Double-nanotextured black diamond films with different geometries were fabricated by double-step femtosecond laser treatments at different split ratios of accumulated laser fluence. A "2D-like" pseudo-periodic nanostructure was obtained for the first time when the split ratio was slightly unbalanced in favour of the first step of the treatment, as inferred by scanning electron microscopy. Raman analysis showed that a residual biaxial stress, composed by a superposition of a tensile and a compressive component, is always present after the laser writing process, and that the two components tend to balance each other in the 2D pseudo-periodic case. Spectrophotometric measurements in the 200 e2000 nm wavelength range returned outstanding solar absorptance values for all the fabricated films (reaching the unprecedented value of 99.1% in the "2D-like" structure), launching double-nanotextured black diamond as a possible alternative to black silicon as absorbing layer for high-efficiency solar cells.

A 3D model is developed to describe an anode-supported planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), by Ansys/Fluent evaluating reactions including methane steam reforming (MSR)/water-gas shift (WGSR) reactions in thick anode layer and H2-O2/CO-O2 electrochemical reactions in anode active layer, coupled with heat, mass species, momentum, and ion/electron charges transport processes in SOFC. The predicted results indicate that electron/ion exchange appears in the very thin region in active layers (0.018 mm in anode and 0.01 mm in cathode), based on three phase boundary, operating temperature and concentration of reactants (mainly H2). Active polarization happening in active layers dominates over concentration and ohmic losses. High gradient of current density exists near interface between electrode and solid conductor due to the block by gas channel. It is also found the reaction rates of MSR and WGSR along main flow direction and cell thickness direction decrease due to low concentration of fuel (CH4) caused by mass consumption. With increasing operating temperature from 978 K to 1088 K, the current density and the reaction rate of MSR are increased by 10.8% and 5.4%, respectively. While ion current density is 52.9% higher than in standard case, and H2 is consumed by 5.1% more when ion conductivity is doubled. CO-O2 has been considered in charge transfer reaction in anode active layer and it is found that the current density and species distributions are not sensitive, but WGSR reaction will be forced backwards to supply more CO for CO-O2 electrochemical reaction.

This new method is called “GC–MS method” or “GCM”. The HHV which is calculated by this method is compared to the one given by the researchers (generally obtained by bomb calorimeter) on the one hand and those of Dulong’s and Vondracek’s formulae on the other hand. The results show that GCM and Vondracek are generally in a good agreement with the experimental values than those obtained with Dulong’s formula.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are particularly interesting because they can handle the reforming of hydrocarbon fuels directly within the cell. This is possible due to their high operating temperature. The purpose of this study is to develop an anode-supported SOFC model, to enhance the understanding of the internal reforming and effects on the transport processes. In this study, a CFD approach, based on the finite element method, was implemented for the analysis to unravel the interaction between internal reforming, momentum, heat and mass transport. COMSOL Multiphysics is used to analyze the effects of different global kinetic models available for the steam reforming reaction. The three different reaction rates applied in this study were developed and correlated through experimental studies found in the literature. An equilibrium equation is implemented for the reaction rate for the water-gas shift reaction. The partial pressures and the related reaction order of the pressure are found to affect the reaction rate.

Magnesium hydride has been proposed as innovative anode material for Li ion cells due to its large theoretical capacity and high-energy efficiency compared to other conversion Materials. In this work, we report a combined experimental-theoretical study about the origin of voltage hysteresis in, the Conversion reaction of MgH2 in lithium cells. Experimentally, the extent of the thermodynamic voltage hysteresis in the first galvanostatic discharge charge cycle has been determined by the GITT technique and decoupled from the kinetic overpotentials. Theoretically, the origin of the thermodynamic voltage hysteresis has been evaluated and studied by means density functional theory calculations within the supercell approach. Different elementary reactions have been modeled upon reduction and oxidation on the surfaces of the active phases (i.e., MgH2, LiH, and Mg), and the associated theoretical voltages have been predicted. Experimental and theoretical results have been compared and discussed to draw a,comprehensive description of the elementary surface reactions of the MgH2 conversion in lithium cells.

AbstractThe possible effects on cognitive processes of external electric fields, such as those generated by power line pillars and household appliances are of increasing public concern. They are difficult to study experimentally, and the relatively scarce and contradictory evidence make it difficult to clearly assess these effects. In this study, we investigate how, why and to what extent external perturbations of the intrinsic neuronal activity, such as those that can be caused by generation, transmission and use of electrical energy can affect neuronal activity during cognitive processes. For this purpose, we used a morphologically and biophysically realistic three‐dimensional model of CA1 pyramidal neurons. The simulation findings suggest that an electric field oscillating at power lines frequency, and environmentally measured strength, can significantly alter both the average firing rate and temporal spike distribution properties of a hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neuron. This effect strongly depends on the specific and instantaneous relative spatial location of the neuron with respect to the field, and on the synaptic input properties. The model makes experimentally testable predictions on the possible functional consequences for normal hippocampal functions such as object recognition and spatial navigation. The results suggest that, although EF effects on cognitive processes may be difficult to occur in everyday life, their functional consequences deserve some consideration, especially when they constitute a systematic presence in living environments.

Moench) is raising considerable interest as a source of either fermentable free sugars or lignocellulosic feedstock with the potential to produce fuel, food, feed and a variety of other products. Sweet sorghum is a C4 plant with many potential advantages, including high water, nitrogen and radiation use efficiency, broad agro-ecological adaptation as well as a rich genetic diversity for useful traits. For developing countries sweet sorghum provides opportunities for the simultaneous production of food and bioenergy (e.g. bio-ethanol), thereby contributing to improved food security as well as increased access to affordable and renewable energy sources. In temperate regions (e.g. in Europe) sweet sorghum is seen as promising crop for the production of raw material for 2nd generation bio-ethanol. The project SWEETFUEL (Sweet Sorghum: An alternative energy crop) is supported by the European Commission in the 7th Framework Programme to exploit the advantages of sweet sorghum as potential energy crop for bio-ethanol production. Ferreira Airaud;Nest site selection is a critical behaviour, particularly in species with no parental care, as it can greatly impact offspring survival. Marine turtles depend on sandy beaches to nest, where they select from a range of microhabitats that may differently affect hatchling survival and phenotype. Here we describe the degree of nest site selection at one of the largest green turtle rookeries globally, in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, and how this impacts offspring. In 2013 and 2014 we recorded the spatial distribution of 1559 nests, and monitored 657 females during oviposition, to assess population and individual preferences on nesting site. Overall, females tended to nest close to the vegetation, at a preferred elevation of 4.8–5.0 m, which was above the highest spring tide (4.7 m), enhancing clutch survival. Individuals displayed high repeatability in nesting microhabitat type (open sand, forest border and forest), distance along the beach, distance to the vegetation and elevation, which may result from this behaviour having a genetic basis or from fine-scale nest site philopatry. Hatchlings from cooler nests were larger, potentially dispersing faster and more able to evade predators, while smaller hatchlings, from warmer nests, retained more energetic reserves (residual yolk), which may also be advantageous for initial dispersal, particularly if food is scarce. Thus, individual preferences in nest site selection led to trade-offs in offspring phenotype, but overall, most nesting females selected sites that increased offspring survival, suggesting that nest site selection is an adaptive trait that has been under selection. As under future climate change scenarios females nesting in upper shaded areas should have higher fitness, individual consistency in nesting microhabitat provides opportunity for natural selection to occur.

B L; Thiam, Massamba; Yidana, J.;The morphological responses of seedlings of eight African provenances of Vitellaria paradoxa (Shea tree or Karite) to imposed draught stress were compared under nursery experimental conditions. The potted seedlings were subjected to three different watering regimes (87 days after sowing): no water stress (100% of the field capacity, C), moderate water stress (75% of C) and severe water stress (50% of C). Before the application of the stress, we observed genotypical differences in the morphological variables at the scale of leaves and of above-ground parts. The six-month water stress affected aerial growth: all provenances responded to drought by down-regulating growth (in height and in diameter), leaf number and area. Katawki provenance of Uganda performed relatively poorly, possibly of it being a nilotica subspecies, contrary to the others (paradoxa subspecies). There was a lack of correlation between climate of seeds origin, seed characteristics, seeds germination and survival rate of seedlings. The study confirmed the importance of leaf area in the vigor of the initial growth in this species. Thus, Tamale and Karaba provenances performed better than other West African provenances due to their larger leaf area, which was found to be a determining factor of relative growth in height at the seedling stage.

This paper provides a synthesis and comparison of methodologies and results obtained in several studies devoted to the impact of climate change on hydropower. By putting into perspective various case studies, we provide a broader context and improved understanding of climate changes on energy production. We also underline the strengths and weaknesses of the approaches used as far as technical, physical and economical aspects are concerned. Although the catchments under investigation are located close to each other in geographic terms (Swiss and Italian Alps), they represent a wide variety of situations which may be affected by differing evolutions for instance in terms of annual runoff. In this study, we also differentiate between run-of-river, storage and pumping-storage power plants. By integrating and comparing various analyses carried out in the framework of the EU-FP7 ACQWA project, this paper discusses the complexity as well as current and future issues of hydropower management in the entire Alpine region.

Double-nanotextured black diamond films with different geometries were fabricated by double-step femtosecond laser treatments at different split ratios of accumulated laser fluence. A "2D-like" pseudo-periodic nanostructure was obtained for the first time when the split ratio was slightly unbalanced in favour of the first step of the treatment, as inferred by scanning electron microscopy. Raman analysis showed that a residual biaxial stress, composed by a superposition of a tensile and a compressive component, is always present after the laser writing process, and that the two components tend to balance each other in the 2D pseudo-periodic case. Spectrophotometric measurements in the 200 e2000 nm wavelength range returned outstanding solar absorptance values for all the fabricated films (reaching the unprecedented value of 99.1% in the "2D-like" structure), launching double-nanotextured black diamond as a possible alternative to black silicon as absorbing layer for high-efficiency solar cells.

A 3D model is developed to describe an anode-supported planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), by Ansys/Fluent evaluating reactions including methane steam reforming (MSR)/water-gas shift (WGSR) reactions in thick anode layer and H2-O2/CO-O2 electrochemical reactions in anode active layer, coupled with heat, mass species, momentum, and ion/electron charges transport processes in SOFC. The predicted results indicate that electron/ion exchange appears in the very thin region in active layers (0.018 mm in anode and 0.01 mm in cathode), based on three phase boundary, operating temperature and concentration of reactants (mainly H2). Active polarization happening in active layers dominates over concentration and ohmic losses. High gradient of current density exists near interface between electrode and solid conductor due to the block by gas channel. It is also found the reaction rates of MSR and WGSR along main flow direction and cell thickness direction decrease due to low concentration of fuel (CH4) caused by mass consumption. With increasing operating temperature from 978 K to 1088 K, the current density and the reaction rate of MSR are increased by 10.8% and 5.4%, respectively. While ion current density is 52.9% higher than in standard case, and H2 is consumed by 5.1% more when ion conductivity is doubled. CO-O2 has been considered in charge transfer reaction in anode active layer and it is found that the current density and species distributions are not sensitive, but WGSR reaction will be forced backwards to supply more CO for CO-O2 electrochemical reaction.

This new method is called “GC–MS method” or “GCM”. The HHV which is calculated by this method is compared to the one given by the researchers (generally obtained by bomb calorimeter) on the one hand and those of Dulong’s and Vondracek’s formulae on the other hand. The results show that GCM and Vondracek are generally in a good agreement with the experimental values than those obtained with Dulong’s formula.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are particularly interesting because they can handle the reforming of hydrocarbon fuels directly within the cell. This is possible due to their high operating temperature. The purpose of this study is to develop an anode-supported SOFC model, to enhance the understanding of the internal reforming and effects on the transport processes. In this study, a CFD approach, based on the finite element method, was implemented for the analysis to unravel the interaction between internal reforming, momentum, heat and mass transport. COMSOL Multiphysics is used to analyze the effects of different global kinetic models available for the steam reforming reaction. The three different reaction rates applied in this study were developed and correlated through experimental studies found in the literature. An equilibrium equation is implemented for the reaction rate for the water-gas shift reaction. The partial pressures and the related reaction order of the pressure are found to affect the reaction rate.

Magnesium hydride has been proposed as innovative anode material for Li ion cells due to its large theoretical capacity and high-energy efficiency compared to other conversion Materials. In this work, we report a combined experimental-theoretical study about the origin of voltage hysteresis in, the Conversion reaction of MgH2 in lithium cells. Experimentally, the extent of the thermodynamic voltage hysteresis in the first galvanostatic discharge charge cycle has been determined by the GITT technique and decoupled from the kinetic overpotentials. Theoretically, the origin of the thermodynamic voltage hysteresis has been evaluated and studied by means density functional theory calculations within the supercell approach. Different elementary reactions have been modeled upon reduction and oxidation on the surfaces of the active phases (i.e., MgH2, LiH, and Mg), and the associated theoretical voltages have been predicted. Experimental and theoretical results have been compared and discussed to draw a,comprehensive description of the elementary surface reactions of the MgH2 conversion in lithium cells.

AbstractThe possible effects on cognitive processes of external electric fields, such as those generated by power line pillars and household appliances are of increasing public concern. They are difficult to study experimentally, and the relatively scarce and contradictory evidence make it difficult to clearly assess these effects. In this study, we investigate how, why and to what extent external perturbations of the intrinsic neuronal activity, such as those that can be caused by generation, transmission and use of electrical energy can affect neuronal activity during cognitive processes. For this purpose, we used a morphologically and biophysically realistic three‐dimensional model of CA1 pyramidal neurons. The simulation findings suggest that an electric field oscillating at power lines frequency, and environmentally measured strength, can significantly alter both the average firing rate and temporal spike distribution properties of a hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neuron. This effect strongly depends on the specific and instantaneous relative spatial location of the neuron with respect to the field, and on the synaptic input properties. The model makes experimentally testable predictions on the possible functional consequences for normal hippocampal functions such as object recognition and spatial navigation. The results suggest that, although EF effects on cognitive processes may be difficult to occur in everyday life, their functional consequences deserve some consideration, especially when they constitute a systematic presence in living environments.

Sweet sorghum is a C4 plant with many potential advantages, including high water, nitrogen and radiation use efficiency, broad agro-ecological adaptation as well as a rich genetic diversity for useful traits. For developing countries sweet sorghum provides opportunities for the simultaneous production of food and bioenergy (e.g. bio-ethanol), thereby contributing to improved food security as well as increased access to affordable and renewable energy sources. In temperate regions (e.g. in Europe) sweet sorghum is seen as promising crop for the production of raw material for 2nd generation bio-ethanol. Ferreira Airaud;Nest site selection is a critical behaviour, particularly in species with no parental care, as it can greatly impact offspring survival. Marine turtles depend on sandy beaches to nest, where they select from a range of microhabitats that may differently affect hatchling survival and phenotype. Here we describe the degree of nest site selection at one of the largest green turtle rookeries globally, in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, and how this impacts offspring. In 2013 and 2014 we recorded the spatial distribution of 1559 nests, and monitored 657 females during oviposition, to assess population and individual preferences on nesting site. Overall, females tended to nest close to the vegetation, at a preferred elevation of 4.8–5.0 m, which was above the highest spring tide (4.7 m), enhancing clutch survival. Individuals displayed high repeatability in nesting microhabitat type (open sand, forest border and forest), distance along the beach, distance to the vegetation and elevation, which may result from this behaviour having a genetic basis or from fine-scale nest site philopatry. Hatchlings from cooler nests were larger, potentially dispersing faster and more able to evade predators, while smaller hatchlings, from warmer nests, retained more energetic reserves (residual yolk), which may also be advantageous for initial dispersal, particularly if food is scarce. Thus, individual preferences in nest site selection led to trade-offs in offspring phenotype, but overall, most nesting females selected sites that increased offspring survival, suggesting that nest site selection is an adaptive trait that has been under selection. As under future climate change scenarios females nesting in upper shaded areas should have higher fitness, individual consistency in nesting microhabitat provides opportunity for natural selection to occur.

B L; Thiam, Massamba; Yidana, J.;The morphological responses of seedlings of eight African provenances of Vitellaria paradoxa (Shea tree or Karite) to imposed draught stress were compared under nursery experimental conditions. The potted seedlings were subjected to three different watering regimes (87 days after sowing): no water stress (100% of the field capacity, C), moderate water stress (75% of C) and severe water stress (50% of C). Before the application of the stress, we observed genotypical differences in the morphological variables at the scale of leaves and of above-ground parts. The six-month water stress affected aerial growth: all provenances responded to drought by down-regulating growth (in height and in diameter), leaf number and area. Katawki provenance of Uganda performed relatively poorly, possibly of it being a nilotica subspecies, contrary to the others (paradoxa subspecies). There was a lack of correlation between climate of seeds origin, seed characteristics, seeds germination and survival rate of seedlings. The study confirmed the importance of leaf area in the vigor of the initial growth in this species. Thus, Tamale and Karaba provenances performed better than other West African provenances due to their larger leaf area, which was found to be a determining factor of relative growth in height at the seedling stage.

This paper provides a synthesis and comparison of methodologies and results obtained in several studies devoted to the impact of climate change on hydropower. By putting into perspective various case studies, we provide a broader context and improved understanding of climate changes on energy production. We also underline the strengths and weaknesses of the approaches used as far as technical, physical and economical aspects are concerned. Although the catchments under investigation are located close to each other in geographic terms (Swiss and Italian Alps), they represent a wide variety of situations which may be affected by differing evolutions for instance in terms of annual runoff. In this study, we also differentiate between run-of-river, storage and pumping-storage power plants. By integrating and comparing various analyses carried out in the framework of the EU-FP7 ACQWA project, this paper discusses the complexity as well as current and future issues of hydropower management in the entire Alpine region.
