This report details the internship process performed and the professional skills acquired in relation to the physical exercise prescription in two community Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs: The Coronary Club of Lisbon and the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Center of the University of Lisbon. Cardiovascular diseases continue to grow, partly due to the increase in risk factors, including overweight and obesity. Thus, a contribution to prescribe individualized exercise and physical activity is developed for one of the programs, with the goal of increasing the energy expenditure of the participants, always considering the associated cardiovascular pathology and the pharmacology taken. In addition, multiple skills were developed during the internship year: exercise prescription in different profiles of people with cardiovascular disease, monitoring of hemodynamic variables of the participants, assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness, functional fitness, body composition and physical activity, and the organization of different activities and events. This document ends with a reflection and conclusion about the present and future expectations of the trainee at the professional level in this area.

The corporations activity make positive and negative impacts on the world at economic, social and environment levels. In this way, becomes fundamental to promote the adoption e valorisation of Company’s Social Responsibility practices. This investigation has the purpose to inform the readers for the social responsibility subject, give examples of social responsibility good practices and investigate if the adoptions of these examples have a positive effect financial and economic’s performance, assuming the fact of the an ethical and socially responsible conduct will be a leverage for a sustainable development. In time, the study will focus on identify the dimensions, the contribute of the socially responsible acts of two Portuguese companies of the PSI 20, in the period between 2011 and 2015, with the backup of an analyses of the rentability performance indicators. Given the fact that the socially responsibility be fundamental for all the corporations, it is intended, having in mind the environmental and social aspects, identify the factors that contribute to a competitivity and progress of the social and environmental and economic and financial progress. The results of this investigation slow a positive trend for the adoption and divulgation of RSE practice, besides the fact of studies results of correlation between the RSE and the financial and economics performance has not been obvious and significative. Although the corporations adopt the social responsible standards, the course seems to indicate that de RSE is a conscient step of the society increasingly informed, followed by others who will demand greater responsibilities.

The construction sector is responsible for much of the extraction of materials, while contributing very significantly to the environmental impacts affecting the planet. Therefore the concept sustainable construction is gaining importance and the energy efficiency in buildings become one of the fundamental aspects either in new construction or in buildings’ rehabilitation. It is in this context there is a the need for a methodology that allows assessing both the energy needs of a building and the related environmental impacts, since the most preliminary stages of design. Based in a methodology called “Methodology for the integrated analysis of environmental impacts and the energy performance of energy rehabilitation scenarios of buildings", previously developed in a research work, this thesis is aimed at: i) verifying the reliability of the methodology previously developed through its application to a case study located in different climate locations; ii) to study the relation between the global warming potential and the operational energy consumption for various rehabilitation scenarios. This analysis is aimed at assessing, for different insulation materials and acclimatization and hot water preparation equipment, the rehabilitation scenario that optimizes the relation between global warming potential emission and operational energy consumption. In order to assess the influence of the climate context in the results, it is considered that the case study building is located in four different Portuguese cities, covering all areas of possible climate combinations. This study follows the studies developed before in the research center and until now there are no studied published in the same field. There are only similar studies that relate the cost of different rehabilitation scenario with life-cycle energy consumption.

Aquaculture is an economic activity consisting on the creation of marine species in captivity for consumption. This market has increasingly grown up worldwide, having an important role in the sustained supply of quality fish for human consumption. In a fishery context, Portugal presents very interesting characteristics regarding its geographical location, its excellent gastronomic tradition in fish dishes, its climate and the great potential it can present in terms of new business opportunities, namely the aquaculture. Although there are no companies in Europe that breed captive cuttlefish, very favorable results have been obtained in the area of research in relation to the production of this species for commercial purposes. For instance, researchers at the Center for Marine Sciences of the University of Algarve (CCMAR) have proved that it is possible to have cuttlefish stocks throughout the year, allowing the retail price to be controlled without harming the producers. It is in this context that the opportunity to create an aquaculture company aimed at the fattening of cuttlefish ("Sepia officinalis") has arisen. This company was named Aquitrends. This case allows a discussion on: (i) what is aquaculture and (ii) how can this sector be considered sustainable in social, economic and environmental terms? It also allows us to know: (iii) what impact have the effluents from the activities of this sector on the environment and (iv) how can this problem be mitigated? This case also shows (v) the different possible production methods and (vi) the systems to be adopted depending on the choice of location (i.e. onshore/inland or offshore) of the aquaculture establishment. A financial feasibility analysis of the business is done.

The abundance, renewable classification, low price and high risk of fire makes forest biomass as one of the most promising options for a sustainable energy future. Among the technologies that allows high energy efficient and low environmental impact using forest biomass appears gasification. Biomass gasification allows the conversion of organic matter into syngas by partial oxidation. The composition is mainly hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO), and in lower percentage carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), methane (CH4), hydrocarbons (C2+) and nitrogen (N2). Syngas production is dependent on the temperature, pressure, oxygen content in the reactor and fuel type and moisture. This paper presents an overview of the gasification systems, describes their historical development, types of gasifiers, the conversion process and the gas cleaning systems. Physical and chemical characterization of forest biomass (pine and eucalyptus) is described and the thermal analysis is carried out to estimate the kinetic parameters. The thermal decomposition of eucalyptus described by a 1st order reaction provides an activation energy of 198 kJ/mol and a pre-exponential constant of 2.87x1014 s-1. The high heat value (HHV) of eucalyptus and pine were measured as a function of the moisture. Under dry basis a HHV of 19.43 kJ/kg for eucalyptus and a HHV of 20.25 kJ/kg for pine is obtained.

Universidade de Lisboa The concern with the environmental impacts regarding the use of fossil fuels in the energy sector has triggered the search for new renewable energy sources. The aim of this study was to monitor the physiological response of the yeast Saccharomyces carlsbergensis cells in fermentation assays performed with the addition of formic acid by multi-parameter flow cytometry. The biomass production was more affected by formic acid concentrations higher than 5 g.L-1. Nevertheless, the lowest biomass yield (0,034g.g-1) as well as the lower ethanol yield (35% reduction regarding the assay without inhibitor) were attained with 20g.L-1 of formic acid. The multi-parameter flow cytometry analysis showed that in the presence of 5 g.L-1 of inhibitor during the exponential growth phase there are some stress indicators such as the increase in the number of cells with depolarized membrane and the increase in the number of cells with reactive oxygen species, although the yeast continues to respond in terms of biomass and ethanol productions. The results on ethanol production indicate that the use of this yeast in lignocellulosic hydrolisates fermentation may be interesting due to its resistance to the effect of formic acid when compared to other yeasts like Saccharomyces cerevisae whose inhibition effects of formic acid are registered for concentrations over 4,6 g.L-1 (Larson et al., 2009).

Such style has been considered responsible for the increase of the environmental impacts associated with maintenance activities. The current challenge is to make golf more sustainable by applying a proper environmental management, which plays a vital role and is essential to its success, contributing to the achievement of environmental and economic goals. In this thesis one aims to demonstrate the importance of environmental management in maintaining a golf course. ISO 14001 concepts and GEO requirements will be applied in the management of the Oeiras golf course. The use of GEO OnCourseTM standards, specific for golf courses, will allow the certification of the implemented procedures. Collectively, the use of these strategies will allow the reduction of environmental impacts, in addition to enhancing the preservation of natural areas, protection of soil and water resources, environmental awareness of golfers and the general public, and the minimization of maintenance costs.

Lychee (Litchi chinensis), longan (Dimocarpus longan) e rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) are exotic fruits from Asia, being recently introduced in Europe. Although the world production of these fruits tends to increase, many by-products are wasted during industrial processing, including their non-edible peels. In addition to the recognized nutritional support, it is thought that phenolic compounds present in these byproducts are responsible for several activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-glycemic, antimicrobial activities, among others. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the nutritional composition and total content of bioactive compounds, namely, phenolics and total flavonoids, in order to value the non-edible fruit peels for possible applications in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In the nutritional characterization of the fruit peels, moisture, ash, protein, fat and carbohydrate contents were analyzed by AOAC methods. Protein contents varied between 2.0 and 9.1 g/ 100 g, with longan peels being the sample with the highest content. The total fat content never exceeded 1.8 g/ 100 g in the three studied samples and the mineral content of the longan peels was the highest (9.1 g/ 100 g). The carbohydrates obtained in the three samples, which include dietary fiber, varied between 76.8 and 83.3 g/ 100 g, having no effect in the total energy value of all studied peels. Regarding bioactive compounds, it was found that lychee peels present higher levels of total phenolics and flavonoids (1578.08 mg GAE/ g and 55.10 mg CE/ g, respectively), with significant differences (p 0.05) among all samples. The content of total phenolics was always higher than the content of total flavonoids in all samples, agreeing with other identical and published studies. This study showed the high potential of non-edible peel fruits whose consumption has increased as active ingredients for different products, such as foods, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics. Nevertheless, more detailed studies are needed to make the use of this plant more sustainable.

ABSTRACT: Scouting is a non-profit association, and if there is a shortage of monetary funds for the purchase of equipment, it is necessary to raise funds for this, or to ask for support and sponsorships in order to request donations. Taking this situation into account, it is essential to prioritize needs when making an investment. One of the needs felt by the groupings is the acquisition of plastic storage boxes for the transport of small equipment; however, this is one of the objectives that is often the last piority. Thus, the existing boxes do not meet the needs that rise in the field, during the scouting activities, as they were not designed for this purpose. In this sense, the following questions arose as support for the problem: How can Product Design contribute to the improvement of equipment transportation for Scouts? How to create a playful and pedagogical object, applying the Learning by Doing method, which is part of the Scout Movement? This research project started in a non-interventionist way, through a theoretical review to obtain a better understanding of the subject in question. Then, a “Do-it-yourself” object was developed, for the use and creation by the scouts from 10 to 18 years old. Subsequently, the object was evaluated through usability testing and evaluative questionnaires by the Managers belonging to the Scout Group 977-Ourém. These research questions of the project have as general objective to understand how the Product Design can be related to the Scouts, in order to obtain a functional and playful solution to ensure an easy process of assembly and disassembly, an effective use, and also presenting the versatility benefit, through different types of transport. This research project resulted in a DIY object, “Do-it-yourself”, and in its Construction Guide, responding in this way, to the proposed objectives and requirements, with a playful and pedagogical aspect making young scouts aware of the theme of sustainability. It is hoped that this project will contribute to an increase in future studies on this topic, enriching the Product Design associated with Scouting, fostering the interest of young scouts for practical and functional solutions that respect the principles of sustainability. Nowadays the country's economic situation is sensitive, so reducing energy consumption is an added value for consumers and the environment. Technological developments in recent years makes viable solutions to solve this problem. Constant monitoring of electricity consumption can guarantee this reduction is concretized. Regarding the case of buildings, energy consumption in European buildings is very significant, in terms of constructive solutions, systems and equipment. Therefore, measurable actions may be taken to reduce the consumption impact. This paper aims the energy efficiency potencial study of three nursing homes located in Porto. The audit performed has revealed a huge potential for energy savings, about electricity and natural gas. The measures to be taken to reduce the energy consumption of the building including the replacement of existing lighting by more efficient and less power, installing solar panels to reduce consumption of hot water (in the two nursing homes that don’t have this system), the replacement of natural gas boilers by biomass and installation equipment for monitoring consumption, among others. Through collecting and processing data with an energy analyzer it was possible to verify which energy consumption monitoring solution implementation in nursing homes may allow lower costs of energy bills.
