description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2023Publisher:IEEE Authors: Suksi; Jutta; Palviainen, Marko; The near real-time data and edge processing capabilities (EDPCs), such as AI and prediction capabilities at the edge of the networks, will offer emerging possibilities to develop digital solutions to assist in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in cities, city-districts, and buildings. These new solutions can improve situational-awareness and assist users in monitoring, controlling, planning, and decision-making tasks. There will be multiple owners or holders for EDPCs and the leverage of EDPCs in achieving SDGs requires that there are incentives and means to exchange these assets in urban environments. This paper focuses on the analysis carried out within the scope of data marketplaces and determines the requirements and research themes for enabling the exchange and trade of EDPCs in the future cities.

Therefore, in this paper, we examine how sustainability is measured in the wood fibre-based production chain. We explore the theme by presenting the findings from 2 workshops and 16 recent interviews with executives of 10 companies involved in the production chain. The interviewees recognised the value of sustainability from the perspectives of saving the planet, the company/employee images, competitive advantage and cost savings. In this study, we highlight the economic sustainability key performance indicators (KPIs) as challenging and requiring further studies and methods. We also emphasise the fact that sustainability data would not only comply with reporting requirements but would also increase and improve the sustainability performance of industrial operations and processes. Managerial and theoretical implications consist of clarifying and synthesising scattered viewpoints about measuring sustainability since practical sustainability-related indicators and KPIs are presented in this paper.

Baghdadi, Mohamed El in OpenAIRECharging Management Strategy is a critical aspect in electric bus fleets to minimize the impact on the local electricity grid and to minimize the financial cost to the bus operators. To realize a fleet of battery electric public transport buses in a city depends on two major stakeholders, namely the city bus operator and the electricity distribution systems operator. The cost of the electric charging infrastructure, including the high powered ultrafast DC chargers for opportunity charging and lower powered depot chargers for overnight charging is a significant investment for the city bus operator in terms of capital, installation, and grid connection costs, while the distribution system operator has to contend with significant power load on the electricity grid when multiple ultrafast chargers are in operation. This paper investigates a Use Case of an electric bus fleet plying a route, and the optimal selection of chargers, charging duration, and battery State of Charge that will minimize the impact on the local grid and minimize the total cost of ownership. A Simple Optimization algorithm was utilized for this purpose. Results show that the objectives are mutually exclusive, and there need to be a tradeoff to achieve the optimal balance between grid impact and total cost of ownership. Results also show that grid impact and the total cost of ownership are both minimized when opting for low c-rate charging instead of high c-rate charging or when charging only for short durations. Finally, an ECO-charging technique based on utilizing short-duration pulsed charging followed by cool-down periods instead of charging in one continuous long-duration pulse was investigated to determine its efficacy in lowering the energy requirements of the bus by reducing the battery heat generation due to high c-rate charging. The optimum charging-to-cooldown ratio and the optimum charging pulse was found using brute force method to determine the lowest cooling energy consumption for a variety of charging rates. Results show that up to 5% reduction in grid impact can be achieved due to implementation of ECO-charging technique.

To improve the quality of products and increase productivity within software development processes, all phases of the development process must fit together well. While defining requirements for the system, it must be ensured that the correct requirements are defined as well as ensure that they can be translated into a design fulfilling the requirements. The earlier the correct requirements are found, the easier and cheaper it will be to design good products. Finally, the design must be verified against the correct requirements. To realize this, requirements traceability is of extreme importance for development processes. The non-functional requirements (NFR) are particularly important and difficult. In this paper, we will report on an integrated tooling solution for a Domain-Specific Modelling approach that enables and guides towards defining accurate and non-conflicting requirements. Additionally, the solution enables a full bidirectional traceability from the requirements to models to the implementation, and offers an up-to-date overall view of the state of the requirements within the product.

Anttila, Joel in OpenAIREIndependent and comparable information about the performance of commercial electric buses is sparse. Despite the high overall powertrain efficiency of electric buses, considerable differences are found between different bus models. This paper adds a powertrain efficiency test to a previous measurement method to further advance the performance testing of heavy-duty electric vehicles in laboratory conditions. The method is applied on five commercially available battery-electric city buses and the results are assessed on a common framework. The results showed up to 28% difference on payload-specific energy consumption between highest and lowest consuming buses and noticeable disparity between specific powertrain efficiency curves.

Reda, Francesco in OpenAIREThe fact that occupant behaviour has a large effect on buildings' energy consumption is well accepted. Occupants affect energy consumption by their behaviours: using lighting, appliances, thermostats etc. and interacting with envelope components such as windows and blinds. During last decades, specific ICT solutions have been developed for addressing behavioural changes toward energy saving and consequently leading to energy conscious occupant behaviours. This paper presents a mean of interaction between sensors and users for tackling behavioural changes toward energy saving in homes. This is based on premade rules and instructions (referred to as recipes), meant for tackling energy hungry everyday life actions. Moreover, it investigates the use of nonintrusive appliance load monitoring (NIALM) system. Among all the available off the shelfs sensors, NIALM seems to be very promising, especially if combined with self-learning algorithms, for detecting energy consumption of electrical appliances. This combination can potentially solve existing constrains: detecting and identifying appliances with very small or continuous electricity consumption or that turn on or turn off slowly. Literature information have been cross checked with home energy consumption monitored data in order to create pre-formulated energy recipes for empowering occupants addressing specific energy hungry behaviours. Besides establishing virtuous occupant behaviours, devoted to a rational and judicious use of energy, the adoption of energy recipes aims to generate critical knowledge about the intrinsic meaning of technical variables.

Additionally, auxiliary systems such as cabin heating-cooling, air compressor, and power steering consume energy. One way to optimize the consumption is a Driver's Aid System (DAS). Based on the route information, DAS provides the driver the optimal driving suggestions, and simultaneously may optimise the energy use of auxiliary systems. These approaches are discussed in the paper. When the optimal air compressor operation was introduced, vehicle energy consumption was decreased 1.6 %. In addition to guiding the auxiliary devices and the driver, prospects of using DAS as a communication hub for managing buses, their charging and to share information for a bus operator are discussed.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Article 2018Publisher:IEEE Authors: Uski, Sanna; Sarsama; Janne; Rosqvist, Tony; This paper studies the effect of joint ownership of microgrids as a means to share the owners' annual cost/profit risks and create incentives for investing in microgrids instead of underground cabling. Underground cabling is acknowledged as a costly and often times unprofitable - but unavoidable - solution for the distribution network operator (DNO) to improve the distribution network resiliency to interruptions in rural areas in Finland. The study demonstrates how the ratio of ownership and mutual agreements would affect the distribution of monetary risk between the DNO and the customers forming the microgrid (i.e. User group), which are the key shareholders. The methodological basis is the standard mean-variance analysis related to volatile assets and the Value-At-Risk concept, which reflects the risk attitude of the shareholders. The methodology presupposes and examines the DNO to be permitted have a double role as the traditional operator of power distribution, and being a small-scale power producer together with the prosumers. The demonstrated case shows how mutual arrangements of ownership shares and fees may be determined such that a joint investment in a microgrid system outperforms the underground cabling solution in terms of annual cost/profit. The study could pave a way to a systematic risk-based means of communicating risk attitude and incentive to form a microgrid in cases where underground cabling seems unfeasible.
