YouTube has the potential to significantly impact Korean millennials’ daily lives. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether the value of YouTube can be explained by Korean students’ learning needs and practice. This qualitative study attempts to add a new dimension to possible ways of using YouTube for educational purposes. Focusing on narratives of first-year Korean international students studying in the U.S., this study examines the ways in which using YouTube contributes to students’ linguistic and cultural diversity. Findings reveal that YouTube helps expand students’ perspectives on cross-cultural understanding. The educational use of YouTube also leads students to academic pursuits and engagement during studying abroad by developing content knowledge and skills in English. It further enables students to enhance their knowledge of English as a global language by taking ownership. Ultimately, YouTube plays an indispensable role in supporting Korean international students’ academic and social progress in the transitional phase from their home to host countries. From these findings, and in response to the post-COVID era, the implications for the new normal in education using social networking sites, YouTube in particular, are discussed for effective multilingual and multicultural education in South Korea.

Building upon studies on the information diffusion theory of a viral marketing survey, this study aims to understand the effect of young Chinese students’ online information sharing behavior on online brand community and determine the relationship among telepresence, flow-attention focus, flow-perceived enjoyment and electronic word-of-mouth depending on the level of the foreign students’ Korean language proficiency. Here, 178 valid data are obtained from an online survey of social networking service users who live in Korea and are experienced in using online movie brand communities. SmartPLS 2.0 is utilized to determine the relationship between variates. Statistical analysis shows that telepresence is applicable to the Chinese students’ online perceived enjoyment and attention focus, which both positively affect trust and movie information sharing behavior. Language proficiency has a significant moderation effect on the model. This study offers insights toward attaining a better understanding of online communication behaviors and establishing marketing strategies that are extendable to young Chinese students staying in Korea. This finding helps movie distributors to develop effective foreigner-inclined information diffusion strategies. This study contributes to the impact factor on consumer information sharing behavior and adds language proficiency as a moderator to determine consumer behavior.

New Renewable Energy (NRE) has attracted considerable attention as a future energy source that might be a significant factor in establishing a sustainable energy supply system. This issue is becoming increasingly important due to the instability of oil prices and the issues surrounding climate change. The purpose of this research is to develop a framework for the implementation of building-scale NRE systems (solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal, and wind energy systems). For this research, ‘C’ High School facility in Seoul was selected as a case study, from where project characteristics and energy consumption data in 2010 were collected. This research (i) collected facility usage information and carried out market research on NRE systems; (ii) conducted a feasibility study of NRE systems; (iii) designed a detailed NRE system through energy simulation by using the software program ‘RETScreen’; and (iv) selected the optimal NRE system through a life cycle cost analysis and life cycle CO2 analysis. This research can be useful for educational facility managers or policymakers to determine whether or not an NRE system need to be introduced in a preliminary feasibility study, and to find out which NRE system is the optimal one for a given facility in the detailed design process. Also, it would benefit contractors in a competitive bidding process, where as one of the CO2 emission reduction methods, the results of this research could be a part of an educational facility improvement program.

The purpose of this study was to examine the socioeconomic value of dance curricula as public education for sustainable development. To demonstrate the legitimacy of dance programming in the arts curriculum, we sought to determine which of the contingent valuation methods (CVMs) is best suited to the application of the WTP model and how the socioeconomic value of school dance is ultimately evaluated. As a research method, we leverage CVM, which is widely used in practical policy research. The results of this study are as follows: As a result of estimating the socioeconomic value of school dances conducted by public education, additional income tax payment was estimated at KRW 22,367 per person. Suppose this is translated into approximately 5.452 million school-aged people (as of 2020, KOSIS), the total benefits of a school dance in Korean public education could be interpreted as an annual utility value of about KRW 121,944,884,000. This study has academic significance in that it demonstrates the socioeconomic value of school dance education as education for sustainable development. In addition, it has practical significance in that it can be used for institutional improvements and policy budgeting.

Collecting and analyzing log data can provide students with individualized learning to maintain their motivation and engagement in learning activities and reduce dropout in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). As online learning becomes more and more important, the demand for learning analytics is surging to design a variety of interventions that can achieve learning success and achieve individual learning goals and targets. In response to significant demand, we intended to derive data standards for learning analytics by specifying more the factors influencing MOOC completion suggested in previous research results. Therefore, this study aims to compare the event logs of students who have achieved scores adjacent to the minimum passing score of Korean Massive Open Online Course (K-MOOC) completion by dividing them into the completion (C) group and the non-completion (NC) group. As a result of analyzing the log data accumulated on the 60 K-MOOCs, what is interesting in the results of this study is that there was no significant difference between the C group and the NC group in video viewing, which is considered the main learning activity on the MOOC platform. On the other hand, there was a statistically significant difference between the C group and the NC group for textbook interactions in the percentage of learners who performed and the average number of logs per learner, as well as problem interactions in the average number of logs per learner. Students’ assertive activities such as textbook interaction and problem interaction might have greater value for MOOC completion than passive activities such as video watching. Therefore, MOOC instructors and developers should explore more specific design guidelines on how to provide problems with individualized hints and feedback and offer effective digital textbooks or reference materials for the large number of students. The results suggest that collecting and analyzing MOOC students’ log data on interactions, for understanding their motivation and engagement, should be investigated to create an individualized learning environment and increase their learning persistence in completing MOOCs. Future studies should focus on investigating meaningful patterns of the event logs on learning activities in massive quantitative and qualitative data sets.

Urban resilience, which has emerged as an important concept in cities since sustainability became a 21st-century urban paradigm, reflects the needs of the times to change and bring about a shift in existing national landscape architecture and social policies. To explore the characteristics of recognition of college students majoring in landscape architecture towards the concept of urban resilience before and after the beginning of COVID-19, this study aims to answer three research questions: to analyzes recognitions of landscape architecture majoring students on urban resilience (research question 1); to compare the differences that emerge from before and after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (research question 2); and to explore latent classes according to the education pattern (research question 3). The results of this study are as follows: First, before the beginning of COVID-19, four latent classes were drawn up in relation to awareness of the concept of urban resilience, while three latent classes were examined after the start of the pandemic. Before the beginning of COVID-19, students of landscape architecture accepted the concept of urban resilience as a physical and environmental approach to overcome risk factors by creating landscape architecture and infrastructure or applying the concept of resilience in urban development and redevelopment. However, after the beginning of COVID-19, they mostly have been recognized urban resilience as a concept related to technological ability. Thirdly, the grades and educational experiences of the students were found to have a significant effect on the probability of their belonging to a specific latent class.

Previous studies have shown that there is what has been called a ‘gap’ between environmental knowledge and a willingness to act in a pro-environmental manner. For the individual, this gap is probably the result of the huge complexity of factors that affect behaviour. The way in which this ‘gap’ is sometimes identified in the literature, however, is also partly a function of the fact that much of the research in this area has compared environmental attitudes in general with a willingness to take actions that are specific. In the present study, we have circumvented this latter issue by exploring links between a declared willingness to undertake specific actions and the level of belief in the efficacy of those particular actions in reducing global warming.
