites and foams, while their sound absorption ability is comparable to the best performing AAM foams reported to date, but in addition these eco-friendly composites also show good ability to passively adjust the humidity levels inside buildings. The multifunctional properties shown by the cork – AAM composites set them apart from other conventional building materials and might contribute to the global sustainability of the construction sector. The activation energies of the pyrolysis reactions were obtained by the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS) methods respectively. The kinetic model was determined by the master plots method. Thermogravimetric results showed that the highest weight loss rate occurred from 345 to 365 °C as the heating rate was increased from 10 to 30 °C min−1, indicating the pyrolysis of cellulosic material in the WDPC. The weight loss between 400 and 500 °C can be attributed to the decomposition of polyethylene. By analysing the FTIR spectra, it was found that the absorbance of all the evolved gaseous products had peaks at 360 °C due to the decomposition of cellulose fibres and the cracking of polyethylene at 485 °C led to the emergence of a second hydrocarbon peak. Ketones were the most abundant condensable organic products and CO2 was the dominating gaseous product, which can also be produced via secondary cracking of the small molecule organics above 400 °C. Kinetic analysis revealed that the average activation energy of the pyrolysis of the WDPC was 153.75 kJ mol−1 from the FWO method and 151.43 kJ mol−1 from the KAS method. The reaction mechanism can be described by the R3 model.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can potentially be utilized for power generation, but their low power density and low energy storage capabilities remain major bottlenecks for their large-scale development. In this research, a simplistic nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon material (HPC-A) was developed through a one-step carbonization and activation process and was successfully hot-pressed on the carbon cloth (CC) substrate. This process fabricates capacitive bioanodes (HPC-A-CC) that can enhance electricity generation and storage in MFCs. The as-prepared HPC-A-CC anode delivered a power density of 2043.6 mW·m-2 and a cumulative total charge (Qm) of 426.4 ± 13.4C·m-2 at each cycle, which was 2.1 and 34.8 times higher than that of the plain CC anode, respectively. This was a result of the hierarchical and interconnected porous structure, improved hydrophilic surface, and increased number of active centers which host the bacteria for enhanced electron transfer. Electrochemical measurements indicated the superior electrochemical activity and capacitive behavior of the HPC-A-CC anode. Furthermore, biofilm analysis revealed that the HPC-A-CC biofilm exhibited higher cell viability and a more uniform spatial distribution. These findings not only demonstrate the potential of HPC-A-CC for power enhancement in MFCs but also provide a feasible solution to the problem of power generation and demand mismatch in MFC applications.

To improve their cost-effectiveness, one focus of industry and research is the development of processes with other heat transfer fluids than the currently used synthetic oil. One option is the utilization of water/steam in the solar field, the so-called direct steam generation (DSG). Several previous studies promoted the economic potential of DSG technology [1–3]. Analyses’ results showed that live steam parameters of up to 500°C and 120 bars are most promising and could lead to a reduction of the levelized electricity cost (LEC) of about 11% [4]. However, all of these studies only considered plants without thermal energy storage (TES). Therefore, a system analysis including integrated TES was performed by Flagsol GmbH and DLR together with Solar Millennium AG, Schott CSP GmbH and Senior Bergho¨fer GmbH, all Germany. Two types of plants are analyzed and compared in detail: a power plant with synthetic oil and a DSG power plant. The design of the synthetic oil plant is very similar to the Spanish Andasol plants [5] and includes a molten salt two-tank storage system. The DSG plant has main steam parameters of 500 °C and 112 bars and uses phase change material (PCM) for the latent and molten salt for the sensible part of the TES system. To enable comparability, both plants share the same gross electric turbine capacity of 100 MWel, the same TES capacity of nine hours of full load equivalent and the same solar multiple of the collector field of about two. This paper describes and compares both plants’ design, performance and investment. Based on these results, the LEC are calculated and the DSG plant’s potential is evaluated. One key finding is that with currently proposed DSG storage costs, the LEC of a DSG plant could be higher than those of a synthetic oil plant. When considering a plant without TES on the other hand, the DSG system could reduce the LEC. This underlines the large influence of TES and the still needed effort in the development of a commercial storage system for DSG.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2009Publisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Eleodor Nichita;Abstract Space–time kinetics calculations for CANDU ® 1 reactors are routinely performed using the Improved Quasistatic (IQS) method. The IQS method calculates kinetics parameters such as the effective delayed-neutron fraction and generation time using adjoint weighting. In the current implementation of IQS, the direct flux, as well as the adjoint, is calculated using a two-group cell-homogenized reactor model which is inadequate for capturing the effect of the softer energy spectrum of the delayed neutrons. Additionally, there may also be fine spatial effects that are lost because the intra-cell adjoint shape is ignored. The purpose of this work is to compare the kinetics parameters calculated using the two-group cell-homogenized model with those calculated using lattice-level fine-group heterogeneous adjoint weighting and to assess whether the differences are large enough to justify further work on incorporating lattice-level adjoint weighting into the IQS method. A second goal is to evaluate whether the use of a fine-group cell-homogenized lattice-level adjoint, such as is the current practice for Light Water Reactors (LWRs), is sufficient to capture the lattice effects in question. It is found that, for CANDU lattices, the generation time is almost unaffected by the type of adjoint used to calculate it, but that the effective delayed-neutron fraction is affected by the type of adjoint used. The effective delayed-neutron fraction calculated using the two-group cell-homogenized adjoint is 5.2% higher than the “best” effective delayed-neutron fraction value obtained using the detailed lattice-level fine-group heterogeneous adjoint. The effective delayed-neutron fraction calculated using the fine-group cell-homogenized adjoint is only 1.7% higher than the “best” effective delayed-neutron fraction value but is still not equal to it. This situation is different from that encountered in LWRs where weighting by a fine-group cell-homogenized adjoint is sufficient to calculate the correct effective delayed-neutron fraction. It is concluded that lattice-level weighting with a detailed fine-group heterogeneous adjoint is desirable for the correct calculation of the effective delayed-neutron fraction in CANDU lattices.

In this investigation, the detailed chemical kinetic mechanism was engaged to numerically study the auto-ignition characteristics of hydrogen-enriched methane under engine-relevant conditions. Compared with the experimental data, the USC Mech 2.0 mechanism obtained the closest agreement, and it was adopted in the sensitivity analysis, the rate of production (ROP) analysis and the reaction pathway analysis. Results showed that at high temperature and high pressure, the ignition delay times (IDs) of CH4/H2 fuel blends reduce significantly (by two orders of magnitude at most) with rising hydrogen fraction, but the decline rate is not so obvious (within 37.3%) at low temperature. The sensitivity analysis indicated that at high temperature the reaction (R1) and reactions (R2, R3) promote each other while at low temperature only the reaction (R3) unilaterally facilitates the reaction (R12). The ROP analysis implied that the decrease of IDs of methane by hydrogen addition is realized through increasing the H, O, and OH radical production. Interestingly, the IDs for CH4/H2 fuel blends show different trends at different temperature, which decrease (by 47.5% at most) at low temperature but increase (by 132.7% at most) at high temperature as the equivalence ratio rises. The sensitivity analysis showed that the ignition kinetics for CH4/H2 fuel blends more depend on the CH4 concentration at low temperature but oxygen concentration at high temperature. This investigation not only supplements the fundamental combustion studies of CH4/H2 fuel blends in elevated pressures, but also reveals the influence mechanism of hydrogen addition and equivalence ratio on the IDs of CH4/H2 fuel blends at high pressure. More importantly, it may offer fundamental insights for the control of knocking combustion of spark-ignition (SI) engine.

Global fossil fuel reserves are declining due to differential uses, especially for power generation. Everybody can help to do their bit for the environment by using solar energy. Geographically, Bangladesh is a potential zone for harnessing solar energy. In March 2021, the renewable generation capacity in Bangladesh amounted to 722.592 MW, including 67.6% from solar, 31.84% from hydro, and 0.55% from other energy sources, including wind, biogas, and biomass, where 488.662 MW of power originated from over 6 million installed solar power systems. Concurrently, over 42% of rural people still suffer from a lack of electricity, where solar energy can play a vital role. This paper highlights the present status of various forms of solar energy progress in Bangladesh, such as solar parks, solar rooftops, solar irrigation, solar charging stations, solar home systems, solar-powered telecoms, solar street lights, and solar drinking water, which can be viable alternative sources of energy. This review will help decision-makers and investors realize Bangladesh’s up-to-date solar energy scenario and plan better for the development of a sustainable society.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2023Publisher:Frontiers Media SA Authors: Gao, Qingyu; Li, Zhifeng; Zhu, Yuxiang; The accelerator-driven sub-critical system is driven by external neutron sources, which are generated by the spallation reaction and maintain the stable operation of the sub-critical core, while the external neutron source increases the complexity of reactor neutron kinetic processes.
