Artículos en revistas Hybrid microgrids are expected to play an important role in the expansion of access to electricity in developing countries. While most of these systems are operated with dispatch strategies which do not make use of predictions about the load or about the availability of renewable energy resources, forecast-based strategies have recently gained attention as an alternative to bring down operation costs. In this work, we develop a framework to assess this potential under a range of assumptions about the quality of load and photovoltaic generation forecasts. The application of the methodology to a village of 600 households reveals cost savings ranging between 2% and 7% depending on the forecast quality and the composition of the microgrid. We also show that sizing microgrid components under the assumption of a predictive operation strategy results in a design with a higher share of intermittent generation. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

An experimental research was managed in the framework of the PASSAM European Project to measure the efficiency of high-pressure sprays in capturing aerosols when applied to a filtered containment venting system in case of severe accident. The campaign was carried out in a purposely built facility composed by a scrubbing chamber 0.5 × 1.0 m and 1.5 m high, with transparent walls to permit the complete view of the aerosol removal process, where the aerosol was injected to form a cloud of specific particle concentration. The chamber was equipped with a high pressure water spray system with a single nozzle placed on its top. The test matrix consisted in the combination of water pressure injections, in the range 50-130 bar, on a cloud of monodispersed SiO2 particles with sizes 0.5 or 1.0 ?m and initial concentration ranging between 2 and 99 mg/m3. The spray was kept running for 2 min and the efficiency of the removal was evaluated, along the test time, using an optical particle sizer. With respect to low-pressure sprays, the removal efficiency turned out much more significant: the half-life for 1 ?m particles with a removal high-pressure spray system is orders of magnitude shorter than that with a low-pressure spray system. The highest removal rate was detected with 1 ?m particles at the highest water injection pressure, mainly because of the high concentration of droplets with high velocity, while lower removal was measured for 0.5 ?m particles. No influence of the initial aerosol concentration was observed for both particle sizes.

Manufacturing processes have a high impact on global energy consumption. Machine tool's environmental impact is typically dominated by the energy absorbed during the use phase. Energy efficiency is progressively considered as an additional performance index in comparing alternative machines, process planning, and machining strategies. For this purpose, this paper proposes a simulation approach that estimates the energy used by a machine tool in producing a generic workpiece by general milling operations. The developed tool simulates the execution of a standard ISO part program, basing on an explicit geometric and mechanistic representation of the cutting process, coupled with an energy model of the machine tool reproducing the power consumption of spindle, axes, and auxiliary units. Energy models were identified by an experimental characterization procedure that can be easily adopted in industrial contexts. The simulator was validated comparing the estimated energy with measurements performed on different cutting tests, evaluating also its computational effort. Moreover, the simulator performances were compared to alternative energy evaluation methods proposed in the literature.

The paper presents a method based on Markov decision processes to optimally schedule energy storage devices in power distribution networks with renewable generation. The time series of renewable generation is modeled as a Markov chain which allows for the implementation of a stochastic dynamic programming algorithm. The output of this algorithm is an optimal scheduling policy for the storage device achieving the minimization of an objective function including cost of energy and network losses. Besides this, other properties, such as energy storage placement and size, can be assessed and compared in optimized systems with different layouts.

Sugars streams generated by organosolv pretreatment of hemp hurds, cellulose (C6) and hemicellulose (C5) fractions, were fermented to lactic acid (LA) by Bacillus coagulans strains XZL4 and DSM1. Pretreatment conditions and enzymatic hydrolysis were optimized and B. coagulans aptness to use lignocellulosic-derived sugars as a carbon source was evaluated. Methanolic organosolv pretreatment with 2.5% (w/w) H2SO4 gave the best results in terms of glucan recovery (98%), enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated biomass (70%) and hemicellulosic sugars recovery (61%). C6 and C5 sugars fermentation by strain XZL4 gave, high LA yields (0.90 and 0.84 g/g), high titers (141 and 109 g/L), and high enantiomeric excess (>99%). Overall, 42 g of l-LA were obtained from 100 g of raw hemp hurds. These results can be considered promising for lignocellulosic feedstock valorization toward the production of polymer-grade LA.

One of the most fascinating characteristics of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is the retrieved obtainment of outstanding photovoltaic (PV) performances withstanding important device configuration variations. Here we have analyzed CH3NH3PbI3-xClx in planar or in mesostructured (MS) configurations, employing both titania and alumina scaffolds, fully infiltrated with perovskite material or presenting an overstanding layer. The use of the MS scaffold induces to the perovskite different structural properties, in terms of grain size, preferential orientation, and unit cell volume, in comparison to the ones of the material grown with no constraints, as we have found out by X-ray diffraction analyses. We have studied the effect of the PSC configuration on photoinduced absorption and time-resolved photoluminescence, complementary techniques that allow studying charge photogeneration and recombination. We have estimated electron diffusion length in the considered configurations observing a decrease when the material is confined in the MS scaffold with respect to a planar architecture. However, the presence of perovskite overlayer allows an overall recovering of long diffusion lengths explaining the record PV performances obtained with a device configuration bearing both the mesostructure and a perovskite overlayer. Our results suggest that performance in devices with perovskite overlayer is mainly ruled by the overlayer, whereas the mesoporous layer influences the contact properties.

The techno-economic feasibility of three biogas utilization processes was assessed through computer simulations on commercial process simulator Aspen HYSYS: HPC (biogas to methanol), BioCH (biogas to biomethane) and CHP (biogas to heat & electricity). The last two processes are already used commercially with the aid of subsidy policies. The economic analysis indicates that, without these policies, none of these attain economic self-sustainability due to high overall manufacturing costs. The estimated minimum support cost (MSCs) were 108, 62 and 109 EUR/MWh for the HPC, BioCH and CHP processes, respectively. The model could explain currently practised government subsidies in Italy and Germany. It was seen that the newly proposed HPC process is economically comparable to the traditional CHP process. Therefore, the HPC process is a possible alternative to biogas usage. A support policy was proposed: 50, 66, 158 and 148 EUR/MWh for available heat, methane, electricity and methanol (respectively); the proposed energy policy results in a 10% OpEx rate of return for any of the processes, thus avoiding a disparity in the production of different products.

The chemical dissolution of anodically grown Si oxides in acidic fluoride medium has been studied in-situ with the Bending Beam Method (BBM). Current and deflection transients were recorded after switching the electrode from the given polarization conditions to zero applied field and monitoring the etchback process. Oxide stress values estimated with this approach are free from contributions due to film electrostriction and to changes in surface tension. Transients recorded after polarization in the regime of current or potential oscillations show dissolution patterns which contain information on the properties of oxide film along its depth profile.

Cathodic protection of metals in seawater is known to be influenced by chemical-physical parameters affecting cathodic processes (oxygen discharge, hydrogen evolution and calcareous deposit precipitation). In shallowseawater, these parameters are influenced by sunlight photoperiod and photosynthetic activity. The results presented here represent the first step in studies dedicated to cathodic protection in shallow photic seawater. This paper reports on carbon steel protected at -850mV vs. Ag/AgCl (oxygen limiting current regime) in the presence of sunlight radiation but in the absence of biological and photosynthetic activity, the role of which deserves future research. Comparison of results obtained by exposing electrochemical cells to daylight cycles in both biologically inactivated natural seawater and in NaCl 3.5 wt.% solutions showed that sunlight affects current densities and that calcareous deposit interfere with lightcurrents effects. Sunlight radiation and induced heating of the solution have been separated, highlighting results not otherwise obvious: (1) observed current waves concomitant with sunlight radiation depend fundamentally on solar radiation, (2) solar radiation can determine current enhancements from early to late phases of aragonite crystal growth, (3) a three-day-old CaCO3 layer reduces but does not eliminate the amplitude of the current waves. Theoretical calculations for oxygen limiting currents and additional field tests showed that sunlight, rather than bulk solution heating, is the main cause of daily current enhancements. This was confirmed by polarizations performed at -850 and -1000mV vs. Ag/AgCl (constant bulk temperature), during which the electrode was irradiated with artificial lighting. This test also confirmed O2 discharge to be the cathodic process involved. A mechanism of radiation conversion to heat in the oxygen diffusion layer region is proposed.

The paper describes a novel approach, Total Factory Simulation, for integration of energy and material flows in manufacturing as well as building simulation combined in a csolution to support planning and optimization of green factories. The first ready module of the approach based on PlantSimulation which explains the integration of energy flows based on programming and thermodynamic estimations within the application is in focus of this paper. A use case of the module in an Italian SME is presented for sequencing purposes taking into account environmental performances
