description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2019 SpainPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Lamnatou, Chrysovalantou; Smyth, M.; Chemisana Villegas, Daniel;Building-Integrated Photovoltaic/Thermal (BIPVT) technology offers multiple advantages; however, these types of installations include materials such as Photovoltaic (PV) cells and metals which considerably influence BIPVT environmental impact. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate BIPVT environmental profile, for instance by means of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). In light of the issues mentioned above, the present article is an LCA study that assesses the environmental performance of a BIPVT prototype that has been developed and patented at the Ulster University (Belfast, UK). The investigation places emphasis on material manufacturing, based on Cumulative Energy Demand (CED), Global Warming Potential (GWP), ReCiPe, Ecological footprint and USEtox. The results show that according to all the adopted methods/environmental indicators and based on primary materials, the PV cells and the two vessels (steel) are the components with the three highest impacts. Scenarios which include recycling of steel, plastics and brass (landfill for the other materials has been assumed), based on CED, GWP 100a and ReCiPe endpoint, have been examined. It was found that steel recycling offers a considerable impact reduction, ranging from 47% to 85%. Furthermore, the impact of the proposed BIPVT module per m2 of thermal absorber has been calculated. The results, based on primary materials, show 4.92 GJprim/m2 and 0.34 t CO2.eq/m2 (GWP 100a). In addition, according to USEtox/ecotoxicity, USEtox/human toxicity-non-cancer (scenario based on primary materials), the PV cells present the highest contributions to the total impact of the module: 55% in terms of ecotoxicity and 86% concerning human toxicity/non-cancer. A comparison with literature is provided. Moreover, a separate section of the article is about factors which influence BIPVT environmental profile, discussing parameters such as the storage materials and the end-of-life management.

The neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF features a white neutron source produced by spallation through 20GeV/c protons impinging on a lead target. The facility, aiming primarily at the measurement of neutron-induced reaction cross sections, was operating at CERN between 2001 and 2004, and then underwent a major upgrade in 2008. This paper presents in detail all the characteristics of the new neutron beam in the currently available configurations, which correspond to two different collimation systems and two choices of neutron moderator. The characteristics discussed include the intensity and energy dependence of the neutron flux, the spatial profile of the beam, the in-beam background components and the energy resolution/broadening. The discussion of these features is based on dedicated measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, and includes estimations of the systematic uncertainties of the mentioned quantities.

Spurious regression analysis in panel data when the time series are cross section dependent is analysed in the article. We show that consistent estimation of the long‐run average parameter is possible once we control for cross section dependence using cross section averages in the spirit of the common correlated effects approach proposed by Pesaran. This result is used to design a panel cointegration test statistic accounting for cross section dependence. The performance of the proposal is investigated in comparison with factor‐based methods to control for cross section dependence when strong, semi‐weak and weak cross section dependence may be present.

In this paper, an algorithm for energy management system (EMS) based on multi-layer ant colony optimization (EMS-MACO) is presented to find energy scheduling in Microgrid (MG). The aim of study is to figure out the optimum operation of micro-sources for decreasing the electricity production cost by hourly day-ahead and real time scheduling. The proposed algorithm is based on ant colony optimization (ACO) method and is able to analyze the technical and economic time dependent constraints. This algorithm attempts to meet the required load demand with minimum energy cost in a local energy market (LEM) structure. Performance of MACO is compared with modified conventional EMS (MCEMS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) based EMS. Analysis of obtained results demonstrates that the system performance is improved also the energy cost is reduced about 20% and 5% by applying MACO in comparison with MCEMS and PSO, respectively. Furthermore, the plug and play capability in real time applications is investigated by using different scenarios and the system adequate performance is validated experimentally too. Resonance instabilities in power systems can be assessed with the positive-net-damping stability criterion. This criterion is a review of the complex torque coefficients method, but it does not provide the frequency of the closed-loop oscillatory modes. This paper presents an alternative approach of the positive-net-damping stability criterion to analyze electrical resonance instability. In this approach, resonance instabilities are identified in feedback systems derived from impedance-based equivalent circuits. The proposed approach is used to characterize the frequency of closed-loop oscillatory modes and identify the physical and control parameters of the system that increase or reduce the damping of these modes. The extension of the proposed approach to study the stability of single-input single-output and multiple-input multiple-output feedback systems is analyzed, and the approach is also compared with other stability methods in the literature. An example of an offshore wind power plant illustrates the theoretical study and compares the proposed approach with different methods to evaluate stability. Time-domain simulations in Power System Computer Aided Design/Electro Magnetic Transient Design and Control (PSCAD/EMTDC) are shown to validate the stability study.

Buildings subject to Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs) are usually quite complex public buildings, sometimes relatively old and usually barely documented from the technical standpoint. Gathering comprehensive and reliable technical information is a time consuming and expensive process that has to be carried out within the submission deadline. In these conditions, the standard approach to energy performance forecasting which uses detailed simulation is practically unfeasible. This paper proposes a reduced-order modeling approach that is tailored to the EPC tendering phase. The proposed methodology extends a third order building model, introducing explicit, albeit still abstract, representations of the heating/cooling system, of the weather influence and of the end-user gains. The extended parameter set reflects to a large degree the information that is readily available in practical on-site surveying, or that can be easily calculated from that information. As a consequence of the simplified physics, a knowledge driven, practical calibration procedure, which provides an effective way of reducing uncertainty, is proposed. The calibration procedure analyses the uncertainty present in the available knowledge and uses the constraints imposed by the implemented physics on the parameters’ dynamic to assess their value estimation. The modeling approach is exemplified through three case studies: the first one provides the comparison of the reduced-order model predictions with the outcomes of a detailed model of a small hospital, the second one is used to compare the reduced-order model predictions with the detailed measurements of energy consumption of a real building, and the third case study exemplifies the use in operational context with scarce information. AbstractThe European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO) European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) provides power, communications, sensors, and data infrastructure for continuous, high-resolution, (near-)real-time, interactive ocean observations across a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary range of research areas including biology, geology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer science, from polar to subtropical environments, through the water column down to the abyss. Eleven deep-sea and four shallow nodes span from the Arctic through the Atlantic and Mediterranean, to the Black Sea. Coordination among the consortium nodes is being strengthened through the EMSOdev project (H2020), which will produce the EMSO Generic Instrument Module (EGIM). Early installations are now being upgraded, for example, at the Ligurian, Ionian, Azores, and Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) nodes. Significant findings have been flowing in over the years; for example, high-frequency surface and subsurface water-column measurements of the PAP node show an increase in seawater pCO2 (from 339 μatm in 2003 to 353 μatm in 2011) with little variability in the mean air-sea CO2 flux. In the Central Eastern Atlantic, the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands open-ocean canary node (aka ESTOC station) has a long-standing time series on water column physical, biogeochemical, and acidification processes that have contributed to the assessment efforts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). EMSO not only brings together countries and disciplines but also allows the pooling of resources and coordination to assemble harmonized data into a comprehensive regional ocean picture, which will then be made available to researchers and stakeholders worldwide on an open and interoperable access basis.

We consider a model for the contact melting of a block of phase change material on a flat, heated surface. The block and melt have linear temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and viscosity. The model consists of heat equations for the solid and liquid temperatures, the Navier–Stokes equations in the liquid melt layer, a Stefan condition at the solid–liquid interface and a force balance between the weight of the solid and the countering pressure in the liquid. The heat balance integral method is used to obtain an approximate solution for the solid temperature. We demonstrate that in the case of n-octadecane the inclusion of temperature-dependent effects slows down the melting process. Finally, we vary the parameters in the linear expressions for the conductivities and viscosities to understand the behaviour of the system. © 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS

For hybrid photovoltaic-thermal collectors to become competitive with other types of solar energy converters, they must offer high performance at fluid outlet temperatures above 60¿°C, as is required for space heating and domestic hot water provision, which together account for nearly 50% of heat demand. A roadmap is presented of the technological advances required to achieve this goal. Strategies for reducing convective, radiative and electrical losses at elevated temperature are discussed, and an experimental characterisation of a novel transparent low-emissivity coating for photovoltaic solar cells is presented. An experimentally-validated simulation formalism is used to project the performance of different combinations of loss-reduction strategies implemented together. Finally, a techno-economic analysis is performed to predict the price points at which the hybrid technologies along the roadmap become competitive with non-hybrid photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies. The most advanced hybrid technology along the roadmap employs an evacuated cavity, a transparent low-emissivity coating, and silicon heterojunction photovoltaic cells Peer Reviewed

In the framework of the nodalization qualification process and quality guarantee procedures and following the guidelines of Kv-scaled analysis and UMAE methodology, further development has been performed by UPC team resulting in a scaling-up methodology. Such methodology has been applied in this paper for analyzing discrepancies that appear between the simulations of two counterpart tests. It allows the analysis of scaling-down criterion used for the design of an ITF and also the investigation of the differences of configuration between an ITF and a particular NPP. For analyzing both, it applies two concepts “scaled-up nodalizations” and “hybrid nodalizations.” The result of this activity is the explanation of appeared distortions and its final goal is to qualify nodalizations for their use in the analysis of equivalent scenarios at an NPP scale. In this sense, the experimental data obtained in the OECD/NEA PKL-2 and ROSA-2 projects as counterpart test are of a great value for the testing of the present methodology. The results of the posttest calculations of LSTF-PKL counterpart tests have allowed the analyst to define which phenomena could be well reproduced by their nodalizations and which not, in this way establishing the basis for a future extrapolation to an NPP scaled calculation. The application of the UPC scaling up methodology has demonstrated that selected phenomena can be scaled-up and explained between counterpart simulations by carefully considering the differences in scale and design.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Journal 2019 SpainPublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Lamnatou, Chrysovalantou; Smyth, M.; Chemisana Villegas, Daniel;Building-Integrated Photovoltaic/Thermal (BIPVT) technology offers multiple advantages; however, these types of installations include materials such as Photovoltaic (PV) cells and metals which considerably influence BIPVT environmental impact.
