    El artículo trata sobre el diseño de una estrategia de control en una plataforma que produce hidrógeno a partir de la energía del viento y de las olas de mar en alta mar localizada en el Océano Atlántico. Se considera la generación de la energía mediante energías renovables como la fuente energética que alimenta a un conjunto de electrolizadores, teniendo en cuenta la energía disponible y optimizando la operación de la planta. Se presentan los resultados de las simulaciones, mostrando la correcta operación de la plataforma bajo el control propuesto.

    Esta tesis doctoral nace de la convicción de que, para frenar y minimizar, que no evitar (desgraciadamente), las consecuencias del cambio climático hay que profundizar en la mente humana y desentrañar cómo los factores culturales y sociales condicionan y determinan la forma en la que las personas, individual y colectivamente, construyen, comparten y comunican sus explicaciones y valoraciones sobre este fenómeno como base representacional para reaccionar –o no- ante él. En este sentido, nos proponemos entender en qué medida, usando como marco teórico la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales, podemos explicar las similitudes y diferencias entre lo que piensa la gente, desde lo individual a lo colectivo, y el corpus de conocimiento científico disponible sobre los fenómenos climáticos y su alteración antrópica, sobre sus causas, procesos, consecuencias y soluciones. This doctoral thesis is born of the conviction that, in order to slow down and minimize, rather than (unfortunately) avoid, the consequences of climate change, it is necessary to go deeper into the human mind and unravel how cultural and social factors condition and determine the way in which people, individually and collectively, construct, share and communicate their explanations and assessments of this phenomenon. In this sense, we propose to understand to what extent, using as a theoretical framework the Theory of Social Representations, we can explain the similarities and differences between what people think, from the individual to the collective, and the body of scientific knowledge available on climate phenomena and their anthropic alteration, on their causes, processes, consequences and solutions.     Son diferentes los servicios que brindan los ecosistemas, desde servicios fundamentales como la provisión de agua y regulación del clima a servicios recreativos y culturales, varia el tipo de servicio en un ecosistema y en otro. Varios estudios muestran de la importancia de estos ecosistemas en el bienestar humano y su grado de afectación por las actividades antrópicas y por fenómenos naturales. Se está acelerando el calentamiento global, extinguiendo especies, sobreexplotando los recursos naturales, todo esto afecta el buen funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. La Jalca es un lugar que ha sido escenario de estudios botánicos, ecológicos y económicos, por su importancia en la conservación del medio ambiente y provisión de servicios ecosistémicos. En este estudio se propuso como objetivo identificar, describir y analizar los servicios ecosistémicos prioritarios de Jalca de Cajamarca y su estado de conservación. El escenario del estudio esta entre los 3000 y 4200 m s. n. m., tiene clima frio, en promedio 10 °C y alta precipitación alrededor de 1000 mm. Se usó la diferente literatura disponible para cumplir dicho objetivo. Como resultado se obtuvo que los servicios de alta prioridad son: la provisión de agua, la regulación del clima (captura de carbono por las turberas), valores espirituales y plantas medicinales. La Jalca provisiona agua a ciudades de Cajamarca y Lambayeque para sus diferentes usos. Se contabilizaron 300 lagunas presentes en todas las cuencas. La Jalca almacena carbono en sus turberas que pueden llegar hasta 7 metros de profundidad, se estima que en promedio hay 7103.2 tn de carbono orgánico por hectárea. Además, es una fuente de conocimiento tradicional y espiritual que se ha conservado en el tiempo, se cree en los apus, en el viento, la lluvia y en algunos animales que tienen significado mítico. Es un banco de medicinas que provee con 437 plantas para diferentes afecciones. Són diferents els serveis que brinden els ecosistemes, des de serveis fonamentals com la provisió d'aigua i regulació del clima a serveis recreatius i culturals, varia el tipus de servei en un ecosistema i l'altre. Diversos estudis mostren la importància d'aquests ecosistemes en el benestar humà i el grau d'afectació que tenen per les activitats antròpiques i per fenòmens naturals. S'està accelerant l'escalfament global, extingint espècies, sobreexplotant els recursos naturals, tot això afecta el bon funcionament dels ecosistemes. La Jalca és un lloc que ha estat escenari destudis botànics, ecològics i econòmics, per la seva importància en la conservació del medi ambient i provisió de serveis ecosistèmics. Ecosystem services range from fundamental services such as water supply and climate regulation to recreational and cultural services, and the type of service varies from one ecosystem to another. Several studies show the importance of these ecosystems in human well-being and their degree of affectation by anthropogenic activities and natural phenomena. Global warming is accelerating, extinguishing species, overexploiting natural resources, all of this affects the proper functioning of ecosystems. The Jalca is a place that has been the scene of botanical, ecological and economic studies, due to its importance in the conservation of the environment and provision of ecosystem services. The objective of this study was to identify, describe and analyze the priority ecosystem services of Jalca de Cajamarca and its conservation status. The study site is located between 3,000 and 4,200 m a.s.l., has a cold climate, with an average temperature of 10 °C and high precipitation of about 1,000 mm. The different available literature was used to meet this objective. As a result, the high priority services are: water supply, climate regulation (carbon sequestration by the peatlands), spiritual values and medicinal plants. La Jalca provides water to cities in Cajamarca and Lambayeque for different uses. There are 300 lagoons in all the basins. La Jalca stores carbon in its peat bogs that can reach up to 7 meters deep; it is estimated that there is an average of 7,103.2 tons of organic carbon per hectare. In addition, it is a source of traditional and spiritual knowledge that has been preserved over time, it is believed in the apus, wind, rain and some animals that have mythical significance. It is a medicine bank that provides 437 plants for different conditions.

    Ponencia presentada en: IX Congreso de la Asociación Española de Climatología celebrado en Almería entre el 28 y el 30 de octubre de 2014. [ES]Se analiza después la evolución de la radiación solar global en Girona desde principios de los 90 a la actualidad, enmarcando los resultados en el incremento de radiación solar observado en España durante este periodo. Se ha encontrado que en los últimos 20 años (1994-2013), la radiación solar global media anual ha aumentado a un ritmo de 3.6 Wm-2 por década; buena parte de este aumento se debe a lo que ocurre en verano, con una tendencia de 9.1 Wm-2 por década. Estos valores son consistentes con lo que se ha observado en el entorno regional (Península Ibérica y sur de Francia). [EN]The evolution of the global solar radiation in Girona is then analysed from the early 1990s up to today, in the framework of the observed increase of solar radiation in Spain during this period. It is found that in the last 20 years (1994-2013), the annual average global solar radiation has increased at a rate of 3.6 Wm-2 per decade; much of this increase is due to what happens in summer, with a trend of 9.1 Wm-2 per decade. These values are consistent with what has been observed in the regional environment (Iberian Peninsula and southern France).     En los últimos años, las energías renovables han pasado a jugar un papel fundamental en el abastecimiento energético mundial, debido al aumento de la demanda de energía y a la creciente problemática ambiental. Sin embargo, las energías renovables no están exentas de problemas medioambientales, y factores como la ocupación del territorio y el impacto visual hacen que su aceptación social disminuya. En el caso de la energía eólica, la disposición de los aerogeneradores queda condicionada por la intermitencia en la dirección e intensidad del viento, lo que complica la reducción del impacto visual de los parques eólicos y, por tanto, su aceptación social. Debido a la complejidad de los escenarios en los que se sitúan estas instalaciones, existe una gran diversidad de metodologías para optimizar su integración en el paisaje, pero no hay una metodología generalizada que considere que la población debe jugar un papel importante en su desarrollo. Para conocer y valorar el impacto visual que genera el parque eólico "La Plata", se han aplicado tres metodologías: una basada en la valoración cualitativa de los escenarios de población, otra en el uso de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) y la última a través de cuestionarios, comprobando así la equidad en los resultados de las tres metodologías. Aplicadas las tres metodologías y comparando los resultados, todas ellas coinciden en la valoración del impacto visual negativo en el paisaje del parque eólico ?La Plata?, si bien la metodología que se apoya en el uso de cuestionarios incide directamente en la percepción de la población de este impacto, y discierne sus principales problemas. Para determinar la situación del arbolado propuesto se ha utilizado un SIG seleccionando las áreas prioritarias y así evaluar la reducción del impacto visual producido.

Generando estudios sobre esta relación, este Trabajo de Fin de Máster se enfoca en casos de contaminación por micro plásticos en costas de la Comunidad Valenciana como ejemplos tangibles de la crisis medioambiental global y su ilación con la elaboración y utilización del producto gráfico. Así pues, se reflexiona sobre una serie de referentes empíricos y artísticos que asientan una base documental para perfilar las bases ético-ecológicas de un modelo de estampación múltiple sostenible, es decir, libre de polímeros sintéticos con características biomiméticas. [EN] This theoretical research is articulated in an analysis based on the convergence between different fields of scientific knowledge and contemporary Graphic Arts as the point of intersection of environmental plastic pollution and marine environments. Generating studies on this relationship, this Thesis focuses on cases of contamination by microplastics on the coasts of the Valencian Community as tangible examples of the global environmental crisis and its connection with the development and use of graphic products. Thus, it reflects on a series of empirical and artistic references that establish a documentary basis in order to outline the ethical-ecological bases of a sustainable multiple stamping model, that is, free of synthetic polymers with biomimetic features.

    [ES]Hacia comienzos de 2021 aparecieron dos mensajes contradictorios en sendos medios de Baleares, afirmando uno de ellos que el archipiélago lideraba el calentamiento climático en España mientras que el otro anunciaba que Baleares era una de las regiones donde menos había subido la temperatura desde 1961. Como ambos medios decían basarse en trabajos publicados por instituciones científicas, esta contradicción no podía sino generar desconfianza en el público receptor de estos mensajes. El problema parece residir en que el cálculo de las tendencias en las series climáticas (temperaturas en este caso) puede arrojar resultados muy diferentes según el periodo utilizado, el número de series y si éstas se han sometido previamente a un proceso de homogeneización o no. En este trabajo revisamos los distintos valores de las tendencias de la temperatura en Baleares publicadas en el pasado y las comparamos con nuevos cálculos actualizados hasta 2020, tanto de series observadas y promedios de retícula como de reanálisis. Los diferentes resultados obtenidos suscitan la cuestión de cómo comunicar estas tendencias y sus incertidumbres al público sin menoscabar su credibilidad en el actual contexto de preocupación por el cambio climático. [EN]Two contradictory messages appeared around the beginning of 2021 in two Balearic media. One of them claimed this archipelago was leading the climate warming in Spain, while the other advertised that the Balearic Islands were one of the regions where the temperature had risen the least since 1961. As both media claimed to be based on works published by scientific institutions, this contradiction can only generate distrust in the public receiving these messages. The problem seems to be that the calculation of the trends of climatic series (temperatures in this case) can yield very different results depending on the period used, the number of series and whether or not they have previously undergone a homogenization process. In this work we review the different values of the temperature trends in the Balearic Islands published in the past and compare them with new calculations updated until 2020, both from observed series and grid averages and from reanalysis. The different results obtained raise the question of how to communicate these trends and their uncertainties to the public without undermining their credibility in the current context of concern about climate change.     This article presents a part of UPC´s study about the sustainability analysis of 8 drainage pipes (four alternatives made concrete with 400 mm, 800 mm, 1200 mm and 2000 mm of diameter and four alternatives made plastic with the same diameters). MIVE’s methodology –Integrated Value Model Sustainability Evaluation- (Aguado, Manga and Ormazábal, 2006) was used in this study and a comparative analysis of sustainability index of each concrete alternative versus each plastic alternative was performed. In total 14 indicators which divided into 4 main areas: functional, economic, social and environmental were considered. This article focuses on two indicators that are evaluated in relation to structural design: the additional mechanical capacity and raw material consumption during execution. These two indicators are closely related especially when it comes to flexible pipes (Polypropylene, Polyethylene, Polyvinyl chloride). The structural capacity of flexible pipes is mainly given by the type of trench, and the type of land used for filling and compacting it. That is, any surface loading is resisted by the system of ground-structure interaction. The structural calculation was carried out following the German guideline ATV-127 (Guidelines for the mechanical calculation of pipes and sewage pipes). This guideline is used to study both flexible and rigid pipelines and it is implemented together with other guides in the Análisis Mecánico de Tuberías Enterradas program (AMTE). Additional mechanical capacity (capacity increase over specified capacity) of each pipe alternatives has been calculated based on several parameters: height of fill, fill type and degree of compaction of the fill. The conclusions reached once calculations have been performed with all the aforementioned constraints are the following: 1) The types of filling and compaction rate have an influence on the additional mechanical capacity of the pipe. This influence is enhanced when using plastic pipe because the land contributes 85% of the total resistance to ground-tube set on average.     El artículo trata sobre el diseño de una estrategia de control en una plataforma que produce hidrógeno a partir de la energía del viento y de las olas de mar en alta mar localizada en el Océano Atlántico. Se considera la generación de la energía mediante energías renovables como la fuente energética que alimenta a un conjunto de electrolizadores, teniendo en cuenta la energía disponible y optimizando la operación de la planta. Se presentan los resultados de las simulaciones, mostrando la correcta operación de la plataforma bajo el control propuesto.

    Esta tesis doctoral nace de la convicción de que, para frenar y minimizar, que no evitar (desgraciadamente), las consecuencias del cambio climático hay que profundizar en la mente humana y desentrañar cómo los factores culturales y sociales condicionan y determinan la forma en la que las personas, individual y colectivamente, construyen, comparten y comunican sus explicaciones y valoraciones sobre este fenómeno como base representacional para reaccionar –o no- ante él. En este sentido, nos proponemos entender en qué medida, usando como marco teórico la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales, podemos explicar las similitudes y diferencias entre lo que piensa la gente, desde lo individual a lo colectivo, y el corpus de conocimiento científico disponible sobre los fenómenos climáticos y su alteración antrópica, sobre sus causas, procesos, consecuencias y soluciones. This doctoral thesis is born of the conviction that, in order to slow down and minimize, rather than (unfortunately) avoid, the consequences of climate change, it is necessary to go deeper into the human mind and unravel how cultural and social factors condition and determine the way in which people, individually and collectively, construct, share and communicate their explanations and assessments of this phenomenon. In this sense, we propose to understand to what extent, using as a theoretical framework the Theory of Social Representations, we can explain the similarities and differences between what people think, from the individual to the collective, and the body of scientific knowledge available on climate phenomena and their anthropic alteration, on their causes, processes, consequences and solutions.     Son diferentes los servicios que brindan los ecosistemas, desde servicios fundamentales como la provisión de agua y regulación del clima a servicios recreativos y culturales, varia el tipo de servicio en un ecosistema y en otro. Varios estudios muestran de la importancia de estos ecosistemas en el bienestar humano y su grado de afectación por las actividades antrópicas y por fenómenos naturales. Se está acelerando el calentamiento global, extinguiendo especies, sobreexplotando los recursos naturales, todo esto afecta el buen funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. La Jalca es un lugar que ha sido escenario de estudios botánicos, ecológicos y económicos, por su importancia en la conservación del medio ambiente y provisión de servicios ecosistémicos. En este estudio se propuso como objetivo identificar, describir y analizar los servicios ecosistémicos prioritarios de Jalca de Cajamarca y su estado de conservación. El escenario del estudio esta entre los 3000 y 4200 m s. n. m., tiene clima frio, en promedio 10 °C y alta precipitación alrededor de 1000 mm. Se usó la diferente literatura disponible para cumplir dicho objetivo. Como resultado se obtuvo que los servicios de alta prioridad son: la provisión de agua, la regulación del clima (captura de carbono por las turberas), valores espirituales y plantas medicinales. La Jalca provisiona agua a ciudades de Cajamarca y Lambayeque para sus diferentes usos. Se contabilizaron 300 lagunas presentes en todas las cuencas. La Jalca almacena carbono en sus turberas que pueden llegar hasta 7 metros de profundidad, se estima que en promedio hay 7103.2 tn de carbono orgánico por hectárea. Además, es una fuente de conocimiento tradicional y espiritual que se ha conservado en el tiempo, se cree en los apus, en el viento, la lluvia y en algunos animales que tienen significado mítico. Es un banco de medicinas que provee con 437 plantas para diferentes afecciones. Són diferents els serveis que brinden els ecosistemes, des de serveis fonamentals com la provisió d'aigua i regulació del clima a serveis recreatius i culturals, varia el tipus de servei en un ecosistema i l'altre. Diversos estudis mostren la importància d'aquests ecosistemes en el benestar humà i el grau d'afectació que tenen per les activitats antròpiques i per fenòmens naturals. S'està accelerant l'escalfament global, extingint espècies, sobreexplotant els recursos naturals, tot això afecta el bon funcionament dels ecosistemes. La Jalca és un lloc que ha estat escenari destudis botànics, ecològics i econòmics, per la seva importància en la conservació del medi ambient i provisió de serveis ecosistèmics. Ecosystem services range from fundamental services such as water supply and climate regulation to recreational and cultural services, and the type of service varies from one ecosystem to another. Several studies show the importance of these ecosystems in human well-being and their degree of affectation by anthropogenic activities and natural phenomena. Global warming is accelerating, extinguishing species, overexploiting natural resources, all of this affects the proper functioning of ecosystems. The Jalca is a place that has been the scene of botanical, ecological and economic studies, due to its importance in the conservation of the environment and provision of ecosystem services. The objective of this study was to identify, describe and analyze the priority ecosystem services of Jalca de Cajamarca and its conservation status. The study site is located between 3,000 and 4,200 m a.s.l., has a cold climate, with an average temperature of 10 °C and high precipitation of about 1,000 mm. The different available literature was used to meet this objective. As a result, the high priority services are: water supply, climate regulation (carbon sequestration by the peatlands), spiritual values and medicinal plants. La Jalca provides water to cities in Cajamarca and Lambayeque for different uses. There are 300 lagoons in all the basins. La Jalca stores carbon in its peat bogs that can reach up to 7 meters deep; it is estimated that there is an average of 7,103.2 tons of organic carbon per hectare. In addition, it is a source of traditional and spiritual knowledge that has been preserved over time, it is believed in the apus, wind, rain and some animals that have mythical significance. It is a medicine bank that provides 437 plants for different conditions.

[ES]Se analiza después la evolución de la radiación solar global en Girona desde principios de los 90 a la actualidad, enmarcando los resultados en el incremento de radiación solar observado en España durante este periodo. Se ha encontrado que en los últimos 20 años (1994-2013), la radiación solar global media anual ha aumentado a un ritmo de 3.6 Wm-2 por década; buena parte de este aumento se debe a lo que ocurre en verano, con una tendencia de 9.1 Wm-2 por década. Estos valores son consistentes con lo que se ha observado en el entorno regional (Península Ibérica y sur de Francia). [EN]The evolution of the global solar radiation in Girona is then analysed from the early 1990s up to today, in the framework of the observed increase of solar radiation in Spain during this period. It is found that in the last 20 years (1994-2013), the annual average global solar radiation has increased at a rate of 3.6 Wm-2 per decade; much of this increase is due to what happens in summer, with a trend of 9.1 Wm-2 per decade. These values are consistent with what has been observed in the regional environment (Iberian Peninsula and southern France).     En los últimos años, las energías renovables han pasado a jugar un papel fundamental en el abastecimiento energético mundial, debido al aumento de la demanda de energía y a la creciente problemática ambiental. Sin embargo, las energías renovables no están exentas de problemas medioambientales, y factores como la ocupación del territorio y el impacto visual hacen que su aceptación social disminuya. En el caso de la energía eólica, la disposición de los aerogeneradores queda condicionada por la intermitencia en la dirección e intensidad del viento, lo que complica la reducción del impacto visual de los parques eólicos y, por tanto, su aceptación social. Debido a la complejidad de los escenarios en los que se sitúan estas instalaciones, existe una gran diversidad de metodologías para optimizar su integración en el paisaje, pero no hay una metodología generalizada que considere que la población debe jugar un papel importante en su desarrollo. Para conocer y valorar el impacto visual que genera el parque eólico "La Plata", se han aplicado tres metodologías: una basada en la valoración cualitativa de los escenarios de población, otra en el uso de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) y la última a través de cuestionarios, comprobando así la equidad en los resultados de las tres metodologías. Aplicadas las tres metodologías y comparando los resultados, todas ellas coinciden en la valoración del impacto visual negativo en el paisaje del parque eólico ?La Plata?, si bien la metodología que se apoya en el uso de cuestionarios incide directamente en la percepción de la población de este impacto, y discierne sus principales problemas. Para determinar la situación del arbolado propuesto se ha utilizado un SIG seleccionando las áreas prioritarias y así evaluar la reducción del impacto visual producido.

Generando estudios sobre esta relación, este Trabajo de Fin de Máster se enfoca en casos de contaminación por micro plásticos en costas de la Comunidad Valenciana como ejemplos tangibles de la crisis medioambiental global y su ilación con la elaboración y utilización del producto gráfico. Así pues, se reflexiona sobre una serie de referentes empíricos y artísticos que asientan una base documental para perfilar las bases ético-ecológicas de un modelo de estampación múltiple sostenible, es decir, libre de polímeros sintéticos con características biomiméticas. [EN] This theoretical research is articulated in an analysis based on the convergence between different fields of scientific knowledge and contemporary Graphic Arts as the point of intersection of environmental plastic pollution and marine environments. Generating studies on this relationship, this Thesis focuses on cases of contamination by microplastics on the coasts of the Valencian Community as tangible examples of the global environmental crisis and its connection with the development and use of graphic products. Thus, it reflects on a series of empirical and artistic references that establish a documentary basis in order to outline the ethical-ecological bases of a sustainable multiple stamping model, that is, free of synthetic polymers with biomimetic features.

    [ES]Hacia comienzos de 2021 aparecieron dos mensajes contradictorios en sendos medios de Baleares, afirmando uno de ellos que el archipiélago lideraba el calentamiento climático en España mientras que el otro anunciaba que Baleares era una de las regiones donde menos había subido la temperatura desde 1961. Como ambos medios decían basarse en trabajos publicados por instituciones científicas, esta contradicción no podía sino generar desconfianza en el público receptor de estos mensajes. El problema parece residir en que el cálculo de las tendencias en las series climáticas (temperaturas en este caso) puede arrojar resultados muy diferentes según el periodo utilizado, el número de series y si éstas se han sometido previamente a un proceso de homogeneización o no. En este trabajo revisamos los distintos valores de las tendencias de la temperatura en Baleares publicadas en el pasado y las comparamos con nuevos cálculos actualizados hasta 2020, tanto de series observadas y promedios de retícula como de reanálisis. Los diferentes resultados obtenidos suscitan la cuestión de cómo comunicar estas tendencias y sus incertidumbres al público sin menoscabar su credibilidad en el actual contexto de preocupación por el cambio climático. [EN]Two contradictory messages appeared around the beginning of 2021 in two Balearic media. One of them claimed this archipelago was leading the climate warming in Spain, while the other advertised that the Balearic Islands were one of the regions where the temperature had risen the least since 1961. As both media claimed to be based on works published by scientific institutions, this contradiction can only generate distrust in the public receiving these messages. The problem seems to be that the calculation of the trends of climatic series (temperatures in this case) can yield very different results depending on the period used, the number of series and whether or not they have previously undergone a homogenization process. In this work we review the different values of the temperature trends in the Balearic Islands published in the past and compare them with new calculations updated until 2020, both from observed series and grid averages and from reanalysis. The different results obtained raise the question of how to communicate these trends and their uncertainties to the public without undermining their credibility in the current context of concern about climate change.     This article presents a part of UPC´s study about the sustainability analysis of 8 drainage pipes (four alternatives made concrete with 400 mm, 800 mm, 1200 mm and 2000 mm of diameter and four alternatives made plastic with the same diameters). MIVE’s methodology –Integrated Value Model Sustainability Evaluation- (Aguado, Manga and Ormazábal, 2006) was used in this study and a comparative analysis of sustainability index of each concrete alternative versus each plastic alternative was performed. In total 14 indicators which divided into 4 main areas: functional, economic, social and environmental were considered. This article focuses on two indicators that are evaluated in relation to structural design: the additional mechanical capacity and raw material consumption during execution. These two indicators are closely related especially when it comes to flexible pipes (Polypropylene, Polyethylene, Polyvinyl chloride). The structural capacity of flexible pipes is mainly given by the type of trench, and the type of land used for filling and compacting it. That is, any surface loading is resisted by the system of ground-structure interaction. The structural calculation was carried out following the German guideline ATV-127 (Guidelines for the mechanical calculation of pipes and sewage pipes). This guideline is used to study both flexible and rigid pipelines and it is implemented together with other guides in the Análisis Mecánico de Tuberías Enterradas program (AMTE). Additional mechanical capacity (capacity increase over specified capacity) of each pipe alternatives has been calculated based on several parameters: height of fill, fill type and degree of compaction of the fill. The conclusions reached once calculations have been performed with all the aforementioned constraints are the following: 1) The types of filling and compaction rate have an influence on the additional mechanical capacity of the pipe. This influence is enhanced when using plastic pipe because the land contributes 85% of the total resistance to ground-tube set on average. By contrast, in concrete pipes (rigid pipes) the land provides only a 15 % of the resistance. 2) The influence of filling and compaction rate increases with increasing the diameter of pipe.
