Mock;AbstractWe report a nickel complex for catalytic oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen under ambient conditions. Using the aryloxyl radical 2,4,6‐tri‐tert‐butylphenoxyl (tBu3ArO⋅) as a H atom acceptor to cleave the N−H bond of a coordinated NH3 ligand up to 56 equiv of N2 per Ni center can be generated. Employing the N‐oxyl radical 2,2,6,6‐(tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl)oxyl (TEMPO⋅) as the H‐atom acceptor, up to 15 equiv of N2 per Ni center are formed. A bridging Ni‐hydrazine product identified by isotopic nitrogen (15N) studies and supported by computational models indicates the N−N bond forming step occurs by bimetallic homocoupling of two paramagnetic [Ni]−NH2 fragments. Ni‐mediated hydrazine disproportionation to N2 and NH3 completes the catalytic cycle.

Bhagavathy; Malcolm McCulloch;This paper investigates the power loss minimization problem of solar DC nanogrids that are designed to provide energy access to households in off-grid areas. We consider nano-grids with distributed battery storage energy systems and that are enabled by multi-port DC-DC converters. As the nano-grids are not connected to the national grid and have batteries and converters distributed in each household, addressing the power loss problem while ensuring supply-demand balance is a challenge. To address the challenge, we propose a novel quasi-consensus based distributed control approach. The proposed approach consists of two algorithms namely, incremental loss consensus algorithm and voltage consensus algorithm. The incremental loss consensus algorithm is proposed to optimally schedule the battery charge/discharge operation while ensuring that supply-demand balance and the battery constraints are satisfied. The voltage consensus algorithm is proposed to determine optimal distribution voltage set points which act as optimal control signals. Both algorithms are implemented in a distributed manner, where minimal information exchange between households is required to obtain the optimal control actions. Simulation results of a solar DC nano-grid with five interconnected households verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach at addressing the nano-grid power loss problem.

Lately, the application of microwave (MW) irradiation for waste processing has been attracting interest globally. MW-assisted heating possesses several advantages such as the provision of high microwave energy into dielectric materials with deeper penetration for internal heat generation, showing beneficial features in improving the heating rate and reducing the reaction time. Consequently, the most recent literature regarding the applications of MW-assisted heating for biomass pretreatment as well as biofuel and bioenergy production was reviewed and consolidated in this study. An impressive increase in the product yield and improvement of the product properties are reported, with the use of MW-assisted heating in several conversion routes to produce biofuels. Despite being a promising technology for biofuel production, some major fundamental data of MW-assisted heating have not been comprehensively identified. Therefore, the feasibility of this technology for large-scale implementation is still subpar. Understanding the interaction between the feedstock and the microwave electromagnetic field, and the optimization of several operational and mechanical parameters are the two main keystones that would propel the industrialization of MW heating in the near future. This provides key insights leading to increased feasibility and more advanced application of MW heating.

This study evaluated, for the first time, vermifiltration as a post-treatment for the digestate from a low-tech digester implemented in a small-scale farm, treating cattle manure and cheese whey under psychrophilic conditions. Vermifiltration performance was monitored in terms of solids, organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens removal efficiency. In addition, the growth of earthworms (Eisenia foetida) and their role in the process was evaluated. Finally, the vermicompost and the effluent of the vermifilter were characterized in order to assess their potential reuse in agriculture. Vermifilters showed high removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (55-90%), total solids (60-80%), ammonium nitrogen (83-97%), and phosphate-P (28-49%). Earthworms effectively grew and reproduced on digestate (i.e. earthworms number increased by 183%), enhancing the vermifiltration performance, while reducing clogging and odour-related issues. Both the vermicompost and effluent produced complied with legislation limits established for soil improvers and wastewater for fertigation, respectively. Indeed, there was an absence of pathogens and non-detectable heavy metals concentrations. Vermifiltration may be thus considered a suitable post-treatment option for the digestate from low-tech digesters, allowing for its safe agricultural reuse and boosting the circular bioeconomy in small-scale farms.

Synopsis Classic debates in community ecology focused on the complexities of considering an ecosystem as a super-organ or organism. New consideration of such perspectives could clarify mechanisms underlying the dynamics of forest carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and water vapor loss, important for predicting and managing the future of Earth’s ecosystems and climate system. Here, we provide a rubric for considering ecosystem traits as aggregated, systemic, or emergent, i.e., representing the ecosystem as an aggregate of its individuals or as a metaphorical or literal super-organ or organism. We review recent approaches to scaling-up plant water relations (hydraulics) concepts developed for organs and organisms to enable and interpret measurements at ecosystem-level. We focus on three community-scale versions of water relations traits that have potential to provide mechanistic insight into climate change responses of forest CO2 and H2O gas exchange and productivity: leaf water potential (Ψcanopy), pressure volume curves (eco-PV), and hydraulic conductance (Keco). These analyses can reveal additional ecosystem-scale parameters analogous to those typically quantified for leaves or plants (e.g., wilting point and hydraulic vulnerability) that may act as thresholds in forest responses to drought, including growth cessation, mortality, and flammability. We unite these concepts in a novel framework to predict Ψcanopy and its approaching of critical thresholds during drought, using measurements of Keco and eco-PV curves. We thus delineate how the extension of water relations concepts from organ- and organism-scales can reveal the hydraulic constraints on the interaction of vegetation and climate and provide new mechanistic understanding and prediction of forest water use and productivity.

However, a major drawback most of them possess is their high energy consumption. Current solutions to this problem have significant l imitations: bringing back centralization and/or substituting the required energy with, e. g., storage space. This paper aims to address the problem by investigating the use of a two-level deep reinforcement learning (RL) model to design incentive policies for green mining in cryptocurrencies. This is done by modeling one such energy-intensive cryptocurrency system and creating an RL environment. Finally, by running simulations in an RL environment, we develop and test incentive policies, according to which cryptocurrency participants who primarily use renewable energy for their mining operations are more likely to add new blocks to the blockchain. Our results show that even when the green score of each crypto miner (determined by their use of green energy sources) has relatively small importance (up to 0.3) in their selection probability, miners still shift towards green mining in order to increase their chance of being picked to validate cryptocurrency transactions and receive the corresponding rewards.

Mock;AbstractWe report a nickel complex for catalytic oxidation of ammonia to dinitrogen under ambient conditions. Using the aryloxyl radical 2,4,6‐tri‐tert‐butylphenoxyl (tBu3ArO⋅) as a H atom acceptor to cleave the N−H bond of a coordinated NH3 ligand up to 56 equiv of N2 per Ni center can be generated. Employing the N‐oxyl radical 2,2,6,6‐(tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl)oxyl (TEMPO⋅) as the H‐atom acceptor, up to 15 equiv of N2 per Ni center are formed. A bridging Ni‐hydrazine product identified by isotopic nitrogen (15N) studies and supported by computational models indicates the N−N bond forming step occurs by bimetallic homocoupling of two paramagnetic [Ni]−NH2 fragments. Ni‐mediated hydrazine disproportionation to N2 and NH3 completes the catalytic cycle.

Bhagavathy; Malcolm McCulloch;This paper investigates the power loss minimization problem of solar DC nanogrids that are designed to provide energy access to households in off-grid areas. We consider nano-grids with distributed battery storage energy systems and that are enabled by multi-port DC-DC converters. As the nano-grids are not connected to the national grid and have batteries and converters distributed in each household, addressing the power loss problem while ensuring supply-demand balance is a challenge. To address the challenge, we propose a novel quasi-consensus based distributed control approach. The proposed approach consists of two algorithms namely, incremental loss consensus algorithm and voltage consensus algorithm. The incremental loss consensus algorithm is proposed to optimally schedule the battery charge/discharge operation while ensuring that supply-demand balance and the battery constraints are satisfied. The voltage consensus algorithm is proposed to determine optimal distribution voltage set points which act as optimal control signals. Both algorithms are implemented in a distributed manner, where minimal information exchange between households is required to obtain the optimal control actions. Simulation results of a solar DC nano-grid with five interconnected households verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach at addressing the nano-grid power loss problem.

Lately, the application of microwave (MW) irradiation for waste processing has been attracting interest globally. MW-assisted heating possesses several advantages such as the provision of high microwave energy into dielectric materials with deeper penetration for internal heat generation, showing beneficial features in improving the heating rate and reducing the reaction time. Consequently, the most recent literature regarding the applications of MW-assisted heating for biomass pretreatment as well as biofuel and bioenergy production was reviewed and consolidated in this study. An impressive increase in the product yield and improvement of the product properties are reported, with the use of MW-assisted heating in several conversion routes to produce biofuels. Despite being a promising technology for biofuel production, some major fundamental data of MW-assisted heating have not been comprehensively identified. Therefore, the feasibility of this technology for large-scale implementation is still subpar. Understanding the interaction between the feedstock and the microwave electromagnetic field, and the optimization of several operational and mechanical parameters are the two main keystones that would propel the industrialization of MW heating in the near future. This provides key insights leading to increased feasibility and more advanced application of MW heating.

This study evaluated, for the first time, vermifiltration as a post-treatment for the digestate from a low-tech digester implemented in a small-scale farm, treating cattle manure and cheese whey under psychrophilic conditions. Vermifiltration performance was monitored in terms of solids, organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens removal efficiency. In addition, the growth of earthworms (Eisenia foetida) and their role in the process was evaluated. Finally, the vermicompost and the effluent of the vermifilter were characterized in order to assess their potential reuse in agriculture. Vermifilters showed high removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (55-90%), total solids (60-80%), ammonium nitrogen (83-97%), and phosphate-P (28-49%). Earthworms effectively grew and reproduced on digestate (i.e. earthworms number increased by 183%), enhancing the vermifiltration performance, while reducing clogging and odour-related issues. Both the vermicompost and effluent produced complied with legislation limits established for soil improvers and wastewater for fertigation, respectively. Indeed, there was an absence of pathogens and non-detectable heavy metals concentrations. Vermifiltration may be thus considered a suitable post-treatment option for the digestate from low-tech digesters, allowing for its safe agricultural reuse and boosting the circular bioeconomy in small-scale farms.

Synopsis Classic debates in community ecology focused on the complexities of considering an ecosystem as a super-organ or organism. New consideration of such perspectives could clarify mechanisms underlying the dynamics of forest carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and water vapor loss, important for predicting and managing the future of Earth’s ecosystems and climate system. Here, we provide a rubric for considering ecosystem traits as aggregated, systemic, or emergent, i.e., representing the ecosystem as an aggregate of its individuals or as a metaphorical or literal super-organ or organism. We review recent approaches to scaling-up plant water relations (hydraulics) concepts developed for organs and organisms to enable and interpret measurements at ecosystem-level. We focus on three community-scale versions of water relations traits that have potential to provide mechanistic insight into climate change responses of forest CO2 and H2O gas exchange and productivity: leaf water potential (Ψcanopy), pressure volume curves (eco-PV), and hydraulic conductance (Keco). These analyses can reveal additional ecosystem-scale parameters analogous to those typically quantified for leaves or plants (e.g., wilting point and hydraulic vulnerability) that may act as thresholds in forest responses to drought, including growth cessation, mortality, and flammability. We unite these concepts in a novel framework to predict Ψcanopy and its approaching of critical thresholds during drought, using measurements of Keco and eco-PV curves. We thus delineate how the extension of water relations concepts from organ- and organism-scales can reveal the hydraulic constraints on the interaction of vegetation and climate and provide new mechanistic understanding and prediction of forest water use and productivity.

However, a major drawback most of them possess is their high energy consumption. Current solutions to this problem have significant l imitations: bringing back centralization and/or substituting the required energy with, e. g., storage space. This paper aims to address the problem by investigating the use of a two-level deep reinforcement learning (RL) model to design incentive policies for green mining in cryptocurrencies. This is done by modeling one such energy-intensive cryptocurrency system and creating an RL environment. Finally, by running simulations in an RL environment, we develop and test incentive policies, according to which cryptocurrency participants who primarily use renewable energy for their mining operations are more likely to add new blocks to the blockchain. Our results show that even when the green score of each crypto miner (determined by their use of green energy sources) has relatively small importance (up to 0.3) in their selection probability, miners still shift towards green mining in order to increase their chance of being picked to validate cryptocurrency transactions and receive the corresponding rewards.
