Roberto Losito in OpenAIREThe study of neutron-induced reactions is of high relevance in a wide variety of fields, ranging from stellar nucleosynthesis and fundamental nuclear physics to applications of nuclear technology. In nuclear energy, high accuracy neutron data are needed for the development of Generation IV fast reactors and accelerator driven systems, these last aimed specifically at nuclear waste incineration, as well as for research on innovative fuel cycles. In this context, a high luminosity Neutron Time Of Flight facility, n_TOF, is operating at CERN since more than a decade, with the aim of providing new, high accuracy and high resolution neutron cross-sections. Thanks to the features of the neutron beam, a rich experimental program relevant to nuclear technology has been carried out so far. The program will be further expanded in the near future, thanks in particular to new highflux experimental area, now under construction.

The $^{238}$U to $^{235}$U fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to $\sim$1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets have been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of the neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. A good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solving a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental dataset available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to $\sim$1 GeV.

The low-voltage ride through (LVRT) requirement demands the wind power plants to remain connected to the grid in the presence of grid voltage dips, actively helping the network overall control to keep network voltage and frequency stable. Wind power technology points to increase power ratings. Hence, multilevel converters, as for example, neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converters, are well suited for this application. Predictive current control presents similar dynamic response and reference tracking than other well-established control methods, but working at lower switching frequencies. In this paper, the predictive current control is applied to the grid-side NPC converter as part of a wind energy conversion system, in order to fulfill the LVRT requirements. DC-link neutral-point balance is also achieved by means of the predictive control algorithm, which considers the redundant switching states of the NPC converter. Simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed control approach.

Brett T. Wolfe in OpenAIREClimate change is expected to lead to increases in drought frequency and severity, with deleterious effects on many ecosystems. Stomatal responses to changing environmental conditions form the backbone of all ecosystem models, but are based on empirical relationships and are not well-tested during drought conditions. Here, we use a dataset of 34 woody plant species spanning global forest biomes to examine the effect of leaf water potential on stomatal conductance and test the predictive accuracy of three major stomatal models and a recently proposed model. We find that current leaf-level empirical models have consistent biases of over-prediction of stomatal conductance during dry conditions, particularly at low soil water potentials. Furthermore, the recently proposed stomatal conductance model yields increases in predictive capability compared to current models, and with particular improvement during drought conditions. Our results reveal that including stomatal sensitivity to declining water potential and consequent impairment of plant water transport will improve predictions during drought conditions and show that many biomes contain a diversity of plant stomatal strategies that range from risky to conservative stomatal regulation during water stress. Such improvements in stomatal simulation are greatly needed to help unravel and predict the response of ecosystems to future climate extremes.

AbstractThis work demonstrates the high potential of Al2O3 passivated black silicon in high‐efficiency interdigitated back contacted (IBC) solar cells by reducing surface reflectance without jeopardizing surface passivation. Very low reflectance values, below 0.7% in the 300–1000 nm wavelength range, together with striking surface recombination velocities values of 17 and 5 cm/s on p‐type and n‐type crystalline silicon substrates, respectively, are reached. The simultaneous fulfillment of requirements, low reflectance and low surface recombination, paves the way for the fabrication of high‐efficiency IBC Si solar cells using black silicon at their front surface. Outstanding photovoltaic efficiencies over 22% have been achieved both in p‐type and n‐type 9‐cm2 cells. 3D simulations suggest that efficiencies of up to 24% can be obtained in the future with minor modifications in the baseline fabrication process. AbstractAimThe aim was to decipher Europe‐wide spatio‐temporal patterns of forest growth dynamics and their associations with carbon isotope fractionation processes inferred from tree rings as modulated by climate warming.LocationEurope and North Africa (30‒70° N, 10° W‒35° E).Time period1901‒2003.Major taxa studiedTemperate and Euro‐Siberian trees.MethodsWe characterize changes in the relationship between tree growth and carbon isotope fractionation over the 20th century using a European network consisting of 20 site chronologies. Using indexed tree‐ring widths (TRWi), we assess shifts in the temporal coherence of radial growth across sites (synchrony) for five forest ecosystems (Atlantic, boreal, cold continental, Mediterranean and temperate). We also examine whether TRWi shows variable coupling with leaf‐level gas exchange, inferred from indexed carbon isotope discrimination of tree‐ring cellulose (Δ13Ci).ResultsWe find spatial autocorrelation for TRWi and Δ13Ci extending over a maximum of 1,000 km among forest stands. However, growth synchrony is not uniform across Europe, but increases along a latitudinal gradient concurrent with decreasing temperature and evapotranspiration. Latitudinal relationships between TRWi and Δ13Ci (changing from negative to positive southwards) point to drought impairing carbon uptake via stomatal regulation for water saving occurring at forests below 60° N in continental Europe. An increase in forest growth synchrony over the 20th century together with increasingly positive relationships between TRWi and Δ13Ci indicate intensifying impacts of drought on tree performance. These effects are noticeable in drought‐prone biomes (Mediterranean, temperate and cold continental).Main conclusionsAt the turn of this century, convergence in growth synchrony across European forest ecosystems is coupled with coordinated warming‐induced effects of drought on leaf physiology and tree growth spreading northwards. Such a tendency towards exacerbated moisture‐sensitive growth and physiology could override positive effects of enhanced leaf intercellular CO2 concentrations, possibly resulting in Europe‐wide declines of forest carbon gain in the coming decades.

In this work, an intensive assessment of solar disinfection of secondary wastewater was elaborated in controlled laboratory conditions. Batch tests of Escherichia coli-spiked synthetic secondary effluent, at nine different constant intensity levels, were followed by a 48-h dark storage. Solar disinfection was monitored in half-hourly intervals demonstrating distinct phases of lag followed by sharp inactivation. The results were fit to a shoulder log-linear and a Weibull distribution model. The solar-driven inactivation, the latency period and the effective disinfection time (for 4-log reduction) were correlated properly with the applied irradiance, resulting in a common, standardized dose for all intensities. Evolution of bacterial response in the dark was monitored for 48 h, and was in each case characterized as growth or decay. Also, the energy threshold, which was able to shift post-irradiation behavior from growth to decay, was analytically studied. In all intensity levels, this standard was approximately constant, as an effective bacteriostatic dose (EBD). Finally, similar dose-related disinfection and regrowth effects were observed, suggesting compliance with the reciprocity law, with minor deviations

Jérôme Barrau in OpenAIREThermal management in integrated chips is one of the major challenges on micro- and nanoelectronics. The rise of power density raised the need for microchannel liquid cooling solutions. This technology has poor temperature uniformity and requires high pumping powers. In this work, a cooling scheme aiming for high temperature uniformity and low pumping power is numerically studied. The cooling scheme consists in a matrix of microfluidic cells with thermally activated microvalves, which tailor the local coolant flow rates to avoid overcooling and improve the temperature uniformity. This system is assessed with steady state CFD studies combined with temporal integration in a time dependent and non-uniform heat load scenario. The studied cooling scheme improves, with respect to existing devices for similar applications, the chip temperature uniformity while reducing the pumping power by 50%. The research leading to these results has been performed within the STREAMS project and received funding from the European Community's Horizon 2020 program under Grant Agreement No. 688564.

Rodrigo Santos in OpenAIREThe adoption of mobile and ubiquitous solutions that involve participatory or opportunistic sensing increases every day. This situation has highlighted the relevance of optimizing the energy consumption of these solutions, because their operation depends on the devices’ battery lifetimes. This article presents a study that intends to understand how the prediction of topology control messages in human-centric wireless sensor networks can be used to help reduce the energy consumption of the participating devices. In order to do that, five research questions have been defined and a study based on simulations was conducted to answer these questions. The obtained results help identify suitable mobile computing scenarios where the prediction of topology control messages can be used to save energy of the network nodes. These results also allow estimating the percentage of energy saving that can be expected, according to the features of the work scenario and the participants behavior. Designers of mobile collaborative applications that involve participatory or opportunistic sensing, can take advantage of these findings to increase the autonomy of their solutions.
