This is an important sector coupling approach and enables large scale flexibility for a deep decarbonization of energy systems. Two different proposed energy storages – power-to-heat-to-X energy storage (PHXES) and pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) – are investigated in detail in this work towards their potential towards a hybrid deployment. The techno-economic analysis includes thermodynamic flowsheet simulations and unified cost estimations based on the used equipment. It is shown that the main input data set (e.g. working fluid selection, turbomachinery efficiency, pinch temperatures) has a strong influence on storage roundtrip efficiency in the thermodynamic simulations, but also on storage costs. Cost decrease and performance increase can be conflicting development targets, and it is not clear if future energy systems rather require technologies with the highest storage efficiencies or if low cost is an important prerequisite. PHXES and three variants of PTES are implemented into a simplified energy system model of the city of Hamburg that comprises the electric load and heat demand of the district heating system. Two scenarios (fossil benchmark and 80% decarbonization) are used to select the technologies and their capacities that allow the most cost-effective energy supply solution by a linear-programming optimization procedure. Large scale renewable power generation and hybrid energy storage play the major roles in the decarbonization scenario. PHXES with a storage capacity of 69 GWh, hot water storage (3.6 GWh) and a battery system (430 MWh) are part of the cost-optimal solution. A cost sensitivity analysis shows that a total cost reduction of 60–80% is required for PTES to become competitive in this model scenario.

Bioplastics are polymers processed from renewable sources and are biodegradable. This study aims at conducting an environmental impact assessment of the bioprocessing of agricultural wastes into bioplastics compared to petro-plastics using an LCA approach. Bioplastics were produced from potato peels in laboratory. In a biochemical reaction under heating, starch was extracted from peels and glycerin, vinegar and water were added with a range of different ratios, which resulted in producing different samples of bio-based plastics. Nevertheless, the environmental impact of the bioplastics production process was evaluated and compared to petro-plastics. A life cycle analysis of bioplastics produced in laboratory and petro-plastics was conducted. The results are presented in the form of global warming potential, and other environmental impacts including acidification potential, eutrophication potential, freshwater ecotoxicity potential, human toxicity potential, and ozone layer depletion of producing bioplastics are compared to petro-plastics. The results show that the greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, through the different experiments to produce bioplastics, range between 0.354 and 0.623 kg CO2 eq. per kg bioplastic compared to 2.37 kg CO2 eq. per kg polypropylene as a petro-plastic. The results also showed that there are no significant potential effects for the bioplastics produced from potato peels on different environmental impacts in comparison with poly-β-hydroxybutyric acid and polypropylene. Thus, the bioplastics produced from agricultural wastes can be manufactured in industrial scale to reduce the dependence on petroleum-based plastics. This in turn will mitigate GHG emissions and reduce the negative environmental impacts on climate change.

Vidi; F. Hemberger;Abstract Thermal energy storage with phase change materials (PCM) provides high storage capacities in small temperature intervals. For the design of storage systems, the enthalpy curve of the used PCM has to be known with high precision. The T-History method has evolved to a widely used method for the measurement of the enthalpy as a function of temperature of PCM because of its simplicity and the advantage to be able to investigate larger sample volumes than typically used for differential scanning calorimeters. In order to ensure isothermal specimen during the measurement a thermal insulation is often mounted around the sample holder, but this insulation material is not considered in the evaluation model. In this work a new evaluation model for insulated T-History setups is developed by an analytical heat balance. This model is validated by numerical simulations of insulated T-History measurements and experimentally. By the use of the new model for the evaluation of the enthalpy a significant increase of accuracy can be achieved.

One obstacle for AFV market diffusion is the lack of refueling infrastructure which prevents potential users from buying AFVs. Meanwhile infrastructure suppliers await market developments before investing in an extensive infrastructure roll-out. This mutual interaction has been a field of research for several years and a variety of modeling approaches have been applied. This paper aims at reviewing models of combined AFV and refueling infrastructure market diffusion and pointing out research gaps. We retrieve stylized facts which models should account for from empirical studies on natural gas vehicles, user acceptance analyses on AFVs and technical restraints of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Ten interaction models are evaluated with respect to the identified aspects. We find that simulation is the most common approach for an interaction model. Besides, the majority of the examined stylized facts is covered by the models. However, models for FCEVs could be improved by reflecting the transport of fuel to refueling infrastructure while new models on PEVs should include charging duration, frequency and charging station ownership.

Provided that the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel is not in question, a rupture of the connecting pressure vessel between reactor pressure vessel and steam generator vessel is the maximum possible leak cross-section. In this work it is investigated whether the components of the reactor pressure vessel are exposed by the depressurization process to mechanical loads which exceed the load limits. These loads are caused by two different events, the strong momentum change of the fluid and the local pressure differences, respectively. Due to the momentum change the bottom reflector receives the maximum load, whereby only 2% of the compressive strength of the graphite quality used there are reached. However, the load by local pressure differences is between passed volumes and in normal operation, not-passed volumes lead to high load values. A maximum pressure difference of 44.5 bar was calculated at the thermal top shield.

Rider; Scott Ghiocel;With the recent advancements in power electronics for wind turbines (WTs) and increasing penetration of wind energy, wind power plants (WPP) have become necessary contributors of reactive power support for the bulk power system. Balancing reactive power support with individual WT operating requirements in a cost-effective manner is a challenge for WPP designers. In this paper, we present a methodology to optimize the WPP reactive power capability as seen from the point of common coupling (PCC), accounting for steady-state operating capabilities of the WPP equipment. Thus, the proposed methodology determines the configuration of the tap-changing transformers within the WPP that maximizes the amount of reactive power the WPP can either consume or inject to the network, considering uncertain levels of wind power generation and voltage magnitudes at the PCC. The optimized reactive power capability (ORPC) problem is initially formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. Then, a set of efficient linearization techniques are used to obtain a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model that can be solved via off-the-shelf mathematical programming solvers. Results demonstrate that the proposed MILP model is a scalable, flexible and accurate method to maximize the reactive power capability of WPP.

Kosmatopoulos;Abstract A variety of novel, recyclable and reusable, construction materials has already been studied within literature during the past years, aiming at improving the overall energy efficiency ranking of the building envelope. However, several studies show that a delicate control of indoor climating elements can lead to a significant performance improvement by exploiting the building’s savings potential via smart adaptive HVAC regulation to exogenous uncertain disturbances (e.g. weather, occupancy). Building Optimization and Control (BOC) systems can be categorized into two different groups: centralized (requiring high data transmission rates at a central node from every corner of the overall system) and decentralized 1 (assuming an intercommunication among neighboring constituent systems). Moreover, both approaches can be further divided into two subcategories, respectively: model-assisted (usually introducing modeling oversimplifications) and model-free (typically presenting poor stability and very slow convergence rates). This paper presents the application of a novel, decentralized, agent-based , model-free BOC methodology (abbreviated as L4GPCAO) to a modern non-residential building (E.ON. Energy Research Center’s main building), equipped with controllable HVAC systems and renewable energy sources by utilizing the existing Building Management System (BES). The building testbed is located inside the RWTH Aachen University campus in Aachen, Germany. A combined rule criterion composed of the non-renewable energy consumption (NREC) and the thermal comfort index – aligned to international comfort standards – was adopted in all cases presented herein. Besides the limited availability of the specified building testbed, real-life experiments demonstrated operational effectiveness of the proposed approach in BOC applications with complex, emerging dynamics arising from the building’s occupancy and thermal characteristics. L4GPCAO outperformed the control strategy that was designed by the planers and system provider, in a conventional manner, requiring no more than five test days.

SummaryThe German government has adopted a law that requires sewage plants to go beyond the recovery of phosphorus from wastewater and to promote recycling. We argue that there is no physical global short‐ or mid‐term phosphorus scarcity. However, we also argue that there are legitimate reasons for policies such as those of Germany, including: precaution as a way to ensure future generations’ long‐term supply security, promotion of technologies for closed‐loop economics in a promising stage of technology development, and decrease in the current supply risk with a new resource pool.

This is an important sector coupling approach and enables large scale flexibility for a deep decarbonization of energy systems. Two different proposed energy storages – power-to-heat-to-X energy storage (PHXES) and pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) – are investigated in detail in this work towards their potential towards a hybrid deployment. The techno-economic analysis includes thermodynamic flowsheet simulations and unified cost estimations based on the used equipment. It is shown that the main input data set (e.g. working fluid selection, turbomachinery efficiency, pinch temperatures) has a strong influence on storage roundtrip efficiency in the thermodynamic simulations, but also on storage costs. Cost decrease and performance increase can be conflicting development targets, and it is not clear if future energy systems rather require technologies with the highest storage efficiencies or if low cost is an important prerequisite. PHXES and three variants of PTES are implemented into a simplified energy system model of the city of Hamburg that comprises the electric load and heat demand of the district heating system. Two scenarios (fossil benchmark and 80% decarbonization) are used to select the technologies and their capacities that allow the most cost-effective energy supply solution by a linear-programming optimization procedure. Large scale renewable power generation and hybrid energy storage play the major roles in the decarbonization scenario. PHXES with a storage capacity of 69 GWh, hot water storage (3.6 GWh) and a battery system (430 MWh) are part of the cost-optimal solution. A cost sensitivity analysis shows that a total cost reduction of 60–80% is required for PTES to become competitive in this model scenario.

Bioplastics are polymers processed from renewable sources and are biodegradable. This study aims at conducting an environmental impact assessment of the bioprocessing of agricultural wastes into bioplastics compared to petro-plastics using an LCA approach. Bioplastics were produced from potato peels in laboratory. In a biochemical reaction under heating, starch was extracted from peels and glycerin, vinegar and water were added with a range of different ratios, which resulted in producing different samples of bio-based plastics. Nevertheless, the environmental impact of the bioplastics production process was evaluated and compared to petro-plastics. A life cycle analysis of bioplastics produced in laboratory and petro-plastics was conducted. The results are presented in the form of global warming potential, and other environmental impacts including acidification potential, eutrophication potential, freshwater ecotoxicity potential, human toxicity potential, and ozone layer depletion of producing bioplastics are compared to petro-plastics. The results show that the greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, through the different experiments to produce bioplastics, range between 0.354 and 0.623 kg CO2 eq. per kg bioplastic compared to 2.37 kg CO2 eq. per kg polypropylene as a petro-plastic. The results also showed that there are no significant potential effects for the bioplastics produced from potato peels on different environmental impacts in comparison with poly-β-hydroxybutyric acid and polypropylene. Thus, the bioplastics produced from agricultural wastes can be manufactured in industrial scale to reduce the dependence on petroleum-based plastics. This in turn will mitigate GHG emissions and reduce the negative environmental impacts on climate change.

For the design of storage systems, the enthalpy curve of the used PCM has to be known with high precision. The T-History method has evolved to a widely used method for the measurement of the enthalpy as a function of temperature of PCM because of its simplicity and the advantage to be able to investigate larger sample volumes than typically used for differential scanning calorimeters. In order to ensure isothermal specimen during the measurement a thermal insulation is often mounted around the sample holder, but this insulation material is not considered in the evaluation model. In this work a new evaluation model for insulated T-History setups is developed by an analytical heat balance. This model is validated by numerical simulations of insulated T-History measurements and experimentally. By the use of the new model for the evaluation of the enthalpy a significant increase of accuracy can be achieved.

One obstacle for AFV market diffusion is the lack of refueling infrastructure which prevents potential users from buying AFVs. Meanwhile infrastructure suppliers await market developments before investing in an extensive infrastructure roll-out. This mutual interaction has been a field of research for several years and a variety of modeling approaches have been applied. This paper aims at reviewing models of combined AFV and refueling infrastructure market diffusion and pointing out research gaps. We retrieve stylized facts which models should account for from empirical studies on natural gas vehicles, user acceptance analyses on AFVs and technical restraints of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Ten interaction models are evaluated with respect to the identified aspects. We find that simulation is the most common approach for an interaction model. Besides, the majority of the examined stylized facts is covered by the models. However, models for FCEVs could be improved by reflecting the transport of fuel to refueling infrastructure while new models on PEVs should include charging duration, frequency and charging station ownership.

Provided that the integrity of the reactor pressure vessel is not in question, a rupture of the connecting pressure vessel between reactor pressure vessel and steam generator vessel is the maximum possible leak cross-section. In this work it is investigated whether the components of the reactor pressure vessel are exposed by the depressurization process to mechanical loads which exceed the load limits. These loads are caused by two different events, the strong momentum change of the fluid and the local pressure differences, respectively. Due to the momentum change the bottom reflector receives the maximum load, whereby only 2% of the compressive strength of the graphite quality used there are reached. However, the load by local pressure differences is between passed volumes and in normal operation, not-passed volumes lead to high load values. A maximum pressure difference of 44.5 bar was calculated at the thermal top shield.

Balancing reactive power support with individual WT operating requirements in a cost-effective manner is a challenge for WPP designers. In this paper, we present a methodology to optimize the WPP reactive power capability as seen from the point of common coupling (PCC), accounting for steady-state operating capabilities of the WPP equipment. Thus, the proposed methodology determines the configuration of the tap-changing transformers within the WPP that maximizes the amount of reactive power the WPP can either consume or inject to the network, considering uncertain levels of wind power generation and voltage magnitudes at the PCC. The optimized reactive power capability (ORPC) problem is initially formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. Then, a set of efficient linearization techniques are used to obtain a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model that can be solved via off-the-shelf mathematical programming solvers. Results demonstrate that the proposed MILP model is a scalable, flexible and accurate method to maximize the reactive power capability of WPP.

Kosmatopoulos;Abstract A variety of novel, recyclable and reusable, construction materials has already been studied within literature during the past years, aiming at improving the overall energy efficiency ranking of the building envelope. However, several studies show that a delicate control of indoor climating elements can lead to a significant performance improvement by exploiting the building’s savings potential via smart adaptive HVAC regulation to exogenous uncertain disturbances (e.g. weather, occupancy). Building Optimization and Control (BOC) systems can be categorized into two different groups: centralized (requiring high data transmission rates at a central node from every corner of the overall system) and decentralized 1 (assuming an intercommunication among neighboring constituent systems). Moreover, both approaches can be further divided into two subcategories, respectively: model-assisted (usually introducing modeling oversimplifications) and model-free (typically presenting poor stability and very slow convergence rates). This paper presents the application of a novel, decentralized, agent-based , model-free BOC methodology (abbreviated as L4GPCAO) to a modern non-residential building (E.ON. Energy Research Center’s main building), equipped with controllable HVAC systems and renewable energy sources by utilizing the existing Building Management System (BES). The building testbed is located inside the RWTH Aachen University campus in Aachen, Germany. A combined rule criterion composed of the non-renewable energy consumption (NREC) and the thermal comfort index – aligned to international comfort standards – was adopted in all cases presented herein. Besides the limited availability of the specified building testbed, real-life experiments demonstrated operational effectiveness of the proposed approach in BOC applications with complex, emerging dynamics arising from the building’s occupancy and thermal characteristics. L4GPCAO outperformed the control strategy that was designed by the planers and system provider, in a conventional manner, requiring no more than five test days.

SummaryThe German government has adopted a law that requires sewage plants to go beyond the recovery of phosphorus from wastewater and to promote recycling. We argue that there is no physical global short‐ or mid‐term phosphorus scarcity. However, we also argue that there are legitimate reasons for policies such as those of Germany, including: precaution as a way to ensure future generations’ long‐term supply security, promotion of technologies for closed‐loop economics in a promising stage of technology development, and decrease in the current supply risk with a new resource pool.
