The entropy production in 2-D heat transfer system has been analyzed systematically by using the finite volume method, to develop new criteria for the numerical simulation in case of multidimensional systems, with the aid of the CFD codes. The steady-state heat conduction problem has been investigated for entropy production, and the entropy production profile has been calculated based upon the current approach. From results for 2-D heat conduction, it can be found that the stability of entropy production profile exhibits a better agreement with the exact solution accordingly, and the current approach is effective for measuring the accuracy and stability of numerical simulations for heat transfer problems.

AbstractBiogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which are mainly emitted by vegetation, may create either positive or negative climate forcing feedbacks. In the Subarctic, BVOC emissions are highly responsive to temperature, but the effects of climatic warming on BVOC emissions have not been assessed in more extreme arctic ecosystems. The Arctic undergoes rapid climate change, with air temperatures increasing at twice the rate of the global mean. Also, the amount of winter precipitation is projected to increase in large areas of the Arctic, and it is unknown how winter snow depth affects BVOC emissions during summer. Here we examine the responses of BVOC emissions to experimental summer warming and winter snow addition—each treatment alone and in combination—in an arctic heath during two growing seasons. We observed a 280% increase relative to ambient in BVOC emissions in response to a 4°C summer warming. Snow addition had minor effects on growing season BVOC emissions after one winter but decreased BVOC emissions after the second winter. We also examined differences between canopy and air temperatures and found that the tundra canopy surface was on average 7.7°C and maximum 21.6°C warmer than air. This large difference suggests that the tundra surface temperature is an important driver for emissions of BVOCs, which are temperature dependent. Our results demonstrate a strong response of BVOC emissions to increasing temperatures in the Arctic, suggesting that emission rates will increase with climate warming and thereby feed back to regional climate change.

The microalgae-microbial fuel cell (mMFC) enables us to perform secondary and tertiary treatment of domestic wastewater while simultaneously producing green electricity. In this work, the treatment of wastewater and producing electricity using a dual-chambered mMFC were demonstrated. Furthermore, the electricity produced by the mMFC was utilized to drive microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) for hydrogen synthesis. Primary domestic wastewater was treated in the anodic compartment of mMFC. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 67.2 and 54% was achieved in the anodic compartment of batch and continuous mode, respectively. Wetland-treated water was filled in the cathodic compartment, and Scenedesmus sp. was used as a catholyte. The overall voltage of 1.85 V was used to run a 1-L MEC. Industrial wastewater was treated with a COD removal of 73% in the MEC and biohydrogen was produced at a rate of 9.8 ± 0.2 mL L−1 d−1.

This study focused on investigating the bottoming power cycles operating with CO2-based binary mixture, taking into account exergetic, economic and exergo-environmental impact indices. The main intent is to assess the benefits of employing a CO2-based mixture working fluid in closed Brayton bottoming power cycles in comparison with pure CO2 working fluid. Firstly, selection criteria for the choice of suitable additive compound for CO2-based binary mixture is delineated and the composition of the binary mixture is decided based on required cycle minimum temperature. The decided CO2-C7H8 binary mixture with a 0.9 mole fraction of CO2 is analyzed in two cycle configurations: Simple regenerative cycle (SRC) and Partial heating cycle (PHC). Comparative analysis among two configurations with selected working fluid are carried out. Thermodynamic analyses at varying cycle pressure ratio shows that cycle with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows maximum power output and exergy efficiency at rather higher cycle pressure ratio compared to pure CO2 power cycles. PHC with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows 28.68% increment in exergy efficiency with the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) 21.62% higher than pure CO2 PHC. Whereas, SRC with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows 25.17% increment in exergy efficiency with LCOE 57.14% higher than pure CO2 SRC. This study focused on investigating the bottoming power cycles operating with CO2-based binary mixture, taking into account exergetic, economic and exergo-environmental impact indices. The main intent is to assess the benefits of employing a CO2-based mixture working fluid in closed Brayton bottoming power cycles in comparison with pure CO2 working fluid. Firstly, selection criteria for the choice of suitable additive compound for CO2-based binary mixture is delineated and the composition of the binary mixture is decided based on required cycle minimum temperature. The decided CO2-C7H8 binary mixture with a 0.9 mole fraction of CO2 is analyzed in two cycle configurations: Simple regenerative cycle (SRC) and Partial heating cycle (PHC). Comparative analysis among two configurations with selected working fluid are carried out. Thermodynamic analyses at varying cycle pressure ratio shows that cycle with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows maximum power output and exergy efficiency at rather higher cycle pressure ratio compared to pure CO2 power cycles. PHC with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows 28.68% increment in exergy efficiency with the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) 21.62% higher than pure CO2 PHC. Whereas, SRC with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows 25.17% increment in exergy efficiency with LCOE 57.14% higher than pure CO2 SRC. Besides showing lower economic value, cycles with a CO2-C7H8 mixture saves larger CO2 emissions and also shows greater exergo-environmental impact improvement and plant sustainability index.

This paper determines the cost/revenue performance of a mobile communication system in an IMT-Advanced scenario with integrated Common Radio Resource Management (iCRRM). The iCRRM performs classic CRRM functionalities jointly with Spectrum Aggregation (SA), being able to switch users between non-contiguous frequency bands. The SA scheduling is obtained with an optimized General Multi-Band Scheduling (GMBS) algorithm with the aim of cell throughput maximization. In particular, we investigate the dependence of the throughput on the cell coverage distance for the allocation of users over the 2 and 5 GHz bands for a single operator scenario under a constant average Signal to Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR), for the same type of Radio Access Technology and both frequency bands. The operator has the availability of a non-shared 2 GHz band and has access to part (or all) of a shared frequency band at 5 GHz. An almost constant gain near 30 % was obtained with the proposed optimal solution compared to a system where users are first allocated in one of the two bands and later not able to handover between the bands. It is shown that the profit in percentage terms decreases as the cell radius increases. These results allow for evaluating the impact of the revenue from the channel in the total revenue and in the profit, defined as the difference between revenues and costs, in percentage. Maximum profits of about 1270, 585 and 240 % have been obtained for prices of 0.10, 0.05 and 0.025 €/MByte, respectively, when iCRRM is employed, while profits of 990, 440, and 170 % have been reached with no iCRRM, i.e., simple CRRM. Finally, an energy efficiency strategy is proposed and analyzed, showing that there is significant transmission power saving potential through the opportunistic reallocation scheme.

The fluid is electrically conducting and passing through a porous medium. This phenomenon is modelled in the form of partial differential equations with initial and boundary conditions. Some suitable non-dimensional variables are introduced. The corresponding non-dimensional equations with conditions are solved using the Laplace transform technique. Exact solutions for velocity and energy are obtained. They are expressed in simple forms in terms of exponential and complementary error functions of Gauss. It is found that they satisfy governing equations and corresponding conditions, and are reduced to similar solutions for Newtonian fluids as a special case. Expressions for skin-friction and Nusselt number are also evaluated. Computations are carried out and the results are analysed for emerging flow parameters.

The record over the last 200 years reveals a spectacular 150% increase of the CH 4 atmospheric mixing ratio since pre-industrial times. At the scale of a glacial-interglacial cycle the record shows a remarkable correlation with climatic changes, with high (low) CH 4 levels during warm (cold) periods. A striking feature of the glacial-interglacial CH 4 record is the presence of large and abrupt (at the scale of a century or less) changes during the last glaciation and glacial-interglacial transition. The classical interpretation for the origin of CH 4 changes prior to the industrial era involves mainly the wetland source. In the context of gas hydrates the question is to know whether the past ice-core record contains fingerprints of catastrophic hydrate release (CHR). We currently conclude that the available record shows no evidence for CHR but additional ice-core analyses are necessary to reach a more definitive conclusion.

The record over the last 200 years reveals a spectacular 150% increase of the CH 4 atmospheric mixing ratio since pre-industrial times. At the scale of a glacial-interglacial cycle the record shows a remarkable correlation with climatic changes, with high (low) CH 4 levels during warm (cold) periods. A striking feature of the glacial-interglacial CH 4 record is the presence of large and abrupt (at the scale of a century or less) changes during the last glaciation and glacial-interglacial transition. The classical interpretation for the origin of CH 4 changes prior to the industrial era involves mainly the wetland source. In the context of gas hydrates the question is to know whether the past ice-core record contains fingerprints of catastrophic hydrate release (CHR). We currently conclude that the available record shows no evidence for CHR but additional ice-core analyses are necessary to reach a more definitive conclusion.

Many countries suffer huge losses in billions of dollars due to non-technical loss (NTL) in power supply companies. To deal with NTL, many machine learning classifiers have been employed in recent time. However, few has been studied about the performance evaluation metrics that are used in NTL detection to evaluate how good or bad the classifier is in predicting the non-technical loss. This paper first uses three classifiers: random forest,K-nearest neighbors and linear support vector machine to predict the occurrence of NTL in a real dataset of an electric supply company containing approximately 80,000 monthly consumption records. Then, it computes 14 performance evaluation metrics across the three classifiers and identify the key scientific relationships between them. These relationships provide insights into deciding which classifier can be more useful under given scenarios for NTL detection. This work can be proved to be a baseline not only for the NTL detection in power industry but also for the selection of appropriate performance evaluation metrics for NTL detection.

UNAFLOW(UNsteady Aerodynamics for FloatingWind) is a joint EU-IRPWIND founded experiment on wind turbine rotor unsteady aerodynamics. It brings together four different academic contributors: Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), DTU Wind Energy, University of Stuttgart (USTUTT) and Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi) sharing knowledge both in numerical modelling and in experimental tests design, allowing direct numerical and experimental comparison. The experimental tests carried out for UNAFLOW are of the same type of the ones carried out during the ongoing EU H2020 project LIFES50+ [1], regarding both the unsteady behaviour of the 2d blade section and the entire turbine rotor, although with improved setup and wider test matrix. The project partners are already currently jointly collaborating in the AVATAR project [2], developing and validating numerical models of different accuracy level. The numerical models used in the UNALFOW project range from engineering tool (eg. BEM) to high fidelity CFD methods. Numerical simulations are used both in the design of experiment phase and in the results analysis allowing for an in depth understanding of the experimental findings through advanced modelling approach. The UNAFLOW project, together with a new understanding of the unsteady behaviour of the turbine rotor aerodynamics, will provide also an open database to be shared among the scientific community for future analysis and new models validation.

The entropy production in 2-D heat transfer system has been analyzed systematically by using the finite volume method, to develop new criteria for the numerical simulation in case of multidimensional systems, with the aid of the CFD codes. The steady-state heat conduction problem has been investigated for entropy production, and the entropy production profile has been calculated based upon the current approach. From results for 2-D heat conduction, it can be found that the stability of entropy production profile exhibits a better agreement with the exact solution accordingly, and the current approach is effective for measuring the accuracy and stability of numerical simulations for heat transfer problems.

AbstractBiogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), which are mainly emitted by vegetation, may create either positive or negative climate forcing feedbacks. In the Subarctic, BVOC emissions are highly responsive to temperature, but the effects of climatic warming on BVOC emissions have not been assessed in more extreme arctic ecosystems. The Arctic undergoes rapid climate change, with air temperatures increasing at twice the rate of the global mean. Also, the amount of winter precipitation is projected to increase in large areas of the Arctic, and it is unknown how winter snow depth affects BVOC emissions during summer. Here we examine the responses of BVOC emissions to experimental summer warming and winter snow addition—each treatment alone and in combination—in an arctic heath during two growing seasons. We observed a 280% increase relative to ambient in BVOC emissions in response to a 4°C summer warming. Snow addition had minor effects on growing season BVOC emissions after one winter but decreased BVOC emissions after the second winter. We also examined differences between canopy and air temperatures and found that the tundra canopy surface was on average 7.7°C and maximum 21.6°C warmer than air. This large difference suggests that the tundra surface temperature is an important driver for emissions of BVOCs, which are temperature dependent. Our results demonstrate a strong response of BVOC emissions to increasing temperatures in the Arctic, suggesting that emission rates will increase with climate warming and thereby feed back to regional climate change.

The microalgae-microbial fuel cell (mMFC) enables us to perform secondary and tertiary treatment of domestic wastewater while simultaneously producing green electricity. In this work, the treatment of wastewater and producing electricity using a dual-chambered mMFC were demonstrated. Furthermore, the electricity produced by the mMFC was utilized to drive microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) for hydrogen synthesis. Primary domestic wastewater was treated in the anodic compartment of mMFC. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 67.2 and 54% was achieved in the anodic compartment of batch and continuous mode, respectively. Wetland-treated water was filled in the cathodic compartment, and Scenedesmus sp. was used as a catholyte. The overall voltage of 1.85 V was used to run a 1-L MEC. Industrial wastewater was treated with a COD removal of 73% in the MEC and biohydrogen was produced at a rate of 9.8 ± 0.2 mL L−1 d−1.

This study focused on investigating the bottoming power cycles operating with CO2-based binary mixture, taking into account exergetic, economic and exergo-environmental impact indices. The main intent is to assess the benefits of employing a CO2-based mixture working fluid in closed Brayton bottoming power cycles in comparison with pure CO2 working fluid. Firstly, selection criteria for the choice of suitable additive compound for CO2-based binary mixture is delineated and the composition of the binary mixture is decided based on required cycle minimum temperature. The decided CO2-C7H8 binary mixture with a 0.9 mole fraction of CO2 is analyzed in two cycle configurations: Simple regenerative cycle (SRC) and Partial heating cycle (PHC). Comparative analysis among two configurations with selected working fluid are carried out. Thermodynamic analyses at varying cycle pressure ratio shows that cycle with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows maximum power output and exergy efficiency at rather higher cycle pressure ratio compared to pure CO2 power cycles. PHC with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows 28.68% increment in exergy efficiency with the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) 21.62% higher than pure CO2 PHC. Whereas, SRC with CO2-C7H8 mixture shows 25.17% increment in exergy efficiency with LCOE 57.14% higher than pure CO2 SRC. Besides showing lower economic value, cycles with a CO2-C7H8 mixture saves larger CO2 emissions and also shows greater exergo-environmental impact improvement and plant sustainability index.

This paper determines the cost/revenue performance of a mobile communication system in an IMT-Advanced scenario with integrated Common Radio Resource Management (iCRRM). The iCRRM performs classic CRRM functionalities jointly with Spectrum Aggregation (SA), being able to switch users between non-contiguous frequency bands. The SA scheduling is obtained with an optimized General Multi-Band Scheduling (GMBS) algorithm with the aim of cell throughput maximization. In particular, we investigate the dependence of the throughput on the cell coverage distance for the allocation of users over the 2 and 5 GHz bands for a single operator scenario under a constant average Signal to Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR), for the same type of Radio Access Technology and both frequency bands. The operator has the availability of a non-shared 2 GHz band and has access to part (or all) of a shared frequency band at 5 GHz. An almost constant gain near 30 % was obtained with the proposed optimal solution compared to a system where users are first allocated in one of the two bands and later not able to handover between the bands. It is shown that the profit in percentage terms decreases as the cell radius increases. These results allow for evaluating the impact of the revenue from the channel in the total revenue and in the profit, defined as the difference between revenues and costs, in percentage. Maximum profits of about 1270, 585 and 240 % have been obtained for prices of 0.10, 0.05 and 0.025 €/MByte, respectively, when iCRRM is employed, while profits of 990, 440, and 170 % have been reached with no iCRRM, i.e., simple CRRM. Finally, an energy efficiency strategy is proposed and analyzed, showing that there is significant transmission power saving potential through the opportunistic reallocation scheme.

The fluid is electrically conducting and passing through a porous medium. This phenomenon is modelled in the form of partial differential equations with initial and boundary conditions. Some suitable non-dimensional variables are introduced. The corresponding non-dimensional equations with conditions are solved using the Laplace transform technique. Exact solutions for velocity and energy are obtained. They are expressed in simple forms in terms of exponential and complementary error functions of Gauss. It is found that they satisfy governing equations and corresponding conditions, and are reduced to similar solutions for Newtonian fluids as a special case. Expressions for skin-friction and Nusselt number are also evaluated. Computations are carried out and the results are analysed for emerging flow parameters.

The record over the last 200 years reveals a spectacular 150% increase of the CH 4 atmospheric mixing ratio since pre-industrial times. At the scale of a glacial-interglacial cycle the record shows a remarkable correlation with climatic changes, with high (low) CH 4 levels during warm (cold) periods. A striking feature of the glacial-interglacial CH 4 record is the presence of large and abrupt (at the scale of a century or less) changes during the last glaciation and glacial-interglacial transition. The classical interpretation for the origin of CH 4 changes prior to the industrial era involves mainly the wetland source. In the context of gas hydrates the question is to know whether the past ice-core record contains fingerprints of catastrophic hydrate release (CHR). We currently conclude that the available record shows no evidence for CHR but additional ice-core analyses are necessary to reach a more definitive conclusion.

Many countries suffer huge losses in billions of dollars due to non-technical loss (NTL) in power supply companies. To deal with NTL, many machine learning classifiers have been employed in recent time. However, few has been studied about the performance evaluation metrics that are used in NTL detection to evaluate how good or bad the classifier is in predicting the non-technical loss. This paper first uses three classifiers: random forest,K-nearest neighbors and linear support vector machine to predict the occurrence of NTL in a real dataset of an electric supply company containing approximately 80,000 monthly consumption records. Then, it computes 14 performance evaluation metrics across the three classifiers and identify the key scientific relationships between them. These relationships provide insights into deciding which classifier can be more useful under given scenarios for NTL detection. This work can be proved to be a baseline not only for the NTL detection in power industry but also for the selection of appropriate performance evaluation metrics for NTL detection.

UNAFLOW(UNsteady Aerodynamics for FloatingWind) is a joint EU-IRPWIND founded experiment on wind turbine rotor unsteady aerodynamics. It brings together four different academic contributors: Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), DTU Wind Energy, University of Stuttgart (USTUTT) and Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi) sharing knowledge both in numerical modelling and in experimental tests design, allowing direct numerical and experimental comparison. The experimental tests carried out for UNAFLOW are of the same type of the ones carried out during the ongoing EU H2020 project LIFES50+ [1], regarding both the unsteady behaviour of the 2d blade section and the entire turbine rotor, although with improved setup and wider test matrix. The project partners are already currently jointly collaborating in the AVATAR project [2], developing and validating numerical models of different accuracy level. The numerical models used in the UNALFOW project range from engineering tool (eg. BEM) to high fidelity CFD methods. Numerical simulations are used both in the design of experiment phase and in the results analysis allowing for an in depth understanding of the experimental findings through advanced modelling approach. The UNAFLOW project, together with a new understanding of the unsteady behaviour of the turbine rotor aerodynamics, will provide also an open database to be shared among the scientific community for future analysis and new models validation.
