Carlos Duque-Daza in OpenAIREFilm cooling performance was evaluated numerically for three mainstream Reynolds numbers and four blowing ratios (BR). A computational model based on finite volume discretization was used to solve an incompressible and transient flow over a NACA 4412 cascade vane. Several passive scalars were included in the model to evaluate the condition of adiabatic temperature and constant temperature for the surface vane. For the adiabatic temperature condition, the film effectiveness mainly depends on the jet trajectory and recirculation zones. For the constant temperature condition, the net heat flux reduction (NHFR) varies according to the boundary layer separation and reattachment. Consequently, misleading conclusions could be drawn if only one of the two approaches is adopted. For instance, the mainstream Reynolds number Re∞ = 3615 reached a maximum average effectiveness lower than 0.3 with an average NHFR of 0.25. However, for Re∞ = 10,845 the maximum average effectiveness was close to 0.45, but with negative average NHFR values. This finding demonstrates the need to explore new indicators like jet trajectory, convective coefficient and skin friction coefficient, as presented in this paper.

A fifth-order dynamic continuous model of a linear induction motor (LIM), without considering “end effects” and considering attraction force, was developed. The attraction force is necessary in considering the dynamic analysis of the mechanically loaded linear induction motor. To obtain the circuit parameters of the LIM, a physical system was implemented in the laboratory with a Rapid Prototype System. The model was created by modifying the traditional three-phase model of a Y-connected rotary induction motor in a d–q stationary reference frame. The discrete-time LIM model was obtained through the continuous time model solution for its application in simulations or computational solutions in order to analyze nonlinear behaviors and for use in discrete time control systems. To obtain the solution, the continuous time model was divided into a current-fed linear induction motor third-order model, where the current inputs were considered as pseudo-inputs, and a second-order subsystem that only models the currents of the primary with voltages as inputs. For the discrete time model, the current-fed model is discretized by solving a set of differential equations, and the subsystem is discretized by a first-order Taylor series. Finally, a comparison of the continuous and discrete time model behaviors was shown graphically in order to validate the discrete time model.

This research presents an efficient energy management system (EMS) for battery energy storage systems (BESS) connected to monopolar DC distribution networks which considers a high penetration of photovoltaic generation. The optimization model that expresses the EMS system with the BESS and renewable generation can be classified as a nonlinear programming (NLP) model. This study reformulates the NLP model as a recursive convex approximation (RCA) model. The proposed RCA model is developed by applying a linear approximation for the voltage magnitudes only at nodes that include constant power loads. The nodes with BESS and renewables are approximated through the relaxation of their voltage magnitude. Numerical results obtained in the monopolar version of a 33-bus system, which included three generators and three BESS, demonstrate the effectiveness of the RCA reformulation when compared to the solution of the exact NLP model via combinatorial optimization techniques. Additional simulations considering wind power and diesel generators allow one to verify the effectiveness of the proposed RCA in dealing with the efficient operation of distributed energy resources in monopolar DC networks via recursive convex programming.

Leal Filho, W in OpenAIRE© 2019 This research aims to evaluate the engineering students' perception regarding sustainability. For this, a survey was developed based on sustainability parameters from a detailed analysis of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance (BICG). The parameters were initially divided into seven groups: Financial and Productivity Aspects (FPA); Concern With Employees (CWE); Support for Local Communities (SLC); Ethical and Corporate Governance Issues (ECI); Environmental Aspects (ENA); Sustainable Aspects in the Operations Network (SON); Customers, Development of New Products and Services (CPS). The survey was conducted with engineering undergraduate students from two Brazilian universities. The data were analyzed through structural equation modeling technique, namely the PLS-SEM algorithm. The collected 162 answers enabled the validation of the model tested, and showed that the students, in general, do not consider SLC and CWE when they are analyzing sustainability. Additionally, the most important construct was the CPS. This is an exploratory study and we believe that these findings may contribute to expand the debate about the sustainability insertion in engineering courses, helping educators in their didactic activities. There were not found similar studies in the literature, which highlight the originality of the research. The statistical validation of the results and the contribution to expand the debate regarding sustainability in engineering education justify the value of this study.

Hernando A. Yepes in OpenAIREAbstract The laminar burning velocity of syngas mixtures has been studied by various researches. However, most of these studies have been conducted in atmospheric conditions at sea level. In the present study, the effect of sub atmospheric pressure was evaluated on the laminar burning velocity for a mixture of H 2 , CO and N 2 (20:20:60 vol%) in real sub atmospheric condition. The measurements was conducted in an altitude of 2130 m.a.s.l (0.766 atm) and 21 m.a.s.l (0.994 atm) to evaluate the effect of pressure, the temperature and relative humidity were controlled using an air conditioning unit and was maintained in 295 ± 1 K and 62.6 ± 2.7% respectively. The Flames were generated using contoured slot-type nozzle burner, and an ICCD camera was used to capture chemiluminescence emitted by OH∗-CH∗ radicals present in the flame and thus obtain the flame front and determinate the laminar burning velocity using the angle method. The experimental results were compared with numerical calculations, conducted using the detailed mechanisms of Li et al. and the GRI-Mech 3.0. It was found that the laminar burning velocity increases at lower pressure, for an equivalence ratio of 1.1, the laminar burning velocity increases by almost 23% respect to the sea level conditions.

This paper presents a decision support system for power load forecast and the learning of influence patterns of the socio-economic and climatic factors on the power consumption based on mathematical and computational intelligenge methods, with the purpose of defining the future power consumption of a given region, as well as to provide a mean for the analysis of correlations between the power consumption and these factors. Here we use a linear modelo of regression for the forecasting, also presenting a comparative analysis with neural networks, to prove its efectiveness; and also Bayesian networks for the learning of causal relationships from the data.

The DC-link capacitor is one of the components that are more prone to faults in energy-distributed systems based on voltage source inverters. A predictive maintenance approach should allow to foresee the risk of an unexpected system shutdown. In this study, a two-stage diagnostic approach that is aimed at determining the health status of the DC-link capacitor in a single-phase grid-connected PV system was proposed. The equivalent series resistance (ESR) and the capacitance (C) values were used as indicators in the estimation of the degradation stage. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to estimate the impedance curve of the DC-link capacitor, and a multi-fitting algorithm allowed us to determine the ESR and C parameters. A comparison between the estimated values C and ESR and the nominal values was used to quantify the fault severity. It was demonstrated that the EIS allowed the determination of the capacitor impedance regardless of the actual operating conditions of the photovoltaic generator, such as during irradiance changes and with the maximum power point algorithm turned off. By using the capacitor simplified model and a multi-fitting algorithm, the C and ESR values were estimated with an error that was lower than 1%. An analysis of the hardware required to implement the proposed approach in real applications by achieving the desired accuracy was also proposed.

Fino, D. in OpenAIREAppropriate waste management in emerging economies like Colombia should be an asset for the overall sustainability. In the Orange Peel Waste case, incineration and Anaerobic Digestion are challenging solutions for the orange juice agro-industrial sector for avoiding the landfill, which is the conventional practice. However, these alternatives should be assessed in order to determine their feasibility. This paper aims to understand if incineration and Anaerobic Digestion are potential alternatives to landfill form a techno-economic and environmentally perspective. To this aim, a comparative Life Cycle Assessment was carried out in four scenarios. In the first scenario coal and landfill are used as source of energy and landfill disposal in the actual orange juice process. In the second scenario, the peels are incinerated to avoid landfill and reduce the need for coal. The third scenario includes the valorization of the peels by means of Anaerobic Digestion which produces biogas for the plant energy requirements. In the fourth scenario, apart from the energy from biogas, the digestate becomes a fertilizer for use in the orange crops. The results revealed that scenario III and IV are environmentally friendly options compared to Scenario I, but they incur higher costs than Scenario II. Carbon footprint found that 1.55 kg of CO2 are saving when coal substitution is reduced from 0.493 kg in SI to 0.279 kg in SII. Therefore, Scenario II is more suitable for the Colombian socioeconomic reality since Scenario II is not only techno-environmentally achievable, but also economically feasible. The methodology used in this case study could be applied to other countries or small and medium scale technologies and could also be useful for the scientific community, enterprises and policy-makers. Jun Lu in OpenAIREAbstractEfforts to enable fast charging and high energy density lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) are hampered by the trade‐off nature of the traditional electrode design: increasing the areal capacity usually comes with sacrificing the fast charge transfer. Here a single‐layer chunky particle electrode design is reported, where red‐phosphorus active material is embedded in nanochannels of vertically aligned graphene (red‐P/VAG) assemblies. Such an electrode design addresses the sluggish charge transfer stemming from the high tortuosity and inner particle/electrode resistance of traditional electrode architectures consisting of randomly stacked active particles. The vertical ion‐transport nanochannels and electron‐transfer conductive nanowalls of graphene confine the direction of charge transfer to minimize the transfer distance, and the incomplete filling of nanochannels in the red‐P/VAG composite buffers volume change locally, thus avoiding the variation of electrodes thickness during cycling. The single‐layer chunky particle electrode displays a high areal capacity (5.6 mAh cm−2), which is the highest among the reported fast‐charging battery chemistries. Paired with a high‐loading LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) cathode, a pouch cell shows stable cycling with high energy and power densities. Such a single‐layer chunky particle electrode design can be extended to other advanced battery systems and boost the development of LIBs with fast‐charging capability and high energy density.

Gas turbine power plants have been widely studied, and as a result the negative effects on their output power and thermal efficiency have been known when operating in atmospheric conditions exceeding ISO conditions. For this reason, different technologies and methodologies have been implemented, aiming to increase the output power and improve the thermal efficiency. Unfortunately, the lack of operational parameters for this system limited its characterization and implementation of strategies to improve its performance. Advanced exergetic and exergoeconomic analyses have been applied to improve energy and economic performance in steam injection gas turbine (STIG) cycle power plants with air cooling with a compression refrigeration machine. Results shows that the main sources of irreversibilities and higher costs are in the Combustion Chamber (CC), Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) and Gas Turbine (GT). From these components, the components of the HRSG and GT have the greatest potential for improvement, and this can be achieved by improving the overall configuration of the system, due to the fact that the destruction of exogenous exergy is in more significant measure avoidable. While the higher costs of investment can be reduced in the Combustion Chamber and Gas Turbine.
