    Abstract Constructal theory has been used in several scientific fields since it has been established a decade ago. It mainly treats of the “area to point” flow problem, which has been first-written in the frame of the cooling of a finite-size volume generating heat. This problem, widely discussed in literature, has been optimized thanks to constructal theory formulated by Bejan, with a deterministic approach. However, some of the physical and mathematical assumptions made to simplify the problem are questionable, especially the ones regarding the high-conductivity material constituting the tree-shaped structure. In this paper, the performances of constructal designs are evaluated using a finite volume method, which allows making a comparison between different constructal geometries. An algorithm has been developed which has the ability for restraining constructal networks inside a finite-size area, without overconstraining the structure. All things considered, this paper examines constructal theory from a new point of view thanks to analytical and numerical investigations, in the frame of a finite-size volume generating heat.

    AbstractWe study the propagation of cosmological gravitational wave (GW) backgrounds from the early radiation era until the present day in modified theories of gravity. Comparing to general relativity (GR), we study the effects that modified gravity parameters, such as the GW friction αMand the tensor speed excessαT, have on the present-day GW spectrum. We use both the WKB estimate, which provides an analytical description but fails at superhorizon scales, and numerical simulations that allow us to go beyond the WKB approximation. We show that a constantαTmakes relatively insignificant changes to the GR solution, especially taking into account the constraints on its value from GW observations by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, whileαMcan introduce modifications to the spectral slopes of the GW energy spectrum in the low-frequency regime depending on the considered time evolution ofαM. The latter effect is additional to the damping or growth occurring equally at all scales that can be predicted by the WKB approximation. In light of the recent observations by pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations, and the potential observations by future detectors such as SKA, LISA, DECIGO, BBO, or ET, we show that, in most of the cases, constraints cannot be placed on the effects ofαMand the initial GW energy density ℰ*GWseparately, but only on the combined effects of the two, unless the signal is observed at different frequency ranges. In particular, we provide some constraints on the combined effects from the reported PTA observations.

    Aluminium powder is of major interest in many applications but it presents a risk due to its high explosibility, particularly when dispersed in air. The safety is directly linked to the particles oxidation because the Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE), which is required to initiate an Al dust explosion, increases with the oxide layer thickness. This study provides a controlled method to furnish reproducible homogeneous set of powder for such safety studies. Thanks to a new experimental bench, the influence on the oxidation rate of seven treatment parameters is investigated (current density, time of treatment, acid concentration, mass of powder, particles size, stirring, neutralisation by ammonia solution). The oxide content is plotted versus the current density, the time and the acid concentration to provide reference curves for further elaboration of oxidised powder. The particles size of sieved powder is measured before and after treatment by different methods (optical and Scanning Electron Microscopes, laser measurement). A high refinement of the powder in terms of size distribution is achieved thanks to the employed sieving. The present bench and the elaborated procedure are of great interest to provide well-calibrated oxidised powder directly available for safety studies. The time must be adjusted, depending on the wanted oxide content--from 2 to 18 wt.% - and the other treatment parameters must be kept constant: acid concentration (5 wt.%), current density (1 Adm(-2)), treated powder (20 g). In these conditions, the ratio of the oxide layer thickness on the particles diameter is found to be constant for a given oxide content whatever the particles size.

    Abstract In this work, we propose an acoustic energy harvesting metamaterial consisting of an array of silicone rubber pillars and a PZT patch deposited on an ultrathin aluminum plate with several holes based on locally resonant mechanism. The resonance is formed by removing four pillars, drilling a few of holes and attaching the PZT patch on the aluminum plate. The strain energy originating from an incident acoustic wave is centralized in the resonant region, and the PZT patch is used to convert the elastic strain energy into electrical power. Numerical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed millimeter-scale harvester with holes obviously improves the effect of acoustic energy harvesting while performing at the subwavelength scale for sonic low-frequency environment (less than 1150 Hz). In addition, the experimental results demonstrate that the maximum output voltage and power of the proposed acoustic energy harvesting system with 16 holes of 2 mm radius are 3 and 10 times higher than those without holes at the resonant mode for 2 Pa of incident acoustic pressure. Both the number and size of holes have a significant effect on the performance of acoustic energy harvesting. The advantages of the proposed structure are easy-to-machine and full of practicality, and it can be used in broad applications for low-frequency acoustic energy harvesting.

    Abstract We single out the role of fully coherent induced gluon radiation on light hadron production in pA collisions. The effect has the same general features as for quarkonium production, however with a richer color structure as the induced radiation depends on the global color charge of the partonic subprocess final state. Baseline predictions for light hadron nuclear suppression in pPb collisions at the LHC are provided, taking into account only the effect of fully coherent energy loss, which proves to be of the same order of magnitude as gluon shadowing or saturation. This underlines the need to include fully coherent energy loss in phenomenological studies of hadron production in pA collisions.

    A mathematical simulation method was developed for visualization of the diffuse reflected light on a surface of 3-layered models of urinary bladder wall. Five states, from normal to precancerous, of the urinary bladder epithelium were simulated. With the use of solutions of classical electrodynamics equations, scattering coefficientsμsand asymmetry parametersgof the bladder epithelium were found in order to perform Monte Carlo calculations. The results, compared with the experimental studies, has revealed the influence of the changes in absorption and scattering properties on diffuse-reflectance signal distributions on the surfaces of the modelled media.

    Abstract Pellet edge localized mode (ELM) triggering is a well-established scheme for decreasing the time between two successive ELM crashes below its natural value. Reliable ELM pacing has been demonstrated experimentally in several devices, increasing the ELM frequency considerably. However, it was also shown that the frequency cannot be increased arbitrarily due to a so-called lag-time. During this time, after a preceding natural or triggered ELM crash, neither a natural ELM crash occurs nor is it possible to trigger an ELM crash by pellet injection. For this article, pellet ELM triggering simulations are advanced beyond previous studies in two ways. Firstly, realistic E × B and diamagnetic background flows are included. And secondly, the pellet is injected at different stages of the pedestal build-up. This allows us to recover the lag time for the first time in simulations and investigate it in detail. A series of nonlinear extended MHD simulations is performed to investigate the plasma dynamics resulting from an injection at different time points during the pedestal build-up. The experimentally observed lag-time is qualitatively reproduced. In particular, a sharp transition is observed between the regime where no ELMs can be triggered and the regime where pellet injection causes an ELM crash. Via variations of pellet parameters and injection time, the two regimes are studied and compared in detail, revealing pronounced differences in the nonlinear dynamics. The toroidal mode spectrum is significantly broader when an ELM crash is triggered, enhancing the stochasticity and therefore also the losses of thermal energy along magnetic field lines. In the heat fluxes to the divertor targets, pronounced toroidal asymmetries are observed. In the case of high injection velocities leading to deep penetration, the excitation of core modes like the 2/1 neoclassical tearing mode is also observed.

    AbstractCosmic Ray Albedo Neutron Decay (CRAND) has been recently confirmed as a source of energetic electrons at the inner edge of the inner belt by the Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment (CSSWE) mission. Here we use observations from the Detection of Electro‐Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions (DEMETER) mission, to investigate the CRAND contribution to inner belt electrons quantitatively over a broad energy range (~100–800 keV). Spectral fitting analysis supports the conclusion that CRAND is the most important electron source at the inner edge of the inner belt. For the first time, we show that CRAND is the dominant source of >250‐keV quasitrapped electrons throughout the inner belt and slot region during quiet times. We suggest that additional sources for <250‐keV electrons exist, perhaps from inward transport. In contrast, dynamics of electrons in the inner belt and slot region is dominated by injections during active times.

    The combination of photonics and silicon technology is a great challenge because of the potentiality of coupling electronics and optical functions on a single chip. Silicon nanocrystals are promising in various areas of photonics especially for light-emitting functionality and for photovoltaic cells. This review describes the recent achievements and remaining challenges of Si photonics with emphasis on the perspectives of Si nanoscale materials. Many of the results and properties can be simulated and understood based on theoretical studies. However, some of the key questions like the light-emitting mechanism are subjects of intense debates despite a remarkable progress in the recent years. Even more complex and important is to move the known experimental observations towards practical applications. The demonstrated devices and approaches are often too complex and/or have too low efficiency. However, the challenge to combine optical and electrical functions on a chip is very strong, and we expect more research activity in the field of Si nanophotonics in the future.

    Abstract Constructal theory has been used in several scientific fields since it has been established a decade ago. It mainly treats of the “area to point” flow problem, which has been first-written in the frame of the cooling of a finite-size volume generating heat. This problem, widely discussed in literature, has been optimized thanks to constructal theory formulated by Bejan, with a deterministic approach. However, some of the physical and mathematical assumptions made to simplify the problem are questionable, especially the ones regarding the high-conductivity material constituting the tree-shaped structure. In this paper, the performances of constructal designs are evaluated using a finite volume method, which allows making a comparison between different constructal geometries. An algorithm has been developed which has the ability for restraining constructal networks inside a finite-size area, without overconstraining the structure. All things considered, this paper examines constructal theory from a new point of view thanks to analytical and numerical investigations, in the frame of a finite-size volume generating heat.

    AbstractWe study the propagation of cosmological gravitational wave (GW) backgrounds from the early radiation era until the present day in modified theories of gravity. Comparing to general relativity (GR), we study the effects that modified gravity parameters, such as the GW friction αMand the tensor speed excessαT, have on the present-day GW spectrum. We use both the WKB estimate, which provides an analytical description but fails at superhorizon scales, and numerical simulations that allow us to go beyond the WKB approximation. We show that a constantαTmakes relatively insignificant changes to the GR solution, especially taking into account the constraints on its value from GW observations by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration, whileαMcan introduce modifications to the spectral slopes of the GW energy spectrum in the low-frequency regime depending on the considered time evolution ofαM. The latter effect is additional to the damping or growth occurring equally at all scales that can be predicted by the WKB approximation. In light of the recent observations by pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations, and the potential observations by future detectors such as SKA, LISA, DECIGO, BBO, or ET, we show that, in most of the cases, constraints cannot be placed on the effects ofαMand the initial GW energy density ℰ*GWseparately, but only on the combined effects of the two, unless the signal is observed at different frequency ranges. In particular, we provide some constraints on the combined effects from the reported PTA observations.

    Aluminium powder is of major interest in many applications but it presents a risk due to its high explosibility, particularly when dispersed in air. The safety is directly linked to the particles oxidation because the Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE), which is required to initiate an Al dust explosion, increases with the oxide layer thickness. This study provides a controlled method to furnish reproducible homogeneous set of powder for such safety studies. Thanks to a new experimental bench, the influence on the oxidation rate of seven treatment parameters is investigated (current density, time of treatment, acid concentration, mass of powder, particles size, stirring, neutralisation by ammonia solution). The oxide content is plotted versus the current density, the time and the acid concentration to provide reference curves for further elaboration of oxidised powder. The particles size of sieved powder is measured before and after treatment by different methods (optical and Scanning Electron Microscopes, laser measurement). A high refinement of the powder in terms of size distribution is achieved thanks to the employed sieving. The present bench and the elaborated procedure are of great interest to provide well-calibrated oxidised powder directly available for safety studies. The time must be adjusted, depending on the wanted oxide content--from 2 to 18 wt.% - and the other treatment parameters must be kept constant: acid concentration (5 wt.%), current density (1 Adm(-2)), treated powder (20 g). In these conditions, the ratio of the oxide layer thickness on the particles diameter is found to be constant for a given oxide content whatever the particles size.

    Abstract In this work, we propose an acoustic energy harvesting metamaterial consisting of an array of silicone rubber pillars and a PZT patch deposited on an ultrathin aluminum plate with several holes based on locally resonant mechanism. The resonance is formed by removing four pillars, drilling a few of holes and attaching the PZT patch on the aluminum plate. The strain energy originating from an incident acoustic wave is centralized in the resonant region, and the PZT patch is used to convert the elastic strain energy into electrical power. Numerical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed millimeter-scale harvester with holes obviously improves the effect of acoustic energy harvesting while performing at the subwavelength scale for sonic low-frequency environment (less than 1150 Hz). In addition, the experimental results demonstrate that the maximum output voltage and power of the proposed acoustic energy harvesting system with 16 holes of 2 mm radius are 3 and 10 times higher than those without holes at the resonant mode for 2 Pa of incident acoustic pressure. Both the number and size of holes have a significant effect on the performance of acoustic energy harvesting. The advantages of the proposed structure are easy-to-machine and full of practicality, and it can be used in broad applications for low-frequency acoustic energy harvesting.

    Abstract We single out the role of fully coherent induced gluon radiation on light hadron production in pA collisions. The effect has the same general features as for quarkonium production, however with a richer color structure as the induced radiation depends on the global color charge of the partonic subprocess final state. Baseline predictions for light hadron nuclear suppression in pPb collisions at the LHC are provided, taking into account only the effect of fully coherent energy loss, which proves to be of the same order of magnitude as gluon shadowing or saturation. This underlines the need to include fully coherent energy loss in phenomenological studies of hadron production in pA collisions.

    A mathematical simulation method was developed for visualization of the diffuse reflected light on a surface of 3-layered models of urinary bladder wall. Five states, from normal to precancerous, of the urinary bladder epithelium were simulated. With the use of solutions of classical electrodynamics equations, scattering coefficientsμsand asymmetry parametersgof the bladder epithelium were found in order to perform Monte Carlo calculations. The results, compared with the experimental studies, has revealed the influence of the changes in absorption and scattering properties on diffuse-reflectance signal distributions on the surfaces of the modelled media.

    Abstract Pellet edge localized mode (ELM) triggering is a well-established scheme for decreasing the time between two successive ELM crashes below its natural value. Reliable ELM pacing has been demonstrated experimentally in several devices, increasing the ELM frequency considerably. However, it was also shown that the frequency cannot be increased arbitrarily due to a so-called lag-time. During this time, after a preceding natural or triggered ELM crash, neither a natural ELM crash occurs nor is it possible to trigger an ELM crash by pellet injection. For this article, pellet ELM triggering simulations are advanced beyond previous studies in two ways. Firstly, realistic E × B and diamagnetic background flows are included. And secondly, the pellet is injected at different stages of the pedestal build-up. This allows us to recover the lag time for the first time in simulations and investigate it in detail. A series of nonlinear extended MHD simulations is performed to investigate the plasma dynamics resulting from an injection at different time points during the pedestal build-up. The experimentally observed lag-time is qualitatively reproduced. In particular, a sharp transition is observed between the regime where no ELMs can be triggered and the regime where pellet injection causes an ELM crash. Via variations of pellet parameters and injection time, the two regimes are studied and compared in detail, revealing pronounced differences in the nonlinear dynamics. The toroidal mode spectrum is significantly broader when an ELM crash is triggered, enhancing the stochasticity and therefore also the losses of thermal energy along magnetic field lines. In the heat fluxes to the divertor targets, pronounced toroidal asymmetries are observed. In the case of high injection velocities leading to deep penetration, the excitation of core modes like the 2/1 neoclassical tearing mode is also observed.

    AbstractCosmic Ray Albedo Neutron Decay (CRAND) has been recently confirmed as a source of energetic electrons at the inner edge of the inner belt by the Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment (CSSWE) mission. Here we use observations from the Detection of Electro‐Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions (DEMETER) mission, to investigate the CRAND contribution to inner belt electrons quantitatively over a broad energy range (~100–800 keV). Spectral fitting analysis supports the conclusion that CRAND is the most important electron source at the inner edge of the inner belt. For the first time, we show that CRAND is the dominant source of >250‐keV quasitrapped electrons throughout the inner belt and slot region during quiet times. We suggest that additional sources for <250‐keV electrons exist, perhaps from inward transport. In contrast, dynamics of electrons in the inner belt and slot region is dominated by injections during active times.

    The combination of photonics and silicon technology is a great challenge because of the potentiality of coupling electronics and optical functions on a single chip. Silicon nanocrystals are promising in various areas of photonics especially for light-emitting functionality and for photovoltaic cells. This review describes the recent achievements and remaining challenges of Si photonics with emphasis on the perspectives of Si nanoscale materials. Many of the results and properties can be simulated and understood based on theoretical studies. However, some of the key questions like the light-emitting mechanism are subjects of intense debates despite a remarkable progress in the recent years. Even more complex and important is to move the known experimental observations towards practical applications. The demonstrated devices and approaches are often too complex and/or have too low efficiency. However, the challenge to combine optical and electrical functions on a chip is very strong, and we expect more research activity in the field of Si nanophotonics in the future.
