Bollas; Chen Chen;Abstract System-level dynamic models of power plants are valuable tools for the assessment and prediction of plant performance, decisions on the design configuration, and the tuning of operating procedures and control strategies. In this work, the development of an integrated power plant model is presented. This model is validated against steady-state data from a subcritical power plant with reheat and regenerative cycles. The coal-fired power plant model studied has nominal power generation of 605 MW and efficiency of 38.3%. Traditional, regulatory control architectures are incorporated into and tuned with the dynamic power plant model. Dynamic simulation shows that the plant model is stable for sudden changes in coal load, and the controllers are able to maintain the controlled variables at their set points. In this two-part publication, we present the complete workflow of data collection, model development and validation, control tuning, dynamic optimization formulation and solution, and supervisory control architecture for a coal-fired subcritical power plant. Part I focuses on elements of model development and analysis, illustrating the advantages of acausal, object-oriented modeling in power plant simulation. Part II illustrates the use of this model for efficiency optimization under transient part-load operation.

Smith; Hiroshi Inomata; Kenji Morohashi; Masaki Ota;Abstract The dynamics of CH 4 replacement in the CH 4 hydrate with saturated liquid CO 2 at 273.2 K was measured with a high pressure optical cell. The results showed that CH 4 in the hydrate gradually moved to the liquid CO 2 phase while CO 2 in the liquid phase penetrated into the hydrate from the quantitative analysis. The decomposing process of the CH 4 hydrate during the replacement was analyzed with in situ Raman spectroscopy, which allowed us to distinguish the cage structure of the CH 4 hydrate and discuss the microscopic view of the replacement in the hydrate. It was found that the decomposition of the medium cage (M-cage) in the CH 4 hydrate proceeded faster than that of the small cage (S-cage). The observed rate difference could be related to the stability of the S-cage in the CH 4 hydrate or the re-formation tendency of CH 4 and water molecules in the S-cage after decomposing the hydrate structure, whereas the guest molecule exchange of CH 4 with CO 2 could occur in the M-cage. Based on the experimental data, we developed a kinetic model for calculation of the CH 4 remaining in the hydrate considering the decomposition rate difference between the M-cage and S-cage in the CH 4 hydrate. The results indicate that the driving force could be the fugacity difference between the fluid phase and the hydrate phase for the replacement process.

Mori;Abstract The clathrate hydrate formation at the interface between liquefied carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and liquid water is one of the key processes in the course of direct CO 2 disposal into deep seas—an option to mitigate the emission of CO 2 into the atmosphere. Eight different models have been proposed so far on the formation and metabolic self-preservation of a hydrate film at the interface and also the mass transfer of CO 2 across the hydrate film. This paper reviews those rival models one by one and illustrates how they are discrepant. Each model is critically examined, and if any, its weakness in physical reality or mathematical formulation is pointed out. The state of the art of hydrate-film modeling thus revealed suggests the necessity of more careful consulting of pertinent experimental observations to establish our physical view about hydrate films, which should serve as the base of any further work on hydrate-film modeling.

The validation has been carried out through a comparison with results of previous studies conducted in the worldwide most renowned laboratories, i.e., Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NERL). The comparison with experimental data collected by SNL, during LS-2 tests at AZTRAK platform, has shown good agreement, particularly for the case of receivers with Cermet coating. When compared with the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) code developed by NREL, the novel model offers improvements in the accuracy of thermal performance prediction. It has been found that the proposed model in the present study predicts more accurately the thermal efficiency than EES; with an average uncertainty of 0.64% compared to 1.11% for ESS, in the case of Cermet coating. Nevertheless, minor inaccuracy in the estimation of heat losses at higher operation temperatures has been found due to the error propagation in the model. The present work also includes a survey of the design and manufacturing processes of the parabolic trough collector that are of a particular interest for developing this promising technology.

In both methodologies, the PI based LFC problem is reduced to a static output feedback (SOF) control synthesis for a multiple delay system. The first one is based on the optimal H ∞ control design using a linear matrix inequalities (LMI) technique. The second control design gives a suboptimal solution using a developed iterative linear matrix inequalities (ILMI) algorithm via the mixed H 2 / H ∞ control technique. The control strategies are suitable for LFC applications that usually employ PI control. The proposed control strategies are applied to a three control area power system with time delays and load disturbance to demonstrate their robustness.

Ragauskas; Naijia Hao;Abstract Catalytic fast co-pyrolysis (co-CFP) of bamboo sawdust and waste tire over HZSM-5 and MgO was conducted using a tandem pyrolysis and upgrading system which consists of a bubbling fluidized bed and a fixed bed reactor. HZSM-5 mixed and sequential with MgO modes were studied to explore the additive effect for the promotion of aromatic hydrocarbons. Experimental results indicated that co-CFP of bamboo sawdust with waste tire over pure HZSM-5 increased the yields of pyrolysis oil and char, while the gas yield decreased with the increasing of waste tire percentage in the feedstock blends. The product distribution of pyrolysis oil obtained from co-CFP of bamboo sawdust and waste tire over pure HZSM-5 was dominated by aromatic hydrocarbons, and the relative concentration increased from 26.71 to 71.50% as the waste tire percentage elevated from 0 to 60 wt%. Co-CFP of bamboo sawdust and waste tire using HZSM-5 mixed with MgO mode produced a higher yield of pyrolysis oil than the sequential mode when HZSM-5/MgO mass ratio was raised from 1:4 to 1:1. However, the sequential mode was proved to be more effective in the promotion of aromatic hydrocarbons than the mixed mode at a higher HZSM-5 proportion. A positive additive effect for alkylbenzenes was found when the sequential mode was used at varying HZSM-5/MgO mass ratios. Regarding the olefins, C10 olefins were main products, and limonene selectivity increased at first and then decreased with the highest selectivity of 38.87% occurring at HZSM-5/MgO of 2:3 in the mixed mode case. The additive effect of HZSM-5 and MgO indicated that both the mixed and sequential modes inhibited the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with the most significant additive effect obtained at HZSM-5/MgO mass ratio of 1:1 using the mixed mode.

Chung; Uisung Lee; Teresa Benítez; Pablo Campo;Abstract A mathematical model that describes a trailer scale biomass steam gasification system coupled with a solar collector heat source and a micro gas turbine is reported in this paper. This combined heat and power system is set to a prescribed output of 20 kW e and several system conditions have been optimized in a parametric study to minimize resource consumption rates. Biomass feeding rates under optimal conditions were found to range between 23 and 63 kg/h depending on the types of feedstock and other parameters. Water consumption is reduced through a condensation and recirculation process that is part of a heat recovery unit. Also, solar energy requirements have been reduced by means of a recuperator that extracts heat out of the combustion products. The overall system performance has been evaluated by a utilization factor which was found to range between 30% and 43%. The system has been compared to a baseline case of an air breathing gasification system of a similar scale. It was found that steam gasification produces the syngas with heating values over twice as high as those obtained by air gasification. Steam gasification also led to a 25% and 50% reduction in emission rates of contaminants like CO 2 and nitrogen oxides respectively relative to the baseline case.

El-Halwagi;Abstract Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is a promising thermal-to-power technology that uses low-temperature heat from various sources including renewable energy and waste heat. A zeotropic fluid ORC offers thermodynamic-performance advantages over pure fluid ORC because of the relatively low irreversibility during the heat transfer process. Nonetheless, zeotropic fluid ORC may incur higher cost than pure fluid ORC because the former has high mass transfer resistance and small temperature difference in the heat exchanger. Limited research has been carried out to enhance thermo-economic performance of zeotropic ORC. In the present study, an ORC that uses zeotropic fluids and undergoes liquid–vapor separation during condensation is proposed. A thermo-economic analysis is developed based on a new optimization model for the proposed ORC. The objective function of the optimization model is the minimization of the specific investment cost. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization model. A case study is then solved to illustrate the advantages of the proposed ORC and validate the proposed thermo-economic optimization method. The results of the thermodynamic analysis show that the condenser area of the proposed ORC is 17.6% lower than that of the conventional ORC under the same working conditions. Thermo-economic optimization results show that the specific investment cost of the proposed ORC is 13.3–18.4% lower than that of the basic ORC. Meanwhile, the second law efficiency of the proposed ORC is 4.2% higher than that of the conventional ORC. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to assess the dependence of the ORC performance on the temperatures of the heat source and the surrounding environment.

The results indicate the temperature distributions from the numerical simulation are qualitatively in line with the experimental measurements. Cyclic temperature variations occur amid freezer, refrigerating, and vegetable compartments due to on/off control strategy. However, it is found that the temperature variation for freezer and refrigerating compartment are in phase with each other while the temperature variation in vegetable compartment is roughly out-of-phase with the other two compartments. The simulations show that the design of air duct and its locations may impose a detrimental role on the temperature uniformity within the refrigerator, yet the airflow is strongly influenced by gravity. It is also found that the refrigerating compartment possesses the worst temperature non-uniformity. For improving the temperature non-uniformity, a modified design incorporating the air duct design with appropriate locations of the inlet openings in the freezer and refrigerating compartment is proposed. Though these modifications the maximum temperature difference and the root mean-square of temperature variation in refrigerating compartment, had been reduced from 7.17 °C to 3.57 °C and from 3.17 °C to 1.55 °C, respectively.

Bollas; Chen Chen;Abstract System-level dynamic models of power plants are valuable tools for the assessment and prediction of plant performance, decisions on the design configuration, and the tuning of operating procedures and control strategies. In this work, the development of an integrated power plant model is presented. This model is validated against steady-state data from a subcritical power plant with reheat and regenerative cycles. The coal-fired power plant model studied has nominal power generation of 605 MW and efficiency of 38.3%. Traditional, regulatory control architectures are incorporated into and tuned with the dynamic power plant model. Dynamic simulation shows that the plant model is stable for sudden changes in coal load, and the controllers are able to maintain the controlled variables at their set points. In this two-part publication, we present the complete workflow of data collection, model development and validation, control tuning, dynamic optimization formulation and solution, and supervisory control architecture for a coal-fired subcritical power plant. Part I focuses on elements of model development and analysis, illustrating the advantages of acausal, object-oriented modeling in power plant simulation. Part II illustrates the use of this model for efficiency optimization under transient part-load operation.

Smith; Hiroshi Inomata; Kenji Morohashi; Masaki Ota;Abstract The dynamics of CH 4 replacement in the CH 4 hydrate with saturated liquid CO 2 at 273.2 K was measured with a high pressure optical cell. The results showed that CH 4 in the hydrate gradually moved to the liquid CO 2 phase while CO 2 in the liquid phase penetrated into the hydrate from the quantitative analysis. The decomposing process of the CH 4 hydrate during the replacement was analyzed with in situ Raman spectroscopy, which allowed us to distinguish the cage structure of the CH 4 hydrate and discuss the microscopic view of the replacement in the hydrate. It was found that the decomposition of the medium cage (M-cage) in the CH 4 hydrate proceeded faster than that of the small cage (S-cage). The observed rate difference could be related to the stability of the S-cage in the CH 4 hydrate or the re-formation tendency of CH 4 and water molecules in the S-cage after decomposing the hydrate structure, whereas the guest molecule exchange of CH 4 with CO 2 could occur in the M-cage. Based on the experimental data, we developed a kinetic model for calculation of the CH 4 remaining in the hydrate considering the decomposition rate difference between the M-cage and S-cage in the CH 4 hydrate. The results indicate that the driving force could be the fugacity difference between the fluid phase and the hydrate phase for the replacement process.

Mori;Abstract The clathrate hydrate formation at the interface between liquefied carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and liquid water is one of the key processes in the course of direct CO 2 disposal into deep seas—an option to mitigate the emission of CO 2 into the atmosphere. Eight different models have been proposed so far on the formation and metabolic self-preservation of a hydrate film at the interface and also the mass transfer of CO 2 across the hydrate film. This paper reviews those rival models one by one and illustrates how they are discrepant. Each model is critically examined, and if any, its weakness in physical reality or mathematical formulation is pointed out. The state of the art of hydrate-film modeling thus revealed suggests the necessity of more careful consulting of pertinent experimental observations to establish our physical view about hydrate films, which should serve as the base of any further work on hydrate-film modeling.

The validation has been carried out through a comparison with results of previous studies conducted in the worldwide most renowned laboratories, i.e., Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NERL). The comparison with experimental data collected by SNL, during LS-2 tests at AZTRAK platform, has shown good agreement, particularly for the case of receivers with Cermet coating. When compared with the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) code developed by NREL, the novel model offers improvements in the accuracy of thermal performance prediction. It has been found that the proposed model in the present study predicts more accurately the thermal efficiency than EES; with an average uncertainty of 0.64% compared to 1.11% for ESS, in the case of Cermet coating. Nevertheless, minor inaccuracy in the estimation of heat losses at higher operation temperatures has been found due to the error propagation in the model. The present work also includes a survey of the design and manufacturing processes of the parabolic trough collector that are of a particular interest for developing this promising technology.

In both methodologies, the PI based LFC problem is reduced to a static output feedback (SOF) control synthesis for a multiple delay system. The first one is based on the optimal H ∞ control design using a linear matrix inequalities (LMI) technique. The second control design gives a suboptimal solution using a developed iterative linear matrix inequalities (ILMI) algorithm via the mixed H 2 / H ∞ control technique. The control strategies are suitable for LFC applications that usually employ PI control. The proposed control strategies are applied to a three control area power system with time delays and load disturbance to demonstrate their robustness.

Ragauskas; Naijia Hao;Abstract Catalytic fast co-pyrolysis (co-CFP) of bamboo sawdust and waste tire over HZSM-5 and MgO was conducted using a tandem pyrolysis and upgrading system which consists of a bubbling fluidized bed and a fixed bed reactor. HZSM-5 mixed and sequential with MgO modes were studied to explore the additive effect for the promotion of aromatic hydrocarbons. Experimental results indicated that co-CFP of bamboo sawdust with waste tire over pure HZSM-5 increased the yields of pyrolysis oil and char, while the gas yield decreased with the increasing of waste tire percentage in the feedstock blends. The product distribution of pyrolysis oil obtained from co-CFP of bamboo sawdust and waste tire over pure HZSM-5 was dominated by aromatic hydrocarbons, and the relative concentration increased from 26.71 to 71.50% as the waste tire percentage elevated from 0 to 60 wt%. Co-CFP of bamboo sawdust and waste tire using HZSM-5 mixed with MgO mode produced a higher yield of pyrolysis oil than the sequential mode when HZSM-5/MgO mass ratio was raised from 1:4 to 1:1. However, the sequential mode was proved to be more effective in the promotion of aromatic hydrocarbons than the mixed mode at a higher HZSM-5 proportion. A positive additive effect for alkylbenzenes was found when the sequential mode was used at varying HZSM-5/MgO mass ratios. Regarding the olefins, C10 olefins were main products, and limonene selectivity increased at first and then decreased with the highest selectivity of 38.87% occurring at HZSM-5/MgO of 2:3 in the mixed mode case. The additive effect of HZSM-5 and MgO indicated that both the mixed and sequential modes inhibited the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with the most significant additive effect obtained at HZSM-5/MgO mass ratio of 1:1 using the mixed mode.

Chung; Uisung Lee; Teresa Benítez; Pablo Campo;Abstract A mathematical model that describes a trailer scale biomass steam gasification system coupled with a solar collector heat source and a micro gas turbine is reported in this paper. This combined heat and power system is set to a prescribed output of 20 kW e and several system conditions have been optimized in a parametric study to minimize resource consumption rates. Biomass feeding rates under optimal conditions were found to range between 23 and 63 kg/h depending on the types of feedstock and other parameters. Water consumption is reduced through a condensation and recirculation process that is part of a heat recovery unit. Also, solar energy requirements have been reduced by means of a recuperator that extracts heat out of the combustion products. The overall system performance has been evaluated by a utilization factor which was found to range between 30% and 43%. The system has been compared to a baseline case of an air breathing gasification system of a similar scale. It was found that steam gasification produces the syngas with heating values over twice as high as those obtained by air gasification. Steam gasification also led to a 25% and 50% reduction in emission rates of contaminants like CO 2 and nitrogen oxides respectively relative to the baseline case.

El-Halwagi;Abstract Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is a promising thermal-to-power technology that uses low-temperature heat from various sources including renewable energy and waste heat. A zeotropic fluid ORC offers thermodynamic-performance advantages over pure fluid ORC because of the relatively low irreversibility during the heat transfer process. Nonetheless, zeotropic fluid ORC may incur higher cost than pure fluid ORC because the former has high mass transfer resistance and small temperature difference in the heat exchanger. Limited research has been carried out to enhance thermo-economic performance of zeotropic ORC. In the present study, an ORC that uses zeotropic fluids and undergoes liquid–vapor separation during condensation is proposed. A thermo-economic analysis is developed based on a new optimization model for the proposed ORC. The objective function of the optimization model is the minimization of the specific investment cost. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization model. A case study is then solved to illustrate the advantages of the proposed ORC and validate the proposed thermo-economic optimization method. The results of the thermodynamic analysis show that the condenser area of the proposed ORC is 17.6% lower than that of the conventional ORC under the same working conditions. Thermo-economic optimization results show that the specific investment cost of the proposed ORC is 13.3–18.4% lower than that of the basic ORC. Meanwhile, the second law efficiency of the proposed ORC is 4.2% higher than that of the conventional ORC. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to assess the dependence of the ORC performance on the temperatures of the heat source and the surrounding environment.

The results indicate the temperature distributions from the numerical simulation are qualitatively in line with the experimental measurements. Cyclic temperature variations occur amid freezer, refrigerating, and vegetable compartments due to on/off control strategy. However, it is found that the temperature variation for freezer and refrigerating compartment are in phase with each other while the temperature variation in vegetable compartment is roughly out-of-phase with the other two compartments. The simulations show that the design of air duct and its locations may impose a detrimental role on the temperature uniformity within the refrigerator, yet the airflow is strongly influenced by gravity. It is also found that the refrigerating compartment possesses the worst temperature non-uniformity. For improving the temperature non-uniformity, a modified design incorporating the air duct design with appropriate locations of the inlet openings in the freezer and refrigerating compartment is proposed. Though these modifications the maximum temperature difference and the root mean-square of temperature variation in refrigerating compartment, had been reduced from 7.17 °C to 3.57 °C and from 3.17 °C to 1.55 °C, respectively.
