Chengfang Pang in OpenAIREAbstract Sustainability is an important and difficult consideration for the stakeholders/decision-makers when planning a biofuel supply network. In this paper, a Mixed-Integer Non-linear Programming (MINLP) model was developed with the aim to help the stakeholders/decision-maker to select the most sustainable design. In the proposed model, the emergy sustainability index of the whole biodiesel supply networks in a life cycle perspective is employed as the measure of the sustainability, and multiple feedstocks, multiple transport modes, multiple regions for biodiesel production and multiple distribution centers can be considered. After describing the process and mathematic framework of the model, an illustrative case was studied and demonstrated that the proposed methodology is feasible for finding the most sustainable design and planning of biodiesel supply chains.

Lai, Wei in OpenAIREEnergy storage systems (ESS) are widely used in active distribution networks (ADN) to smoothen the drastic fluctuation of renewable energy sources (RES). In order to enhance the scalability and flexibility of ESS, a virtual energy storage system (VESS), which is composed of battery energy storage system (BESS), RES as well as flexible loads (FL), is developed in this paper to realize the functionalities of ESS in more cost-effective way in ADN. Aiming at achieving voltage regulation, dynamic pricing strategies based on system voltage condition are designed for VESS. A distributed real-time power management model containing dynamic pricing strategies is proposed to accomplish the voltage regulation and economic power sharing in VESS. Moreover, a set of distributed algorithms, over time-varying unbalanced directed networks, are designed for dynamic pricing strategies and optimal power management model. Furthermore, the convergence property, optimality and system voltage stability are explained by detailed mathematical analysis. Three various case studies which were ran on a real time digital simulator (OPAL-RT OP5600) were designed to validate the effectiveness of the strategy. Finally, simulation results show that the economic power dispatch and voltage regulation are achieved among VESS simultaneously, even in the presence of time-varying directed and unbalanced communication networks.

Abstract This work reports a detailed experimental study that is aimed at investigating the Thermal Energy Storage (TES) performance of cementitious systems containing Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials (MPCMs). New spherical-shaped test specimens for TES measurements were produced following an innovative casting technique, developed at the Institut fur Werkstoffe im Bauwesen – TU Darmstadt. Three water-to-cement ratios and three MPCMs volume fractions, leading to a total of nine different mixtures, were investigated. The thermal experiments were accompanied by mechanical tests to observe the effect MPCMs have on the resulting strengths in both compression and bending. The analysis and discussion of the TES results are employed for calibrating an enthalpy-based model. The experimental data have been applied to evaluate the corresponding temperature-based material parameters like specific heat, conductivity, or more in general, the energy storage capacity of a system under transient heat conduction conditions.

A multi-objective linear programming model optimizes fleet composition, fleet development, and fleet employment for a 10-year planning horizon. Model inputs include flight plan data, operational, technical, and cost parameters, existing fleet aircraft, and the availability of new, more efficient aircraft. The model determines trade-offs between an economically and an environmentally optimal fleet plan depending on user-defined weightings. Varying these weightings provides alternative Pareto-optimal fleet plans. An example for a major European airline shows that it would have to deviate by approximately 3% from its economic optimum to achieve a 6% improvement in the environmental goal. The study provides insights for policy makers when setting environmental targets for airlines and developing mechanisms to encourage environmental commitment.

Wolfgang G. Bessler in OpenAIREAbstract A detailed computational model of a direct-flame solid oxide fuel cell (DFFC) is presented. The DFFC is based on a fuel-rich methane–air flame stabilized on a flat-flame burner and coupled to a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The model consists of an elementary kinetic description of the premixed methane–air flame, a stagnation-point flow description of the coupled heat and mass transport within the gas phase, an elementary kinetic description of the electrochemistry, as well as heat, mass and charge transport within the SOFC. Simulated current–voltage characteristics show excellent agreement with experimental data published earlier (Kronemayer et al., 2007 [10] ). The model-based analysis of loss processes reveals that ohmic resistance in the current collection wires dominates polarization losses, while electronic loss currents in the mixed conducting electrolyte have only little influence on the polarized cell. The model was used to propose an optimized cell design. Based on this analysis, power densities of above 200 mW cm −2 can be expected.

Friedrich, Kaspar Andreas in OpenAIREIn order to provide insight into the interfacial relationships at fuel cell electrodes, a measuring technique based on a scanning tunneling microscope working in an electrochemical cell has been developed. The structure of model electrodes consisting of carbon supported Pt and ionomer mixtures as well as MEA electrode surfaces is imaged by the electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope (EC-STM) from microscale to nanoscale. Images with subnanometer resolution are obtained indicating that some ordering of the particles on the carbon support is present in the model system and in the MEA. It is demonstrated that in both cases nanometer structures can be imaged reliably and that the interface is rather clean and active under reaction conditions. In addition, a technique has been developed to measure the local reactivity by using the STM tip as a sensor electrode for the ORR.

Thin films of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) were prepared by sulfurization of multilayered precursors of ZnS, Cu, and Sn, changing the relative amounts to obtain CZTS layers with different compositions. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy, and SEM were used for structural, compositional, and morphological analyses, respectively. XRD quantitative phase analysis provides the amount of spurious phases and information on Sn-site occupancy. The optical properties were investigated by spectrophotometric measurements and Photothermal Deflection Spectroscopy. These films show a clear dependence of the optical and microstructural properties on the tin content. As the tin content increases we found: (i) an increase in both crystalline domain and grain size, (ii) an abrupt increase of the energy gap of about 150 meV, from 1.48 to 1.63 eV, and (iii) a decrease of sub-gap absorption up to two orders of magnitude. A 3D model is developed to describe an anode-supported planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), by Ansys/Fluent evaluating reactions including methane steam reforming (MSR)/water-gas shift (WGSR) reactions in thick anode layer and H2-O2/CO-O2 electrochemical reactions in anode active layer, coupled with heat, mass species, momentum, and ion/electron charges transport processes in SOFC. The predicted results indicate that electron/ion exchange appears in the very thin region in active layers (0.018 mm in anode and 0.01 mm in cathode), based on three phase boundary, operating temperature and concentration of reactants (mainly H2). Active polarization happening in active layers dominates over concentration and ohmic losses. High gradient of current density exists near interface between electrode and solid conductor due to the block by gas channel. It is also found the reaction rates of MSR and WGSR along main flow direction and cell thickness direction decrease due to low concentration of fuel (CH4) caused by mass consumption. With increasing operating temperature from 978 K to 1088 K, the current density and the reaction rate of MSR are increased by 10.8% and 5.4%, respectively. While ion current density is 52.9% higher than in standard case, and H2 is consumed by 5.1% more when ion conductivity is doubled. CO-O2 has been considered in charge transfer reaction in anode active layer and it is found that the current density and species distributions are not sensitive, but WGSR reaction will be forced backwards to supply more CO for CO-O2 electrochemical reaction.
