The hot summer of 2018 posed many challenges with regard to water shortages and yield losses, especially for agricultural production. These agricultural impacts might further pose consequent threats for the environment. In this paper, we deduce the impact of droughts on agricultural land management and on water quality owing to nitrate pollution. Using national statistics, we calculate a Germany-wide soil surface nitrogen budget for 2018 and deduce the additional N surplus owing to the dry weather conditions. Using a model farm approach, we compare fertilization practices and legal restrictions for arable and pig breeding farms. The results show that, nationwide, at least 464 kt of nitrogen were not transferred to plant biomass in 2018, which equals an additional average nitrogen surplus of 30 kg/ha. The surplus would even have amounted to 43 kg/ha, if farmers had continued their fertilization practice from preceding years, but German farmers applied 161 kt less nitrogen in 2018 than in the year before, presumably as a result of the new implications of the Nitrates Directive, and, especially on grassland, owing to the drought. As nitrogen surplus is regarded as an “agri-drinking water indicator” (ADWI), an increase of the surplus entails water pollution with nitrates. The examples of the model farms show that fertilization regimes with high shares of organic fertilizers produce higher nitrogen surpluses. Owing to the elevated concentrations on residual nitrogen in soils, the fertilization needs of crops in spring 2019 were less pronounced than in preceding years. Thus, the quantity of the continuously produced manure in livestock farms puts additional pressure on existing storage capacities. This may particularly be the case in the hot-spot regions of animal breeding in the north-west of Germany, where manure production, biogas plants, and manure imports are accumulating. The paper concludes that water shortages under climate change not only impact agricultural production and yields, but also place further challenges and threats to nutrient management and the environment. The paper discusses preventive and emergency management options for agriculture to support farmers in extremely dry and hot conditions.

Thin (approximately 10 nm) oxide buffer layers grown over lead-halide perovskite device stacks are critical for protecting the perovskite against mechanical and environmental damage. However, the limited perovskite stability restricts the processing methods and temperatures (<=110 C) that can be used to deposit the oxide overlayers, with the latter limiting the electronic properties of the oxides achievable. In this work, we demonstrate an alternative to existing methods that can grow pinhole-free TiOx (x = 2.00+/-0.05) films with the requisite thickness in <1 min without vacuum. This technique is atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (AP-CVD). The rapid but soft deposition enables growth temperatures of >=180 ��C to be used to coat the perovskite. This is >=70 ��C higher than achievable by current methods and results in more conductive TiOx films, boosting solar cell efficiencies by >2%. Likewise, when AP-CVD SnOx (x ~ 2) is grown on perovskites, there is also minimal damage to the perovskite beneath. The SnOx layer is pinhole-free and conformal, which reduces shunting in devices, and increases steady-state efficiencies from 16.5% (no SnOx) to 19.4% (60 nm SnOx), with fill factors reaching 84%. However, the main reason for the increasing uptake of this type of solution is their many benefits for the local inhabitants, including recreational value. Previous studies on recreational value focus on studies of existing nature sites that are often much larger than what is considered as new NBS for flood adaptation studies in urban areas. We thus prioritized studies with smaller areas and nature types suitable for urban flood adaptation and divided them into four common nature types for urban flood adaptation: sustainable urban drainage systems, city parks, nature areas and rivers. We identified 23 primary valuation studies, including both stated and revealed preference studies, and derived two value transfer functions based on meta-regression analysis on existing areas. We investigated trends between values and variables and found that for the purpose of planning of new NBS the size of NBS and population density were determining factors of recreational value. For existing NBS the maximum travelling distance may be included as well. We find that existing state-of-the-art studies overestimate the recreational with more than a factor of 4 for NBS sizes below 5 ha. Our results are valid in a European context for nature-based solutions below 250 ha and can be applied across different NBS types and sizes.

Abstract Thermal properties of the different building envelopes, such as thermal transmittance in steady state, heat storage capacity and dynamic thermal responses, must be taken into account during the design phase of buildings. The evaluation and measurement of these parameters in multilayered samples are difficult because of the irregular morphology of the used materials and the difficulty in providing the well-controlled environment needed for the measurements. A new equipment has been designed to measure the thermal response and heat capacity of composite walls of different materials simulating real building envelopes. The equipment presented in this paper was used to test the improvement in the thermal response of a building envelope due to the incorporation of PCM. This study is focused on wood structural panels attached to a gypsum board, which is either impregnated or not with PCM. The four edges of the composite sample are properly insulated to ensure one-dimensional heat flow. The two faces of the sample are exposed to controlled environments heated and cooled by copper coils with thermo stated water supplied by water baths. The measured surface heat fluxes at both surfaces of the sample and temperature distribution in the sample provide accurate assessment to thermal mass and dynamic response of the composite wall, while the steady state measurements provide an accurate estimate of its effective thermal transmittance.

Drawing on evidence collected during a research-led change initiative that encouraged people to reduce energy use in the home by lowering indoor temperature to 18°C, we deploy the heuristic device of “indoor microclimate as artifact” to show how the manifestation of this new artifact initiated significant changes in everyday practices that revolve around heating. We observe that these changes may also spill over into the public sphere – from home to workplace. By making the microclimate a tangible and visible thing, we describe how people appropriate and appreciate this new object of consumption, what it says about different bodies in diverse and bounded spaces, and what the artifact as a commodity reveals about broader systems of heating and energy provision, and associated actors. Due to the increasing spread of central heating and the growing importance of complex technological devices to monitor and control indoor temperature, heating is no longer a practice in and of itself for many urban dwellers in Europe. However, when people appropriate the indoor microclimate, new heating-related practices emerge that can lead to energy sufficiency. We thus argue that by deliberately “materializing” domestic indoor microclimate as part of a change initiative, more sustainable forms of energy use can be made to matter.

Kovtunenko;This paper is devoted to study the electrochemical behavior of Pt catalyst in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell at various operating conditions and at different electric potential difference (also known as voltage) cycling applied in accelerated stress tests. The degradation of platinum is considered with respect to the Pt ion dissolution and the Pt oxide coverage of catalyst described by a one-dimensional model. In the model, degradation rate increases with temperature and decreasing particle diameter of Pt nano-particles. The theoretical study of the underlying diffusion system with the nonlinear reactions is presented by analytical methods and gives explicit solutions through a first integral of the ODE system. Numerical tests are obtained using a second order implicit-explicit scheme. The computer simulation shows that the lifetime of the catalyst depends on the voltage profile and the upper potential level. By this Pt mass loss is more significant at the membrane surface than at the gas diffusion layer.

Morgan;Using liquid metals confined in capillary porous structures (CPSs) as a plasma-facing component (PFC) could prolong the lifetime of the divertor in the high heat flux area. However, the high atomic number of tin (Sn) limits its acceptable fraction in the main plasma. Therefore, a crucial step in developing this concept is to test it in a tokamak environment, particularly in the diverted plasma region, e.g. ASDEX Upgrade (AUG). In this paper, the design of liquid tin module (LTM) is explained, and the testing in the high heat flux device GLADIS before its use in AUG is presented. The LTM was additively manufactured using selective laser melting, consisting of a 1.5mm porous layer tungsten (W) directly attached to a solid W bulk. The LTM has a plasma-facing area of 16×40mm2 and was filled with 1.54g of Sn. In GLADIS, the module was exposed to power loads between 2 and 8MWm−2 for 1 up to 10s, first unfilled and later filled with Sn. The surface temperature was monitored with infrared imaging and pyrometry. The thermal response was used to compare with simulations in Ansys Mechanical, enabling a determination of the module’s effective thermal properties. Sn droplets could be observed on the infrared camera, until a surface temperature of about a 1000°C was reached. The enhanced wetting of tin on the plasma-facing surface, which was observed by a visible camera, suggests that there is a conditioning of the surface, possibly due to the removal of impurities and oxides. Subsequent examinations of the adjacent tile revealed minor Sn leakages emanating from the module’s edge. Furthermore, the module showed no indication of mechanical failure. Therefore, these results indicated that the LTM qualifies for the heat fluxes expected in ASDEX Upgrade.

The agro-livestock sector produces about one third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Since more energy is needed to meet the growing demand for food and the industrial revolution in agriculture, renewable energy sources could improve access to energy resources and energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and reduce GHG emissions. Hydrogen production is a promising energy technology, but its deployment in the global energy system is lagging. Here, we analyzed the theoretical and practical application of green hydrogen generated by electrolysis of water, powered by renewable energy sources, in the agro-livestock sector. Green hydrogen is at an early stage of development in most applications, and barriers to its large-scale deployment remain. Appropriate policies and financial incentives could make it a profitable technology for the future.

For refrigeration and power systems, the minichannel heat exchangers are becoming attractive for transcritical CO2 Rankine cycle and supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle, due to their highly compact construction, high heat transfer coefficient, high pressure capability and lower fluid inventory. This paper employs three-dimensional numerical models to investigate the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of supercritical CO2 in minichannels. The models consider real gas thermophysical properties and buoyancy effect and investigate the effect of cross-section geometry on the thermohydraulic characteristics. Six minichannel cross-section geometries with the same hydraulic diameter of 1.22 mm are considered. The geometries include circle, semicircle, square, equilateral triangle, rectangle (aspect ratio = 2) and ellipse (aspect ratio = 2). The inlet temperature, outlet pressure and wall heat flux are 35 °C/75 bar/100 kW/m2 and 35 °C/150 bar/300 kW/m2 for heating conditions and 120 °C/75 bar/-100 kW/m2 and 120 °C/150 bar/-300 kW/m2 for cooling conditions. Comparisons of local Nusselt number and friction factor with those employed empirical correlations are made and useful information and guidelines are provided for the design of compact heat exchangers for supercritical CO2 power system applications.

Activated sludge from municipal wastewater treatment processes can be used directly for the production of biodegradable polyesters from the family of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). However, municipal activated sludge typically cannot accumulate PHAs to very high levels and often low yields of polymer produced on substrate are observed. In the present work, it was found that the presence of calcium promotes selective growth and enrichment of the PHA-storing biomass fraction and significantly improved both PHA contents and yields. Calcium addition resulted in PHA contents of 0.60 ± 0.03 gPHA/gVSS and average PHA yields on substrate of 0.49 ± 0.03 gCODPHA/gCODHAc compared to 0.35 ± 0.01 gPHA/gVSS and 0.19 ± 0.01 gCODPHA/gCODHAc without calcium addition. After 48 h, three times more PHA was produced compared to control experiments without calcium addition. Higher PHA content and selective biomass production is proposed to be a consequence of calcium dependent increased levels of passive acetate uptake. Such more efficient substrate uptake could be related to a formation of calcium acetate complexes. Findings lead to bioprocess methods to stimulate a short-term selective growth of PHA-storing microorganisms and this enables improvements to the techno-economic feasibility for municipal waste activated sludge to become a generic resource for industrial scale PHA production.

The hot summer of 2018 posed many challenges with regard to water shortages and yield losses, especially for agricultural production. These agricultural impacts might further pose consequent threats for the environment. In this paper, we deduce the impact of droughts on agricultural land management and on water quality owing to nitrate pollution. Using national statistics, we calculate a Germany-wide soil surface nitrogen budget for 2018 and deduce the additional N surplus owing to the dry weather conditions. Using a model farm approach, we compare fertilization practices and legal restrictions for arable and pig breeding farms. The results show that, nationwide, at least 464 kt of nitrogen were not transferred to plant biomass in 2018, which equals an additional average nitrogen surplus of 30 kg/ha. The surplus would even have amounted to 43 kg/ha, if farmers had continued their fertilization practice from preceding years, but German farmers applied 161 kt less nitrogen in 2018 than in the year before, presumably as a result of the new implications of the Nitrates Directive, and, especially on grassland, owing to the drought. As nitrogen surplus is regarded as an “agri-drinking water indicator” (ADWI), an increase of the surplus entails water pollution with nitrates. The examples of the model farms show that fertilization regimes with high shares of organic fertilizers produce higher nitrogen surpluses. Owing to the elevated concentrations on residual nitrogen in soils, the fertilization needs of crops in spring 2019 were less pronounced than in preceding years. Thus, the quantity of the continuously produced manure in livestock farms puts additional pressure on existing storage capacities. This may particularly be the case in the hot-spot regions of animal breeding in the north-west of Germany, where manure production, biogas plants, and manure imports are accumulating. The paper concludes that water shortages under climate change not only impact agricultural production and yields, but also place further challenges and threats to nutrient management and the environment. The paper discusses preventive and emergency management options for agriculture to support farmers in extremely dry and hot conditions.

Thin (approximately 10 nm) oxide buffer layers grown over lead-halide perovskite device stacks are critical for protecting the perovskite against mechanical and environmental damage. However, the limited perovskite stability restricts the processing methods and temperatures (<=110 C) that can be used to deposit the oxide overlayers, with the latter limiting the electronic properties of the oxides achievable. In this work, we demonstrate an alternative to existing methods that can grow pinhole-free TiOx (x = 2.00+/-0.05) films with the requisite thickness in <1 min without vacuum. This technique is atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (AP-CVD). The rapid but soft deposition enables growth temperatures of >=180 ��C to be used to coat the perovskite. This is >=70 ��C higher than achievable by current methods and results in more conductive TiOx films, boosting solar cell efficiencies by >2%. Likewise, when AP-CVD SnOx (x ~ 2) is grown on perovskites, there is also minimal damage to the perovskite beneath. The SnOx layer is pinhole-free and conformal, which reduces shunting in devices, and increases steady-state efficiencies from 16.5% (no SnOx) to 19.4% (60 nm SnOx), with fill factors reaching 84%. However, the main reason for the increasing uptake of this type of solution is their many benefits for the local inhabitants, including recreational value. Previous studies on recreational value focus on studies of existing nature sites that are often much larger than what is considered as new NBS for flood adaptation studies in urban areas. We thus prioritized studies with smaller areas and nature types suitable for urban flood adaptation and divided them into four common nature types for urban flood adaptation: sustainable urban drainage systems, city parks, nature areas and rivers. We identified 23 primary valuation studies, including both stated and revealed preference studies, and derived two value transfer functions based on meta-regression analysis on existing areas. We investigated trends between values and variables and found that for the purpose of planning of new NBS the size of NBS and population density were determining factors of recreational value. For existing NBS the maximum travelling distance may be included as well. We find that existing state-of-the-art studies overestimate the recreational with more than a factor of 4 for NBS sizes below 5 ha. Our results are valid in a European context for nature-based solutions below 250 ha and can be applied across different NBS types and sizes.

Abstract Thermal properties of the different building envelopes, such as thermal transmittance in steady state, heat storage capacity and dynamic thermal responses, must be taken into account during the design phase of buildings. The evaluation and measurement of these parameters in multilayered samples are difficult because of the irregular morphology of the used materials and the difficulty in providing the well-controlled environment needed for the measurements. A new equipment has been designed to measure the thermal response and heat capacity of composite walls of different materials simulating real building envelopes. The equipment presented in this paper was used to test the improvement in the thermal response of a building envelope due to the incorporation of PCM. This study is focused on wood structural panels attached to a gypsum board, which is either impregnated or not with PCM. The four edges of the composite sample are properly insulated to ensure one-dimensional heat flow. The two faces of the sample are exposed to controlled environments heated and cooled by copper coils with thermo stated water supplied by water baths. The measured surface heat fluxes at both surfaces of the sample and temperature distribution in the sample provide accurate assessment to thermal mass and dynamic response of the composite wall, while the steady state measurements provide an accurate estimate of its effective thermal transmittance.

Drawing on evidence collected during a research-led change initiative that encouraged people to reduce energy use in the home by lowering indoor temperature to 18°C, we deploy the heuristic device of “indoor microclimate as artifact” to show how the manifestation of this new artifact initiated significant changes in everyday practices that revolve around heating. We observe that these changes may also spill over into the public sphere – from home to workplace. By making the microclimate a tangible and visible thing, we describe how people appropriate and appreciate this new object of consumption, what it says about different bodies in diverse and bounded spaces, and what the artifact as a commodity reveals about broader systems of heating and energy provision, and associated actors. Due to the increasing spread of central heating and the growing importance of complex technological devices to monitor and control indoor temperature, heating is no longer a practice in and of itself for many urban dwellers in Europe. However, when people appropriate the indoor microclimate, new heating-related practices emerge that can lead to energy sufficiency. We thus argue that by deliberately “materializing” domestic indoor microclimate as part of a change initiative, more sustainable forms of energy use can be made to matter.

Kovtunenko;This paper is devoted to study the electrochemical behavior of Pt catalyst in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell at various operating conditions and at different electric potential difference (also known as voltage) cycling applied in accelerated stress tests. The degradation of platinum is considered with respect to the Pt ion dissolution and the Pt oxide coverage of catalyst described by a one-dimensional model. In the model, degradation rate increases with temperature and decreasing particle diameter of Pt nano-particles. The theoretical study of the underlying diffusion system with the nonlinear reactions is presented by analytical methods and gives explicit solutions through a first integral of the ODE system. Numerical tests are obtained using a second order implicit-explicit scheme. The computer simulation shows that the lifetime of the catalyst depends on the voltage profile and the upper potential level. By this Pt mass loss is more significant at the membrane surface than at the gas diffusion layer.

Morgan;Using liquid metals confined in capillary porous structures (CPSs) as a plasma-facing component (PFC) could prolong the lifetime of the divertor in the high heat flux area. However, the high atomic number of tin (Sn) limits its acceptable fraction in the main plasma. Therefore, a crucial step in developing this concept is to test it in a tokamak environment, particularly in the diverted plasma region, e.g. ASDEX Upgrade (AUG). In this paper, the design of liquid tin module (LTM) is explained, and the testing in the high heat flux device GLADIS before its use in AUG is presented. The LTM was additively manufactured using selective laser melting, consisting of a 1.5mm porous layer tungsten (W) directly attached to a solid W bulk. The LTM has a plasma-facing area of 16×40mm2 and was filled with 1.54g of Sn. In GLADIS, the module was exposed to power loads between 2 and 8MWm−2 for 1 up to 10s, first unfilled and later filled with Sn. The surface temperature was monitored with infrared imaging and pyrometry. The thermal response was used to compare with simulations in Ansys Mechanical, enabling a determination of the module’s effective thermal properties. Sn droplets could be observed on the infrared camera, until a surface temperature of about a 1000°C was reached. The enhanced wetting of tin on the plasma-facing surface, which was observed by a visible camera, suggests that there is a conditioning of the surface, possibly due to the removal of impurities and oxides. Subsequent examinations of the adjacent tile revealed minor Sn leakages emanating from the module’s edge. Furthermore, the module showed no indication of mechanical failure. Therefore, these results indicated that the LTM qualifies for the heat fluxes expected in ASDEX Upgrade.

The agro-livestock sector produces about one third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Since more energy is needed to meet the growing demand for food and the industrial revolution in agriculture, renewable energy sources could improve access to energy resources and energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and reduce GHG emissions. Hydrogen production is a promising energy technology, but its deployment in the global energy system is lagging. Here, we analyzed the theoretical and practical application of green hydrogen generated by electrolysis of water, powered by renewable energy sources, in the agro-livestock sector. Green hydrogen is at an early stage of development in most applications, and barriers to its large-scale deployment remain. Appropriate policies and financial incentives could make it a profitable technology for the future.

For refrigeration and power systems, the minichannel heat exchangers are becoming attractive for transcritical CO2 Rankine cycle and supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle, due to their highly compact construction, high heat transfer coefficient, high pressure capability and lower fluid inventory. This paper employs three-dimensional numerical models to investigate the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of supercritical CO2 in minichannels. The models consider real gas thermophysical properties and buoyancy effect and investigate the effect of cross-section geometry on the thermohydraulic characteristics. Six minichannel cross-section geometries with the same hydraulic diameter of 1.22 mm are considered. The geometries include circle, semicircle, square, equilateral triangle, rectangle (aspect ratio = 2) and ellipse (aspect ratio = 2). The inlet temperature, outlet pressure and wall heat flux are 35 °C/75 bar/100 kW/m2 and 35 °C/150 bar/300 kW/m2 for heating conditions and 120 °C/75 bar/-100 kW/m2 and 120 °C/150 bar/-300 kW/m2 for cooling conditions. Comparisons of local Nusselt number and friction factor with those employed empirical correlations are made and useful information and guidelines are provided for the design of compact heat exchangers for supercritical CO2 power system applications.

Activated sludge from municipal wastewater treatment processes can be used directly for the production of biodegradable polyesters from the family of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). However, municipal activated sludge typically cannot accumulate PHAs to very high levels and often low yields of polymer produced on substrate are observed. In the present work, it was found that the presence of calcium promotes selective growth and enrichment of the PHA-storing biomass fraction and significantly improved both PHA contents and yields. Calcium addition resulted in PHA contents of 0.60 ± 0.03 gPHA/gVSS and average PHA yields on substrate of 0.49 ± 0.03 gCODPHA/gCODHAc compared to 0.35 ± 0.01 gPHA/gVSS and 0.19 ± 0.01 gCODPHA/gCODHAc without calcium addition. After 48 h, three times more PHA was produced compared to control experiments without calcium addition. Higher PHA content and selective biomass production is proposed to be a consequence of calcium dependent increased levels of passive acetate uptake. Such more efficient substrate uptake could be related to a formation of calcium acetate complexes. Findings lead to bioprocess methods to stimulate a short-term selective growth of PHA-storing microorganisms and this enables improvements to the techno-economic feasibility for municipal waste activated sludge to become a generic resource for industrial scale PHA production.
