Active Magnetic Regeneration (AMR) is a configuration that allows magnetic refrigeration to be suitable also for room temperature applications. This work is intended to detect, by means of a 1-D numerical model, the influence on the regenerator performances of the working condition ambient temperature (T(CURIE) +/- 20 K) and of the operating parameters fluid mass flow rate (utilization factor 0.5 divided by 3.5) and cycle frequency (0.1 divided by 0.6 Hz). Simulations show that, tuning the fluid mass flow rate, a gadolinium AMR (395 g, f = 0.25 Hz, Delta B = 1.7 T) can reach a maximum cooling capacity of 130 W and a 40 W cooling power over a temperature span of 30 K. A COP of 5 can also be achieved with a temperature span of 30 K and a cooling power of 35 W. Frequency has a weak influence on the AMR's COP, while the ambient temperature is crucial. The system loses the 60% of cooling capacity if the ambient temperature is 20 K away from the material Curie temperature.

AbstractWe describe the rational design of a new versatile family of bifunctional catalytic materials based on the combination of supported metal nanoparticles (Pd, Rh, Ru) and the superacid, perfluorinated Aquivion® PFSA polymer. The heterogeneous catalysts were tested in the multi‐step valorisation of representative plant derivatives to high‐added‐value chemicals. Particularly, the conversion of (+)‐citronellal to (‐)‐menthol and levulinic acid to γ‐valerolactone was achieved in one pot and in one stage in the water phase and shows full selectivity at a high conversion level under mild reaction conditions. The results are discussed in terms of the catalyst micro‐structure.

The experiment determined the technical and financial efficiency of five storage techniques, specifically designed for SRF poplar chips stored at the farm site in small (20 m3) piles. The treatments on test were: uncovered storage, storage under a temporary roof structure, cover under a semi-permeable fleece sheet, cover under two types of plastic sheet (i.e. white and black). Each treatment was replicated 3 times. Researchers monitored temperature and moisture content trends inside the piles, and determined dry matter losses at the end of the 170 days storage period. In general, piles under plastic cover presented opposite trends compared to all other piles. They acquired moisture rather than losing it, and showed gradual temperature trends instead of a typical peak-and-drop behaviour. Dry matter losses varied from 5.1% to 9.8%, and were highest for the uncovered treatment, and lowest for the plastic cover treatment. Under the conditions of north-western Italy, uncovered storage was a cost-effective option. Protecting the piles with some cover incurred more cost than it saved, resulting in a higher storage cost per unit energy. Although more expensive, sheltering the piles under a simple roof structure offered the benefit of a higher reduction of moisture content, which may turn the chips into a higher quality fuel. Of course, these results were closely related to the Southern European climate, and the specific year of the test. Occasional wetter years may overturn these results. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Shipping is one of the most efficient transportation modes for moving freight globally. International regulations concerning decarbonization and emission reduction goals drive rapid innovations to meet the 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas reduction targets. The internal combustion engines used for marine vessels are among the most efficient energy conversion systems. Internal combustion engines dominate the propulsion system architectures for marine shipping, and current marine engines will continue to serve for several decades. However, to meet the aggressive goals of low-carbon-intensity shipping, there is an impetus for further efficiency improvement and achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions. These factors drive the advancements in engine technologies, low-carbon fuels and fueling infrastructure, and emissions control systems. This editorial presents a perspective on the future of ship engines and the role of low-life cycle-carbon-fuels in decarbonizing the marine shipping sector. A selection of zero-carbon, net-zero carbon, and low-lifecycle-carbon-fuels are reviewed. This work focuses on the opportunities and challenges of displacing distillate fossil fuels for decarbonizing marine shipping. Enabling technologies such as next-generation air handling, fuel injection systems, and advanced combustion modes are discussed in the context of their role in the future of low-CO2 intensity shipping.

We conducted a comparative study of chipping logging residues at the roadside landing or at the yarder pad, the latter inaccessible to heavy road vehicles. Field data was collected from real operations in the Italian mountain, and it was used for building a simulation model that could generalize the results of the study. The model was built with Arena 14 and carefully reflected interaction delays between individual units along the chain. Chipping at the pad with a chipper and two shuttles was the best compromise solution of low supply cost and fuel consumption. At a mean cost of Euro22.7 per fresh tonne, this solution was 10% cheaper than chipping at the landing. Using three chip shuttles did not allow a meaningful reduction of supply cost over a two-shuttle chain, but resulted in a 7% increase of fuel consumption. The distance between the pad and the roadside landing was by far the most important factor in determining supply cost, and accounted for 80% of the variability in the data, for both systems. Under these circumstances, the higher speed and payload of the chip shuttles made it preferable to chip at the pad, provided enough shuttles are available.

Since the 1990s, Common Cranes migrating in autumn through Italy have increased significantly both in number and in flock size. In the present study we provided a countrywide profile of autumn crane migration across Italy between 2001 and 2007 (486 records). To investigate the association of climatic characteristics with temporal and spatial migration patterns, we used weather data and climate anomalies over 60 years (1948-2007; NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Project database). Autumn migration showed different phenological patterns along two main migratory routes: 1) a Southern Italy route and 2) a Northern Italy route. The Southern route, across the lower Adriatic Sea was only partially described before, and more inferred than documented, whereas the Northern route, across the Po River plain, resulted as a new flyway, never described before. Crane migrations along the Northern route occurred 7 to 14 days earlier than along the Southern one. Along both routes, we detected mass migration events concurring with particular weather conditions: the use of Southern route was associated with southward winds in the Balkans, the records along Northern route with high pressure and favourable westward winds in Central Europe and in the main stop-over site (Hortobagy) of likely origin. In the last 60 years, the occurrence of the latter weather configurations has slightly, but consistently, increased, suggesting that the Northern route may have recently established as an alternative route for the cranes migrating from Eastern Europe, joining the two traditional continental routes (the West-European, and the Baltic-Hungarian).

Vineyards cover about eight millions of hectares worldwide and their annual pruning generates a large amount of ligno-cellulosic biomass, potentially available for industrial and energy use. Commercial pruning residue harvesters are now available, which may allow cost-effective recovery. The study aimed at determining the quantity and the quality of pruning residues potentially derived from vineyard management. Data were obtained from 17 fields in Northern and Central Italy. Fields were harvested with seven different machines. The experimental design adapted to the necessities of field trials, but was adequate for testing the main sources of variability. Net residue yield varies around 1 oven dry tonne per hectare, with minor differences between grape varietals and harvesting technologies. Losses are still high, and are generally related to ineffective management techniques. Moisture content at harvest varies between 40% and 45%, whereas the higher heating value is slightly lower than that of forest fuels. Comminuted vineyard residues are unsuitable for firing residential boilers, due to the frequent presence of oversize and/or undersize particles. The application of pesticides does not result in any significant contamination with noxious chemicals, because these products are almost completely weathered before residues are recovered. In wine-producing regions, the recovery of vineyard pruning residue may represent a substantial source of industrial bio-fuel. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Long term semi continuous experiments were carried out, both with sole FW and with Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) as a co-substrate, at varying operational conditions (0.8-2.2 g VS L-1 d-1) and FW / WAS ratios. Acidification was observed along FW mono-digestion, making it necessary to buffer the digesters; ADM1 modelling and experimental results suggested that this phenomenon was due to the methanogenic activity decline, most likely related to a deficiency in trace elements. WAS addition, even at proportions as low as 10% of the organic load, settled the acidification issue; this ability was related to the promotion of the methanogenic activity and the consequent enhancement of acetate consumption, rather than to WAS buffering capacity. The ability of the ADM1 to model processes affected by low microbial activity, such as FW mono-digestion, was also assessed. It was observed that the ADM1 was only adequate for digestions with a high activity level for both bacteria and methanogens (FISH/CARD-FISH ratio preferably >0.8) and, under these conditions, the model was able to correctly predict the relative abundance of both microbial populations, extrapolated from FISH analysis.

In this paper we present a mathematical model for studying ecosystem engineering by woody plant species in drylands. The model captures various feedbacks between biomass and water including water uptake by plants' roots and increased water infiltration at vegetation patches. Both the uptake and the infiltration feedbacks act as mechanisms for vegetation pattern formation, but have opposite effects on the water resource; the former depletes the soil-water content under a vegetation patch, whereas the latter acts to increase it. Varying the relative strength of the two feedbacks we find a trade-off between the engineering capacity of a plant species and its resilience to disturbances. We further identify two basic soil-water distributions associated with engineering at the single patch level, hump-shaped and ring-shaped, and discuss the niches they form for herbaceous species. Finally, we study how pattern transitions at the landscape level feedback to the single patch level by affecting engineering strength.

In this work we combine charge-pumping measurements with positive constant voltage stress to investigate trap generation in SiO2/ Al2O3 n-MOSFET. Trap density has been scanned either in energy or in position based on charge-pumping (CP) measurements performed under different operating conditions in terms of amplitude and frequency of the gate pulse. Our results have revealed that the traps are meanly localized shallow in energy level, deeper in spatial position and they are mostly generated near the Si/SiO2 interface. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Active Magnetic Regeneration (AMR) is a configuration that allows magnetic refrigeration to be suitable also for room temperature applications. This work is intended to detect, by means of a 1-D numerical model, the influence on the regenerator performances of the working condition ambient temperature (T(CURIE) +/- 20 K) and of the operating parameters fluid mass flow rate (utilization factor 0.5 divided by 3.5) and cycle frequency (0.1 divided by 0.6 Hz). Simulations show that, tuning the fluid mass flow rate, a gadolinium AMR (395 g, f = 0.25 Hz, Delta B = 1.7 T) can reach a maximum cooling capacity of 130 W and a 40 W cooling power over a temperature span of 30 K. A COP of 5 can also be achieved with a temperature span of 30 K and a cooling power of 35 W. Frequency has a weak influence on the AMR's COP, while the ambient temperature is crucial. The system loses the 60% of cooling capacity if the ambient temperature is 20 K away from the material Curie temperature.

AbstractWe describe the rational design of a new versatile family of bifunctional catalytic materials based on the combination of supported metal nanoparticles (Pd, Rh, Ru) and the superacid, perfluorinated Aquivion® PFSA polymer. The heterogeneous catalysts were tested in the multi‐step valorisation of representative plant derivatives to high‐added‐value chemicals. Particularly, the conversion of (+)‐citronellal to (‐)‐menthol and levulinic acid to γ‐valerolactone was achieved in one pot and in one stage in the water phase and shows full selectivity at a high conversion level under mild reaction conditions. The results are discussed in terms of the catalyst micro‐structure.

The experiment determined the technical and financial efficiency of five storage techniques, specifically designed for SRF poplar chips stored at the farm site in small (20 m3) piles. The treatments on test were: uncovered storage, storage under a temporary roof structure, cover under a semi-permeable fleece sheet, cover under two types of plastic sheet (i.e. white and black). Each treatment was replicated 3 times. Researchers monitored temperature and moisture content trends inside the piles, and determined dry matter losses at the end of the 170 days storage period. In general, piles under plastic cover presented opposite trends compared to all other piles. They acquired moisture rather than losing it, and showed gradual temperature trends instead of a typical peak-and-drop behaviour. Dry matter losses varied from 5.1% to 9.8%, and were highest for the uncovered treatment, and lowest for the plastic cover treatment. Under the conditions of north-western Italy, uncovered storage was a cost-effective option. Protecting the piles with some cover incurred more cost than it saved, resulting in a higher storage cost per unit energy. Although more expensive, sheltering the piles under a simple roof structure offered the benefit of a higher reduction of moisture content, which may turn the chips into a higher quality fuel. Of course, these results were closely related to the Southern European climate, and the specific year of the test. Occasional wetter years may overturn these results. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Shipping is one of the most efficient transportation modes for moving freight globally. International regulations concerning decarbonization and emission reduction goals drive rapid innovations to meet the 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas reduction targets. The internal combustion engines used for marine vessels are among the most efficient energy conversion systems. Internal combustion engines dominate the propulsion system architectures for marine shipping, and current marine engines will continue to serve for several decades. However, to meet the aggressive goals of low-carbon-intensity shipping, there is an impetus for further efficiency improvement and achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions. These factors drive the advancements in engine technologies, low-carbon fuels and fueling infrastructure, and emissions control systems. This editorial presents a perspective on the future of ship engines and the role of low-life cycle-carbon-fuels in decarbonizing the marine shipping sector. A selection of zero-carbon, net-zero carbon, and low-lifecycle-carbon-fuels are reviewed. This work focuses on the opportunities and challenges of displacing distillate fossil fuels for decarbonizing marine shipping. Enabling technologies such as next-generation air handling, fuel injection systems, and advanced combustion modes are discussed in the context of their role in the future of low-CO2 intensity shipping.

We conducted a comparative study of chipping logging residues at the roadside landing or at the yarder pad, the latter inaccessible to heavy road vehicles. Field data was collected from real operations in the Italian mountain, and it was used for building a simulation model that could generalize the results of the study. The model was built with Arena 14 and carefully reflected interaction delays between individual units along the chain. Chipping at the pad with a chipper and two shuttles was the best compromise solution of low supply cost and fuel consumption. At a mean cost of Euro22.7 per fresh tonne, this solution was 10% cheaper than chipping at the landing. Using three chip shuttles did not allow a meaningful reduction of supply cost over a two-shuttle chain, but resulted in a 7% increase of fuel consumption. The distance between the pad and the roadside landing was by far the most important factor in determining supply cost, and accounted for 80% of the variability in the data, for both systems. Under these circumstances, the higher speed and payload of the chip shuttles made it preferable to chip at the pad, provided enough shuttles are available.

Since the 1990s, Common Cranes migrating in autumn through Italy have increased significantly both in number and in flock size. In the present study we provided a countrywide profile of autumn crane migration across Italy between 2001 and 2007 (486 records). To investigate the association of climatic characteristics with temporal and spatial migration patterns, we used weather data and climate anomalies over 60 years (1948-2007; NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Project database). Autumn migration showed different phenological patterns along two main migratory routes: 1) a Southern Italy route and 2) a Northern Italy route. The Southern route, across the lower Adriatic Sea was only partially described before, and more inferred than documented, whereas the Northern route, across the Po River plain, resulted as a new flyway, never described before. Crane migrations along the Northern route occurred 7 to 14 days earlier than along the Southern one. Along both routes, we detected mass migration events concurring with particular weather conditions: the use of Southern route was associated with southward winds in the Balkans, the records along Northern route with high pressure and favourable westward winds in Central Europe and in the main stop-over site (Hortobagy) of likely origin. In the last 60 years, the occurrence of the latter weather configurations has slightly, but consistently, increased, suggesting that the Northern route may have recently established as an alternative route for the cranes migrating from Eastern Europe, joining the two traditional continental routes (the West-European, and the Baltic-Hungarian).

Vineyards cover about eight millions of hectares worldwide and their annual pruning generates a large amount of ligno-cellulosic biomass, potentially available for industrial and energy use. Commercial pruning residue harvesters are now available, which may allow cost-effective recovery. The study aimed at determining the quantity and the quality of pruning residues potentially derived from vineyard management. Data were obtained from 17 fields in Northern and Central Italy. Fields were harvested with seven different machines. The experimental design adapted to the necessities of field trials, but was adequate for testing the main sources of variability. Net residue yield varies around 1 oven dry tonne per hectare, with minor differences between grape varietals and harvesting technologies. Losses are still high, and are generally related to ineffective management techniques. Moisture content at harvest varies between 40% and 45%, whereas the higher heating value is slightly lower than that of forest fuels. Comminuted vineyard residues are unsuitable for firing residential boilers, due to the frequent presence of oversize and/or undersize particles. The application of pesticides does not result in any significant contamination with noxious chemicals, because these products are almost completely weathered before residues are recovered. In wine-producing regions, the recovery of vineyard pruning residue may represent a substantial source of industrial bio-fuel. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Long term semi continuous experiments were carried out, both with sole FW and with Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) as a co-substrate, at varying operational conditions (0.8-2.2 g VS L-1 d-1) and FW / WAS ratios. Acidification was observed along FW mono-digestion, making it necessary to buffer the digesters; ADM1 modelling and experimental results suggested that this phenomenon was due to the methanogenic activity decline, most likely related to a deficiency in trace elements. WAS addition, even at proportions as low as 10% of the organic load, settled the acidification issue; this ability was related to the promotion of the methanogenic activity and the consequent enhancement of acetate consumption, rather than to WAS buffering capacity. The ability of the ADM1 to model processes affected by low microbial activity, such as FW mono-digestion, was also assessed. It was observed that the ADM1 was only adequate for digestions with a high activity level for both bacteria and methanogens (FISH/CARD-FISH ratio preferably >0.8) and, under these conditions, the model was able to correctly predict the relative abundance of both microbial populations, extrapolated from FISH analysis.

Shrubs are excellent examples; they self-organize to form patterns of mesic patches which provide habitats for herbaceous species. In this paper we present a mathematical model for studying ecosystem engineering by woody plant species in drylands. The model captures various feedbacks between biomass and water including water uptake by plants' roots and increased water infiltration at vegetation patches. Both the uptake and the infiltration feedbacks act as mechanisms for vegetation pattern formation, but have opposite effects on the water resource; the former depletes the soil-water content under a vegetation patch, whereas the latter acts to increase it. Varying the relative strength of the two feedbacks we find a trade-off between the engineering capacity of a plant species and its resilience to disturbances. We further identify two basic soil-water distributions associated with engineering at the single patch level, hump-shaped and ring-shaped, and discuss the niches they form for herbaceous species. Finally, we study how pattern transitions at the landscape level feedback to the single patch level by affecting engineering strength.

In this work we combine charge-pumping measurements with positive constant voltage stress to investigate trap generation in SiO2/ Al2O3 n-MOSFET. Trap density has been scanned either in energy or in position based on charge-pumping (CP) measurements performed under different operating conditions in terms of amplitude and frequency of the gate pulse. Our results have revealed that the traps are meanly localized shallow in energy level, deeper in spatial position and they are mostly generated near the Si/SiO2 interface. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
