Research data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2013Embargo end date: 15 Mar 2013 SpainPublisher:Digital.CSIC Authors: Beguería, Santiago; Vicente Serrano, Sergio M.;The Global SPEI database, SPEIbase, offers long-time, robust information on the drought conditions at the global scale, with a 0.5 degrees spatial resolution and a monthly time resolution. It has a multi-scale character, providing SPEI time-scales between 1 and 48 months. The Standardized Precipitatin-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) expresses, as a standardized variate (mean zero and unit variance), the deviations of the current climatic balance (precipitation minus evapotranspiration potential) with respect to the long-term balance. The reference period for the calculation, in the SPEIbase, corresponds to the whole study period. Being a standardized variate means that the SPEI condition can be compared across space and time. Calculation of the evapotranspiration potential in SPEIbase is based on the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith method. Data type: float; units: z-values (standard deviations). No land pixels are assigned a value of 1.0x10^30. In some rare cases it was not possible to achieve a good fit to the log-logistic distribution, resulting in a NAN (not a number) value in the database. Dimensions of the dataset: lon = 720; lat = 360; time = 1356. Resolution of the dataset: lon = 0.5º; lat = 0.5º; time = 1 month. Created in R using the SPEI package (http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/SPEI). Global gridded dataset of the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at time scales between 1 and 48 months. Spatial resolution of 0.5º lat/lon. Temporal coverage between January 1901 and December 2011. This is an update of a previous version of SPEIbase v2 (http://hdl.handle.net/10261/48169). What’s new in version 2.2: 1) Data has been extended to the period 1901-2011 (it was 1901-2009 in v 2.0). 2) The FAO grass reference evapotranspiration from the CRU TS3.2 dataset has been used as PET input for the SPEI (http://badc.nerc.ac.uk/browse/badc/cru/data/cru_ts_3.20). Precipitation is also obtained from the same CRU TS3.2 dataset. 3) Unbiased probability weighted moments (ub-pwm) method has been used for fitting the log-Logistic distribution, instead of the sub-optimal plotting-position pwm method used in version 1.0. For more details on the SPEI visit http://sac.csic.es/spei. The Global 0.5° gridded SPEI dataset is made available under the Open Database License. Any rights in individual contents of the database are licensed under the Database Contents License. Users of the dataset are free to share, create and adapt under the conditions of attribution and share-alike. Use of the newest version is recommended. Older versions are still available to allow replicability.

Supplementary Table 1 Trunk diameters measured in 2017 before starting the experiment of the central 16 vines of each treatment. The analysis of variance was performed at P < 0.05. ns = not significant; * = significant differences. Supplementary Table 2 Summary of all the vine measurements carried out in the experiment, which vines were used, when they were taken and what were the objectives of each measurement. Supplementary Table 3 Parameters used to calculate respiration and the reference from which they were extracted and adapted. For fruit respiration Q10 = 2 was assumed. In Escalona et al., 2012, shoot respiration was presented in nmol O2/gDW. We assumed a respiratory quotient = 1. Supplementary Table 4 Environmental conditions in and out of the whole canopy gas exchange chamber. Note that on 29th May temperature and VPD in the chamber for CFlate were high values since a pipe obturation occurred for one hour. Supplementary Table 5 Maximum net carbon exchange per leaf area (maxNCEch) and net carbon exchange (NCEch), measured through whole canopy gas exchange chamber, and net carbon exchange modelled (NCEm). Supplementary Table 6 Inputs required to estimate net carbon exchange model in the experimental zone for the days in which open-top whole canopy gas exchange chambers were operating. Note that not all the measurements included a whole day data since data were adjusted for the time the vine was in the whole canopy gas exchange chamber. Supplementary Figure 1 Scheme of the experimental design on an NDVI map performed in year 2016 with an airborne (all the methodology was described in Bellvert et al., 2020). The different numbers are he replicates of each treatment. The distance between vines of the same replicate of different treatments is represented in red. Supplementary Figure 2 Open-top whole canopy gas exchange chamber used to validate the net carbon exchange model. Supplementary Figure 3 Linear regression between modelled net carbon exchange (NCEm) and measured using an open-top whole-canopy gas exchange chamber (NCEch) (R2 = 0.95, y=1.03x- 1.98, RMSE = 5.8; NSE = 0.95). Black circles indicate measurements conducted before applying the treatments and includes vines from all three treatments in 2019. Measurements after the forcing date correspond to Control (blue), CFearly (green) and CFlate (orange). The grey dotted line means 1:1 relation. Elevated temperatures during berry ripening have been shown to affect grape quality. The crop forcing technique (summer pruning that ‘force’ the vine to start a new cycle) has been shown to improve berry quality by delaying the harvest date. However, yield is typically reduced on forced vines, which is attributed to vine low carbon availability soon after forcing and likely incomplete inflorescence formation. The present study aims to estimate the carbon balance of forced vines and evaluate vine responses to changes in carbon patterns due to forcing. Three treatments were studied on Tempranillo cultivar: non-forced vines (Control), vines forced shortly after fruit set (CFearly) and vines forced one month later at the beginning of bunch closure (CFlate). Whole canopy net carbon exchange was modelled and validated using two whole canopy gas exchange chambers. In addition, non-structural carbohydrate reserves at budburst, forcing date and harvest, were analysed. Yield, yield components and vegetative growth were also evaluated. Harvest date was delayed by one and two months in the CFearly and CFlate, respectively, which increased must acidity. However, yield was lower in the forced treatments compared to the Control (49% lower for CFearly and 82% for CFlate). In the second year, at the time when CFearly and CFlate dormant buds were unlocked (forced budburst), forced vines had significantly lower non-structural carbohydrates than Control vines at budburst. Although the time elapsed from budburst to reach maximum net carbon exchange was longer for the Control treatment (80 days) than for the forced treatments (about 40 days), average daily net carbon exchange until harvest was comparable between Control (60.9 g CO2/vine/day) and CFearly (55.9 g CO2/vine/day), but not for CFlate (38.7 g CO2/vine/day). In addition, the time elapsed from budburst to harvest was shorter in forced treatments (about 124 days) than for the Control (172 days). As a result, the cumulative net carbon exchange until harvest was reduced by 35% (CFearly) and 55% (CFlate) in the forced treatments. However, no differences in carbon reserves at harvest were observed between treatments partly helped by the higher source:sink ratio observed in forced than Control vines. Peer reviewed

[EN] Hylobius abietis (L.) is the most economically important pest of coniferous seedlings in clear-cut areas in Europe. Adult weevils cause extensive damage by feeding on the bark of newly planted seedlings on clear felled coniferous stands. During the last 20 years, several studies have tried to find an effective method for trapping H. abietis in north Europe, but there is no information for the warmer countries of Southern Europe. In this study, alpha-pinene and turpentine in combination with ethanol as attractants, and pine bark or pine branches as trap substrate were used to trap alive H. abietis in NW Spain. The combination of alpha-pinene and ethanol obtained nearly 7-fold greater captures than the control. However, there were no significant differences between alpha-pinene and turpentine. The catches were also significantly affected by the substrate used in the traps. Fresh pine bark impregnated with turpentine and ethanol achieved nearly 11-fold greater captures than branches as substrate. The use of pine bark plus turpentine (40 mL) and ethanol (20 mL) appeared as an effective and cheap alternative to capture H. abietis in Spain. Advances in the phenology of organisms are often attributed to climate change, but alternatively, may reflect a publication bias towards advances and may be caused by environmental factors unrelated to climate change. Both factors are investigated using the breeding dates of 25 long-term studied populations of Ficedula flycatchers across Europe. Trends in spring temperature varied markedly between study sites, and across populations the advancement of laying date was stronger in areas where the spring temperatures increased more, giving support to the theory that climate change causally affects breeding date advancement.

ABSTRACTUnicellular eukaryotic predators have a crucial role in the functioning of the ocean ecosystem by recycling nutrients and energy that are channeled to upper trophic levels. Traditionally, these evolutionary-diverse organisms have been combined into a single functional group (Heterotrophic flagellates), overlooking their organismal differences. Here we investigate four evolutionary related species belonging to one cosmopolitan family of uncultured marine picoeukaryotic predators: MAST-4 (species A, B, C, and E). Co-occurrence and distribution analyses in the global surface ocean indicated contrasting patterns in MAST-4A & C, suggesting adaptation to different temperatures. We then investigated whether these spatial distribution patterns were mirrored by MAST-4 genomic content using Single-Cell Genomics. Analyses of 69 single-cells recovered 66-83% of the MAST-4A/B/C/E genomes, which displayed substantial inter-species divergence. MAST-4 genomes were similar in terms of broad gene functional categories, but they differed in enzymes of ecological relevance, such as glycoside hydrolases (GHs), which are part of the food degradation machinery in MAST-4. Interestingly, MAST-4 species featuring a similar GH composition co-excluded each other (A & C) in the surface global ocean, while species with a different set of GHs appeared to be able to co-exist (species B & C) suggesting further niche diversification associated to prey digestion. We propose that differential niche adaptation to temperature and prey type has promoted adaptive evolutionary diversification in MAST-4. Altogether, we show that minute ocean predators from the same family may have different biogeography and genomic content, which need to be accounted to better comprehend marine food webs.

16 pages, 7 figures, 1 table The model of Paillard and Parrenin (Earth Planet Sci Lett 227(3-4):263-271, 2004) has been recently optimized for the last eight glacial cycles, leading to two different relaxation models with model-data correlations between 0.8 and 0.9 (García-Olivares and Herrero (Clim Dyn 1-25, 2012b)). These two models are here used to predict the effect of an anthropogenic CO2 pulse on the evolution of atmospheric CO2, global ice volume and Antarctic ice cover during the next 300 kyr. The initial atmospheric CO2 condition is obtained after a critical data analysis that sets 1300 Gt as the most realistic carbon Ultimate Recoverable Resources (URR), with the help of a global compartmental model to determine the carbon transfer function to the atmosphere. The next 20 kyr will have an abnormally high greenhouse effect which, according to the CO2 values, will lengthen the present interglacial by some 25 to 33 kyr. This is because the perturbation of the current interglacial will lead to a delay in the future advance of the ice sheet on the Antarctic shelf, causing that the relative maximum of boreal insolation found 65 kyr after present (AP) will not affect the developing glaciation. Instead, it will be the following insolation peak, about 110 kyr AP, which will find an appropriate climatic state to trigger the next deglaciation. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht This study has been carried out in the framework of project TIC-MOC (CTM2011-28867), funded by the 2008-2011 Spanish R+D Plan.
