description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2013 FrancePublisher:D.M. HOGARTH Authors: Chopart, Jean-Louis; Bonnal, Laurent; Martiné, Jean-François; Sabatier, Daniel; Two studies conducted in Guadeloupe (West Indies) and Réunion (Indian Ocean) islands were designed to investigate the benefits of producing sugarcane as an energy crop and to assess the influence of agroclimatic factors on energy efficiency, respectively. In this context, it is essential to know the low heating value of the dry above-ground biomass (LHVd, MJ/kg) and its energy yield (EY, MJ/m2) in order to select the best varieties and set up a payment method for growers. Eighteen Poaceae (sugarcane and Erianthus) cultivars were compared under wet tropical environmental conditions in Guadeloupe. Three sugarcane cultivars were studied in four contrasting environments in Réunion. The partition sampling and biomass measurement procedures were identical at both locations. Low heating value (LHV) predictions were achieved using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) after specific calibration (Guadeloupe), or arithmetically after lignocellulosic compound prediction (Réunion). In both studies, LHV variability was very low and slightly dependent on the site, cultivar and above-ground biomass components (millable stalks and tops, and green and dead leaves). Considering the overall dry above-ground biomass (DAB, kg/m2), the LHVd was calculated by averaging 159 samples (mean 16.65 MJ/kg) in Guadeloupe and 315 samples (mean 16.45 MJ/kg) for Réunion. An excellent linear relationship between the DAB and its EY, regardless of cultivar, age and environment, was found (n = 474 and R² = 0.99). Sugarcane energy content assessment could thus be simplified by measuring the DAB, while enabling development of a faster method of payment for growers based on the DAB measurement and the correlation between DAB and EY. Finally, the findings of this study should allow growers to rapidly determine the commercial value of their sugarcane crops, and also enable purchasers to assess the amount of recoverable energy. As wastes contain pollutants precursors, it is of great interest regarding technical and environmental aspects to study their behavior in air gasification. Five fuels have been studied: Poplar, SRF wood, and three different mixtures of SRF wood and 20% of either tire (mix A), or plastics (mix B) or sewage sludge (mix C). After confirming their capacity of substituting raw wood in order to produce synthetic gas (syngas), emissions analyses have been performed on syngas, condensable matter and remaining char. A focus on sulfur, nitrogen and heavy metals brought to light differences and similarities between different SRF and raw wood. Stopping illegal timber harvesting and adopting reduced-impact logging in the tropics, together with wildfire suppression, could cost-effectively reduce carbon emissions and enhance carbon uptake. Carbon uptake in degraded forests could be enhanced by better postlogging forest management practices and active restoration. REDD+ goals related to forest degradation are more achievable than ever due in part to recent improvements in remote sensing techniques for monitoring logging and wildfires coupled with increasing availability of hand-held global positioning systems, especially if the synergy with ongoing forest certification is fully utilised.

This paper analyzes the factors influencing the adoption of Mucuna pruriens in the Western cotton zone of Burkina Faso. The data were collected in 3 villages by participative data collection methods and by conducting a survey with 50 farmers involved in the development of Mucuna production techniques adapted to local farming systems characteristics. The co-construction of these techniques was carried out from 2005 to 2015 according to an action research approach in partnership. The results of the logistic regression showed that the variables which positively influence the decision to adopt are the number of workers and pit dunghills, sex, market access, experimentation of M. pruriens by farmers, the practice of animal fattening (P<0.1) and the number of participations to the innovation platform meetings (P<0.05). On the other hand, the quantity of urea applied by hectare and the farm income affect negatively the adoption (P<0.01). The success of development actions of forage legumes cultivation requires taking rational account of these factors.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2014 FrancePublisher:s.n. Authors: Pelenc, Jérôme; Bazile, Didier; Ceruti, Cristian; The goal of this action-research was to identify and empower the grassroots innovative actors of la Campana-Peñuelas biosphere reserve (central Chile). The objective of this empowerment process was to create a capacity of collective action among these actors to enable them to access the management board of the biosphere reserve and to foster sustainable local development. From a theoretical perspective, we investigate how the different concepts of empowerment, collective agency, collective capability and collective action can be related within the framework of Human Development and Capability Approach. From an empirical perspective, we first conducted a qualitative survey to identify the grassroots innovative actors. We identified 22 genuinely innovative actors through the survey we conducted. These actors were not, in the terms of the capability approach, free to "do" and to "be" what they value i.e. to implement sustainable lifestyles. Indeed, they suffered several barriers, including an absence of support from conventional institutions, competition with conventional agribusiness and mass tourism forms, lack of visibility, lack of organization, lack of participation in decision making about sustainable development in local and regional policies. In brief, although they are inventing tomorrow's sustainable lifestyles by adapting themselves to global change, their work receives little attention, and they are neither organized nor empowered. Consequently, we invited the 22 actors to a workshop which aimed to foster the emergence of a collective identity through "sustainable innovation" and through the collective identification of problems that limit the group's agency. The major outcome of the workshop was the creation of a non-profit organization, called Acción Biosfera, by some of the participants. The process of creating Acción Biosfera was then analysed to examine the new collective capabilities gained by these actors. We conclude that it is possible to foster collective action among innovative actors by focusing on building collective identity among them and by enhancing their collective agency thus shifting them from a collection of individuals to an autonomous group. The creation of Acción Biosfera demonstrated the success of this process. In conclusion, we argue that Acción Biosfera is an example of an organization that aims to foster a truly bottom-up development process and to build socio-ecological resilience of the biosphere reserve territory at the local level. Van De Steene, Laurent in OpenAIRESubstitution of fossils reducers by charcoal from woody biomass is one of the most suitable option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of metallurgical industries. The main problem involved in fossils reducers replacement is the lack of mechanical strength of charcoal. Aim of this study is to investigate the impact of pyrolysis parameters, such as temperature and solid residence time, on the mechanical properties of charcoal. Charcoal was produced from two woody biomasses, Eucalyptus globulus and Picea abies (Spruce), in a pilot scale fixed bed rector; with three temperatures (500, 650 and 800 °C) and two solid residence times (0 and 90 min). The particle sizes used were close to those in the industry. Charcoals were characterized by proximate and ultimate analysis, apparent density, friability and compressive strength. Results show an increase in charcoal mechanical strength with increasing pyrolysis temperature. On the other hand solid residence time has a little influence on the mechanical properties. Eucalyptus has a higher density than Spruce, but Eucalyptus charcoal shows a lower mechanical stability than Spruce charcoal independently of the pyrolysis conditions.
