description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2013 DenmarkPublisher:Elsevier BV Zhu, Chaofeng; Chaussedent, Stéphane; Liu, Shujiang; Zhang, Yanfei; Monteil, André; Gaumer, Nathalie; Yue, Yuanzheng; The Eu and Eu/Tb doped silicate glasses are good candidates for light emitting diode (LED) applications. But the optical performance of these glasses is sensitive to variations in chemical composition. In this paper we report our recent findings about the effect of addition of minor components such as B2O3, Al2O3 and CaF2 on the luminescent properties of the above-mentioned glasses. We explore the role of Eu3+ ions as a structural probe of the glasses by determining the asymmetry factor, i.e., the ratio of the emission intensity of the 5D0→7F25D0→7F2 transition to that of the 5D0→7F15D0→7F1 transition. The results show that the asymmetry factor and luminescence lifetimes of as-prepared materials are dependent on composition. White fluorescence is achieved in Eu/Tb co-doped glasses, which can be attributed to the simultaneous generation of red, green and blue wavelengths from Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions. The variation of the excitation wavelength can tune the emission spectra as well as Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of Eu/Tb co-doped glasses for specific applications. The energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ ions is investigated by analyzing fluorescence spectra and decay curves.

The proposed algorithm, dedicated to an electric vehicular application, is based on a self-gain scheduled controller, which guarantees the H∞ performance for a class of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. Assuming that the duty cycle of the involved DC-DC converters are considered as the variable parameters, that can be captured in real time, and forwarded to the controller to ensure both; the performance and robustness of the closed-loop system. The subsequent controller is therefore time-varying and it is automatically scheduled according to each parameter variation. This algorithm has been validated through experimental results provided by a tailor-made test bench including both the HESS and the vehicle traction emulation system. The experimental results demonstrate the overall stability of the system, where the proposed LPV supervisor successfully accomplishes a power frequency splitting in an adequate way, respecting the dynamic of the sources. The proposed solution provides significant performances for different speed levels.

Sea turtles are an iconic group of marine megafauna that have been exposed to multiple anthropogenic threats across their different life stages, especially in the past decades. This has resulted in population declines, and consequently many sea turtle populations are now classified as threatened or endangered globally. Although some populations of sea turtles worldwide are showing early signs of recovery, many still face fundamental threats. This is problematic since sea turtles have important ecological roles. To encourage informed conservation planning and direct future research, we surveyed experts to identify the key contemporary threats (climate change, direct take, fisheries, pollution, disease, predation, and coastal and marine development) faced by sea turtles. Using the survey results and current literature, we also outline knowledge gaps in our understanding of the impact of these threats and how targeted future research, often involving emerging technologies, could close those gaps.

We envisage this process as a particular form of market innovation in which new product qualities are inscribed into market architectures. We focus on the market for clean technologies that emerged as a result of the EU Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) directive that required polluting industries, including livestock farms, to implement the “best available techniques” in order to reduce their emissions. Our case study traces a Danish start-up firm's endeavors to commercialize one such “best available technique:” a solution for reducing ammonia emissions from farms. Building on the literature on the shaping of markets, we show that the construction of a market for clean technologies hinges upon the composition of a complex network of actors with divergent, and sometimes conflicting, interests, in which market devices (in this case, a technology list) play a pivotal role. More generally, the paper contributes to discussions on controversies and performativity in market practices and on the construction of markets designed to address environmental issues.

The problem can be seen as a kind of Diophantine problem, hence its solvability, i.e. schedulability, plays a pivotal role in many supply-chain problems. In contradiction to the traditionally offered solutions the approach proposed allows one to take into account such behavioral features as transient periods and deadlocks occurrence. So, the contribution’s aim is the modeling framework enabling an evaluation of cyclic scheduling problems solvability, i.e., the declarative approach to reachability problems regarding cyclic steady states determination as well as conditions guaranteeing assumed performance of multimodal processes executed within a concurrent cyclic processes environment.

The current applications in the energy sector are based largely on fossil fuels which release greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. To face the issue of global warming, the energy sector has to transfer to and develop sustainable energy solutions that do not release carbon emissions. This is one of the primary motivators for the SDEWES conference as well as for this review, and previous ones, examining the most recent works based on sustainable and green energy production in such fields. The 17th Conference on the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) was held on 6–10 November 2022 in Paphos, Cyprus. The SDEWES conference aims at solving complex and ongoing concerns that approach a long-term perspective and supporting innovative solutions and continuous monitoring and evaluation. This review paper aims at collecting the main presented papers focused on the following hot topics: low-carbon technologies based on renewable and clean-energy systems, including mainly biomass, solar, and wind energy applications; energy storage systems; hydrogen-based systems; energy-saving strategies in buildings; and the adoption of smart management strategies using renewable energy systems. These topics are investigated in order to propose solutions to address the issues of climate change, water scarcity, and energy saving. From the analyzed works, we note that some key issues for sustainable development remain to be further addressed: such as novel and advanced energy storage systems, green hydrogen production, novel low-temperature district heating and cooling networks, novel solar technologies for the simultaneous production of power and high temperature heat, solar desalination for hydrogen production systems, and agrivoltaic systems for the production of power and food.

Abstract Wood and other bio-based building materials are often perceived as a good choice from a climate mitigation perspective. This article compares the life cycle assessment of the same multi-residential building from the perspective of 16 countries participating in the international project Annex 72 of the International Energy Agency to determine the effects of different datasets and methods of accounting for biogenic carbon in wood construction. Three assessment methods are herein considered: two recognized in the standards (the so-called 0/0 method and –1/+1 method) and a variation of the latter (–1/+1* method) used in Australia, Canada, France, and New Zealand. The 0/0 method considers neither fixation in the production stage nor releases of biogenic carbon at the end of a wood product’s life. In contrast, the –1/+1 method accounts for the fixation of biogenic carbon in the production stage and its release in the end-of-life stage, irrespective of the disposal scenario (recycling, incineration orlandfill). The -1/+1 method assumes that landfills offer only a temporary sequestration of carbon. In the –1/+1* variation, landfills and recycling are considered a partly permanent sequestration of biogenic carbon and thus fewer emissions are accounted for in the end-of-life stage. We examine the variability of the calculated life cycle-based greenhouse gas emissions calculated for a case study building by each participating country, within the same assessment method and across the methods. The results vary substantially. The main reasons for deviations are whether or not landfills and recycling are considered a partly permanent sequestration of biogenic carbon and a mismatch in the biogenic carbon balance. Our findings support the need for further research and to develop practical guidelines to harmonize life cycle assessment methods of buildings with bio-based materials.

Experiments have been performed in the Shallow Water Wave Basin of DHI, in Denmark, on large arrays of up to 25 heaving point absorbers for a range of layout configurations and wave conditions. Float response and modification of the wave field are measured to provide data suitable for the evaluation of array interaction models and environmental scale models. Each wave energy converter unit has a diameter of 0.315 m and power absorption is due to friction of both a power take off system and bearings. Response is measured on all floats and surge force on five floats. Wave gauges are located within and around the array. Wave conditions studied include regular waves and both long- and short-crested irregular waves. A rectilinear arrangement of support structures is employed such that several float configurations can be studied. A summary is presented of the experimental arrangement with particular emphasis on the individual wave energy converters and wave conditions employed. Reasonable agreement is observed between measured response for single floats and power output and float response predicted using a linear time domain model. For an array of 25 floats, up to 16.3% reduction of significant wave height is observed down-wave and 10.8% increase observed up-wave for unidirectional irregular waves due to wave radiation by the heaving WECs. Spectra at different locations within and around the array show the wave field modifications. International audience

For the first time, the compatibility of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) derived biocrude obtained from pinewood with straight-run gas oil (SRGO) was comprehensively investigated by theoretical prediction using Hansen double sphere plots and experimental confirmation from miscibility studies to achieve a biofeed compatible for coprocessing at refineries. The Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) for biocrude, biocrude components (residue and light and heavy distillate fractions), and SRGO were determined by plotting a three-dimensional Hansen solubility sphere plot based on the experimental solubility data obtained on their solubility studies in 38 different solvents. The compatibility of HTL biocrude oil with SRGO was verified from the solubility distance (Ra) and relative energy difference (RED) values obtained from the center of their Hansen spheres and difference in HSPs, respectively, in a Hansen double sphere solubility plot. The experimental data obtained on miscibility studies confirmed that pyridine, cyclohexanone, and a pyridine-cyclohexanone solvent mixture (1:1) occupy a well-defined Hansen space and show fitting to HSPs of the biocrude-SRGO blend, improve the overall compatibility of the blending mixture, and display a maximum miscibility of 72%. To correlate the compatibility with the molecular structure, the compatibility of light, heavy, and residual fractions obtained by fractional distillation of HTL biocrude (pinewood) was also evaluated with SRGO using the Hansen double sphere plot, and a close agreement with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results as well as the experimental data on miscibility studies was verified. Furthermore, the comprehensive estimation of the detailed composition and chemical nature of biocrude and light, heavy, and residual fractions by the means of elemental (CHN/O), GC-MS, and GC × GC analysis was also presented. Additionally, the correlation between compatibility and interactions within chemical functionalities of blend components was established by analyzing the contribution of aromatic, aliphatic, and oxygen containing functional groups to the miscibility using quantitative 13C NMR spectroscopy. The present study reports a mixing strategy to assess the compatibility of biocrudes, heavy distillate fractions, asphaltenes, residues, and polymers with existing petroleum infrastructure for the cost-effective biorefinery process to balance economic and environmental considerations.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2013 DenmarkPublisher:Elsevier BV Zhu, Chaofeng; Chaussedent, Stéphane; Liu, Shujiang; Zhang, Yanfei; Monteil, André; Gaumer, Nathalie; Yue, Yuanzheng; The Eu and Eu/Tb doped silicate glasses are good candidates for light emitting diode (LED) applications.
