Abstract The sustainability of the built environment largely depends on its energy and environmental performances. The overall objective, across the different phases of the building life cycle, is to improve building and system performances in terms of economics, comfort, environmental impact and durability. Several modelling methodologies have been developed in order to evaluate the energy performance of buildings. Generally, every modelling methodology responds effectively to some specific tasks, but there exists a lack of integration in particular with respect to the cross-disciplinary role of data. Given the multi-scale and multi-objective nature of the problem of optimization of the energy and environmental performances of the built environment, an appropriate synthesis and integration process in modelling methodologies has to be identified, addressing realistically the uncertainties inherently present in modelling strategies. Visualization and data analysis techniques are successfully used in a wide variety of applications, both in theoretical and applied domains, but questions remains about their robustness, efficiency and applicability to the problems introduced before. The paper aims to analyze critically these topics by means of case studies, showing a possible path to create a multi-scale methodology able to synthesize all the relevant aspects.

The effects of lightning and impulse currents on the perturbations of the state of polarization (SOP) of optical beams transmitted on aerial cables are emulated in a laboratory environment. Submicrosecond-resolved measurements enable us to distinguish and quantify the magnetooptic contributions due to the discharge current. The maximum of Faraday-induced circular birefringence associated to natural strokes is estimated in /spl Delta/n/sub lr//spl ap/10/sup -7/ and may lead in a few microseconds to iterate swapping between orthogonal SOPs. The corresponding peak in relative phase delay, cumulated in transmission along a span, is evaluated as /spl Delta//spl tau//sub lr//spl ap/0.3 ps.

A novel reactor system is presented and investigated for the production of a hydrogen rich gas stream for power or ammonia production, based on pre-combustion chemical looping (PCCL) technology using dynamically operated packed bed reactors. In this process, the oxygen carrier (OC) is alternately oxidized with a gas mixture of air and steam to produce a H2/N2 product gas stream combining oxidation by air and water-splitting, and subsequently reduced with syngas producing a concentrated CO2 stream. The process is carried out at elevated pressure, but at intermediate temperature (in the range of 600-900 °C), which allows circumventing the extremely high temperatures required in chemical-looping combustion. In addition, the N2/H2 gas stream can be produced at the required composition for ammonia production, rendering this process also competitive with the conventional ammonia production. A preliminary experimental study has been carried out in a 2 kWth packed bed reactor using an iron-based oxygen carrier. The influence of the operating temperature and the initial solid composition during the oxidation cycle on the H2-rich gas yield has been investigated. The complete reduction to pure iron reduces the reactivity of the material due to sintering, whereas a controlled reduction to wüstite (FeO) allows to maintain a higher stability of the material, although the oxygen capacity is decreased.A preliminary thermodynamic assessment of the integrated PCCL plant for power production with natural gas has been carried out reaching an electrical efficiency of 49-51.5% (depending on the plant arrangement) with a carbon capture rate above 95%. The main parameter affecting the plant performance was found to be the steam requirement during the oxidation cycle. The comparison with benchmark technologies has confirmed the potential of the PCCL system.

The Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) have a key role to play in understanding which factors and policies would motivate, encourage and enable different actors to adopt a wide range of sustainable energy behaviours and support the required system changes and policies. The SSH can provide critical insights into how consumers could be empowered to consistently engage in sustainable energy behaviour, support and adopt new technologies, and support policies and changes in energy systems. Furthermore, they can increase our understanding of how organisations such as private and public institutions, and groups and associations of people can play a key role in the sustainable energy transition. We identify key questions to be addressed that have been identified by the Platform for Energy Research in the Socio-economic Nexus (PERSON, see person.eu), including SSH scholars who have been studying energy issues for many years. We identify three main research themes. The first research theme involves understanding which factors encourage different actors to engage in sustainable energy behaviour. The second research theme focuses on understanding which interventions can be effective in encouraging sustainable energy behaviour of different actors, and which factors enhance their effects. The third research theme concerns understanding which factors affect public and policy support for energy policy and changes in energy systems, and how important public concerns can best be addressed as to reduce or prevent resistance.

The opportunity to co-locate wind and wave energy exploitation is analyzed in the Italian seas grounding on the rationale that benefits are greater when un-correlated resources are combined. The study shows that, although waves and winds are generally strongly correlated, in some conditions their correlation is lower and the combined energy harvesting more interesting. As spatial conflicts of sea use and demand for maritime space are increasing, the development of the marine renewable energy sector needs to be evaluated in the perspective of the cumulative pressures deriving from present activities or expected from future developments. The evaluation of areas of potential conflicts among human activities, environmental vulnerabilities and marine renewable developments may facilitate the early development of mitigation actions and negotiations between stakeholders. In this study the opportunity of co-locating offshore wind turbines and wave energy converters is analyzed through a spatial planning approach. Both the potential for combining different renewable technologies, and the impact associated to such development was considered in the context of the existing pressures (e.g., naval traffic; mariculture activities; submarine cables routes; dredge spoils dumping; offshore activities; windfarms and ocean energy projects) and vulnerabilities (Marine Protected Areas, Key habitat presence) through quantitative indicators. The portion of Tyrrhenian coast south of Elba island, the northern-western Sardinian coast, and the southern Adriatic and Ionian coastal waters appear to be the most suitable sites. Moreover, the study presents a spatial quantitative methodology to identify sites of potential interest for the development of the marine renewable energy sector in the perspective of cost-effectiveness and environmental impact minimization.

Electrical energy storage (EES) such as lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries can reduce curtailment of renewables, maximizing renewable utilization by storing surplus electricity. Several techno-economic analyses have been performed on EES, but few have investigated the financial performance. This paper presents a state-of-the-art financial model obtaining novel and significative financial and economics results when applied to Li-ion EES. This work is a significant step forward since traditional analysis on EES are based on oversimplified and unrealistic economic models. A discounted cash flow model for the Li-ion EES is introduced and applied to examine the financial performance of three EES operating scenarios. Real-life solar irradiance, load, and retail electricity price data from Kenya are used to develop a set of case studies. The EES is coupled with photovoltaics and an anaerobic digestion biogas power plant. The results show the impact of capital cost: the Li-ion project is unprofitable in Kenya with a capital cost of 1500 $/kWh, but is profitable at 200 $/kWh. The study shows that the EES will generate a higher profit if it is cycled more frequently (hence a higher lifetime electricity output) although the lifetime is reduced due to degradation.

The reliability analysis of IESs (Integrated Energy Systems) is a complicated task because of the complex characteristics of different subsystems and the multi-scale dynamics that develop therein. To effectively address such problems, this paper proposes a systematic framework to analyse the reliability of energy supply in IESs, considering the dynamics of IESs and the inter-relationships among uncertainties. First, based on the linepack-based performance analysis model of IES, a quasi-steady-state model is established to model the dynamic behaviours in IESs, properly accounting for practical engineering and operational strategies. Then, considering the inter-correlations among different uncertainty sources and time-dependent relationships of each variable, a model that combines the statistical structure of copula with the machine learning method of stacked autoencoder (CSML) is adopted to establish the timely multivariate joint distributions for variables. Monte Carlo simulation combined with Order Statistics is used for assessing supply reliability. Case studies are performed on a realistic IES that combines an IEEE-15 power system with an 18-node natural gas pipeline network. The efficiency and accuracy of the quasi-steady-state model are validated. The reliability evaluation results show that the inter-correlations among variables and time-dependent relationships of each variable have great effects on the system reliability assessment. The consideration of linepack can significantly improve the supply reliability of IES whereas the management strategy of linepack may lead to some risky points. © 2022

Empirical research involving projects is an important and common way to advance knowledge in the energy sector, and there are well-established approaches for qualitative analysis of single or few cases (1–10 cases) as well as quantitative analysis of large databases (from 50+ cases). However, the “middle-ground” of analysing 10–50 cases is an unknown territory, and very few approaches exist to deal with numbers of cases that lie in the range of 10–50. This paper shows how this “middle-ground” can be explored through Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). This is a method that can be applied to energy infrastructure projects (such as construction, operations, and decommissioning of power plants) in order to study causal inference (e.g. factors associated with outcomes). This paper demonstrates the potential of QCA by showing its application on an energy infrastructure phenomenon with an intermediate number of cases, that of nuclear decommissioning projects. These projects are becoming increasingly important to society and have multibillion US dollar budgets. Moreover, their characteristics need to urgently be matched with their project performance in order to avoid even further cost overruns. The application of QCA to 24 European nuclear decommissioning projects shows that a combination of characteristics (such as a streamlined governance structure and the presence of a storage facility for radioactive material on site) might be contributing to lower cost overruns. This paper concludes by showing how QCA can be applied to other energy infrastructure phenomena with a similar intermediate number of cases.

Abstract The sustainability of the built environment largely depends on its energy and environmental performances. The overall objective, across the different phases of the building life cycle, is to improve building and system performances in terms of economics, comfort, environmental impact and durability. Several modelling methodologies have been developed in order to evaluate the energy performance of buildings. Generally, every modelling methodology responds effectively to some specific tasks, but there exists a lack of integration in particular with respect to the cross-disciplinary role of data. Given the multi-scale and multi-objective nature of the problem of optimization of the energy and environmental performances of the built environment, an appropriate synthesis and integration process in modelling methodologies has to be identified, addressing realistically the uncertainties inherently present in modelling strategies. Visualization and data analysis techniques are successfully used in a wide variety of applications, both in theoretical and applied domains, but questions remains about their robustness, efficiency and applicability to the problems introduced before. The paper aims to analyze critically these topics by means of case studies, showing a possible path to create a multi-scale methodology able to synthesize all the relevant aspects.

The effects of lightning and impulse currents on the perturbations of the state of polarization (SOP) of optical beams transmitted on aerial cables are emulated in a laboratory environment. Submicrosecond-resolved measurements enable us to distinguish and quantify the magnetooptic contributions due to the discharge current. The maximum of Faraday-induced circular birefringence associated to natural strokes is estimated in /spl Delta/n/sub lr//spl ap/10/sup -7/ and may lead in a few microseconds to iterate swapping between orthogonal SOPs. A novel reactor system is presented and investigated for the production of a hydrogen rich gas stream for power or ammonia production, based on pre-combustion chemical looping (PCCL) technology using dynamically operated packed bed reactors. In this process, the oxygen carrier (OC) is alternately oxidized with a gas mixture of air and steam to produce a H2/N2 product gas stream combining oxidation by air and water-splitting, and subsequently reduced with syngas producing a concentrated CO2 stream. The process is carried out at elevated pressure, but at intermediate temperature (in the range of 600-900 °C), which allows circumventing the extremely high temperatures required in chemical-looping combustion. In addition, the N2/H2 gas stream can be produced at the required composition for ammonia production, rendering this process also competitive with the conventional ammonia production. A preliminary experimental study has been carried out in a 2 kWth packed bed reactor using an iron-based oxygen carrier. The influence of the operating temperature and the initial solid composition during the oxidation cycle on the H2-rich gas yield has been investigated. The complete reduction to pure iron reduces the reactivity of the material due to sintering, whereas a controlled reduction to wüstite (FeO) allows to maintain a higher stability of the material, although the oxygen capacity is decreased.A preliminary thermodynamic assessment of the integrated PCCL plant for power production with natural gas has been carried out reaching an electrical efficiency of 49-51.5% (depending on the plant arrangement) with a carbon capture rate above 95%. The main parameter affecting the plant performance was found to be the steam requirement during the oxidation cycle. The comparison with benchmark technologies has confirmed the potential of the PCCL system.

The Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) have a key role to play in understanding which factors and policies would motivate, encourage and enable different actors to adopt a wide range of sustainable energy behaviours and support the required system changes and policies. The SSH can provide critical insights into how consumers could be empowered to consistently engage in sustainable energy behaviour, support and adopt new technologies, and support policies and changes in energy systems. Furthermore, they can increase our understanding of how organisations such as private and public institutions, and groups and associations of people can play a key role in the sustainable energy transition. We identify key questions to be addressed that have been identified by the Platform for Energy Research in the Socio-economic Nexus (PERSON, see person.eu), including SSH scholars who have been studying energy issues for many years. We identify three main research themes. The first research theme involves understanding which factors encourage different actors to engage in sustainable energy behaviour. The second research theme focuses on understanding which interventions can be effective in encouraging sustainable energy behaviour of different actors, and which factors enhance their effects. The third research theme concerns understanding which factors affect public and policy support for energy policy and changes in energy systems, and how important public concerns can best be addressed as to reduce or prevent resistance.

The opportunity to co-locate wind and wave energy exploitation is analyzed in the Italian seas grounding on the rationale that benefits are greater when un-correlated resources are combined. The study shows that, although waves and winds are generally strongly correlated, in some conditions their correlation is lower and the combined energy harvesting more interesting. As spatial conflicts of sea use and demand for maritime space are increasing, the development of the marine renewable energy sector needs to be evaluated in the perspective of the cumulative pressures deriving from present activities or expected from future developments. The evaluation of areas of potential conflicts among human activities, environmental vulnerabilities and marine renewable developments may facilitate the early development of mitigation actions and negotiations between stakeholders. In this study the opportunity of co-locating offshore wind turbines and wave energy converters is analyzed through a spatial planning approach. Both the potential for combining different renewable technologies, and the impact associated to such development was considered in the context of the existing pressures (e.g., naval traffic; mariculture activities; submarine cables routes; dredge spoils dumping; offshore activities; windfarms and ocean energy projects) and vulnerabilities (Marine Protected Areas, Key habitat presence) through quantitative indicators. The portion of Tyrrhenian coast south of Elba island, the northern-western Sardinian coast, and the southern Adriatic and Ionian coastal waters appear to be the most suitable sites. Moreover, the study presents a spatial quantitative methodology to identify sites of potential interest for the development of the marine renewable energy sector in the perspective of cost-effectiveness and environmental impact minimization.

Electrical energy storage (EES) such as lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries can reduce curtailment of renewables, maximizing renewable utilization by storing surplus electricity. Several techno-economic analyses have been performed on EES, but few have investigated the financial performance. This paper presents a state-of-the-art financial model obtaining novel and significative financial and economics results when applied to Li-ion EES. This work is a significant step forward since traditional analysis on EES are based on oversimplified and unrealistic economic models. A discounted cash flow model for the Li-ion EES is introduced and applied to examine the financial performance of three EES operating scenarios. Real-life solar irradiance, load, and retail electricity price data from Kenya are used to develop a set of case studies. The EES is coupled with photovoltaics and an anaerobic digestion biogas power plant. The results show the impact of capital cost: the Li-ion project is unprofitable in Kenya with a capital cost of 1500 $/kWh, but is profitable at 200 $/kWh. The study shows that the EES will generate a higher profit if it is cycled more frequently (hence a higher lifetime electricity output) although the lifetime is reduced due to degradation.

The reliability analysis of IESs (Integrated Energy Systems) is a complicated task because of the complex characteristics of different subsystems and the multi-scale dynamics that develop therein. To effectively address such problems, this paper proposes a systematic framework to analyse the reliability of energy supply in IESs, considering the dynamics of IESs and the inter-relationships among uncertainties. First, based on the linepack-based performance analysis model of IES, a quasi-steady-state model is established to model the dynamic behaviours in IESs, properly accounting for practical engineering and operational strategies. Then, considering the inter-correlations among different uncertainty sources and time-dependent relationships of each variable, a model that combines the statistical structure of copula with the machine learning method of stacked autoencoder (CSML) is adopted to establish the timely multivariate joint distributions for variables. Monte Carlo simulation combined with Order Statistics is used for assessing supply reliability. Case studies are performed on a realistic IES that combines an IEEE-15 power system with an 18-node natural gas pipeline network. The efficiency and accuracy of the quasi-steady-state model are validated. The reliability evaluation results show that the inter-correlations among variables and time-dependent relationships of each variable have great effects on the system reliability assessment. The consideration of linepack can significantly improve the supply reliability of IES whereas the management strategy of linepack may lead to some risky points. © 2022

Empirical research involving projects is an important and common way to advance knowledge in the energy sector, and there are well-established approaches for qualitative analysis of single or few cases (1–10 cases) as well as quantitative analysis of large databases (from 50+ cases). However, the “middle-ground” of analysing 10–50 cases is an unknown territory, and very few approaches exist to deal with numbers of cases that lie in the range of 10–50. This paper shows how this “middle-ground” can be explored through Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). This is a method that can be applied to energy infrastructure projects (such as construction, operations, and decommissioning of power plants) in order to study causal inference (e.g. factors associated with outcomes). This paper demonstrates the potential of QCA by showing its application on an energy infrastructure phenomenon with an intermediate number of cases, that of nuclear decommissioning projects. These projects are becoming increasingly important to society and have multibillion US dollar budgets. Moreover, their characteristics need to urgently be matched with their project performance in order to avoid even further cost overruns. The application of QCA to 24 European nuclear decommissioning projects shows that a combination of characteristics (such as a streamlined governance structure and the presence of a storage facility for radioactive material on site) might be contributing to lower cost overruns. This paper concludes by showing how QCA can be applied to other energy infrastructure phenomena with a similar intermediate number of cases.
