The electro-hydraulic servo pump control system (EHSPCS) is a volume control system that uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with a fixed displacement pump to directly drive and control the hydraulic cylinder. The energy transmission law of the system is very complicated due to the transformation of electrical, mechanical and hydraulic energy as well as other energy fields, and qualitative analysis of the energy transfer efficiency is difficult. Energy transfer analysis of the EHSPCS under different working conditions and loads is proposed in this paper. First, the energy flow transfer mechanism was analyzed, and the mathematical and energy transfer models of the key components of the system were established to explore the energy characteristic state transition rule. Second, a power bond diagram model was built, its state equation and state matrix were deduced, and a system simulation model was built. Finally, combined with the EHSPCS experimental platform, simulation experiments were carried out on the dynamic position following and steady-state position holding conditions of the system, and the variation rules of the power of each energy characteristic state and the system energy transfer efficiency under different loads were obtained. The research results provide a foundation for the study of power matching and energy-saving mechanism of the EHSPCS.

With the continuous development of intelligent transportation technologies, new ways of energy usage in transportation continue to emerge, which puts forward new requirements for the planning and design of energy systems. However, comprehensive analyses on the characteristics of transportation energy systems and the development trend of energy usage patterns brought by intelligent technologies have rarely been carried out so far. This paper explores this subject by reviewing the recent development and utilization of intelligent technologies in the transportation system and its impacts on energy usage. This review is carried out from three aspects, covering the representative intelligent transportation and energy technologies on vehicles, infrastructures and systems. The scope is limited within road, railway and water transport domains, with a focus on the recent developments in China as a representative. In terms of vehicles, the development trend of the power systems for new energy vehicles, the characteristics of energy usages in electric vehicles and the effects on energy saving and emission reduction are summarized. In terms of infrastructures, new technologies on smart road, smart port, intelligent railway energy system and the usage of clear energy on electric grid for transportation are reviewed, with the consideration of their potential influences on energy usages and the energy consumption characteristics of typical facilities also being analyzed. As for the transportation system, this review has focused on intelligent and connected transportation systems, train control and autonomous systems, and intelligent shipping system, with the emphasis on the energy saving and emission reduction effects of applying these intelligent technologies. The overall development trend of the transportation energy system is then analyzed based on the above materials, in particular, the future energy usage patterns in transportation system are given and the major challenges and obstacles approaching the future scenarios are also identified.

Coal will continue to be the main energy source in China for the immediate future, although the environmental pollution and ecological impacts of each stage in the full life cycle of coal mining, transportation, and combustion generate large quantities of external costs. The Late Permian coals in southwestern (SW) China usually contain high amounts of fluorine (F), arsenic (As), and ash, which together with high-F clays cause abnormally high levels of endemic fluorosis, As poisoning, and lung cancer in areas where coal is mined and burned. In this paper, we estimate the external costs of the life cycle of coal. The results show that the externalities of coal in SW China are estimated at USD 73.5 billion or 284.3 USD/t, which would have accounted for 6.5 % of the provincial GDP in this area in 2018. The external cost of human health accounts for 87.2% of the total external costs, of which endemic skeletal fluorosis diseases and related lung cancers have the most important impact. Our study provides a more precise estimate of externalities compared with its counterparts in other provinces in China. Therefore, several policy recommendations would be proposed to internalize the external cost.

A square cylinder with a V-shaped groove on the windward side in the piezoelectric cantilever flow-induced vibration energy harvester (FIVEH) is presented to improve the output power of the energy harvester and reduce the critical velocity of the system, aiming at the self-powered supply of low energy consumption devices in the natural environment with low wind speed. Seven groups of galloping piezoelectric energy harvesters (GPEHs) were designed and tested in a wind tunnel by gradually changing the angle of two symmetrical sharp angles of the V-groove. The GPEH with a sharp angle of 45° was selected as the optimal energy harvester. Its output power was 61% more than the GPEH without the V-shaped groove. The more accurate mathematical model was made by using the sparse identification method to calculate the empirical parameters of fluid based on the experimental data and the theoretical model. The critical velocity of the galloping system was calculated by analyzing the local Hopf bifurcation of the model. The minimum critical velocity was 2.53 m/s smaller than the maximum critical velocity at 4.69 m/s. These results make the GPEH with a V-shaped groove (GPEH-V) more suitable to harvest wind energy efficiently in a low wind speed environment.

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) have been conducted to study the response of initially laminar spherical premixed methane–air flame kernels to successively higher turbulence intensities at five different equivalence ratios. The numerical experiments include a 16-species/25-step skeletal mechanism for methane oxidation and a multicomponent molecular transport model. Highly turbulent conditions (with integral Reynolds numbers up to 4513) have been accessed. The effect of turbulence on the physical properties of the flame, in particular its consumption speed Sc, which is an interesting measure of the turbulent flame speed ST has been investigated. Local quenching events are increasingly observed for highly turbulent conditions, particularly for lean mixtures. The obtained results qualitatively confirm the expected trend regarding correlations between u′/SL and the consumption speed: Sc first increases, roughly linearly, with u′/SL (low turbulence zone), then levels off (bending zone) before decreasing again (quenching limit) for too intense turbulence. For a fixed value of u′/SL, Sc/SL varies with the mixture equivalence ratio, showing that additional parameters should probably enter phenomenological expressions relating these two quantities.

This paper proposes a polygeneration system based on a multi-input chemical looping combustion system, which generates methanol and electricity, through the use of natural gas and coal. In this system, the chemical looping hydrogen (CLH) production system and the coal-based methanol production system are integrated. A high quality fuel, natural gas, is used to improve the conversion ratio of coal. The Gibbs energy of the two kinds of fuels is fully used. Benefitting from the chemical looping process, 27% CO2 can be captured without energy penalty. With the same outputs of methanol and electricity, the energy savings ratio of the new system is about 12%. Based on the exergy analyses, it is disclosed that the integration of synthetic utilization of natural gas and coal plays a significant role in reducing the exergy destruction of the new system. The promising results obtained in this paper may lead to a clean coal technology that will utilize natural gas and coal more efficiently and economically.

This study presents a comprehensive three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the pre-cooling process of a Type B LNG tank using various refrigerants, including liquid nitrogen (LN), nitrogen gas (NG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), boil-off gas (BOG), and their combinations. The simulation model accounts for phase change (through the mixture multiphase model), convective heat transfer, and conjugate heat exchange between the fluid and the tank structure. The results indicate that liquid nitrogen is the most efficient refrigerant, achieving the highest cooling rate through both latent and sensible heat. LNG also demonstrated a relatively high cooling rate, 79% of that of liquid nitrogen. Gas-only pre-cooling schemes relying solely on sensible heat exhibited slower cooling rates, with BOG achieved 79.4% of the cooling rate of NG. Mixed refrigerants such as NG + LN and BOG + LNG can achieve comparable, while slightly slower, cooling than the pure liquid refrigerants, outperforming gas-only strategies. A further assessment of the heat transfer coefficient suggests the mixed cooling schemes have almost identical heat transfer coefficient on the inner tank surface to the liquid cooling scheme, over 5% higher than the gas refrigerants. The study also highlighted the uneven temperature distribution within the tank due to the bulkhead’s blockage effect, which can induce significant thermal stress and potentially compromise structural integrity. Mixed schemes exhibit thermal gradients higher than those of gas schemes but lower than those of liquid schemes, while achieving cooling speeds comparable to liquid schemes if the inlet velocity of the refrigerants is properly configured. These findings offer valuable insights for developing safer and more efficient pre-cooling procedures for Type B LNG tanks and similar cryogenic storage tanks.

The biogas production technology has improved over the last years for the aim of reducing the costs of the process, increasing the biogas yields, and minimizing the greenhouse gas emissions. To obtain a stable and efficient biogas production, there are several design considerations and operational parameters to be taken into account. Besides, adapting the process to unanticipated conditions can be achieved by adequate monitoring of various operational parameters. This paper reviews the research that has been conducted over the last years. This review paper summarizes the developments in biogas design and operation, while highlighting the main factors that affect the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion process. The study’s outcomes revealed that the optimum operational values of the main parameters may vary from one biogas plant to another. Additionally, the negative conditions that should be avoided while operating a biogas plant were identified.

A new non-pillar mining technology, gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC), different from the conventional gob-side entry retaining formed by a roadside filling support, is introduced in this study. In the new technology, roof cutting is conducted so that the roof plate forms a short cantilever beam structure within a certain range above the retained entry, thus changing the stress boundary condition of the roof structure. To explore the deformation characteristics of the roof under this special condition, a short cantilever beam mechanical model was established and solved using energy theory and displacement variational methods. Meanwhile, a theoretical and analytical control solution for roof deformation was obtained and verified via field-measured results. Based on the aforementioned calculation, the relationship between the roof deformation and main influence parameters was explored. It was concluded that the rotation of the upper main roof and width of the retained entry had the most significant impacts on roof deformation. Bolt and cable support and temporary support in the entry had a non-obvious influence on the roof deformation and could not prevent the given deformation that was caused by the rotation of the upper main roof. Based on comprehensive theoretical analysis and calculation results, ideas and countermeasures to control short cantilever roof deformation—that is, designing a reasonable height of roof cutting and a controlled width of retaining entry—were proposed and tested. Field monitoring shows that the entry control effects were satisfactory.

The focus is on enhancing the passive heat absorption and heat storage efficiency of the device and its influence on the thermal environment of the greenhouse. In order to improve the heat absorption and storage efficiency of the heat exchanger device and its impact on the greenhouse thermal environment, experimental comparative analysis was conducted using air, water, and phase-change materials as working fluids inside the pipes. Through a combination of experiments and simulations, it was verified that the heat exchanger device is capable of actively regulating the greenhouse thermal environment. The results show that heat exchangers of all three types of working fluids can effectively improve the stability of soil temperature and play a “shifting the peak and filling the valley” role in regulating the indoor air temperature while positively regulating the relative humidity of the air. Notably, when the working fluid is a phase-change material, it has the most significant impact on the thermal environment of the greenhouse.

The electro-hydraulic servo pump control system (EHSPCS) is a volume control system that uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with a fixed displacement pump to directly drive and control the hydraulic cylinder. The energy transmission law of the system is very complicated due to the transformation of electrical, mechanical and hydraulic energy as well as other energy fields, and qualitative analysis of the energy transfer efficiency is difficult. Energy transfer analysis of the EHSPCS under different working conditions and loads is proposed in this paper. First, the energy flow transfer mechanism was analyzed, and the mathematical and energy transfer models of the key components of the system were established to explore the energy characteristic state transition rule. Second, a power bond diagram model was built, its state equation and state matrix were deduced, and a system simulation model was built. Finally, combined with the EHSPCS experimental platform, simulation experiments were carried out on the dynamic position following and steady-state position holding conditions of the system, and the variation rules of the power of each energy characteristic state and the system energy transfer efficiency under different loads were obtained. The research results provide a foundation for the study of power matching and energy-saving mechanism of the EHSPCS.

With the continuous development of intelligent transportation technologies, new ways of energy usage in transportation continue to emerge, which puts forward new requirements for the planning and design of energy systems. However, comprehensive analyses on the characteristics of transportation energy systems and the development trend of energy usage patterns brought by intelligent technologies have rarely been carried out so far. This paper explores this subject by reviewing the recent development and utilization of intelligent technologies in the transportation system and its impacts on energy usage. This review is carried out from three aspects, covering the representative intelligent transportation and energy technologies on vehicles, infrastructures and systems. The scope is limited within road, railway and water transport domains, with a focus on the recent developments in China as a representative. In terms of vehicles, the development trend of the power systems for new energy vehicles, the characteristics of energy usages in electric vehicles and the effects on energy saving and emission reduction are summarized. In terms of infrastructures, new technologies on smart road, smart port, intelligent railway energy system and the usage of clear energy on electric grid for transportation are reviewed, with the consideration of their potential influences on energy usages and the energy consumption characteristics of typical facilities also being analyzed. As for the transportation system, this review has focused on intelligent and connected transportation systems, train control and autonomous systems, and intelligent shipping system, with the emphasis on the energy saving and emission reduction effects of applying these intelligent technologies. The overall development trend of the transportation energy system is then analyzed based on the above materials, in particular, the future energy usage patterns in transportation system are given and the major challenges and obstacles approaching the future scenarios are also identified.

Coal will continue to be the main energy source in China for the immediate future, although the environmental pollution and ecological impacts of each stage in the full life cycle of coal mining, transportation, and combustion generate large quantities of external costs. The Late Permian coals in southwestern (SW) China usually contain high amounts of fluorine (F), arsenic (As), and ash, which together with high-F clays cause abnormally high levels of endemic fluorosis, As poisoning, and lung cancer in areas where coal is mined and burned. In this paper, we estimate the external costs of the life cycle of coal. The results show that the externalities of coal in SW China are estimated at USD 73.5 billion or 284.3 USD/t, which would have accounted for 6.5 % of the provincial GDP in this area in 2018. The external cost of human health accounts for 87.2% of the total external costs, of which endemic skeletal fluorosis diseases and related lung cancers have the most important impact. Our study provides a more precise estimate of externalities compared with its counterparts in other provinces in China. Therefore, several policy recommendations would be proposed to internalize the external cost.

A square cylinder with a V-shaped groove on the windward side in the piezoelectric cantilever flow-induced vibration energy harvester (FIVEH) is presented to improve the output power of the energy harvester and reduce the critical velocity of the system, aiming at the self-powered supply of low energy consumption devices in the natural environment with low wind speed. Seven groups of galloping piezoelectric energy harvesters (GPEHs) were designed and tested in a wind tunnel by gradually changing the angle of two symmetrical sharp angles of the V-groove. The GPEH with a sharp angle of 45° was selected as the optimal energy harvester. Its output power was 61% more than the GPEH without the V-shaped groove. The more accurate mathematical model was made by using the sparse identification method to calculate the empirical parameters of fluid based on the experimental data and the theoretical model. The critical velocity of the galloping system was calculated by analyzing the local Hopf bifurcation of the model. The minimum critical velocity was 2.53 m/s smaller than the maximum critical velocity at 4.69 m/s. These results make the GPEH with a V-shaped groove (GPEH-V) more suitable to harvest wind energy efficiently in a low wind speed environment.

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) have been conducted to study the response of initially laminar spherical premixed methane–air flame kernels to successively higher turbulence intensities at five different equivalence ratios. The numerical experiments include a 16-species/25-step skeletal mechanism for methane oxidation and a multicomponent molecular transport model. Highly turbulent conditions (with integral Reynolds numbers up to 4513) have been accessed. The effect of turbulence on the physical properties of the flame, in particular its consumption speed Sc, which is an interesting measure of the turbulent flame speed ST has been investigated. Local quenching events are increasingly observed for highly turbulent conditions, particularly for lean mixtures. The obtained results qualitatively confirm the expected trend regarding correlations between u′/SL and the consumption speed: Sc first increases, roughly linearly, with u′/SL (low turbulence zone), then levels off (bending zone) before decreasing again (quenching limit) for too intense turbulence. For a fixed value of u′/SL, Sc/SL varies with the mixture equivalence ratio, showing that additional parameters should probably enter phenomenological expressions relating these two quantities.

This paper proposes a polygeneration system based on a multi-input chemical looping combustion system, which generates methanol and electricity, through the use of natural gas and coal. In this system, the chemical looping hydrogen (CLH) production system and the coal-based methanol production system are integrated. A high quality fuel, natural gas, is used to improve the conversion ratio of coal. The Gibbs energy of the two kinds of fuels is fully used. Benefitting from the chemical looping process, 27% CO2 can be captured without energy penalty. With the same outputs of methanol and electricity, the energy savings ratio of the new system is about 12%. Based on the exergy analyses, it is disclosed that the integration of synthetic utilization of natural gas and coal plays a significant role in reducing the exergy destruction of the new system. The promising results obtained in this paper may lead to a clean coal technology that will utilize natural gas and coal more efficiently and economically.

This study presents a comprehensive three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the pre-cooling process of a Type B LNG tank using various refrigerants, including liquid nitrogen (LN), nitrogen gas (NG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), boil-off gas (BOG), and their combinations. The simulation model accounts for phase change (through the mixture multiphase model), convective heat transfer, and conjugate heat exchange between the fluid and the tank structure. The results indicate that liquid nitrogen is the most efficient refrigerant, achieving the highest cooling rate through both latent and sensible heat. LNG also demonstrated a relatively high cooling rate, 79% of that of liquid nitrogen. Gas-only pre-cooling schemes relying solely on sensible heat exhibited slower cooling rates, with BOG achieved 79.4% of the cooling rate of NG. Mixed refrigerants such as NG + LN and BOG + LNG can achieve comparable, while slightly slower, cooling than the pure liquid refrigerants, outperforming gas-only strategies. A further assessment of the heat transfer coefficient suggests the mixed cooling schemes have almost identical heat transfer coefficient on the inner tank surface to the liquid cooling scheme, over 5% higher than the gas refrigerants. The study also highlighted the uneven temperature distribution within the tank due to the bulkhead’s blockage effect, which can induce significant thermal stress and potentially compromise structural integrity. Mixed schemes exhibit thermal gradients higher than those of gas schemes but lower than those of liquid schemes, while achieving cooling speeds comparable to liquid schemes if the inlet velocity of the refrigerants is properly configured. These findings offer valuable insights for developing safer and more efficient pre-cooling procedures for Type B LNG tanks and similar cryogenic storage tanks.

The biogas production technology has improved over the last years for the aim of reducing the costs of the process, increasing the biogas yields, and minimizing the greenhouse gas emissions. To obtain a stable and efficient biogas production, there are several design considerations and operational parameters to be taken into account. Besides, adapting the process to unanticipated conditions can be achieved by adequate monitoring of various operational parameters. This paper reviews the research that has been conducted over the last years. This review paper summarizes the developments in biogas design and operation, while highlighting the main factors that affect the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion process. The study’s outcomes revealed that the optimum operational values of the main parameters may vary from one biogas plant to another. Additionally, the negative conditions that should be avoided while operating a biogas plant were identified.

A new non-pillar mining technology, gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC), different from the conventional gob-side entry retaining formed by a roadside filling support, is introduced in this study. In the new technology, roof cutting is conducted so that the roof plate forms a short cantilever beam structure within a certain range above the retained entry, thus changing the stress boundary condition of the roof structure. To explore the deformation characteristics of the roof under this special condition, a short cantilever beam mechanical model was established and solved using energy theory and displacement variational methods. Meanwhile, a theoretical and analytical control solution for roof deformation was obtained and verified via field-measured results. Based on the aforementioned calculation, the relationship between the roof deformation and main influence parameters was explored. It was concluded that the rotation of the upper main roof and width of the retained entry had the most significant impacts on roof deformation. Bolt and cable support and temporary support in the entry had a non-obvious influence on the roof deformation and could not prevent the given deformation that was caused by the rotation of the upper main roof. Based on comprehensive theoretical analysis and calculation results, ideas and countermeasures to control short cantilever roof deformation—that is, designing a reasonable height of roof cutting and a controlled width of retaining entry—were proposed and tested. Field monitoring shows that the entry control effects were satisfactory.

The greenhouse’s energy consumption is a major limiting factor for output and development. To address this, it is necessary to adopt green and low-carbon heating technologies to replace traditional fuels. This will not only help conserve energy but will also reduce emissions, thereby improving the thermal environmental conditions for agriculture. This paper aims to research and develop a vertical heat exchange tube array device specifically designed for greenhouses. The focus is on enhancing the passive heat absorption and heat storage efficiency of the device and its influence on the thermal environment of the greenhouse. In order to improve the heat absorption and storage efficiency of the heat exchanger device and its impact on the greenhouse thermal environment, experimental comparative analysis was conducted using air, water, and phase-change materials as working fluids inside the pipes. Through a combination of experiments and simulations, it was verified that the heat exchanger device is capable of actively regulating the greenhouse thermal environment. The results show that heat exchangers of all three types of working fluids can effectively improve the stability of soil temperature and play a “shifting the peak and filling the valley” role in regulating the indoor air temperature while positively regulating the relative humidity of the air. Notably, when the working fluid is a phase-change material, it has the most significant impact on the thermal environment of the greenhouse.
