It is a more challenging procedure for third world countries, including Lebanon, that have limited means and potential to achieve such goals. This paper assesses the status of renewable energy systems in developing countries, and concentrates on the solar photovoltaic energy production due to its abundant availability in these countries relatively to other clean energy production methods. Comparisons of developing countries׳ achievements and goals each according to their economical, political and social considerations are conducted. Projects ranging from small scale standalone systems such as microgrids and minigrids to large scale energy production stations will be presented by dividing the countries into categories that share similar constraints and limitations in the integration of such installations. Furthermore, the paper analyzes the state of energy generation based on photovoltaic systems in Lebanon in contrast to other developing countries.

The storage system consists of a fuel cell (FC), serving as the main power source, and a supercapacitor (SC), serving as an auxiliary power source. It also contains a power block for energy conversion consisting of a boost converter connected with the main source and a boost-buck converter connected with the auxiliary source. The converters share the same dc bus which is connected to the traction motor through an inverter. These power converters must be controlled in order to meet the following requirements: i) tight dc bus voltage regulation; ii) perfect tracking of SC current to its reference; iii) and asymptotic stability of the closed loop system. A nonlinear controller is developed, on the basis of the system nonlinear model, making use of Lyapunov stability design techniques. The latter accounts for the power converters large-signal dynamics as well as for the fuel-cell nonlinear characteristics. It is demonstrated using both a formal analysis and simulations that the developed controller meets all desired objectives.

Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) provide a new strategy to enable direct biomass-to-electricity conversion, posing considerable demand on sequential enzymes. However, artificial blend of multi-enzyme systems often suffer biocatalytic inefficiency due to the rambling mixture of catalytic units. In an attempt to construct a high-performance starch/O2 EBFC, herein we prepared a starch-oxidizing bioanode based on displaying a sequential enzyme system of glucoamylase (GA) and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) on E.coli cell surfaces in a precise way using cohesin-dockerin interactions. The enzyme stoichiometry was optimized, with GA&GDH (3:1)-E.coli exhibiting the highest catalytic reaction rate. The bioanode employed polymerized methylene blue (polyMB) to collect electrons from the oxidation of NADH into NAD+, which jointly oxidized starch together with co-displayed GA and GDH. The bioanode was oxygen-insensitive, which can be combined with a laccase based biocathode, resulting in a membranless starch/O2 EBFC in a non-compartmentalized configuration. The optimal EBFC exhibited an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.74 V, a maximum power density of 30.1 ± 2.8 μW cm-2, and good operational stability.

The Paris Agreement aims to limit global mean temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This target has wide-ranging implications for Europe and its cities, which are the source of substantial proportions of greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports the state of planning for climate change by collecting and analysing local climate mitigation and adaptation plans across 885 urban areas of the EU-28. A typology and analysis framework was developed that classifies local climate plans in terms of their spatial (alignment with local, national and international policy) and sectoral integration (alignment into existing local policy documents). We document local climate plans that we call type A1: non-compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international climate networks ; A2: compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international networks ; A3: plans developed as part of international networks. This most comprehensive analysis to date reveals that there is large diversity in the availability of local climate plans with most being available in Central and Northern European cities. Approximately 66% of EU cities have an A1, A2, or A3 mitigation plan, 26% an adaptation plan, 17% joint adaptation and mitigation plans, and about 30% lack any form of local climate plan (i.e. what we classify as A1, A2, A3 plans). Mitigation plans are more numerous than adaptation plans, but mitigation does not always precede adaptation. Our analysis reveals that city size, national legislation, and international networks can influence the development of local climate plans. We found that size does matter as about 70% of the cities above 1 million inhabitants have a comprehensive and stand-alone mitigation and/or an adaptation plan (A1 or A2). Countries with national climate legislation (A2), such as Denmark, France, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, are found to have nearly twice as many urban mitigation plans, and five times more likely to produce urban adaptation plans, than countries without such legislation. A1 and A2 mitigation plans are particularly numerous in Denmark, Poland, Germany, and Finland ; while A1 and A2 adaptation plans are prevalent in Denmark, Finland, UK and France. The integration of adaptation and mitigation is country-specific and can mainly be observed in countries where local climate plans are compulsory, especially in France and the UK. Finally, local climate plans of international climate networks (A3) are mostly found in the many countries where autonomous, i.e. A1 plans are less common. The findings reported here are of international importance as they will inform and support decision-making and thinking of stakeholders with similar experiences or developments at all levels and sectors in other regions around the world.

The Paris Agreement aims to limit global mean temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This target has wide-ranging implications for Europe and its cities, which are the source of substantial proportions of greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports the state of planning for climate change by collecting and analysing local climate mitigation and adaptation plans across 885 urban areas of the EU-28. A typology and analysis framework was developed that classifies local climate plans in terms of their spatial (alignment with local, national and international policy) and sectoral integration (alignment into existing local policy documents). We document local climate plans that we call type A1: non-compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international climate networks ; A2: compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international networks ; A3: plans developed as part of international networks. This most comprehensive analysis to date reveals that there is large diversity in the availability of local climate plans with most being available in Central and Northern European cities. Approximately 66% of EU cities have an A1, A2, or A3 mitigation plan, 26% an adaptation plan, 17% joint adaptation and mitigation plans, and about 30% lack any form of local climate plan (i.e. what we classify as A1, A2, A3 plans). Mitigation plans are more numerous than adaptation plans, but mitigation does not always precede adaptation. Our analysis reveals that city size, national legislation, and international networks can influence the development of local climate plans. We found that size does matter as about 70% of the cities above 1 million inhabitants have a comprehensive and stand-alone mitigation and/or an adaptation plan (A1 or A2). Countries with national climate legislation (A2), such as Denmark, France, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, are found to have nearly twice as many urban mitigation plans, and five times more likely to produce urban adaptation plans, than countries without such legislation. A1 and A2 mitigation plans are particularly numerous in Denmark, Poland, Germany, and Finland ; while A1 and A2 adaptation plans are prevalent in Denmark, Finland, UK and France. The integration of adaptation and mitigation is country-specific and can mainly be observed in countries where local climate plans are compulsory, especially in France and the UK. Finally, local climate plans of international climate networks (A3) are mostly found in the many countries where autonomous, i.e. A1 plans are less common. The findings reported here are of international importance as they will inform and support decision-making and thinking of stakeholders with similar experiences or developments at all levels and sectors in other regions around the world.

However, existing equivalent circuit models (ECM) cannot accurately represent the battery's impedance in the inertia support working condition (ISWC). Thus, this article proposes a novel negative resistor-based ECM for BESS in ISWC. First, the principle of grid inertia support of BESS is analyzed, and the typical sustaining current profiles in ISWC are obtained. Then, the distinguished battery impedance characteristic in ISWC is experimentally obtained. To capture the special impedance characteristic, a resistor-capacitor (RC) branch with negative resistor is added to the 1-RC model (Thevenin model). Moreover, based on the difference in impedance characteristics between the conventional RC branch and the negative resistor RC branch, this article proposes a parameter separation method based on impedance characteristics to obtain an improved ECM. A comparative analysis reveals that the improved ECM outperforms conventional models, achieving an average relative error below 0.06% compared to experimental results. The improved ECM offers a simple structure, reduced computational burden, and enables rapid analysis of battery state in ISWC. Furthermore, a new simplified negative resistor-based model without altering the conventional RC model's structure is proposed. It is simple in structure with only three parameters, significantly reducing computational costs while maintaining accuracy.

Various fuel cell system solutions exist, they mainly differ depending on the desired fuel used. Hightemperature PEM (HTPEM) fuel cells offer the possibility of using liquid fuels such as methanol, due to the increased robustness of operating at higher temperatures (160-180oC). Using liquid fuels such as methanol removes the high volume demands of compressed hydrogen storages, simplifies refueling, and enables the use of existing fuel distribution systems. The liquid methanol is converted to a hydrogen rich gas with CO2 trace amounts of CO, the increased operating temperatures allow the fuel cell to tolerate much higher CO concentrations than Nafion-based membranes. The increased tolerance to CO also enables the use of reformer systems with less hydrogen cleaning steps and requirements for hydrogen purity, reducing the complexity of the reformer systems. Using hydrogen containing CO, affects the steady-state as well as dynamic electrical performance of the fuel cell, but stable operation is still possible with concentrations up to 3%. The typical polymer used in HTPEM fuel cells is polybenzimidazole (PBI), doped with phosphoric acid for proton conduction. The work will present a few different methanol reformer concepts, some experimental results of details related to reformer gas quality, control of burner temperature and the aspects of implementing advanced modeling based control approaches using the commercial Serenergy H3-350 methanol reformer system as an example.

Various fuel cell system solutions exist, they mainly differ depending on the desired fuel used. Consequential life cycle assessment (CLCA) applied to systems under continuous evolution, such as cities, usually disregard interactions among local components, how policy decisions influence them, and the value of spatial data. As a result, local environmental impacts might not be well-considered. This paper investigates how a spatially explicit system dynamics (SD) modelling approach can overcome such limitation, contributing to the advancement of CLCA. First, a novel CLCA conceptual framework is presented combining consequential life cycle inventories, SD principles and the use of spatially explicit data. Second, its innovative value is demonstrated through a proof-of-concept SD-CLCA model. This model evaluates the environmental impacts of changes in electricity supply-demand in the market due to an increasing adoption of solar photovoltaic panels (SPV) in residential buildings. It allows traceability of both system changes and their environmental consequences. For demonstration purposes, the SD-CLCA model is applied to Lisbon municipality and the broader electricity market of Portugal. Results showcase how SD-CLCA models could provide a closer representation of the real effects of predicted changes in the electricity market due to different SPV adoption scenarios. They also illustrate that changes in gross domestic product, population and precipitation provide a diversified set of impact scores. As a methodological advancement, and to the net of a few shortcomings, the proposed SD-CLCA model is able to capture the complexity of cause-effect dynamics determining environmental impacts, which currently represents a research gap in LCA.

Still, the conventional linear economy model continues to dominate business, society, and research. While the concept of better connecting physical output and input flows at multiple production or consumption levels is becoming more accepted, it remains unclear how to make this happen while ensuring that sustainability targets are met or exceeded. Multiple scientific communities contribute different perspectives to this discourse, with promising opportunities for research. Circular economy and sustainability from business and economics perspectives are multifaceted. The existing body of knowledge needs to be advanced to assist private individuals, business managers, investors, or policymakers in making informed decisions. In this article for the inaugural issue, we provide a snapshot of the discourses among those who have studied the circular economy and its related topics. We outline conceptual inroads and potential research questions to encourage further circular economy and sustainability research and discourse from business or economics perspectives as well as from the broader transdisciplinary angle. We propose three research pathways: (1) connecting output with input needs in a global circular economy; (2) beyond today's business logic for a global circular economy; and (3) inclusion of the Global South in North-dominated circular economies. For each, we propose concepts, theories, or methodological approaches and offer various perspectives from the micro, macro, and meso levels.

HCI has equal potential to find solutions for environmental challenges and script, by design, the behavioral changes needed for sustainable net futures. We explore this dichotomy through the lens of data transmission, examining the energy consumption and environmental impact of web communications. This work begins with a critical revisiting of legacy web design that mines the past for actionable ideas towards sustainable net futures. We query how we can reduce our own net energy consumption, and plot a path to design our low-power website. In addition we speculate on a redesign of the background systems, outlining the practical steps we have taken towards solar, wind, gravity and micro-hydro low-power web hosting solutions.

We explore this dichotomy through the lens of data transmission, examining the energy consumption and environmental impact of web communications. This work begins with a critical revisiting of legacy web design that mines the past for actionable ideas towards sustainable net futures. We query how we can reduce our own net energy consumption, and plot a path to design our low-power website. In addition we speculate on a redesign of the background systems, outlining the practical steps we have taken towards solar, wind, gravity and micro-hydro low-power web hosting solutions.

It is a more challenging procedure for third world countries, including Lebanon, that have limited means and potential to achieve such goals. This paper assesses the status of renewable energy systems in developing countries, and concentrates on the solar photovoltaic energy production due to its abundant availability in these countries relatively to other clean energy production methods. Comparisons of developing countries׳ achievements and goals each according to their economical, political and social considerations are conducted. Projects ranging from small scale standalone systems such as microgrids and minigrids to large scale energy production stations will be presented by dividing the countries into categories that share similar constraints and limitations in the integration of such installations. Furthermore, the paper analyzes the state of energy generation based on photovoltaic systems in Lebanon in contrast to other developing countries.

The storage system consists of a fuel cell (FC), serving as the main power source, and a supercapacitor (SC), serving as an auxiliary power source. It also contains a power block for energy conversion consisting of a boost converter connected with the main source and a boost-buck converter connected with the auxiliary source. The converters share the same dc bus which is connected to the traction motor through an inverter. These power converters must be controlled in order to meet the following requirements: i) tight dc bus voltage regulation; ii) perfect tracking of SC current to its reference; iii) and asymptotic stability of the closed loop system. A nonlinear controller is developed, on the basis of the system nonlinear model, making use of Lyapunov stability design techniques. The latter accounts for the power converters large-signal dynamics as well as for the fuel-cell nonlinear characteristics. It is demonstrated using both a formal analysis and simulations that the developed controller meets all desired objectives.

Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) provide a new strategy to enable direct biomass-to-electricity conversion, posing considerable demand on sequential enzymes. However, artificial blend of multi-enzyme systems often suffer biocatalytic inefficiency due to the rambling mixture of catalytic units. In an attempt to construct a high-performance starch/O2 EBFC, herein we prepared a starch-oxidizing bioanode based on displaying a sequential enzyme system of glucoamylase (GA) and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) on E.coli cell surfaces in a precise way using cohesin-dockerin interactions. The enzyme stoichiometry was optimized, with GA&GDH (3:1)-E.coli exhibiting the highest catalytic reaction rate. The bioanode employed polymerized methylene blue (polyMB) to collect electrons from the oxidation of NADH into NAD+, which jointly oxidized starch together with co-displayed GA and GDH. The bioanode was oxygen-insensitive, which can be combined with a laccase based biocathode, resulting in a membranless starch/O2 EBFC in a non-compartmentalized configuration. The optimal EBFC exhibited an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.74 V, a maximum power density of 30.1 ± 2.8 μW cm-2, and good operational stability.

The Paris Agreement aims to limit global mean temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This target has wide-ranging implications for Europe and its cities, which are the source of substantial proportions of greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports the state of planning for climate change by collecting and analysing local climate mitigation and adaptation plans across 885 urban areas of the EU-28. A typology and analysis framework was developed that classifies local climate plans in terms of their spatial (alignment with local, national and international policy) and sectoral integration (alignment into existing local policy documents). We document local climate plans that we call type A1: non-compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international climate networks ; A2: compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international networks ; A3: plans developed as part of international networks. This most comprehensive analysis to date reveals that there is large diversity in the availability of local climate plans with most being available in Central and Northern European cities. Approximately 66% of EU cities have an A1, A2, or A3 mitigation plan, 26% an adaptation plan, 17% joint adaptation and mitigation plans, and about 30% lack any form of local climate plan (i.e. what we classify as A1, A2, A3 plans). Mitigation plans are more numerous than adaptation plans, but mitigation does not always precede adaptation. Our analysis reveals that city size, national legislation, and international networks can influence the development of local climate plans. We found that size does matter as about 70% of the cities above 1 million inhabitants have a comprehensive and stand-alone mitigation and/or an adaptation plan (A1 or A2). Countries with national climate legislation (A2), such as Denmark, France, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, are found to have nearly twice as many urban mitigation plans, and five times more likely to produce urban adaptation plans, than countries without such legislation. A1 and A2 mitigation plans are particularly numerous in Denmark, Poland, Germany, and Finland ; while A1 and A2 adaptation plans are prevalent in Denmark, Finland, UK and France. The integration of adaptation and mitigation is country-specific and can mainly be observed in countries where local climate plans are compulsory, especially in France and the UK. Finally, local climate plans of international climate networks (A3) are mostly found in the many countries where autonomous, i.e. A1 plans are less common. The findings reported here are of international importance as they will inform and support decision-making and thinking of stakeholders with similar experiences or developments at all levels and sectors in other regions around the world.

The Paris Agreement aims to limit global mean temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This target has wide-ranging implications for Europe and its cities, which are the source of substantial proportions of greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports the state of planning for climate change by collecting and analysing local climate mitigation and adaptation plans across 885 urban areas of the EU-28. A typology and analysis framework was developed that classifies local climate plans in terms of their spatial (alignment with local, national and international policy) and sectoral integration (alignment into existing local policy documents). We document local climate plans that we call type A1: non-compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international climate networks ; A2: compulsory by national law and not developed as part of international networks ; A3: plans developed as part of international networks. This most comprehensive analysis to date reveals that there is large diversity in the availability of local climate plans with most being available in Central and Northern European cities. Approximately 66% of EU cities have an A1, A2, or A3 mitigation plan, 26% an adaptation plan, 17% joint adaptation and mitigation plans, and about 30% lack any form of local climate plan (i.e. what we classify as A1, A2, A3 plans). Mitigation plans are more numerous than adaptation plans, but mitigation does not always precede adaptation. Our analysis reveals that city size, national legislation, and international networks can influence the development of local climate plans. We found that size does matter as about 70% of the cities above 1 million inhabitants have a comprehensive and stand-alone mitigation and/or an adaptation plan (A1 or A2). Countries with national climate legislation (A2), such as Denmark, France, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, are found to have nearly twice as many urban mitigation plans, and five times more likely to produce urban adaptation plans, than countries without such legislation. A1 and A2 mitigation plans are particularly numerous in Denmark, Poland, Germany, and Finland ; while A1 and A2 adaptation plans are prevalent in Denmark, Finland, UK and France. The integration of adaptation and mitigation is country-specific and can mainly be observed in countries where local climate plans are compulsory, especially in France and the UK. Finally, local climate plans of international climate networks (A3) are mostly found in the many countries where autonomous, i.e. A1 plans are less common. The findings reported here are of international importance as they will inform and support decision-making and thinking of stakeholders with similar experiences or developments at all levels and sectors in other regions around the world.

However, existing equivalent circuit models (ECM) cannot accurately represent the battery's impedance in the inertia support working condition (ISWC). Thus, this article proposes a novel negative resistor-based ECM for BESS in ISWC. First, the principle of grid inertia support of BESS is analyzed, and the typical sustaining current profiles in ISWC are obtained. Then, the distinguished battery impedance characteristic in ISWC is experimentally obtained. To capture the special impedance characteristic, a resistor-capacitor (RC) branch with negative resistor is added to the 1-RC model (Thevenin model). Moreover, based on the difference in impedance characteristics between the conventional RC branch and the negative resistor RC branch, this article proposes a parameter separation method based on impedance characteristics to obtain an improved ECM. A comparative analysis reveals that the improved ECM outperforms conventional models, achieving an average relative error below 0.06% compared to experimental results. The improved ECM offers a simple structure, reduced computational burden, and enables rapid analysis of battery state in ISWC. Furthermore, a new simplified negative resistor-based model without altering the conventional RC model's structure is proposed. It is simple in structure with only three parameters, significantly reducing computational costs while maintaining accuracy.

Various fuel cell system solutions exist, they mainly differ depending on the desired fuel used. Hightemperature PEM (HTPEM) fuel cells offer the possibility of using liquid fuels such as methanol, due to the increased robustness of operating at higher temperatures (160-180oC). Using liquid fuels such as methanol removes the high volume demands of compressed hydrogen storages, simplifies refueling, and enables the use of existing fuel distribution systems. The liquid methanol is converted to a hydrogen rich gas with CO2 trace amounts of CO, the increased operating temperatures allow the fuel cell to tolerate much higher CO concentrations than Nafion-based membranes. The increased tolerance to CO also enables the use of reformer systems with less hydrogen cleaning steps and requirements for hydrogen purity, reducing the complexity of the reformer systems. Using hydrogen containing CO, affects the steady-state as well as dynamic electrical performance of the fuel cell, but stable operation is still possible with concentrations up to 3%. The typical polymer used in HTPEM fuel cells is polybenzimidazole (PBI), doped with phosphoric acid for proton conduction. The work will present a few different methanol reformer concepts, some experimental results of details related to reformer gas quality, control of burner temperature and the aspects of implementing advanced modeling based control approaches using the commercial Serenergy H3-350 methanol reformer system as an example.

Consequential life cycle assessment (CLCA) applied to systems under continuous evolution, such as cities, usually disregard interactions among local components, how policy decisions influence them, and the value of spatial data. As a result, local environmental impacts might not be well-considered. This paper investigates how a spatially explicit system dynamics (SD) modelling approach can overcome such limitation, contributing to the advancement of CLCA. First, a novel CLCA conceptual framework is presented combining consequential life cycle inventories, SD principles and the use of spatially explicit data. Second, its innovative value is demonstrated through a proof-of-concept SD-CLCA model. This model evaluates the environmental impacts of changes in electricity supply-demand in the market due to an increasing adoption of solar photovoltaic panels (SPV) in residential buildings. It allows traceability of both system changes and their environmental consequences. For demonstration purposes, the SD-CLCA model is applied to Lisbon municipality and the broader electricity market of Portugal. Results showcase how SD-CLCA models could provide a closer representation of the real effects of predicted changes in the electricity market due to different SPV adoption scenarios. They also illustrate that changes in gross domestic product, population and precipitation provide a diversified set of impact scores. As a methodological advancement, and to the net of a few shortcomings, the proposed SD-CLCA model is able to capture the complexity of cause-effect dynamics determining environmental impacts, which currently represents a research gap in LCA.

Still, the conventional linear economy model continues to dominate business, society, and research. While the concept of better connecting physical output and input flows at multiple production or consumption levels is becoming more accepted, it remains unclear how to make this happen while ensuring that sustainability targets are met or exceeded. Multiple scientific communities contribute different perspectives to this discourse, with promising opportunities for research. Circular economy and sustainability from business and economics perspectives are multifaceted. The existing body of knowledge needs to be advanced to assist private individuals, business managers, investors, or policymakers in making informed decisions. In this article for the inaugural issue, we provide a snapshot of the discourses among those who have studied the circular economy and its related topics. We outline conceptual inroads and potential research questions to encourage further circular economy and sustainability research and discourse from business or economics perspectives as well as from the broader transdisciplinary angle. We propose three research pathways: (1) connecting output with input needs in a global circular economy; (2) beyond today's business logic for a global circular economy; and (3) inclusion of the Global South in North-dominated circular economies. For each, we propose concepts, theories, or methodological approaches and offer various perspectives from the micro, macro, and meso levels.

HCI has equal potential to find solutions for environmental challenges and script, by design, the behavioral changes needed for sustainable net futures. We explore this dichotomy through the lens of data transmission, examining the energy consumption and environmental impact of web communications. This work begins with a critical revisiting of legacy web design that mines the past for actionable ideas towards sustainable net futures. We query how we can reduce our own net energy consumption, and plot a path to design our low-power website. In addition we speculate on a redesign of the background systems, outlining the practical steps we have taken towards solar, wind, gravity and micro-hydro low-power web hosting solutions.

HCI has equal potential to find solutions for environmental challenges and script, by design, the behavioral changes needed for sustainable net futures. We explore this dichotomy through the lens of data transmission, examining the energy consumption and environmental impact of web communications. This work begins with a critical revisiting of legacy web design that mines the past for actionable ideas towards sustainable net futures. We query how we can reduce our own net energy consumption, and plot a path to design our low-power website. In addition we speculate on a redesign of the background systems, outlining the practical steps we have taken towards solar, wind, gravity and micro-hydro low-power web hosting solutions.
