For each innovation there is a description, information about its contribution to decarbonisation, actors and collaborators involved, sources of funding, drivers, (co)benefits and disadvantages. More information on the method for selecting innovations for the database is available here. The database was created as part of REINVENT – a Horizon 2020 research project funded by the European Commission (grant agreement 730053). REINVENT involves five research institutions from four countries: Lund University (Sweden), Durham University (United Kingdom), Wuppertal Institute (Germany), PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (the Netherlands) and Utrecht University (the Netherlands). However, lowering greenhouse gas emissions by switching to alternative fuels or electricity can come at the expense of land and water resources. To understand the scale of this possible tradeoff we compare and contrast carbon, land and water footprints per driven km in midsize cars utilizing conventional gasoline, biofuels, bioelectricity, solar electricity and solar-based hydrogen. Results show that solar-powered electric cars have the smallest environmental footprints per km, followed by solar-based hydrogen cars, and that biofuel-driven cars have the largest footprints. Data is collected from peer reviewed publications, government agencies and international organizations. This file should be navigated from top-down and from left to right.

Nevertheless, if women were employed at their level of capacity, European gdp would increase by 3.3 points instead of stagnating. Do women have to adapt to this environment, or does it need to change to accommodate different people and working methods? This book gives voice — through a series of texts signed by European experts and illustrated with eloquent graphics — to the shemakes project and its network of T&C Labs that showcase their local innovations. Hence, the blueprint synthesizes pre-test activities (tests on biofouling and monitoring tools development of site-specific monitoring programs, seaweed net and seeding strategy tests, material tests of oyster cultivation, etc.), material choices (selection of scour protection material, instrument choices, installation procedures, etc.), design set-ups (method of mooring, connectors, net systems vs. longlines), technical requirement specifications (e.g. estimation of minimum breaking loads), training and capacity building of personnel (e.g. offshore sea survival course, offshore first aid course) as well as health and safety issues, on which the operational offshore phase builds upon. The report depicts the planning stages (primarily from the bio-technology point of view as the planning of the licensing procedures are highly variable in various jurisdictions and will always require a site-specific approach) as well as a detailed description of the development trajectory of offshore multi-use concepts: combination of wind energy and seaweed-/ blue mussel research and production (German Pilot), floating solar energy production and seaweed culture (Dutch Pilot), wind energy production and seaweed-/oyster culture (Belgian Pilot), wind energy production and tourism (Danish Pilot) as well as fish aquaculture and tourism (Greek Pilot). Furthermore, simulations of the seaweed net design for the German, Dutch and Belgian Pilot were performed to determine an optimum choice for each site. In order to generate a complete report, not only concerning technological matters, but also most relevant environmental issues (i.e. revised assessment needs that differ from conventional approaches), social aspects (i.e. stakeholder engagement and consensus building), economic considerations (i.e. key performance indicators, specific to each pilot). Also, the legal aspects (i.e. national regulations & insurance specifically for the project partners but not EU wide) are addressed regarding every Pilot and pivotal requirements are presented and discussed.

The R&Dialogue consortium discussed the experiences made and lessons learned during the ten country dialogues. Based on these findings an overall vision for Europe has been constructed. The vision tries to highlight the insights of this mutual learning process, but clearly it does not necessarily reflect the opinions and interests of all the external stakeholders involved. The chapter ‘Vision for Europe in 2050’ lays out the characteristics of a possible low- carbon Europe in the future. The chapter ‘Ways of getting to the low-carbon society’ gives recommendations for how to achieve this transition.

More information on the method for selecting innovations for the database is available here. The database was created as part of REINVENT – a Horizon 2020 research project funded by the European Commission (grant agreement 730053). REINVENT involves five research institutions from four countries: Lund University (Sweden), Durham University (United Kingdom), Wuppertal Institute (Germany), PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (the Netherlands) and Utrecht University (the Netherlands). However, lowering greenhouse gas emissions by switching to alternative fuels or electricity can come at the expense of land and water resources. To understand the scale of this possible tradeoff we compare and contrast carbon, land and water footprints per driven km in midsize cars utilizing conventional gasoline, biofuels, bioelectricity, solar electricity and solar-based hydrogen. Results show that solar-powered electric cars have the smallest environmental footprints per km, followed by solar-based hydrogen cars, and that biofuel-driven cars have the largest footprints. Data is collected from peer reviewed publications, government agencies and international organizations. This file should be navigated from top-down and from left to right.

Hence, the blueprint synthesizes pre-test activities (tests on biofouling and monitoring tools development of site-specific monitoring programs, seaweed net and seeding strategy tests, material tests of oyster cultivation, etc.), material choices (selection of scour protection material, instrument choices, installation procedures, etc.), design set-ups (method of mooring, connectors, net systems vs. longlines), technical requirement specifications (e.g. estimation of minimum breaking loads), training and capacity building of personnel (e.g. offshore sea survival course, offshore first aid course) as well as health and safety issues, on which the operational offshore phase builds upon. The report depicts the planning stages (primarily from the bio-technology point of view as the planning of the licensing procedures are highly variable in various jurisdictions and will always require a site-specific approach) as well as a detailed description of the development trajectory of offshore multi-use concepts: combination of wind energy and seaweed-/ blue mussel research and production (German Pilot), floating solar energy production and seaweed culture (Dutch Pilot), wind energy production and seaweed-/oyster culture (Belgian Pilot), wind energy production and tourism (Danish Pilot) as well as fish aquaculture and tourism (Greek Pilot). Furthermore, simulations of the seaweed net design for the German, Dutch and Belgian Pilot were performed to determine an optimum choice for each site. In order to generate a complete report, not only concerning technological matters, but also most relevant environmental issues (i.e. revised assessment needs that differ from conventional approaches), social aspects (i.e. stakeholder engagement and consensus building), economic considerations (i.e. key performance indicators, specific to each pilot). Also, the legal aspects (i.e. national regulations & insurance specifically for the project partners but not EU wide) are addressed regarding every Pilot and pivotal requirements are presented and discussed.

The R&Dialogue consortium discussed the experiences made and lessons learned during the ten country dialogues. Based on these findings an overall vision for Europe has been constructed. The vision tries to highlight the insights of this mutual learning process, but clearly it does not necessarily reflect the opinions and interests of all the external stakeholders involved. The chapter ‘Vision for Europe in 2050’ lays out the characteristics of a possible low- carbon Europe in the future. The chapter ‘Ways of getting to the low-carbon society’ gives recommendations for how to achieve this transition.
