AbstractThe brief exposure of recently ovulated mouse oocytes to a dilute solution of ethanol in vitro for 1, 3, or 5 min induced a uniform high incidence of parthenogenetic activation. The majority of parthenogenones developed a single haploid pronucleus after the extrusion of a second polar body. The proportionate incidence of this parthenogenetic class was significantly reduced as the duration of ethanol exposure increased from 1 min to 5 min. There was a concomitant increase in the incidence of parthenogenones that developed two haploid pronuclei following failure of extrusion of the second polar body. Cytogenetic analysis of the ethanol‐induced single‐pronuclear haploid parthenogenones at metaphase of the first cleavage division clearly demonstrated that a significant proportion were aneuploid. The incidence of aneuploidy observed was directly related to the duration of ethanol exposure. G‐band analysis of the aneuploid metaphases revealed that the chromosomes were not randomly involved in the malsegregation events. This observation may be a reflection of the relationship of particular chromosomes to the meiotic spindle apparatus rather than on any specific property of the agent to which they were exposed. It is believed that ethanol disrupts the organisation of cytoskeletal elements and, in particular, interferes with the processes of chromosome segregation at the second meiotic division.

Optical potential energy landscapes created using acousto-optical deflectors are characterized via solvent-driven colloidal particles. The full potential energy of both single optical traps and complex landscapes composed of multiple overlapping traps are determined using a simple force balance argument. The potential of a single trap is shown to be well described by a Gaussian trap with stiffness found to be consistent with those obtained by a thermal equilibrium method. We also obtain directly the depth of the well, which (as with stiffness) varies with laser power. Finally, various complex systems ranging from double-well potentials to random landscapes are generated from individually controlled optical traps. Predictions of these landscapes as a sum of single Gaussian wells are shown to be a good description of experimental results, offering the potential for fully controlled design of optical landscapes, constructed from single optical traps.

Mathini Sellathurai in OpenAIREIn this paper, we investigate the energy harvesting (EH) technique and accordingly design transceivers for a $K$ link multiple-input multiple-output interference channel. Each link consists of two full-duplex (FD) Internet of Things (IoT) nodes exchanging information simultaneously in a bi-directional communication channel. All the nodes suffer from interference, in particular strong self-interference and inter-node interference, due to operating in FD mode and simultaneous transmission at each link, respectively. Further, we divide the received signal at each node into two parts. While one part of the signal is used for information decoding, the other part is used for EH. We jointly design the transmit and receive beamforming vectors and receiver power splitting ratios by minimizing the total transmission power of the system, subject to both signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and EH threshold constraints. Furthermore, the case of multiple-input single-output interference channel is also included for the sake of comparison. We also revisit the above problems for the case when the available channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters is imperfect, where the errors of the CSI are assumed to be norm bounded. Simulation results show that the EH technique can harvest enough energy to support power consumption limited IoT devices by aiding in recharging their respective batteries.

John Kaiser Calautit in OpenAIREAbstract Two office layouts with high and low levels of thermal control were compared, respectively traditional cellular and contemporary open plan offices. The traditional Norwegian practice provided every user with control over a window, blinds, door, and the ability to adjust heating and cooling. Occupants were expected to control their thermal environment to find their own comfort, while air conditioning was operating in the background to ensure the indoor air quality. In contrast, in the British open plan office, limited thermal control was provided through openable windows and blinds only for occupants seated around the perimeter of the building. Centrally operated displacement ventilation was the main thermal control system. Users’ perception of thermal environment was recorded through survey questionnaires, empirical building performance through environmental measurements and thermal control through semi-structured interviews. The Norwegian office had 35% higher user satisfaction and 20% higher user comfort compared to the British open plan office. However, the energy consumption in the British practice was within the benchmark and much lower than the Norwegian office. Overall, a balance between thermal comfort and energy efficiency is required, as either extreme poses difficulties for the other.

The charged-particle production ratios $\bar{p}/p$, $K^-/K^+$, $��^-/��^+$, $(p + \bar{p})/(��^+ + ��^-)$, $(K^+ + K^-)/(��^+ + ��^-)$ and $(p + \bar{p})/(K^+ + K^-)$ are measured with the LHCb detector using $0.3 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ TeV and $1.8 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ and pseudorapidity $��$. The production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all observables. The ratio $\bar{p}/p$ is also considered as a function of rapidity loss, $��y \equiv y_{\rm beam} - y$, and is used to constrain models of baryon transport. Incorrect entries in Table 2 corrected. Significance Women in science face barriers to professional advancement. One of the most important forums for international climate science is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, where there has been a slow increase in the proportion of women authors since the first assessment in 1990. Our survey of more than 100 female Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change authors explores their experience and perceptions, the barriers to their full participation that they identify, and recommendations for improvements. While we find that some women reported a positive experience, others felt women were poorly represented and heard and encountered barriers beyond their gender including race, nationality, command of English, and discipline. The study contributes to the larger literature on gender and science and provides recommendations for greater inclusion.

Abstract The dynamics of isolated-photon plus two-jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. Cross sections are measured as functions of a variety of observables, including angular correlations and invariant masses of the objects in the final state, γ + jet + jet. Measurements are also performed in phase-space regions enriched in each of the two underlying physical mechanisms, namely direct and fragmentation processes. The measurements cover the range of photon (jet) transverse momenta from 150 GeV (100 GeV) to 2 TeV. The tree-level plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Pythia as well as the next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from Sherpa are compared with the measurements. The next-to-leading-order QCD predictions describe the data adequately in shape and normalisation except for regions of phase space such as those with high values of the invariant mass or rapidity separation of the two jets, where the predictions overestimate the data.

In recent decades, the discrete element method (DEM), which models the motion and interaction of individual particles, has become increasingly popular as a computational tool to study and investigate complex particulate systems. To date, considerable scientific advances have been made in the development of the technique, resulting in an explosion of the use of DEM in a myriad of industrial and scientific applications. However, careful validation of simulation results with closely matching experimental data are still rather rare and it is vital to establish DEM’s capability to produce satisfactory quantitative predictions. The popularity of DEM can be discerned from the rapidly increasing number of DEM related papers being offered at the leading international conference on the bulk handling of particulate solids. This Special Issue comprises a series of papers that have been selected from the 6th International Conference for Conveying and Handling of Particulate Solids (CHoPS 2009) which was held in Brisbane, Australia, in August 2009. Gonçalo dos Reis in OpenAIREFeature-based machine learning models for capacity and internal resistance (IR) curve prediction have been researched extensively in literature due to their high accuracy and generalization power. Most such models work within the high frequency of data availability regime, e.g., voltage response recorded every 1–4 s. Outside premium fee cloud monitoring solutions, data may be recorded once every 3, 5 or 10 min. In this low-data regime, there are little to no models available. This literature gap is addressed here via a novel methodology, underpinned by strong mathematical guarantees, called ‘path signature’. This work presents a feature-based predictive model for capacity fade and IR rise curves from only constant-current (CC) discharge voltage corresponding to the first 100 cycles. Included is a comprehensive feature analysis for the model via a relevance, redundancy, and complementarity feature trade-off mechanism. The ability to predict from subsampled ‘CC voltage at discharge’ data is investigated using different time steps ranging from 4 s to 4 min. It was discovered that voltage measurements taken at the end of every 4 min are enough to generate features for curve prediction with End of Life (EOL) and its corresponding IR values predicted with a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of approximately 13.2% and 2.1%, respectively. Our model under higher frequency (4 s) produces an improved accuracy with EOL predicted with an MAPE of 10%. Full implementation code publicly available.
