The questionnaires were administered by 11 data collection assistants who were trained by the researcher. One of the 11 data collectors was the team leader. The researcher collected data in 5 of the households to demonstrate and practice the data collection process. Data AnalysisQuantitative and qualitative data were analyzed and triangulated to validate the findings. The quantitative data was analyzed using a combination of the IBM SPSS techniques including frequencies, cross-tabulations, bivariate statistics, means, correlations and descriptive ratio statistics. Qualitative data from both respondents and key informants’ interviews were documented using filed notes and thematically analyzed. The analysis from both sets of data was then merged to present the results. The reduction of consumption subsidy has a great impact on the production and sales of new energy vehicles in the whole vehicle market. However, does the reduction of this subsidy also have an impact on other enterprises in the new energy vehicles industry chain? This paper tests this problem using data from 2016 to 2018, and finds, through empirical analysis, that during the period of subsidy decline, the profitability of component enterprises is significantly positively correlated with this subsidies, while the r&d investment of enterprises is significantly negatively correlated with this subsidies. The results show that in terms of profitability, the reduction of consumer subsidies not only has an impact on the whole vehicle industry of new energy vehicles, but also has an adverse impact on the core component companies in the industrial chain. However, in terms of r&d, the reduction of subsidies has more negatively strengthened the input and attention of R&D in component companies.

Achieving reductions in global anthropogenic emissions necessary to mitigate the worst effects of climate change will require significant reductions in energy demand. However, there are concerns that energy demand reductions involving lifestyle and behavioural changes might negatively impact peoples’ wellbeing. The work in this thesis studies the impacts of how people spend their time – commonly known as time-use – to try to understand whether this is the true, or whether energy demand could be reduced while improving wellbeing. Using the UK as a case study, this issue is examined by determining the energy use and wellbeing attributes of different activities and lifestyles, by modelling the impacts of shifts in time-use between activities, and by comparing the importance of three specific changes that might impact future energy use and wellbeing. Firstly, based upon existing literature it is identified that there is a need to better understand the combined energy and wellbeing impacts of different activities and lifestyles. Combining UK time-use and energy consumption data, the energy intensity, enjoyment and sociability of time is studied. Comparing these metrics for different activities suggests that since the most enjoyable (and in some cases sociable) activities are generally the least energy-intensive, acceptable (or popular) lifestyle changes might exist that reduce national energy use and improve wellbeing. However, studying changes between 2000 and 2015 shows that while the population’s time became less energy-intensive, there was little change in average enjoyment and a reduction in sociability. Segmenting the population by age reveals that an ageing population could present a challenge since energy use broadly increases with age-group while social contact reduces. However, comparing occupations highlights opportunities for specific actions that could improve wellbeing and reduce energy use, while regional differences suggest that wellbeing might be improved without increasing energy use. Having determined the energy intensity and wellbeing associated with different uses of time, the impacts of possible time-use changes are then studied. Acknowledging the difficulty in trying to predict how people might choose to re-allocate time in different situations, a sensitivity-based approach is used to study the impacts of a wide range of possible shifts in time between activities. The approach is then applied to explore the impacts of extreme lifestyle changes associated with COVID-19 lockdown measures in the UK and validated against real-world observations during the pandemic. While activity changes associated with lockdown measures reduce energy use, there are varying implications for peoples’ wellbeing, with the youngest appearing to be most negatively impacted but those able to work from home potentially benefiting. Although lockdown measures prevented some of the most enjoyable and sociable activities from happening, alternative activity changes could be supported in future that reduce energy use while improving wellbeing. Finally, time is used as a basis to compare the importance of different types of changes and help to prioritise actions. This is demonstrated by studying the combined impacts of three example changes – greater home working, changes in commuting transport modes and car intensity – on office workers’ energy use and wellbeing. The results show that working from home could have a greater impact upon office workers’ average energy use and enjoyment than changes to commuting modes, but that the social contact provided by the office could be difficult to replace. The study also demonstrates different ways that energy savings might be achieved through home working, shifts in commuting modes and changes to vehicle intensity. This approach could be used more widely to compare a broader range of changes, understand their interactions and different ways to achieve outcomes, and help to identify those changes that are most important to reduce energy use and improve wellbeing. The work presented in this thesis shows that time-use can be used as a basis to examine energy demand and wellbeing together. Using time-use to link these issues enables trade-offs or co-benefits due to different uses of time to be determined and allows rebound effects to be considered. The results suggest that reducing energy use can be achieved at the same time as improving wellbeing. The hope is that the approaches and findings presented in this thesis can provide a basis for wider discussion and a platform for future work to support climate change mitigation strategies that are positive for both the environment and society.

One promising way to produce alternative fuels is the Biomass-to-Liquid (BtL) process with the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis which produces synthetic hydrocarbons that could directly be used as liquid fuels in an existing infrastructure. One major issue of this process is the production cost. Within the European COMSYN project (Compact Gasification and Synthesis process for Transport Fuels), a new BtL process concept is developed that aims to reduce biofuel production cost up to 35 % compared to alternative routes.

Freight transport has emerged as one of the most critical and dynamic aspects of the transport sector where change has become the norm. It is now the main element supporting global commodity and more generally supply chains. Yet the lack of seamlessness and inefficiencies in general as well as the rising costs and complexities of shipping and delivering goods are adding to profit pressures faced by manufacturers across the globe. Our paper first discusses the concept of seamlessness, and then examines some of the consequences of the lack of seamlessness in terms of freight transport inefficiencies. We then begin to examine the new developments in which intermodality, technology (e-commerce), and logistics are changing and will have the impact of heightening competitive advantage and reducing constraint points in production value chains and global production networks. Finally the intent is to show how research on this theme might be advanced in a trans-Atlantic framework.

Due to the prevailing economic crisis, Argentina has been facing a growing number of informal workers, many of them urban recyclers. Following the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated decline in formal employment, this number can be expected to rise even further. Increased recycling activity is, in principle, a positive development. However, the working conditions of urban recyclers often do not correspond to the ILO definition of “decent work”. It is therefore important to ask how the recycling system in Argentina can be shaped to be socially sustainable, as well as environmentally and economically sustainable. Based on qualitative stakeholder interviews, our research aimed to collect and synthesise the ideas and expectations of a diverse set of actors in the recycling sector of Buenos Aires City and selected municipalities of Buenos Aires Province. This enabled us to identify four key areas of dispute and potential action. First, work in urban recycling is a form of social safety net in Argentina, as in many countries with persistent poverty. This can lead to a trade-off between maintaining the social function of the sector and subjecting it to the kinds of efficiency requirements placed on other sectors. Given the inherent power asymmetries between large companies and individual urban recyclers, the latter may be crowded out once the sector becomes profitable. Second, it is important to avoid viewing urban recyclers as recipients of charity. By re-introducing materials into the resource cycle and reducing pressure on landfills, they create positive externalities and offer a valuable service to society. Paying urban recyclers for the service component of their work in addition to the value of the raw materials collected would constitute a significant step towards ensuring both decent incomes and broad social recognition of the workers’ value. Third, the knowledge and experience gathered by urban recyclers holds great potential for grassroots innovations, such as making productive use of materials that do not currently have a market. With the cooperation of other actors, such as universities, and the provision of resources and support via the removal of red tape, these innovators could more easily employ their ideas to the benefit of society. Fourth, as a cross-cutting issue, all solutions aimed at unlocking the potential of urban recycling for a transition of the waste sector towards economic, ecological and social sustainability require a careful navigation of the political economy dimension. Constellations of interests have led to incentives that are, in many cases, not conducive to economic efficiency and bind resources that could otherwise be used to improve recycling schemes. Reform of these incentives requires a careful analysis of power constellations and potential change coalitions. Discussion Paper

The meeting brought together actors and professionals involved in all parts of the regional legume agri-food chain (LAFC), to interact with members of the TRUE project. The project TRUE (TRansition paths to sUstainable legume-based systems in Europe) is involved in the development of European strategies for the sustainable production and use of plant proteins obtained from legumes. An increase in production of legumes is expected to lower the usage of non-renewable resources used in the production of mineral fertilisers. It will also improve crop diversity and increase human and animal consumption of legumes. An important objective of the project TRUE is to assess environmental, social and economic benefits of incorporating legumes into agri-food chains, as well as to investigate in what way such incorporation is meeting the key goals of sustainable development. The task of the TRUE project is also to engage with different stakeholders in the LAFC. Therefore, the workshops participants were representatives of growers, food industry, transport, trade and consumers, whose activities already incorporate legumes or who are planning to do so. On the first day of the workshop, we focused on assessing the key sustainability aspects of individual links within the LAFC as well as the chain as a whole. The knowledge gained will help the workshop participants to reach sustainable development targets in their own area of work. Researchers as well as stakeholders taking part in the TRUE project, through the workshop discussions, obtained useful information that will be used for future development of the evaluation model for the assessment of sustainability of the LAFC. Day two focused on knowledge exchange, showcasing examples of good practice during a field trip. The participants first visited the company Žito d.o.o, a food company that, while modern, maintains its roots in a rich and prosperous tradition. They are constantly following the trends and successfully introducing them into modern production technology with a revolutionary market approach, which includes legumes. The next stop was Semenarna Ljubljana – a seed and packing company. Semenarna Ljubljana is one of the region’s top providers of quality seeds. Their development is based on their own crops, products and services. They maintain over 70 different seed varieties from 26 plant species (including common beans, soybeans, peas, chickpeas and lentils), of which 37 are indigenous Slovenian varieties. The last stop was at the Etri community, a leading group in the field of social entrepreneurship, whose aims are to build an inclusive society and change social norms. They are changing their practice in the fields of ecology, ergonomics and ethical economics. The story of the Etri community is about creating green jobs for individuals, often excluded from society, in collaboration with socially responsible companies. They intend to include more legumes in their meals and at the end of the visit they prepared a delicious legumes showcase lunch for the delegates. The whole event focused on the five links of the LAFC. 43 participants (21 females and 22 males) attended the workshop, of which six were TRUE members that acted as facilitators and four were invited government guest that discussed different aspects of LAFC related topics: regulatory organizations, education and knowledge transfer, financial and business mechanisms and public participation.

AbstractWith the global economy not yet 10% circular, businesses are key stakeholders in designing new forms of resource use, especially large multinationals. However, compared with the wealth of studies on ‘born sustainable’ start‐ups, there is minimal case study or interview based research into how incumbent companies are approaching this transition. Focusing on plastics, we ask: how does one incumbent multinational company approach the circular economy transition? This paper presents a case study of the incumbent multinational chemical company Dow, a leading plastics manufacturer. Varied external stressors and drivers for the circular economy act upon a company (which also has its own imperatives), resulting in tentative steps towards circular economy. To date, these steps have tweaked the existing system rather than radically altering the business model. For companies, like for the entire global economy, this transition has only just begun. This paper identifies key drivers, enablers and barriers of the circular economy, none of which are fixed or immutable. Knowing which levers for change are available and effective could help policy makers to shift gear to enable quicker progress towards circularity. Overall, broad based support and engagement is needed to progress the circular economy, hence all stakeholders have roles to play in demanding and enacting circular practices. Applying the model to less aggregate level data helps avoiding the distortions from exogenous structural shifts and measurement errors. The results confirm the previous findings that including capital stock vintages significantly improves the econometric model's goodness of fit. Estimated own-price elasticities of energy demand vary between 0.26 and 1.00 and are economically sound. Estimated own-price investment elasticities of energy efficiency of capital stock vary between 0.03 and 0.9. The investment response to energy prices thus varies significantly across manufacturing industries, being significant in some of them and negligible in other. The results of policy simulations for the U.K. petrochemical industry (the most energy-intensive industry in the sample) indicate that total (operational and investment) own-price elasticity of energy demand is close to one.

The first part of the thesis deals with econometric challenges that arise in the estimation of gravity models. Specifically, the first chapter considers Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimation of the intensive margin of trade, i.e. of how much two countries trade with one another. It offers a solution to the computational challenge posed by several sets of high-dimensional fixed effects in a non-linear panel data setting. It then applies the proposed iterative estimation procedure to re-assess the effect of a common currency on bilateral trade flows and does not find a significant effect. The second chapter considers the extensive margin of international trade, i.e. the question whether two countries trade with each other at all. It provides a model and econometric specification that allow for persistence due to both unobserved bilateral heterogeneity and true state dependence. An incidental parameter bias correction for the proposed dynamic high-dimensional fixed effects probit estimator is developed and the desirable properties of the bias-corrected estimator are demonstrated in Monte Carlo simulations. The estimator is then applied to the estimation of the extensive margin determinants. Taking into account the two sources of persistence is shown to matter considerably for the empirical results. Specifically, the chapter presents evidence that the extensive margin is characterized by a high level of persistence. The second part of the dissertation deals with the interplay of climate policy and international trade. In the third chapter, the trade, welfare, and emission effects of carbon tariffs are analysed. Carbon tariffs equalize carbon price differentials in order to reduce carbon leakage. For the analysis, an extended structural gravity model including a sectoral structure and a multi-factor production structure with emissions is developed that allows a decomposition of emission changes into scale, composition, and technique effects. The counterfactual analysis shows that carbon tariffs can reduce global emissions by mainly altering the sectoral composition, however at the cost of reduced trade flows and welfare losses for most, especially developing, countries. The last chapter of the dissertation deals with the consequences of unilateral withdrawals from the Paris Agreement. It considers not only the direct effect of a lower global sum of reduction targets, but also the indirect effect of the withdrawing country increasing its emissions beyond the business-as-usual emission path in response to the rest of the world’s climate policies. An extension of the model developed in chapter three is presented that incorporates both carbon leakage due to comparative advantage changes in international trade and via the international fossil fuel market. The counterfactual analysis reveals that a US withdrawal would harm the effectiveness of the Paris Agreement most strongly and eliminate one third of the global emission reduction. The leakage effect would be strongest in case of a Chinese withdrawal.

The questionnaires were administered by 11 data collection assistants who were trained by the researcher. One of the 11 data collectors was the team leader. The researcher collected data in 5 of the households to demonstrate and practice the data collection process. Data AnalysisQuantitative and qualitative data were analyzed and triangulated to validate the findings. The quantitative data was analyzed using a combination of the IBM SPSS techniques including frequencies, cross-tabulations, bivariate statistics, means, correlations and descriptive ratio statistics. Qualitative data from both respondents and key informants’ interviews were documented using filed notes and thematically analyzed. The analysis from both sets of data was then merged to present the results. The reduction of consumption subsidy has a great impact on the production and sales of new energy vehicles in the whole vehicle market. However, does the reduction of this subsidy also have an impact on other enterprises in the new energy vehicles industry chain? This paper tests this problem using data from 2016 to 2018, and finds, through empirical analysis, that during the period of subsidy decline, the profitability of component enterprises is significantly positively correlated with this subsidies, while the r&d investment of enterprises is significantly negatively correlated with this subsidies. The results show that in terms of profitability, the reduction of consumer subsidies not only has an impact on the whole vehicle industry of new energy vehicles, but also has an adverse impact on the core component companies in the industrial chain. However, in terms of r&d, the reduction of subsidies has more negatively strengthened the input and attention of R&D in component companies.

Achieving reductions in global anthropogenic emissions necessary to mitigate the worst effects of climate change will require significant reductions in energy demand. However, there are concerns that energy demand reductions involving lifestyle and behavioural changes might negatively impact peoples’ wellbeing. The work in this thesis studies the impacts of how people spend their time – commonly known as time-use – to try to understand whether this is the true, or whether energy demand could be reduced while improving wellbeing. Using the UK as a case study, this issue is examined by determining the energy use and wellbeing attributes of different activities and lifestyles, by modelling the impacts of shifts in time-use between activities, and by comparing the importance of three specific changes that might impact future energy use and wellbeing. Firstly, based upon existing literature it is identified that there is a need to better understand the combined energy and wellbeing impacts of different activities and lifestyles. Combining UK time-use and energy consumption data, the energy intensity, enjoyment and sociability of time is studied. Comparing these metrics for different activities suggests that since the most enjoyable (and in some cases sociable) activities are generally the least energy-intensive, acceptable (or popular) lifestyle changes might exist that reduce national energy use and improve wellbeing. However, studying changes between 2000 and 2015 shows that while the population’s time became less energy-intensive, there was little change in average enjoyment and a reduction in sociability. Segmenting the population by age reveals that an ageing population could present a challenge since energy use broadly increases with age-group while social contact reduces. However, comparing occupations highlights opportunities for specific actions that could improve wellbeing and reduce energy use, while regional differences suggest that wellbeing might be improved without increasing energy use. Having determined the energy intensity and wellbeing associated with different uses of time, the impacts of possible time-use changes are then studied. Acknowledging the difficulty in trying to predict how people might choose to re-allocate time in different situations, a sensitivity-based approach is used to study the impacts of a wide range of possible shifts in time between activities. The approach is then applied to explore the impacts of extreme lifestyle changes associated with COVID-19 lockdown measures in the UK and validated against real-world observations during the pandemic. While activity changes associated with lockdown measures reduce energy use, there are varying implications for peoples’ wellbeing, with the youngest appearing to be most negatively impacted but those able to work from home potentially benefiting. Although lockdown measures prevented some of the most enjoyable and sociable activities from happening, alternative activity changes could be supported in future that reduce energy use while improving wellbeing. Finally, time is used as a basis to compare the importance of different types of changes and help to prioritise actions. This is demonstrated by studying the combined impacts of three example changes – greater home working, changes in commuting transport modes and car intensity – on office workers’ energy use and wellbeing. The results show that working from home could have a greater impact upon office workers’ average energy use and enjoyment than changes to commuting modes, but that the social contact provided by the office could be difficult to replace. The study also demonstrates different ways that energy savings might be achieved through home working, shifts in commuting modes and changes to vehicle intensity. This approach could be used more widely to compare a broader range of changes, understand their interactions and different ways to achieve outcomes, and help to identify those changes that are most important to reduce energy use and improve wellbeing. The work presented in this thesis shows that time-use can be used as a basis to examine energy demand and wellbeing together. Using time-use to link these issues enables trade-offs or co-benefits due to different uses of time to be determined and allows rebound effects to be considered. The results suggest that reducing energy use can be achieved at the same time as improving wellbeing. The hope is that the approaches and findings presented in this thesis can provide a basis for wider discussion and a platform for future work to support climate change mitigation strategies that are positive for both the environment and society.

One promising way to produce alternative fuels is the Biomass-to-Liquid (BtL) process with the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis which produces synthetic hydrocarbons that could directly be used as liquid fuels in an existing infrastructure. One major issue of this process is the production cost. Within the European COMSYN project (Compact Gasification and Synthesis process for Transport Fuels), a new BtL process concept is developed that aims to reduce biofuel production cost up to 35 % compared to alternative routes.

Freight transport has emerged as one of the most critical and dynamic aspects of the transport sector where change has become the norm. It is now the main element supporting global commodity and more generally supply chains. Yet the lack of seamlessness and inefficiencies in general as well as the rising costs and complexities of shipping and delivering goods are adding to profit pressures faced by manufacturers across the globe. Our paper first discusses the concept of seamlessness, and then examines some of the consequences of the lack of seamlessness in terms of freight transport inefficiencies. We then begin to examine the new developments in which intermodality, technology (e-commerce), and logistics are changing and will have the impact of heightening competitive advantage and reducing constraint points in production value chains and global production networks. Finally the intent is to show how research on this theme might be advanced in a trans-Atlantic framework.

Due to the prevailing economic crisis, Argentina has been facing a growing number of informal workers, many of them urban recyclers. Following the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated decline in formal employment, this number can be expected to rise even further. Increased recycling activity is, in principle, a positive development. However, the working conditions of urban recyclers often do not correspond to the ILO definition of “decent work”. It is therefore important to ask how the recycling system in Argentina can be shaped to be socially sustainable, as well as environmentally and economically sustainable. Based on qualitative stakeholder interviews, our research aimed to collect and synthesise the ideas and expectations of a diverse set of actors in the recycling sector of Buenos Aires City and selected municipalities of Buenos Aires Province. This enabled us to identify four key areas of dispute and potential action. First, work in urban recycling is a form of social safety net in Argentina, as in many countries with persistent poverty. This can lead to a trade-off between maintaining the social function of the sector and subjecting it to the kinds of efficiency requirements placed on other sectors. Given the inherent power asymmetries between large companies and individual urban recyclers, the latter may be crowded out once the sector becomes profitable. Second, it is important to avoid viewing urban recyclers as recipients of charity. By re-introducing materials into the resource cycle and reducing pressure on landfills, they create positive externalities and offer a valuable service to society. Paying urban recyclers for the service component of their work in addition to the value of the raw materials collected would constitute a significant step towards ensuring both decent incomes and broad social recognition of the workers’ value. Third, the knowledge and experience gathered by urban recyclers holds great potential for grassroots innovations, such as making productive use of materials that do not currently have a market. With the cooperation of other actors, such as universities, and the provision of resources and support via the removal of red tape, these innovators could more easily employ their ideas to the benefit of society. Fourth, as a cross-cutting issue, all solutions aimed at unlocking the potential of urban recycling for a transition of the waste sector towards economic, ecological and social sustainability require a careful navigation of the political economy dimension. Constellations of interests have led to incentives that are, in many cases, not conducive to economic efficiency and bind resources that could otherwise be used to improve recycling schemes. Reform of these incentives requires a careful analysis of power constellations and potential change coalitions. Discussion Paper

The meeting brought together actors and professionals involved in all parts of the regional legume agri-food chain (LAFC), to interact with members of the TRUE project. The project TRUE (TRansition paths to sUstainable legume-based systems in Europe) is involved in the development of European strategies for the sustainable production and use of plant proteins obtained from legumes. An increase in production of legumes is expected to lower the usage of non-renewable resources used in the production of mineral fertilisers. It will also improve crop diversity and increase human and animal consumption of legumes. An important objective of the project TRUE is to assess environmental, social and economic benefits of incorporating legumes into agri-food chains, as well as to investigate in what way such incorporation is meeting the key goals of sustainable development. The task of the TRUE project is also to engage with different stakeholders in the LAFC. Therefore, the workshops participants were representatives of growers, food industry, transport, trade and consumers, whose activities already incorporate legumes or who are planning to do so. On the first day of the workshop, we focused on assessing the key sustainability aspects of individual links within the LAFC as well as the chain as a whole. The knowledge gained will help the workshop participants to reach sustainable development targets in their own area of work. Researchers as well as stakeholders taking part in the TRUE project, through the workshop discussions, obtained useful information that will be used for future development of the evaluation model for the assessment of sustainability of the LAFC. Day two focused on knowledge exchange, showcasing examples of good practice during a field trip. The participants first visited the company Žito d.o.o, a food company that, while modern, maintains its roots in a rich and prosperous tradition. They are constantly following the trends and successfully introducing them into modern production technology with a revolutionary market approach, which includes legumes. The next stop was Semenarna Ljubljana – a seed and packing company. Semenarna Ljubljana is one of the region’s top providers of quality seeds. Their development is based on their own crops, products and services. They maintain over 70 different seed varieties from 26 plant species (including common beans, soybeans, peas, chickpeas and lentils), of which 37 are indigenous Slovenian varieties. The last stop was at the Etri community, a leading group in the field of social entrepreneurship, whose aims are to build an inclusive society and change social norms. They are changing their practice in the fields of ecology, ergonomics and ethical economics. The story of the Etri community is about creating green jobs for individuals, often excluded from society, in collaboration with socially responsible companies. They intend to include more legumes in their meals and at the end of the visit they prepared a delicious legumes showcase lunch for the delegates. The whole event focused on the five links of the LAFC. 43 participants (21 females and 22 males) attended the workshop, of which six were TRUE members that acted as facilitators and four were invited government guest that discussed different aspects of LAFC related topics: regulatory organizations, education and knowledge transfer, financial and business mechanisms and public participation.

AbstractWith the global economy not yet 10% circular, businesses are key stakeholders in designing new forms of resource use, especially large multinationals. However, compared with the wealth of studies on ‘born sustainable’ start‐ups, there is minimal case study or interview based research into how incumbent companies are approaching this transition. Focusing on plastics, we ask: how does one incumbent multinational company approach the circular economy transition? This paper presents a case study of the incumbent multinational chemical company Dow, a leading plastics manufacturer. Varied external stressors and drivers for the circular economy act upon a company (which also has its own imperatives), resulting in tentative steps towards circular economy. To date, these steps have tweaked the existing system rather than radically altering the business model. For companies, like for the entire global economy, this transition has only just begun. This paper identifies key drivers, enablers and barriers of the circular economy, none of which are fixed or immutable. Knowing which levers for change are available and effective could help policy makers to shift gear to enable quicker progress towards circularity. Overall, broad based support and engagement is needed to progress the circular economy, hence all stakeholders have roles to play in demanding and enacting circular practices. Applying the model to less aggregate level data helps avoiding the distortions from exogenous structural shifts and measurement errors. The results confirm the previous findings that including capital stock vintages significantly improves the econometric model's goodness of fit. Estimated own-price elasticities of energy demand vary between 0.26 and 1.00 and are economically sound. Estimated own-price investment elasticities of energy efficiency of capital stock vary between 0.03 and 0.9. The investment response to energy prices thus varies significantly across manufacturing industries, being significant in some of them and negligible in other. The results of policy simulations for the U.K. petrochemical industry (the most energy-intensive industry in the sample) indicate that total (operational and investment) own-price elasticity of energy demand is close to one.

The first part of the thesis deals with econometric challenges that arise in the estimation of gravity models. Specifically, the first chapter considers Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimation of the intensive margin of trade, i.e. of how much two countries trade with one another. It offers a solution to the computational challenge posed by several sets of high-dimensional fixed effects in a non-linear panel data setting. It then applies the proposed iterative estimation procedure to re-assess the effect of a common currency on bilateral trade flows and does not find a significant effect. The second chapter considers the extensive margin of international trade, i.e. the question whether two countries trade with each other at all. It provides a model and econometric specification that allow for persistence due to both unobserved bilateral heterogeneity and true state dependence. An incidental parameter bias correction for the proposed dynamic high-dimensional fixed effects probit estimator is developed and the desirable properties of the bias-corrected estimator are demonstrated in Monte Carlo simulations. The estimator is then applied to the estimation of the extensive margin determinants. Taking into account the two sources of persistence is shown to matter considerably for the empirical results. Specifically, the chapter presents evidence that the extensive margin is characterized by a high level of persistence. The second part of the dissertation deals with the interplay of climate policy and international trade. In the third chapter, the trade, welfare, and emission effects of carbon tariffs are analysed. Carbon tariffs equalize carbon price differentials in order to reduce carbon leakage. For the analysis, an extended structural gravity model including a sectoral structure and a multi-factor production structure with emissions is developed that allows a decomposition of emission changes into scale, composition, and technique effects. The counterfactual analysis shows that carbon tariffs can reduce global emissions by mainly altering the sectoral composition, however at the cost of reduced trade flows and welfare losses for most, especially developing, countries. The last chapter of the dissertation deals with the consequences of unilateral withdrawals from the Paris Agreement. It considers not only the direct effect of a lower global sum of reduction targets, but also the indirect effect of the withdrawing country increasing its emissions beyond the business-as-usual emission path in response to the rest of the world’s climate policies. An extension of the model developed in chapter three is presented that incorporates both carbon leakage due to comparative advantage changes in international trade and via the international fossil fuel market. The counterfactual analysis reveals that a US withdrawal would harm the effectiveness of the Paris Agreement most strongly and eliminate one third of the global emission reduction. The leakage effect would be strongest in case of a Chinese withdrawal.
